EAST LANSING, 9 July— A US study suggests peo-ple are more likely to become involved in conserva-tion programmes if their neighbours are also involved.

Michigan State University Professor Jianguo Liusaid his study is the first to look at social norms in thecontext of China’s conservation efforts. The study fo-cused on a mammoth government initiative calledGrain-to-Green that pays Chinese farmers to convertcropland back to forest. Liu said while money is a keyfactor in whether people sign up for the voluntary pro-grammes, peer pressure plays a surprisingly large role.“That’s the power of social norms,” he said. “It’s likerecycling. If you see your neighbours doing it, you’remore likely to do it.” Doctoral student Xiaodong Chen, lead author of the study, said government officialsshould leverage social norms, along with economicand demographic trends, when deciding how to sup-port conversation programmes.—Internet

On arrival at Uto Vil-lage, we had an interviewwith Pathein TownshipManager U Sein MaungMyint of Myanma Agri-culture Service who wassharing agricultureknowledge on growingquality Pawhsanhmwepaddy strain to the localfarmers.

U Sein Maung Myintexplained, “In accordwith the guidance of theHead of State and underthe supervision of the

Chairman of AyeyawadyDivision Peace and De-velopment Council, westarted the tasks to culti-vate the well-known qual-ity Pawhsanhmwe paddystrain and distribute thequality paddy seeds to thelocal farmers. We will re-produce Pawhsanhmwepaddy of Uto with finequality.”

The cultivable landof growing Uto-Pawhsanhmwe paddy islocated on 122.65 acresof natural silted area be-tween Phetye River andUto Creek, southwest ofPathein. As it is alluvialsoil, cultivation of paddycan be undertaken with-out use of any fertilizer.

“The local farmers

are keenly carrying outcultivation of qualityPawhsanhmwe paddystrain. I am supervisingthe cultivation task daily. The paddy strain produced

from the fertile region willbe distributed to the localfarmers of Pathein Town-ship. As a result, a large

volume of qualityPawhsanhmwe paddy willyield in the township inthe future. At present, Iam giving the techniquesto protect against pests,”said U Sein Maung Myint.

In the recent years, thequality of Uto-Pawhsanhmwe paddystrain declined. Indeed, thenew paddy strain must beused after one paddy strainhad been grown every twosuccessive years.

However, the localfarmers failed to practisethe agriculture techniquefor substitution of newquality paddy strains inthe place of old one.

With regard to use ofquality Pawhsanhmwepaddy strain, seed in-

charge Daw Maw Si Aungof Myanma AgricultureService from Pathein said,“The seed farms in PatheinTownship are nurturing

seedling. I always inspectpreparing of paddy seedswith salty water and wash-ing of paddy seeds withwater for enabling the lo-cal people to systemati-cally sow the paddy seedsand prevent dangers ofpests.”

We proceeded toKanchaung field wherePawhsanhmwe paddy isbeing cultivated. We sawfemale paddy transplant-ers, paddy seedlings andthe farmers who wereweeding the paddy fields.

We saw swaying of

paddy seedlings in thebreeze and paddy trans-planting of local womenwith the blue sky in thebackground.

While visiting thepaddy fields, we met alocal farmer weeding onthe paddy dykes.

In an interview, hesaid, “My name is U KyinNgwe and I am a villagerof Uto Village. I am en-gaged in cultivation ofpaddy on 9.5 acres offarmlands included in122.65 acres of arablelands in Kanchaung field. In recent years, I grewAyeyawady Pawhsan-hmwe paddy strain.

This year, I repeat thePawhsanhmwe paddywhich is popular paddystrain in Kanchaung field. At present, I am satisfiedwith the conditions ofseedlings and cultivationtask. Therefore, I forecastto yield 70 baskets ofpaddy per acre.”

By the end of this cul-tivations season, qualityPawhsanhmwe paddystrain will be produced inKanchaung field. We wit-nessed the farmers whowere making efforts foryielding a large volumeof well-known Uto-Pawhsanhmwe paddy. We had an interview witha farmer who was makingsoil preparation for culti-

the grade-2 qualityPawhsanhmwe paddystrain. The paddy strainhas 98 per cent purity and85 per cent success in

vation of paddy.The farmer ex-

plained, “I am U ThanShwe and I am a residentof Uto Village. I amworking 7.28 acres offarmlands in the area ofKanchaung field. I haveplanned to grow finequality Pawhsan paddyand sell the quality paddystrain this year. Now, Iam cultivating well-known Pawhsanhmwepaddy.

I believe the farmerswill make handsomeprofit from growingpaddy. Moreover, we arepleased that we can dis-tribute the well-knownPawhsanhmwe paddystrain to other farmers.”

The local farmers arecarrying out their agri-culture tasks without dif-ficulties because AyeyaPathein Company is pro-viding necessary assist-ance for cultivation ofpaddy to the local farm-ers.

By distributing qual-ity paddy strain to localfarmers, the qualityPawhsanhmwe paddywith fine scent and tastecan be consumed in thefuture not only in PatheinTownship but also in theentire nation.

ABUJA, 9 July—Nigeria’s most prominent militant group sabotaged oilpipelines operated by Shell and Agip on Wednesday, further cutting production inAfrica’s biggest energy producer. The Movement for the Emancipation of theNiger Delta (MEND) said gunmen attacked the pipelines in two separate raids nearNembe creek in Bayelsa state in the Niger Delta.

Attacks against the OPEC member’s oil sector have become a near dailyoccurrence since President Umaru Yar’Adua announced an amnesty offer twoweeks ago.

“The plague of sabotage descended heavily on major Shell and Agip crudetrunk lines in Bayelsa state,” MEND said in a statement. The pipelines connect toAgip’s Brass and Royal Dutch Shell’s Bonny crude oil export terminals.

Agip’s parent company Eni said the attack caused a production loss of about24,000 barrels per day, while Shell said it was still looking into the report.

A military spokesman said soldiers foiled an attempted attack on an Agip-operated oil well in Tebidaba in Bayelsa state early Wednesday. It was not clearif the incident was related to the pipeline attacks.—MNA/Reuters

CHICAGO, 9 July— US researcherssuggest a protein found in vegetables— glutamic acid — may lower bloodpressure.

The study, published in CirculationJournal of the American Heart Associa-tion, found a 5 percent higher dietaryintake of glutamic acid as a percentageof total dietary protein was correlatedwith small reductions in blood pressure.

Lead author Dr Jeremiah Stamler ofthe Feinberg School of Medicine atNorthwestern University in Chicagosaid it is estimated that reducing a popu-lation’s average systolic blood pressureby 2 millimeters of mercury could cutstroke death rates by 6 percent and re-duce mortality from coronary heart dis-ease by 4 percent.

The study involved 4,680 adults in

China, Japan, the United Kingdom andthe United States, who were enrolled inthe International Study on Macro/Micronutrients and Blood Pressure. Each had eight blood pressure tests, fourdiet recall surveys and two 24-hour urinecollections.

Stamler added there no data exists ontaking glutamic acid as a supplement, but suggested improved habitual foodintake instead of “popping pills.”

Common sources of vegetable proteininclude beans, whole grains — includ-ing whole grain rice, pasta, breads andcereals — and soy products such as tofu,Stamler said.

Durum wheat, which is used to makepasta, is also a good source of vegetableprotein.
