PERSPECTIVES

Unity is strength ofthe Union

* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

Myanmar is home to more than 100national races and they have been livingtogether in unity and amity through thickand thin. This indicates the nation’s highstandard of culture and the existence ofharmonious society.

National races living in various partsof the country have their own languages, cultures, traditions and social customs. However, they have Union blood andUnion Spirit in common. They are likebrothers born of the same womb or likefruits of the same stem.

It was through the unity of nationalraces that national independence andsovereignty was regained. As anindependent people, they will alwayssafeguard and defend their independentnation. Now they are building a modern, developed and discipline-flourishingdemocratic nation.

It is necessary for the entire nationalpeople to take part in the drive for a newdemocratic nation being built inaccordance with the national policy – non-disintegration of the Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity andperpetuation of sovereignty. History andnational experiences show that it is veryimportant for the national brethren tocultivate Union Spirit in their hearts forever.

Only if national unity is strong willthere be peace and stability and a modernand developed nation emerge. It isnecessary for the entire national peopleto place special emphasis on non-disintegration of the Union, defend it andguard it against the dangers of internaland external destructive elements.

Unity is strength of the Union. Therefore, it is necessary for all nationalbrethren to be always united, upholdingtheir fine traditions and maintainingfavourable conditions existing in theUnion.

LONDON, 20 Jan—Bar-going Britons may soonbe bidding goodbye totheir country’s all-you-can-drink deals — as wellas some of their more out-landish drinking games.

The government said onTuesday it was banning ir-responsible promotionsand boozy contests suchas the “dentist’s chair” —where alcohol is poureddirectly into customers’mouths — in an effort to

tackle Britain’s binge-drinking problem.

The government saysthe ban will limit binge-drinking, but health ex-perts say the nation’sdeepening alcohol prob-lem would best be tackledby imposing higher mini-mum prices on Britain’scheap booze.

The raft of new meas-ures is “better than noth-ing,” according to CarysDavis, spokeswoman forBritain’s Alcohol Concerncharity. But she said therestrictions “seem tame”compared to what thegovernment could do byending pricing practicesthat result in alcohol sell-ing for less than water.

“You’d be hard-pushedto find a health organiza-tion that doesn’t supportminimum pricing,” shesaid. Britain’s alcoholconsumption has risen by40 percent over the pastfour decades, althoughper-capita drinking is stilllower than in many otherEuropean countries — in-cluding Russia, Spain,Germany and France.
