Through the evolutionary process of this city block, new relationships can be established between new and existing, while enhancing the lifestyles and experiences of students and residents alike. Close knit interaction is encouraged between different constitu-ents through the architecture, forming a new type of living community. This newly introduced edge of city blocks promotes urban development within the city itself instead of outward sprawl.
Situated in the Parisian suburb of Bourg-la-Reine, the new student center addresses the town’s unique and ambiguous relationship to central Paris. Bourg-la-Reine is quickly evolving from being a convenient link to Paris into a community with its own identity. The project fully engages and integrates into the existing fabric of the city in the most tangible way possible in a process that actively decomposes and grows.

6. program integration
2. subtractionremove parts of existing buildings to connect separate podium levels
3. connectionextend podium level to service all buildings on the block, while enforcing connection to the city through the RER and the Cardo
1. existing site conditionoverall block is segregated into two distinct parts
5. decomposition/growththe new gradually begins to consume the existing. through this active process of simultaneous emergence and decay, the block’s identity transforms seamlessly.
4. additionnew program and buildings are added along the podium, creating different spatial qualities in relation to the existing

program strategies
1. segregationThe project is separated into distinct zones based on program.
2. connectionThe link between program is articulated, but distinct zones are still apparent.
3. entwinementProgrammatic spaces intersect at strategic locations. Though the types of spaces are dispersed, there is an organizational methodology, creating greater control over user interaction.
4. integrationExisting residents become integrated into the project spatially, and programmatically. Rather than being seen as an intrusion, the project is considered a welcomed addition that encourages communal interaction.
5. immersionThe existing residential changes and morphs to enhance the spatial and living experiences of both the residents and the students. The distinction is no longer between the existing and new; it is now changed, unchanged, and added.
