This is when the users have no control over what

they see.

Give more examples of this form of multimedia.

buttons to advanced screens, VCR-like controls, clickable objects, links and

text boxes for question responses.

Give more examples of this form of multimedia.

Solves problems w/ microfilm.

Complete Encyclopedia Britannica stored in a space of a match box.

It would do complex mathematical equations. (this would allow the user more time to be creative)

He recognized that advanced technology will provide an opportunity to shape new media to solve human needs.

ALAN TURING TURING MACHINE

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 16

Not only is Alan Turing the father of all modern computer science, he also was the single individual most responsible for breaking the Enigma code during World War II, and he laid the foundation for artificial intelligence by posing the Turing Test in 1950.

DOUGLAS ENGELBART HUMAN MACHINE INTERACTION

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 17

He is best known for inventing the computer mouse,[1] as a pioneer of human-computer interaction whose team developed hypertext, networked computers, and precursors to GUIs.

THEODORE NELSON HYPERTEXT & HYPERMEDIA

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 18

pioneer of information technology. He coined the terms "hypertext" and "hypermedia" in 1963 and published it in 1965. He also is credited with first use of the words transclusion, virtuality, intertwingularity and teledildonics. The main thrust of his work has been to make computers easily accessible to ordinary people. His motto is:

A user interface should be so simple that a beginner in an emergency can understand it within ten seconds.

ALAN KAY GUI & MULTIMEDIA COMPUTER

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 19

Kay is one of the fathers of the idea of object-oriented programming

He conceived the Dynabook concept which defined the conceptual basics for laptop and tabletcomputers and E-books, and is the architect of the modern overlapping windowing graphical user interface (GUI).

SIR TIMOTHY JOHN "TIM" BERNERS-LEE HYPERTEXT - WWW

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 21

Is a British engineer and computer scientist and MIT professor credited with inventing the World Wide Web, making the first proposal for it in March 1989.[2] On 25 December 1990, with the help of Robert Cailliau and a young student at CERN, he implemented the first successful communication between an Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet.

The Multimedia Revolution

Key Terms Adaptive Multimedia: This is when the

developer provides advanced forms of interaction to adapt the presentation of information to the needs and interests of the user.

Artificial Intelligence: The branch of computer science dealing with the reproduction or mimicking of human-level thought in computers; The essential quality of a machine which thinks in a manner similar to or on the same general level as a human being.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 23

Key Terms Basic Interactivity: This is when

interaction includes menu selections, buttons to advanced screens, VCR-like controls, clickable objects, links and text boxes for question responses.

Berners-Lee: Is a British engineer and computer scientist and MIT professor credited with inventing the World Wide Web.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 24

Key Terms Bush: was an American engineer and science

administrator known for his work on analog computing, and the idea of the memex, an adjustable microfilm viewer which is somewhat analogous to the structure of the World Wide Web.

Dynabook: created by Alan Kay in 1968, described what is now known as a laptop computer or (in some of its other incarnations) a tablet PC or slate computer with nearly eternal battery life and software aimed at giving children access to digital media.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 25

Key Terms Engelbart: an American inventor and early

computer pioneer. He is best known for inventing the computer mouse, as a pioneer of human-computer interaction whose team developed hypertext, networked computers, and precursors to GUIs.

Expert Systems: Is a software that uses a knowledge base of human expertise for problem solving, or clarify uncertainties where normally one or more human experts would need to be consulted.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 26

Key Terms GUI: (Graphic User Interface) Is a type

of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices and with images rather than text commands.

Hypermedia: is used as a logical extension of the term hypertext in which graphics, audio, video, plain text and hyperlinksintertwine to create a generally non-linear medium of information.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 27

Key Terms Hypertext: is text displayed on a computer or

other electronic device with references (hyperlinks) to other text that the reader can immediately access, usually by a mouse click or keypress sequence.

Immersive Multimedia: This is when the user is placed into an alternative world, that allows him to engage the system intellectually, emotionally and even viscerally.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 28

Key Terms Interactive Multimedia: The term is used

in contrast to media which only use traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material. Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms.

Intellimedia: This is another word for Immersive multimedia.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 29

Key Terms Memex: The memex is a device in which

an individual compresses and stores all of their books, records, and communications, which is then mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility.

Metamedium: Is a machine that could embody any medium (such as the Dynabook).

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 31

Key Terms Modeless: Users would be able to move

seamlessly between different media, not thinking of themselves as confined to writing, painting, or animating mode.

Multimedia: Is media and content that uses a combination of different content forms. Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 32

Key Terms Nelson: is an American sociologist,

philosopher, and pioneer of information technology. He coined the terms "hypertext" and "hypermedia" in 1963 and published it in 1965. The main thrust of his work has been to make computers easily accessible to ordinary people.

No-Interactive Multimedia: This is when the users have no control over what they see.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 33

Key Terms Trails: Are associations (mind maps) of

given items that could be preserved, copied, shared, modified, and linked to other trails.

Turing: Not only is Alan Turing the father of all modern computer science,

and he laid the foundation for artificial intelligence by posing the Turing Test in 1950.

3/6/2011 Prepared by Khuzaima Jallad 34

Key Terms Turing Test: is a test of a machine's ability

to demonstrate intelligence. A human judge engages in a natural language conversationwith one human and one machine, each of which tries to appear human.

Turing: Not only is Alan Turing the father of all modern computer science,

and he laid the foundation for artificial intelligence by posing the Turing Test in 1950.
