Many children who visit the centre have a disability affecting their movement control. Targeted Training addresses these issues. Consequently, a course of therapy can help children to gain essential functional skills. Gaining these skills can make a child far more independent. YSGOL ACREFAIR NEWSIt has been a busy term in Ysgol Acrefair, filled withlots of exciting times. The year started with lots ofnew topics in our classrooms, from learning all about‘ourselves’ in Reception to World War 1 in Year 6. Allof the children in Year 6 came to school dressed asevacuees and spent the day in role. They exploredthe way that they might feel if they were to beevacuated from their home and away from theirparents. They used this experience to help bring theirwriting to life. Following on from this the year 6children visited the arboretum in Burton on Trent tofind out more about the impact of World War 1.Other trips this term have included a visit toWrexham museum and a visit to Danger Point. We were glad to welcome so many people to StMary's church in Ruabon for our Harvest Festival andagain, more recently, for our Christingle concert.Children from Years 3, 4 and 5 sang beautifully andhelped us to feel very festive. Back in school the

During the final week of term our school choir wentout on tour and visited some of our local residentialhomes for 'Carols and a cuppa'. Mrs Martin and MrsBrown were so proud of the children's singing and thechildren loved their time chatting to the residents. On 20th December the children all took part in theReindeer Run to raise money for Nightingale House.Together they raised more than £900 and there is stillmoney coming into school. In September the Estyn carried out their inspection ofYsgol Acrefair and we were pleased to achieve arating of 'good' in all areas. You can read Estyn’s report at https://www.estyn.gov.wales/provider/ysgol-acrefair

Year 6 children wowed us with a fabulous panto'Ali-baba and the Bongo Bandits' which they haveworked on with Claire from Activate drama and ourinfant children all performed brilliantly in theirconcerts ‘It’s a baby’ and ‘Countdown to Christmas’too. Thanks to everyone who joined us.With stalls selling the children's own crafts alongsidelots of external sellers, the Christmas fair was a greatsuccess. The elves in the secret room were busywrapping presents all night so lots of our children'sparents would have woken up to a lovely surprise gifton Christmas day. Thank you to all who helped out.

Movement Centre Event continued:Our little girl Lacey is 2 years old and has weakmuscles, because of this she doesn’t sit, stand orwalk, The Movement Centre has provided her witha bespoke standing frame that supports her lowerbody so she can just work on strengthening smallerareas of her torso at a time, this is called ‘TargetTraining’. We go back for regular reviews to TheMovement Centre every 8-10 weeks and the aimis to slowly lower the frame as she becomesstronger, the results this charity has from targettraining are excellent. As it’s a charity we have tofund part of the standing frame ourselves, and asyou can imagine it doesn’t come cheap!Tickets went on sale and we managed to sell 144tickets, the room held 150 people, we were alreadyoff to a great start!! Some people said they couldnot come but still wanted to donate so I set up a just giving page. Ialso asked local businesses for donations and once my salon clientsheard about what I was planning the raffle donations came in thickand fast.We also wrote to larger companies for auction prizes and managedto secure something for everyone, from a spa day for 2 at LionQuays, VIP tour at Airbus, hand knitted Mr & Mrs. Clause, 2 signedWrexham Football shirts, Velocity tickets at Zip World and the star ofthe show a signed Wales Rugby Union ball!!In total with everyone’s help we managed to get 109 raffle prizes and23 auction lots. On the night the auction alone raised over £1300!The evening was a real success, Cefn Druids football club let ususe the function room and bar staff for free, there was a fantastic DJ(who gave us a super knocked down rate), Simply Ribbons andGriffiths Tool Hire donated all the decorations and we provided ayummy buffet which we prepared ourselves earlier on the day.We totally exceeded our expectations with what we raised, so far thetotal is over £4000!!!I wanted to do this event, not only to raise money for Lacey at The

MovementCentre, but also tohelp raisea greaterawareness of this amazing charity as we onlyfound out about it through Lacey’s, godmothers,mother-in-law going to a woman’s local clubwhere The Movement Centre were giving a talkabout what they can achieve for children withmuscle needs.

We thought this was a good opportunity to thank youfor all your support of the Welsh Blood Service inNorth Wales this year! We’ve had a bumper year fullof changes with more yet to come but have still seenan increase in our collections – an amazing feat, andthis is in no small part due to your hard work andsupport to make your local sessions a success. Since our recent restructure, we've moved tolargely social media based promotion for which yoursupport in posting, sharing, liking and commentinghas been invaluable and I know this has helped usto increase donations in the latter half of the year. 2018 has seen us start to post ‘Thank-you’messages on social media letting local communitiesknow who much blood they donated at a recentsession and if they missed the session, when thenext one has been scheduled for. Finally in 2018 the Welsh Blood Service in NorthWales collected an amazing 20,895+ donations, welcomed 3,521 new donors and registered anadditional 626 people on our Bone Marrow register. You may not know but each donation we receive, gets split into 3 different parts (red cells, white cellsand platelets) so these donations will have gone onto save or improve the lives of over 62,685desperately ill North Wales hospital patients. To round up, thanks to our supporters and donors, the Welsh Blood Service has had a fantastic yearand we/I look forward to working even more closelywith you in 2019. From us all at the Welsh BloodService, thank-you sincerely for all your support –we hope you had a great Christmas and will have aneven better new year.

COME ALONG TO DISCOVER“THE SECRET OF HAPPINESS”The Meeting Place returned to The CRNCA, inJanuary. Our next meetings are on 3 February,3 March and 7 April. There’s cuppas & cakes from10.15am, for a 10.30am start - all ages welcome. Our theme in the New Year gatherings will be: “TheSecret of Happiness” . We hope to help all whocome along find the way to a more fulfilling life, nowand for ever. At “The Meeting Place” we dare tohave fun, then chat about our reactions to a topic andlearn more about it together, as we enjoy somethingcakey with a cuppa of our choice. We’ve craft, colouring, toys and a toddler area too - there really issomething for EVERYONE! Give it a try in 2019.“The Meeting Place” (TMP) is run by Cefn MawrChristian Fellowship - all sorts of people from all sortsof churches locally - and none! If you come along, you’re in and BELONG! Usually 11 days after a TMPgathering we have an open Social evening on aThursday from 7-9pm. There’s some snacky food(unless its Harvest!), pool and table games but mostlytime to chat with friends old and new. We had many“guests” at our Harvest Supper and a bigger meal.In November we marked the Remembrance 100anniversary with a sculpture of the 1914 ChristmasTruce borrowed from Cefn Druids FC where one ofour leaders is now the Club Chaplain. We heard aboutyoung Percy from Cefn who died at the front onlyweeks before war ended, whose story was discoveredwhen a history professor found his letters home to hisgirlfriend in Vron. It was very moving to hear aboutPercy and as we shared in some simple readings andprayers of thanksgiving for the sacrifice of so manyand the peace we enjoy today.

December had CEFN COMMUNITY CAROLS withspecial guests Ysgol Cefn Mawr Choir. We thoughtabout the true spirit of Christmas - giving not getting -because God gave the world the gift of his eternal lifeand love in His Son, Jesus Christ. Nearly 80 localpeople of all ages enjoyed the Carols and Christmas-yrefreshments that followed. A good time was had byall! The God we share about at “The Meeting Place” isloving and good, and wants everyone to enjoy hisblessings that’s why He invites us all to draw near toknow Him better and by following Jesus to experienceHis love, joy and peace now and always. CEFN MAWR RANGERSThere is very little action scheduled forour teams in January and as yet nofixtures for February have beenpublished. The Club do though haveexciting news, in that we are looking tostart a couple of kids teams for next season, tofurther expand our club on the back of the recentintroduction of the reserve team. More info will follow, when we have confirmed the age groups we havemost interest from.We will also, look at the possibility of introducing a"Mum's Football" initiative, where ladies will have anopportunity to, Keep Fit, and Make Friends throughfootball. This is in very early stages, but we arehopeful this will come to fruition. With the introductionof the new, youth/kids teams and possibly the Mum'sFootball, we have had an application accepted for thecurrent Tesco's Bags of Help, to provide somefunding for these initiatives, so when you are outshopping, be sure to pop your blue token in our potwhen we appear on the board, thanks.

Our ground staff workhard to keep the playing surface and the surroundingarea clear and safe for the children to play on so weask everyone to respect the work they put in and beresponsible. We are seeking a loan for this fromthe Business Development Banc of Walesand have put together a supporting BusinessPlan. To be successful in securing therequired loan it will be necessary for allparties to work with us. The main ones beingWCBC, CRT and Eastman Chemicals. We are taking this step to initiate theregeneration of our community throughSustainable Tourism Development. Thegeneral plan is to build a cable car systembetween the Windborne Gate (WBG) Parking

lot and the Crane. We will also install 2 x Zip wires adjacent to the cable car route so that people can enjoy rid-ing both over the former works site. The cable car will be linked to the Ebenezer which we plan to reopen as anArts & Visitor Centre that will provide display space to the Cefn Community, Museum & Historical Society,Local Schools, Groups, Artists & Artisans etc. as well as the static displays showing off our community and theredevelopment of it. On the second floor will be a display model of the Cefn, for the general idea see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K1UdZXc9DM

The Ebenezer failed for two main reasons, a lack of foot fall and no parking. By linking the WBG to theEbenezer with the CC system, the problems are solved. There are 330,000 people visiting the aqueduct annuallyand if only 10% ride the cable car, this still delivers 33,000 tourists onto our streets, enough to keep the Ebenezerbusy. Our main problem will be getting WCBC & partners to work with us, but we hope they will come aroundsince this will be the key, they seek and a major boost to the economic future of our community.

We estimate with the addition of the CC & Zip Wires the visitor count will rise to around 400,000 annually andour mean estimate of operation is 20% which willprovide the operating costs for the Ebenezer. This meansthat we will be able to offer the display spaceto our community. We also intend to run trainingprograms as we originally said in 2012 to work withour young people. This will enable them to work with usand look for work outside our community both on andoffshore which we will encourage them to do. To help usdo this we will be looking at establishing links with otherbodies such as the Princes Trust. We intend to pursue thison behalf of our community and can be successful if therelevant bodies will work with us. If you like this ideayou can help, like us on Facebook, it will show WCBCand all that we want this.

Happy New YearDavid Metcalfe,Cefn Community Councillor & AONB Champion.
