Page 2 Saint John the Evangelist From Father Kibaki June 23, 2019 THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

This is my confession, please forgive me: The education system of an African child was coded in stories and myths; I guess this influences my writing and preaching too. Nevertheless, today may not be an exception: An Atheist in a heated debate asked a Bishop, “How is it possible that bread and wine should become the Flesh and Blood of Christ?” The Bishop answered, “You were little when you were born. You were able to grow big because your body changed the food you consumed into your flesh and blood. If a man’s body can do this then God can do it far more easily.” “How is it possible for Jesus to be wholly and entirely present in a little Host?” he asked. The Bishop an-swered, “Look at the landscape before you, and consider how much smaller your eyes are in comparison to it. Now within your little eye there is an image of this vast countryside. Can God not do it in reality, in His person, what is done in us by way of a likeness or image?” Then the Atheist continued with his interrogation, “How is it possible for the same Body to be present at the same time in all your churches and in all the consecrated Hosts?” “Nothing is impos-sible with God,” the Bishop said with conviction. Thoughtfully he added, “But nature also answers this question. Let us break a mirror into pieces. Every piece can carry the same image that the whole mirror formerly introduced, like-wise, the self – same Jesus reproduces Himself not as a mere likeness, but as a reality in every consecrated Host. He is truly present in each one of them." (Anonymous) Last Sunday we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Trinity – a great mystery. Paradoxically, it may be the most difficult of all mysteries but the most accepted by many Christian denominations. I honestly think that understanding the Mys-tery of the Body and Blood of the Lord and accepting it would have been easier than the Mystery of the Trinity. Did Jesus institute the Eucharist because He wanted to be present to us under the form of bread and wine or in order to be worshipped or to enable us to pray to Him and ask for favors? This may not necessarily be the issue, but Christ wanted to remain with us, to be our food that nourishes our souls. Saint Irenaeus put it beautifully, “He has declared the cup, a part of creation, to be His own blood, from which He causes our blood to flow; and the bread, a part of creation, He has established as His own body, from which He gives increase unto our bodies. When therefore, the mixed cup (wine and water) and the baked bread receive the Word of God and becomes the Eucharist, the body of Christ, and from these the Substance of our flesh is increased and supported.” The Eucharist is shared among broth-ers and sisters, thus those who eat the body and drink the blood of Christ do so to be identified and become one with Him. At this sacrifice, the lives of the faithful, their praises, their sufferings, their prayers, their works, are united to those of Christ. Its effect is to the living and the dead, those present and those absent, it doesn’t matter whether you understand the language or not, but, when well disposed it has the lifting experience; it heals, transforms our lives and brings new experiences. But the biggest issue is that sometimes we are occupied with so many worldly experi-ences that the spiritual experiences lack a space for a transforming effect on us. In reality, nobody who attends Mass (whether he/she has received Communion or not) should go home the same way he/she came. The Eucharistic cele-bration is not like a disco party, or a fashion show; it is a moment of deep reflection on our spiritual well being that will help us discover ourselves more. In fact, it needs our attention, disposal, preparation; being seated at least 5 minutes before kickoff, say a short prayer, invite and allow the Holy Spirit in your life, present your whole self as you wait for the opening song. Jesus instituted the Eucharist when he celebrated the Last Supper with his apostles in a Passover meal. The Church has remained faithful to this command “Do it in memory of me”. It is a memorial in the very sense that it makes pre-sent and actual the sacrifice which Christ offered to the Father on the Cross. The Eucharist has remained the Identity of the Church of Christ today; it is the beauty that He left us with. It is the only Sacrament (out of 7) that subsists by itself. After the Words of Consecration, it stands on its own, even if one doesn’t believe that it has become the Body and Blood of Christ, his non-belief does not change anything. (Even if the Priest himself after the Conse-cration starts doubting his action, it does not make any difference). Whoever receives it, receives the real Body and Blood of Christ our Lord. AMEN
