STORM WATER UPDATE
REBUILDING TOGETHER BERGEN COUNTY LAUNCHES FIRE SAFETY PROGRAM
Moonachie residents can have new 10-year lithium-battery smoke alarms installed at no cost thanks toRebuilding Together Bergen County and a donation from the American Red Cross. If your home needsadditional smoke alarms (or if you would like to replace your current ones with battery-operated alarms thatwill last 10 years without replacing the battery), give Rebuilding Together a call at 201-447-8886. Alarms will be installed by Rebuilding Together, so you must make an appointment and behome when the work is done. Additionally, you will receive fire-safety information and must sign a waiverthat the alarms were installed. Installations will generally be done on weekdays. There are no age orincome restrictions for this program (and renters as well as homeowners are eligible). However, low-incomeseniors who own their home may be eligible for additional help. About Rebuilding Together BergenCounty: Rebuilding Together Bergen County is a nonprofit that provides critical home repair and homemodifications for health, safety, and accessibility, at no cost to low-income homeowners thanks to generousdonors and volunteers. Its crews have worked on dozens of local homes that were damaged by SuperstormSandy. For more information or to make an appointment for smoke alarm installations, call 201-447-8886 or email [email protected].
In the past year, the Borough has been extremely busy working with the State, the County, our neighboring towns, and the Federal Government to improve our storm water systems in the Borough.
The storm water systems are the storm drains in and on the streets, the Storm pump stations (one locatedon Lincoln Place and one at the Burger King) and the many waterways throughout the borough: ditches, streams, creeks, and slotes.
All of these water ways are regulated by the Federal and State government. There are many laws and regulations that must be followed to maintain our waterways.
So far this year we have vacuumed the Burger King ditch with the new jetter-vacuum, jetted the West Commercial drain pipe, started vegetation clearing at the Sova Place ditch, swept the streets morethan 12 times since April, cleaned a number of storm drains around the community, identified possiblelocations for back flow preventers, and met with DEP for guidelines on what we can and cannot do.
You can do your part by not littering (litter gets into the storm drains and clogs the storm drain systems).
Working together we make our community more resilient.
