The first edition was produced by Rosalyn Pursglove in 1984.

The second edition (1994) by Rosalyn & Paul Pursglove, on behalf of the South

Holland Family and Local History Group, included memorials revealed after alterations in the church and the removal of carpeting in the chancel. Some inscriptions were recorded in more detail than in the first edition. It also included

enhancements from Monson‟s Church Notes1 where inscriptions previously recorded had become badly worn.

This third edition is principally a more accurate account and fuller indexation

of inscriptions identified in the previous editions. There are now two indexes: one is of those people commemorated individually or

by family, of many of whom precise details are given; the other is of those killed during the World Wars, most of whom are identified simply by name(s).

Researchers may be able to discover more in local archives such as those of the Lincolnshire Archives Office2 and Spalding Gentlemen‟s Society3 and in other

publications about this church‟s history, as well as nationally in, for example, the National Archives4 which houses the records of war casualties. In even the short period since the second edition many memorials have further deteriorated, in some cases to the point of illegibility, though all details known

about them in the past are included in the interests of historical completeness. Alongside these are a number of stones which have undoubtedly borne text and in some cases also portraits or designs on brass but which are now irretrievably

damaged or worn. A third group of stones obviously still bear text but it is now inaccessible, such as the stone beneath the step of the font. And of course there will very likely have been memorials now completely lost and even monuments,

such as along the north wall of the Corpus Christi chapel, whose original state and identification can only be guessed at.

Set against this tale of steady deterioration and what it implies about human transience are firstly, the fact that there are other lasting „memorials‟ around the

church, some like windows displaying their often poignant dedication - see particularly the first window along the north wall - and others maybe less

conspicuous but no less significant, and secondly the very fabric of the church building itself which bears eloquent though silent witness to the commitment of countless faithful people. It is written of Wren in St Paul‟s cathedral “If you seek

his monument, look around you”; this is theirs.

John Grundy was born in Market Bosworth, Leicestershire, in 1719. He moved to

Spalding with his parents in 1739 when his father, also a John Grundy, was appointed agent to the Deeping Fen Adventurers. John Grundy assisted his father in his work in Deeping Fen and during this time he gained wide experience

in applied mathematics and civil engineering. He began to take on projects of his own. One of his first was the construction of a sluice at Pinchbeck in 1739. After his father died in 1748 John Grundy was appointed agent to the Deeping

Fen Adventurers in his place. He also gradually accepted more and more commissions from outside the South Holland area, including work on the great

lake at Grimsthorpe Castle for the 3rd Duke of Ancaster. He is also noted for his work on improvements on the River Witham, Louth Navigation, the grand sluice at Boston, the first dock in Hull and navigation and drainage schemes at

Holderness, Swale and Driffield. John Grundy was also a very successful businessman, having interests in both

shipping and farming. He lived at the side of the river Welland in Spalding, owning a large estate comprising house, gardens, stables, warehouses, wood and coal yards, an oil mill, offices and brewhouse. He owned a sloop named „The Good

Intent‟ and a barge named „Polly and Lydia‟ after his two daughters. John Grundy married twice. His first wife was Lydia Knipe, daughter of a local clergyman. They had 14 children but only two survived, and Mrs. Grundy died in

1764. John Grundy‟s second wife was Mrs. Ann Maud, a widow from St. Neot‟s. John Grundy was a member of the Spalding Gentlemen‟s Society. He was also a

founder member of the Society of Civil Engineers and he did much to bring professional repute to the job of Civil Engineer. He died in 1783. John Grundy and his wife Lydia (née Knipe) are buried in the family vault within

the church.

Lot Mael was a draper in Spalding, owning a property in the Market Place, next to the White Hart Inn. He was a very wealthy man: it is said that he gave each of his

four daughters £10,000 on their wedding day. He also left provision in his will for six coats, six gowns and 40 shillings a year for the poor of Spalding. In a copy of

Howgrave‟s Stamford Mercury dated 30 January 1734/5 there is a notice of the sale of Lot Mael‟s drapery business in the Market Place and the letting of the house “where here may be a very fair estate got.” Lot Mael married twice, the second time in 1738 to Mrs. Alice Ambler (see also no.12). She was the widow of Joshua Ambler of Gayton House (later Fairfax

House then Holyrood House). This house used to stand at the side of the River Welland on the site of the present Social Services Offices (formerly the Town Hall) next to the Parish Church. Lot Mael later lived at a house called Wisteria Lodge

on Double Street. He became a member of the Spalding Gentlemen‟s Society in 1724. 14 Here lyeth the body of William Peares who departed this life the 14th day of

Memoria eorum sit benedicta.

The Hobson Family were great benefactors in Spalding. They gave money towards the purchase of land and buildings, and two silver flagons and a bowl were left to

the church as sacramental vessels. The family also left money to buy a house for the widows of the Ministers and Schoolmasters of Spalding.

John Hobson of Spalding was responsible for the building of the Town Hall, eventually finished after his death. This building stood in Hall Place, Spalding (on the site of the paved pedestrian area). He gave one fifth of the rents from the

shops on the ground floor of the Town Hall to the Ministers of Spalding and four fifths to the Town Husbands for the poor of Spalding. The Hobson family lived at

Gayton House (before the Amblers - see also no. 13).

18 Walter Johnson, eldest son of Walter Johnson, clerk, and Frances his wife, died December 10th 1799 in the 10th year of his age. Also Gresham Ambler Johnson, their fourth daughter, who died December 25th 1801, aged 3 years.

This memorial is now virtually illegible; the account above of the text dates from some time ago. It is said that the young Walter died at Uppingham School where he was a pupil. His father Walter was perhaps the brother of Colonel Johnson,

making Fairfax Johnson his elder brother- see no.16.

This stone was placed over him by the order of William Perry of Penthurst, in Kent, Esq, his kindsman and heir, male.

Captain John Perry carried out a number of works concerned with the draining of the Fens around Spalding. In 1730 he was appointed engineer to the Deeping Fen

Adventurers and had many schemes for improving the drainage of the area. He started by building a great sluice on the Welland near Cowbit Wash. He also erected the sluice at the end of the old Vernatt‟s drain and other sluices at

Surfleet, Pode Hole and Deeping Bank.

of Foot Guards died 3rd of Dec 1793 in the 80th year of his age. Elizabeth, his wife, died 21 Oct 1752 aged 30 years. Mary his second wife, died 21 Jan 1773 aged 45 years. Walter Maurice, son of the Revd. Maurice Johnson D.D. & Ann Elizabeth his wife died 10th Nov 1791 in his infancy. The Reverend Maurice Johnson, Clerk, AM, eldest son of the above was born 29th of March 1788 and died December 6th 1820. Frances, wife of the said Rev Maurice Johnson died the 6th July 1815 aged 28 years.

Perhaps here is the best place to tell the story of the Johnson family of Ayscoughfee Hall, Spalding. In 1658 Sir John Walpole sold Ayscoughfee Hall to Mr John Johnson of Pinchbeck. The Hall passed to his son Francis who had three

children: John, Jane and Isabella. After John and Isabella died Jane (see no.35) became sole heiress of her father when he died in 1685. In 1683 she had married Maurice Johnson (no memorial) of Spalding, and her husband became the first of

six Maurice Johnsons to live at Ayscoughfee Hall in direct succession. The second Maurice Johnson (no memorial), son of Maurice and Jane, was the

famous antiquary and founder of the Spalding Gentlemen‟s Society. He was also

10

librarian of the Society of Antiquaries. He married Elizabeth Ambler of Gayton

House, later Fairfax then Holyrood House, and they had 26 children, twelve of whom lived to maturity.

The eldest son of these was Colonel Maurice Johnson (1714-1793)(see also no.37). He was vividly described by John Byng, 5th Lord Torrington, in his description of his visit to Spalding in 1790.

The fourth Maurice Johnson was Reverend Maurice Johnson (1756-1834), incumbent of this church from 1782 until 1825 (see also no. 48). He married Ann

Elizabeth Buckworth of Cley Hall in Spalding. Their son, the fifth Maurice Johnson (1788-1820), was also a clergyman. His wife Frances died in 1815 after the birth of their son, the sixth Maurice Johnson.

This last Maurice Johnson (1815-1864) eventually moved his family away from Spalding, finally settling in Suffolk where he died. He married twice; a statue of his first wife Elizabeth can be seen in the church (see no. 33).

Eight hatchments associated with members of the Johnson family and some of its

connections are displayed along the nave of the church. There is an account of them published separately and available in the church containing a genealogical tree which also refers to many of these people.

33 To the memory of Elizabeth Johnson, wife of Maurice Johnson, of Spalding, Esquire and Daughter of the Revd. Thos. Mills of Peterboro‟. This monumental record is dedicated by her sorrowing husband. To society an ornament, to her family and friends a blessing, a duteous daughter, a devoted wife and mother, in youth and beauty she passed away with full promise of every earthly enjoyment yet lived she for a better world, a bright example of Christian faith and Christian hope, triumphant over death. Thus her life, for others sake too brief, sufficed for her. Its holy work was done. What she was to sight, this marble form pourtrays, what her virtues were, is the sacred trust of memory. She died Sept 25th 1843, in the 27th year of her age.

Elizabeth was the first wife of the sixth Maurice Johnson (see memorial No.32).

They had one daughter Elizabeth Ann. (His second wife was to be Isabella Mary Swan; they had four daughters: Mary Isabella, Frances Alethea, Edith Millicent and Frances Maude) 34 Here lyeth the body of Mrs. Em Love who died Aug 6th 1680.

A faithful priest, an upright magistrate, a loving husband, a true and helpful friend, he gave to God and the people of this his native county a life‟s work of great ability and leading influence in many spheres of public usefulness. That his genius for architecture was conspicuous and well employed, this church and others newly built or restored in his deanery, bear ample witness.

“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Even so saith the Spirit, for they rest from their Labours.”

Canon Edward Moore was the son of the Revd. William Moore and his wife Anne Elizabeth. He married Elizabeth Sarah Stephenson in 1838. As indicated in the

memorial inscription he took part in many town activities. For 31 years he was

headmaster of the Grammar School. He was a magistrate and also served on

many other committees like the Board of Guardians and Town Husbands, and was Commissioner of Sewers. He was instrumental in the provision of three other

churches in the town: St John‟s, St Peter‟s and St Paul‟s, and also the restoration of this Parish Church. He and his wife are buried in the porch of the parish church at Weston. 46 In memory of Derek Graham Jakeman M.A.Cantab. Vicar of Spalding from

1959 until his death 16th May 1982 aged 61 years. Canon of Lincoln, Prebend of Leighton Bosard, Rural Dean of Elloe West, faithful pastor of his people.

A Memorial probably to Elinor wife of Philip Jolley. Philip Jolley was a surgeon in

Spalding. He was buried in 1666.

63 Philip John Elinor and Philip Claydon Elinor

Possibly children or relatives of Philip and Elinor Jolley (see No.62 above). Once again the same Christian name has been used twice in the same family. As to the

use of Elinor and Claydon, perhaps Philip Jolley‟s wife Elinor was a Claydon. In 1681 a Claydon Jolley, Gent, was fined by the churchwardens for not paying the church rate: £50. He too must have been a member of this family but was

probably a dissenter. In the registers of 1637 is recorded the baptism of Claydon, the son of Philip Jolley Gent and his wife Elinor Claydon.

The Oldfield (Oldfeild) family were originally from Bingley in Yorkshire but came

to Spalding at the end of the 16th Century. In 1609 Anthony Oldfield, a lawyer, purchased the living (the right to appoint clergy) of Spalding, but sold it soon

after to the Hobsons of Gayton House (see no.17) and various other men who became feoffees. They in turn reserved the right of burial in the chancel to the Oldfield family. Both Anthony and his wife are buried there (see 66 and 66a) and

several later Oldfields including Dame Elizabeth. She was the wife of Sir Anthony Oldfield of Spalding who is also buried in the chancel. Their daughter Mary

married William Ambler of Spalding. (The Amblers lived at Gayton House next to Ayscoughfee Hall after the Hobsons. Elizabeth Ambler, a daughter of this family, married Maurice Johnson the Antiquary. (see notes on the Johnson family

See also no.54 for mention of a Stephen Sanderson Ingram who was probably the

eldest son who placed the memorial in this church. Note again the use of the same name for two children in the same family. See also no.51. These Sandersons could be members of the same family.

76 Beneath this monument are deposited the remains of John Richards, Esquire,

who died August 10th 1773 aged 45 years. Also near him lies the body of Judith Richards his widow (daughter of John and Ann Pulvertoft formerly of Peterborough in the county of Northampton) who died November 9th 1811 aged 81 years.

This John Richards is the son of Sir John Richards in no.77; it is recorded that he erected the stone inscribed in Latin to his father. He built Holland House on

the High Street, later lived in by the Johnson family.
