WHEELING NEWS-REGISTERJOHNSON 1842 - 1902 On Monday, Feb. 10, 1902, at 3:55 p.m., George W. Johnson, in his 60th year. Funeral from his lateresidence No. 2334 Market St. Thurs. afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment Greenwood Cemetery, Friendsof the family invited to attend.

WILLS;LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF GEORGE W. JOHNSON I, George W. Johnson, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, publish anddeclare this to be my last Will and Testament, and direct the payment of all my just debts. I give, devise and bequeath to my beloved wife Julia E. Johnson, all the personal property of which Imay die seized. I also give to her for her use as long as she may live and remains my widow the homeproperty No. 2334 Market st. occupying the south 1/3 of lot No. 122 in Chapline and Eoffs addition tothe city of Wheeling, at her death the aforesaid home property shall be sold, and the proceeds of said

sale shall be distributed as follows: each of my five oldest children, to-wit; Robert H., Louis B.,Harris, Isabelle and George B. Johnson shall recieve the sum of twenty-five dollars (25.00), and theremainder shall be equally divided between Earl and Elmer Johnson, my two youngest children. In theevent that my wife Julia E. Johnson should again marry, I direct that the home property, above referredto, shall be sold, and the proceeds of such sale, after deducting my wifes dower interest, shall bedistributed in the same ratio and manner as though my wife had remained my widow until her death, to-wit: 25.00 to each of my 5 oldest children, and the balance to be equally divided between my 2youngest children. WHEELING NEWS-REGISTERRogers Rites Monday; Services For Aged Center Wheeling Resident in Schmeichel Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, funeral services will be held in the chapel of the Schmeichelfuneral home for Mrs. Julia Harris Johnson Rogers, 87, widow of W. W. Rogers, who died Saturdaymorning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. N. Lancaster, 2334 Market Street. Rev. B. F. Donley, pastor of Chapline Street M. E. church, will be in charge. Interment is to followin Greenwood cemetery. Mrs. Rogers was born in Uniontown, Pa., September 19, 1849 and was brought to Wheeling by herparents when an infant. She had resided in Center Wheeling her entire life. Mrs. Rogers received hereducation in the Wheeling public schools and was a member of the Chapline Street M. E. church. Surviving are four sons, Louis B. Johnson and Elmer Johnson, both of Cleveland, O., Harris Johnsonand George B. Johnson, both of this city; one daughter, Mrs. S. N. Lancaster, also of Wheeling, and anumber of grandchildren.

WHEELING NEWS-REGISTER Footnote on a vanishing Wheeling landmark, from a former South Wheeling resident whoremembers days gone by; To complete U. S. 250 North, the bulldozers have cut a wide gash where the house stood, and thekids who gathered there are grandparents. But the memory of a rich experience lives on. In the early 1930's Mr. Johnson came out the front door of his home at 2344 Wilson St. everysummer Sunday morning with the News-Register in hand. He had a great shock of White hair and aruddy, friendly face. He wore a dress shirt with detachable celluloid collar, detached, wide olivecolored suspenders, black trousers, and highly polished black shoes. Mr. Johnson sat down on the wide gray steps of his house to study the news. Soon his children,Francis and Marie, Laughlin, Baron and Kelsey, joined him; Then kids from all over the neighborhoodgathered on the steps. They waited patiently for Mr. Johnson to get to the comics, which he read to them. Radio's UncleDon was a rank amateur compared with Mr. Johnson, for only he could pack so much drama in DickTracy's stalking "The Blank." Who better than Mr. Johnson could mimic the German accent of theKatzenjammer kids as they stole Mama's prize pies and tormented the Captain? But the best was to hear Mr. Johnson laugh at these antics. He would slap his thigh and laughjovially, and all the kids joined in and forgot for an hour the deprivation of those days.

Hewas born October 27, 1877 in Cameron, West Virginia. He died November 9, 1958. He was a chartermember of Ohio Valley Camp No. 1 of Wheeling, West Virginia which was organized October 25,1919. He was State commander for West Virginia from 1924 to 1926. I don't know what happenedthen but he was dropped from membership September 22, 1933. Thus that is all the information I havein our files.

LANCASTER, SAMUEL N., retired electrical contractor, died Sunday at 4:15 a.m. at his residence,2334 Market St. He was born Oct. 20, 1877 at Cameron, a son of Benjamin and Sara Ogle Lancaster.He was a member of the First Christian Church and served with the First W. Va. Volunteer Infantry inthe Spanish-American War. Surviving are his widow, Isabelle Johnson Lancaster; two sons, Elmer andWilliam of Cleveland; one daughter, Mrs. Esther Stimmel of Cleveland; one brother, Charles, ofHundred; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His shocked colleagues said Stimmel apparently shot himself. They ruled out possibilities someone shot him but also said there is a small chance the shooting wasaccidental. Stimmel's .38-caliber service revolver was found near the body. Stimmel, of 4218 Archwood Ave. SW, a 25-year veteran, returned to the station around 10:40 p.m.after investigating a downtown bookstore robbery, police said. His partner, Patrolman John Paul, wasphoning information to the police records center and Stimmel told Paul he would meet him at theircruiser. Stimmel's body was found at 10:48 p.m., 12 minutes before he was to go off duty. He is survived byhis wife and two children.

LANCASTER, RONALD R., 57, of N. Ridgeville, died Friday at Lakewood Hospital after a shortillness. Born in Wheeling, W. Va., he lived in North Ridgeville 21 years. He was an engineer from Ohio Bell, worked there 35 years, retired in 1991 and was a member of theTelephone Pioneers, an internal organization of Ohio Bell workers. Mr. Lancaster was in the Navyduring the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Julia A.; sons Bret R. of Mobile, Ala. and Dean E. of Euclid; a daughter,Madel A. Lancaster of Olmsted Township; five grandchildren; and brothers William D. of KansasCity, Mo. and Richard N. of Parma. Inside the purse were a number of papers, receipts, etc., but what caught Madel's eye

most was an original Civil War Pension Certificate, with the names of Charles Fonnerand his widow Mary Fonner on it. Curiosity got the best of her, and she had to find outwho these people were, that was the beginning of a 20+ year search for her familyroots, And the results are here in these files.

Lancaster recently earned the honor as USS Dale (CG-19) Sailor ofthe Year for 1985. Born, raised and schooled in North Ridgeville, Ohio, the 27-year-old electrician's mate is responsiblefor electrical maintenance and watchstanding, and is his division's training petty officer and assistantworkcenter supervisor.
