Tekia… Shevarim… Teruah… Tekia Gedolah… No, it’s not Rosh Hashanah yet, but it’s getting close. How close? Well, for the entire month of Elul (starting Monday, Aug. 9) we blow the shofar at weekday minyan to remind us that Rosh Hashanah is coming.

Why do we do this? There are some serious explanations, and some amusing ones. My favorite is that we blow the shofar to confuse the prosecuting angel. We blow for thirty days, and on each day, the prose-cuting angel grabs its papers and runs to the courtroom, only to find out it’s not Rosh Ha-shanah. Again, and again, the entire month of Elul we do this, and each time, the angel is misled. Until finally, 30 days later, the angel is convinced that this shofar blast is yet another false alarm, and ignores it. That day is Rosh Hashanah, and so we, the people of Israel, are able to gather and pray without having to defend our case, only needing to recognize where we have fallen short, and doing our best to make amends.

Of course, there are also some serious explanations as well.

1. God proclaimed as ruler. In ancient times, some empires would announce the coming of a ruler in advance by bang-ing drums, or blowing instruments. Rosh Hashanah is when we recognize God as our ruler, with the services perhaps representing

a coronation ceremony. 2. A Reminder. It’s easy for us to pro-

crastinate until the last minute, or forget to prepare. Every day when we hear the Shofar, it’s a reminder for each of us that we should prepare for the High Holidays, and think about both the good and the bad we have done over the past year.

3. Remembering the Torah. According to some commentators, Moses went up to Mt Sinai to receive the second set of tablets on the first of Elul, returning on Yom Kippur. That act of forgiveness by God, and the re-pentance of the people, are exactly what the season is about. So we blow the shofar each day Moses was on Mt. Sinai the second time, to keep that memory fresh.

So as we enter the season, I encourage you to listen to the sound of the Shofar (and join us for Minyan during the week.) Think through the past year, recognize the good you’ve done in the world, and work on mak-ing teshuvah (repentance) for the bad. And if you finish that early, well, you’ve also helped confuse the prosecuting angel, and there’s nothing bad about that.

As July begins, we are in the midst of the Three Weeks between the 17 of Tammuz, when the walls of Jerusalem were breached, and Tisha B’Av, which commemorates the destruction of the two Temples in Jerusa-lem in 586 BCE and 70 CE. During this sad time on the Jewish calendar, we chant three Haftarot of rebuke in which the Jewish people are chastised for their poor behavior. After Tisha B’Av, we read seven Haftarot of consolation, which culminates with the cele-bration of Rosh Hashanah. Please join us for

Tisha B’Av services on Saturday, July 17 at 9:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 18, at 8:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. as we mark this day in Jewish history where so many tragedies took place. Our sages teach us that one day this sad day will become a happy one.

On Monday, Aug. 9, we celebrate Rosh Chodesh Elul. It is on that day that we begin sounding the Shofar each morning and each evening except for Shabbat as we prepare for the High Holidays. As you undoubtedly know, Rosh Hashanah begins this year on the evening of the Monday of Labor Day, Sept. 6. Rosh Hashanah cannot fall out earlier than it does this year.

ning, Aug. 28, at 8:45 p.m., beginning with a program at Congregation Beth Chaim in West Windsor. We look forward to gathering with other congregations in our area under the auspices of the Board of Rabbis of Princeton Mercer Bucks with the support of the Jewish Federation of Princeton Mercer Bucks.

I am very excited to serve as President of Beth El. This is an amazing community that cares about each other, cares about the Jewish people, and cares about helping others. We have created a unique and nurturing Jewish space.

For those who don’t know me, my family has been members of Beth El for eight years. My wife Celeste is the Chair of the Membership committee. We have two children. Reina, 10, and Stuart, 6, who feel right at home at Beth El. I first volunteered with the Israel Affairs Committee and then joined the board as VP of Ritual and Education. In my second term, I had the privilege of chairing the search committee that led to the hiring of Rabbi Matt as our Education Director and Prayer Leader.

Why do I and so many others volunteer here? Because we have a great community and I want to see it continue to flourish. We are big enough to have something for everyone, but small enough to know everyone.

I am looking forward to an exciting two years as President. With much thanks to Ben Genek, Doug Harris, and Skip Berman, we have begun the process of using the proceeds of our recent refinance to take care of much-needed major maintenance items. Nicole Ostrowsky-Fabisch and Jake Gertsman are leading a team to methodically prioritize and the work that we need to keep our building and grounds in good working order.

With the building on the path to be in good working order for years to come,

we also have to work very hard to get more people to use it. I want to continue to expand our efforts to engage people in all demographics. I want more people to take classes with our Rabbis, participate in Social Action projects, or any of the myriad programs we offer. And I want us to make sure we promote ourselves and get the word out to the broader community that Beth El can be their Jewish home too. I hope to use future articles to spotlight the great work that happens throughout the Beth El community.

It is hard to believe that the High Holidays are right around the corner. If things keep holding like they are, I think services will run much like we are used to.

Coming out of the last year and half, normal means a lot more than it used to. Stay tuned for details from the Re-opening Task Force as the holidays get closer. All services will go out on Livestream, and if you aren’t

comfortable coming yet, that’s okay—we can still be together virtually. We are fortunate to have Cantor Raquel Pomeranz Gershon returning for her third year with us and we are planning for our full complement of youth services.

I hope that you all have a wonderful summer!

For all of us 2020–21 have been chal-lenging years, no matter where you fall on the demographic spectrum. There have been many issues and many unknowns.

However, one thing that has not been unknown has been our Beth El Community. The clergy as well as the greater communi-ty has been there for us in so many differ-ent ways. There have been calls, emails and texts from Rabbi Jay and Rabbi Matt checking to see how we were doing. Beth El members have done the same. Members of Beth El have been shopping for us, help-ing us secure vaccine appointments, helping us with computer issues as well as helping us negotiate Zoom and Livestream.

The Observant LifeThis monumental work was written by thirty rabbis and took ten years to produce. It describes

in detail what it means to live a Jewish life according to the tenets of Conservative Judaism. In this class we will read selected topics from The Observant Life and discuss how they affect our lives as individuals and as a community. This class is taught by Rabbi Kornsgold.

Introduction to Judaism Class on ZoomAre you interested in learning more about Judaism? Perhaps you have always wanted to learn

about your heritage but never had the time. Perhaps you are thinking of coming back to Judaism after being away from it. Perhaps you know of someone who is thinking of converting to Juda-

ism but needs a way to get started. Perhaps someone in your family is Jewish, and you want to understand their religion to support them better.

The Jewish Federation and the Board of Rabbis of Princeton Mercer Bucks are cospon-soring “Introduction to Judaism” class. The class meets on Zoom every Tuesday from 7:30–9 p.m., starting on Oct. 5 and finishing on Feb. 22, 2022.

The course is designed to meet all these needs and more. In 18 weeks, we will touch on many important aspects of Jewish life: the holidays, history, life cycle, literature, beliefs and practices of Judaism.

The classes will be taught by rabbis, can-tors and other Jewish professionals from the Mercer–Lower Bucks County area. Everyone is welcome, and the cost is minimal.

If you have been at Saturday Shabbat services in the last few months, especially for a bar or bar mitzvah or baby naming, you probably left with a “Kiddush on the Go.” Women’s League has been listening to the synagogue reopen committee to find the best way to bring lun-cheons. Please be in touch with the Reopen Committee with questions.

Why am I am writing about Kiddushes? Who doesn’t like egg salad, tuna salad, and lox on a Saturday morning? But seriously it’s more than that, our normal is returning. The days of sitting around with our friends and catching up and just chatting will be back, along with celebrating many simchas in person.

The weekly Kiddush lunch at Beth El has always been special and somewhat unique to our congregation. Not every synagogue has a Kiddush each week for a regular Saturday Shabbat service, but we do. It’s part of what makes Beth El so special, those meals, those conver-sations, those relationships. I remember one of my friends who are not members asking me about our Kiddush lunches and his surprise when I told him that it they are because his synagogue didn’t do that each week.

Beth El has always been welcoming, and it’s one of the reasons my family joined and continues to support our synagogue. It’s about our community and the spirit of kehillah that I feel every time we come for services, religious school or events. And even during our year plus of Covid—that spirit never was lost. Beth El maintained its welcoming energy.

In the coming months, I hope to see you at one or all of the services, kiddushes, events that occur at Beth El. Please also save the date for the Women’s League Membership Brunch on Sunday, Oct. 17.

Beth El SeniorsHello, everyone. Happy First Day of

Summer, as I am typing this on June 20. Our final meeting of the current 2020-

2021 year featured Rabbi Jay speaking about the vagaries of the Jewish calendar. It was a fascinating discussion that went on for over an hour and could have gone on for another hour. Thank you so very much, Rabbi Jay.

At one point in our discussion, this question came up: if a child is born in a year when there is only one month of Adar, but his/her Bar/Bat Mitzvah falls in a year when there are two months of Adar, when does the Bar/Bat Mitzvah take place. Rabbi Jay had to do some research, and this is what he reported back to me:

“I confirmed what I said during the program. If a child is born in a year where there is one Adar, if in the year of the child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah there are two Adars, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah is in the Second Adar.”

Thank you, Rabbi Jay, for the clarification.It is my fervent hope that our June program

was our last program exclusively on Zoom. The synagogue is now permitting groups to have meetings in person, so the programs that Dora and I plan for next year will be for in-person meetings, although I hope to be able to Zoom them for those who are not able to come in person. In addition, we will pivot to Zoom in the event of inclement weather, or if G-d forbid we need to close the synagogue again due to The Virus.

I am thrilled to report that we will have our Opera program this year, on Monday, Aug. 22, in person! The theme of the program is “Domestic Intrigues and Machinations.” For security reasons, advance reservations will be required, as indicated in the flyer on p. 17, so please reserve the date on your calendars if you plan to attend. Anyone coming to the door without a reservation will be turned away by the security guard. Masks are now optional, but are requested to be worn by anyone not vaccinated.

Now that Summer is here, I hope you are able to get out for a daily walk to enjoy the good weather. I wish you all continued good health and safety, and a relaxing summer season.

Aside from all we previously mentioned synagogue life did not miss a beat. Services continued initially on Zoom and then on Livestream. Religious School as well as great programing continued. Rebecca was available via email or phone to answer the many ques-tions we all had. The reopening task force had meeting after meeting so Beth El could open safely following CDC guidelines. Our custodians, Anthony and Dave, implemented some of the guidelines following cleaning protocols. Beth El has given us so much.

Now it is time to show our appreciation by giving back to ensure the future of Beth El. How?? This can be accomplished by participating in the Life and Legacy Program. The program gives members the opportunity to include Beth El in their longterm estate planning. Meaning, you can add Beth El as a recipient of an estate gift after you pass. This does not in any way impact your life or your current lifestyle. Let’s come together. Beth El cares. We need to show we care about Beth El so we ensure Jewish continuity and Jewish traditions that are so meaningful to us all.

underwear and socks in children’s or teen sizes to the Synagogue.

(By the way, you don’t have to spend a lot to DO a lot. The

best brands to buy are those you find in local supermarkets and discount stores.)

Be a Minyan Mitzvah Maker!Beth El Minyan Mitzvah List

These have been difficult times for ev-eryone. We were grateful to have been able to restart our in-person Minyanim up again during the summer of 2020 so that we could offer opportunities to gather (socially distanced or via Zoom) for prayer, especially for those wishing to say Kaddish. What hasn’t changed is that, in order to make this possible, we do need at least 10 Jewish adults present at Beth El during each service.

Are you in a position to help? If you are comfortable coming in for a short (20 min-ute evening, 45 minute mornings) service to help ensure we have that Minyan, that minimum of 10?

We are resuming our weekly emails asking a small number of congregants to help each week. We realize not everyone is comfortable or able, but if you are one of those who can make it to a service at least once in the coming week, it would be greatly appreciated.

Minyanim are held in person and on Zoom Mondays and Wednesdays at 8 p.m., Thursdays at 7:15 a.m., and Sundays at 8:45 a.m., as well as at 8:45 a.m. on secular holidays. Check the calendars on pp. 18–19 for changes.

Celebrate Your Birthday & Anni-versary at Beth El

We will continue to offer a special prayer on the second Friday of each month and the fourth Saturday morning of each month for all those children and adults celebrating a birthday and/or anniversary during that par-ticular month.

What a wonderful way to celebrate these happy times in our lives by attending ser-vices, giving thanks to God and coming together with your Beth El family.

Social Action Lawrence, Trenton, and surrounding areas. Many of their most dedicated volunteers

are aging and limited in their ability to serve. Without new volunteers, Greenwood House will need to reduce the number of days they deliver meals, limit the number of their clients, and/or service a much smaller geographic area.

Volunteers must have a car and be available to deliver meals between approxi-mately 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Even a commitment of one day a month would be helpful.

Beth El’s “Essential Products” Program

We are collecting personal and household products to complement our Food Bank dona-tions. Local food banks need deodorant, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dishwashing and laundry detergents—everything that families need but that are not purchasable with Food Stamps. Products that come in small packages are preferred.

When illness strikes, a most meaningful way to show Beth El’s community “haimishe” char-acter is to pay a visit. Bikkur Cholim—Beth El’s committee that makes visitations—needs your support. Please volunteer to be available when called upon to make a visit when the need arises.

It will be many months until we are fully able to assess the total impact of the COVID-19 virus on the world and here in our Jewish Community, but we know that the most vulnerable communities will be hardest hit. Jewish Federations were made for times like these. We are the safety net and the support system that sustains Jewish communal life and our community never has been more in need than today. The stakes could not be higher.

The Jewish Federation of Princeton Mercer Bucks is mobilizing to meet these needs by launching the Jewish Communi-ty COVID-19 Response Fund of Greater Mercer, a comprehensive, collaborative response to help our local agencies and synagogues, and the constituents they serve. The Fund provides support for a broad array of current and anticipated social services and offers emergency assis-tance to those most vulnerable and impact-ed in our community.

Jewish Federation of Princeton Mercer Bucks will match the first $50,000 donat-ed to the Jewish Community COVID-19 Response Fund. 100% of all donations to the Fund will be distributed directly to grant recipients.

In addition to looking at the text, we will be discussing the world in which the sages quoted in Pirkei Avot lived and how their perspectives were likely to have been influenced by that

Tot Shabbat 2021Tot Shabbat for young children through

kindergarten, and their parents, usually takes place on Shabbat mornings, twice a month, starting at 10:30 a.m. It is led by Danna Liv-stone with participation by Rabbi Kornsgold and Rabbi Nover.

Are you interested in learning more about Judaism? Perhaps you have always wanted to learn about your heritage but never had the time.

thing…. We blindfolded her. All the other cousins got into groups of two and stuck a leg into the pillowcase. The official “ready, set, go” was sounded and off we went. Aunt Rose was laughing so hard, she barely went three feet, so she didn’t win. Half of us fell anyway in sheer hys-terics. Only two groups made it to the imaginary finish line.

This is what family does. We make our own fun. We don’t wait for someone to entertain us, we do it ourselves. This is what Women’s League is about. We make our own fun. All we ask is that you partici-pate. We are all so busy working and taking care of family that we for-get to stop and see what else is out there. For those of you that attended the Women’s League brunch, I hope you had a good time. We have more Sunday morning programs planned. Take the time to come to one or three of them. Meet some great women and expand your family!

Jewish Family and Children’s Service for Meals on Wheels. It gives you the barest of information (enough to get the idea), but there is one thing missing—the personal touch.

Very often, people (in need due to illness, being a shut-in, too tired to cook) feel a bit embarrassed to call and enroll in the program. This program takes some of the worry about eating properly out of your hands. The food is very good, costs only $5 a meal (open to discussion), and is delivered in a timely manner.

The people who deliver the meals are kind, considerate and very polite. JFCS does ask for a commitment of one month sign-up. After that time you can continue or cancel. If you will be away, you can postpone delivery and then restart it when you return.

Now is a good time to call and get included. Please contact Beth Englezos at the JFCS office by email at [email protected] or call (609) 987-8100, ext. 126. This program is a wonderful way to make at least one mealtime in your home carefree. Meals are strictly kosher and

prepared at Greenwood House.
