From Our Rabb for Yom Ha-Atzma’ut By Rabbi Dr. Julie Hilton Danan

Rabbi Dr. Julie Hilton Danan

This month marks Israel’s 66th Independence Day. After nearly two millennia, we are the blessed generation to experience having a sovereign Jewish nation reborn in the land of Israel. The revival of Hebrew as a spoken language, the ingathering of exiles and refugees, “deserts blooming” with agricultural advances, leadership in science and technology, and an incredibly vital society and culture are just some of the modern miracles of Israel. Most of us who feel a strong connection to Judaism have been strongly influenced by time spent visiting, studying or volunteering in Israel. Since I’ve been at CBI, we’ve had many cultural programs and talks about Israel, and Nitsa Schiffman has led several congregational tours of Israel, bringing many of our congregants to visit the Jewish homeland.

I’m excited to invite everyone to celebrate with us on Friday, May 9, at 6:00pm when we have our first-ever “Israel Seder.” This inspirational evening will involve songs, reading, media, music, dancing, and food. The Israel Seder is a new program being developed by Rabbi Sami Barth, a professor of liturgy at the Conservative Movement’s Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, and CBI has been chosen as a test site. Rabbi Barth has taken the most popular Jewish ritual, the Passover Seder—a time-tested way of bringing Jewish history to life—and applied it to learning about and celebrating Israel.

Even as I write this column, I am deeply discouraged by the lagging Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts that have been so boldly and tirelessly advanced by our Secretary of State, John Kerry (and in which my own daughter Liora has played a part). Success demands leaders on both sides who are bold, courageous, visionary, and deeply dedicated to achieving peace. And it demands a public (on all sides, including here in America) who believe in that peace and advocate its success. In addition to public diplomacy, we cannot have enough of dialogue and efforts of those—like our own Michael Leitner or Nitsa’s nephew Levav Weinberg—who are bringing Arabs and Jews together for peaceful pursuits and encounters that help us get to know one another as human beings and neighbors.

Meanwhile, closer to home, I’ve become convinced that our congregation needs to establish a dedicated group in which to learn about and discuss Israel in all its dimensions, and to promote more extensive Israel programming. Our local press is dominated by a small group of activists who are single-mindedly focused on condemnation of Israel (with nary a word about

injustice and violence in the rest of the Middle East). They are part of the BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) movement that is succeeding where war and terrorism failed, in delegitimizing the very word “Zionism.” Their voices and influence are growing, and I feel that our small Jewish community is pushed into a reactive position, with only a few people taking an active role.

We need to organize ourselves, and our allies throughout the community, to educate our fellow citizens about Israel in all its aspects: its history, achievements, and efforts for peace. We need to show Israel in the broader context of the neighborhood of nations surrounding it. Especially in a college town, we need to support our Hillel when they are in a campus atmosphere that is too often hostile to Zionism and Israel, and thus hostile to Jewish students.

And, we need to do all this while within our own community we hold many different viewpoints and affiliations on Israel, from AIPAC to J-Street. Jewish communities throughout America sometimes struggle to talk among ourselves about Israeli politics and security issues, because we can’t agree among ourselves between those Rabbi David Cooper has called the “guardians” (emphasizing Israel’s security and safety), and the “prophets” (emphasizing Israel’s need to fulfill the ideals of the Torah and Jewish values). And, in our small and close-knit community, we are understandably loath to bring up areas of disagreement. But I’ve noticed at CBI that we do listen to different viewpoints with open minds, and we certainly can’t counteract the virulent anti-Israel voices if we can’t talk openly among ourselves.

For a role model, take a look at what congregation Beth Haverim in Davis is achieving with its “Israel Matters” Committee: http://bethaverim.wordpress.com/about/cbh-board-committees-and-groups/israel-matters-committee/

Therefore, this Yom Ha-Atzma’ut, I invite you to come to our celebration, and I also encourage you to join me in forming a group to continue to study, discuss, learn, teach, and respond about Israel. Please let me know if you would like to join this effort. If you have friends in the broader community who might be interested, please invite them to join us at our Israel Seder on May 9 to begin our conversation.

Shul School Ruth Gordon, DirectorAfter Pesach we change our focus to the Hatikvah and learning about Israel. On May 6th we will go on a field trip to Chico State for the Israeli Independence Day celebration. Michael Leitner will be speaking and showing slides about Israel before we join the crowd for Israeli dancing and food. This event is open to everyone (Ayers 120, 4 p.m.).

We will be finishing off the year at 5-mile recreation area for an end-of-the-year party on May 20th. We’ll be playing games, swimming, eating hot dogs, and saying goodbye. This has been an amazing school year and with the most outstanding students ever! Have a wonderful summer!

From the President Donna Greenberg

Happy May everyone! I cannot believe another year is coming to an end and summer is just around the corner. Many of you are in the midst of planning summer vacations and summer projects, but I am contemplating upcoming projects and programs in the CBI New Year. As I am writing this I still have to complete a new slate of board members, which is making me very nervous. I know we are all busy with jobs, school, and family, but we need the full support of everyone to continue making this a successful synagogue. Remember, a synagogue is a community and as part of this community becoming involved allows you to be better connected. You have a say in programs, help bring in new members, be creative with fundraising ideas and become better acquainted with fellow members, and of course have fun. Please consider becoming a board member; I cannot do this by myself and with just a few others. And, neither to brag nor complain nor guilt anyone, (okay maybe just a little), I am serving as your President while working full time and volunteering at the hospital.

Join us! Celebrate the year, catch up with friends, honor your community, and learn about the year ahead.

The Annual Membership meeting will be on May 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at CBI. After a brief service, the CBI Board will sponsor a mouthwatering Ice Cream Social Oneg. Rabbi Danan and I will review highlights and accomplishments of the past year and thank our outgoing board. We will then elect our new board and look forward to the year ahead. If you have any issues or questions this is the time to bring them up. I hope to see many of you there!

Once again CBI is helping to send some of our young members to Jewish summer camps thanks to the generosity of Matt and Isabel Fine, our Sisterhood, and the many donations from our members to the Gert Lenner Campership Fund. During the week of May 12th, the students and their families will be notified regarding who will receive funds and in what amount. This will be published in our summer newsletter. Furthermore, as a condition of receiving funding, during Shabbat services each camper will report on their camp experiences. I, for one, cannot wait to hear about their adventures at camp; I hope all of you feel the same too!

From the CBI “Kitchen Boss”The kitchen is the heart of the home and the shul, as well. We truly appreciate all who help keep the kitchen clean, supplied, and organized. Check us out – the CBI Kitchen is better than Facebook for catching up while cleaning up. And, you can earn bonus Mitzvah points.

Special thanks to the Passover Kashering crew – Rhonda Zisle, Ruth Gordon, Cheryl Jackson, Bonnie Mitchell, and Andrew Sabersky (who kashered the ovens with his trusty blow torch.)

Thank you so much to Bev Paull for donating a crockpot, which is handy for preparing our Kiddush luncheons. Thank you as well to Bonnie and John Mitchell for their donation of a lovely silver challah platter as a goodbye gift.

Please Note: Currently we do not need any donations. We constantly cull our cabinets for unneeded or duplicate items. We have recently donated our overflow to the Torres Shelter’s new commercial kitchen.

I have the special honor of being “Kitchen Boss.” I follow in the footprints of our former Shamasheets: Rhonda Zisle and Loretta Steinke who set high standards.

A communal kitchen requires discipline and one person to make the hard decisions. Therefore, please do not reorganize anything in the cupboards without talking to me. There is a logical order to the arrangements.

Feel free to ask me any questions and make suggestions. If you make enough suggestions, you will be volunteered for the honor of being the new “Kitchen Boss.”

In our continuing process of becoming a greener, leaner synagogue, we are really encouraging the use of non-disposable dishes and silverware. Paper and plastic should be used for large events only. Thanks to Haverot Sisterhood members, we have a wonderful, high efficiency dishwasher. Let’s use it!

Last word from “The Boss.” We are calling all the dishtowels home. They seem to have wandered off. Prior Amnesty is granted.

Lag Ba-Omer Picnic and Kite Flying

Tikkun Olam Organization of the MonthIn honor of Israel Independence Day, we present just three of the many Tikkun Olam organizations related to Israel. This is the last in Rabbi’s planned monthly series on Tikkun Olam groups, although others may be highlighted in the future.

The New Israel Fund (nif.org): NIF believes in “an Israel where the Jewish people achieve self-determination in their homeland and where everyone participates in a shared and just society, predicated on the best values of Judaism, humanism and liberal democracy. Our ideals are equality, tolerance and social justice.” This progressive non-profit group provides grants, advocacy, education, and other means to achieve the following goals: equality for all the citizens of the state regardless of religion, national origin, race, gender or sexual orientation; the civil and human rights of all individuals and groups, pluralism and diversity, minority rights, civil society and just peace within Israel and with its neighbors.

Hadassah (Hadassah.org) The largest women’s Zionist group is over a century old and supports Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) that provides medical care to over one million patients a year regardless of race, religion or nationality

(including Rabbi Danan, who gave birth to her second daughter, Elisheva, at Hadassah hospital on Mt. Scopus). In addition, they have sponsored Youth Aliyah, youth movements and camps, education, conferences, travel and the excellent Hadassah Magazine. Currently, due to a severe financial crisis, HMO has filed for the Israeli equivalent of Chapter 11 and is working to develop and implement a recovery plan. Learn more by visiting their website and supporting this important historic organization.

Green Zionist Alliance (greenzionism.org) The Green Zionist Alliance (GZA) is a North American non-profit that focuses on environmentalism in Israel through education, trips (including Birthright and other eco-oriented tours), and advocacy for Israeli and regional environmental causes. GZA describes itself as a group for all those “who care about humanity’s responsibility to preserve the Earth and the special responsibility of the Jewish people to preserve the ecology of Israel.” By focusing on the environment from a pluralistic standpoint, the Green Zionist Alliance “seeks to bridge the differences between and within religions and people — helping to build a peaceful and sustainable future for Israel and the Middle East.”

Sunday, May 18, from 10:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m.Jeremy and Amy Miller are organizing a picnic lunch and kite flying event at Wildwood Park on Lag Ba-Omer, Sunday, May 18, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Participants of all ages are encouraged to bring kites, outdoor games, and a picnic lunch along with a snack to share with the group. Please RSVP to the Millers to

between Passover and Shavuot) is a minor Jewish holiday that relates to historic events during the Bar Kochba rebellion against Rome. It is usually celebrated with outdoor activities.

Kosher Deli Lunch Thank You’sOn Sunday, March 30, CBI’s Shul School hosted a Kosher Deli Lunch fundraiser at CBI.  It turned out to be quite profitable with proceeds benefiting the Shul School.  A variety of kosher meats, sandwich breads, hot soups, salads, and desserts were served.  Extra kosher deli meats were available to purchase for take-home.  Thank you to those volunteers who helped with the event including purchasing foods and supplies, setup, serving, and cleanup.  Thank you to deli lunch chairperson, Ari Hornick, his wife Era Cathey, and their two children Haim Waleli and Simcha Waleli.  Thank you to Ruth Gordon and Arron Rambach who were on-site for six plus hours.  More thanks to Michele Mich, Monica Zukrow, Cheryl Jackson, Maria Naiman, Amy Miller, Andrew Sabersky, and our herculean Rabbi Julie.  The kosher meat was purchased from Save Mart Supermarkets in Sacramento on Fair Oaks Blvd (916-484-7994).  Thank you to Mona at Bella’s Family Market in Chico who graciously allowed us to slice the meat at her market under Rabbi Julie’s kashrut supervision.

Car Wash for Camperships: Gert Lenner Fund Car WashSunday, May 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.Get your car washed for a nominal donation in the parking lot of Sushi King and Boba Tea Zone restaurant at the corner of Esplanade and Cohasset Road in Chico (2190 Esplanade). Proceeds from the car wash will benefit the Gert Lenner Fund, which provides grants to children of CBI families who are members-in-good-standing to attend a Jewish summer camp, such as Camp Tawonga or other camps. Campership grants are very desirable since camp tuition is very expensive.  Children attending camp this summer or in recent summers and their parents will wash cars.  Advance tickets will be available soon for pre-sale.  Advance car wash tickets are available for purchase from parents with Shul School children or teens, or from the CBI office.  Car wash tickets can also be purchased “at the door.”  Car washes are a minimum $5 donation.

Menchkins  Menchkins and their parents celebrated Passover on Sunday, April 13 at the home of Amy and Jeremy Miller in Chico.  The children went on a chametz hunt followed by a campfire to burn the chametz, listened to an engaging telling by Rabbi Julie of the Passover story, sampled a delicious array of traditional Passover foods, and played with a variety of special Passover toys.  Of course, there was a search for the hidden afikomen.  Six children and five families participated.

Menchkin events are held several times during the year and typically focus on a Jewish holiday or theme.  Menchkins are the youngest members of the local and diverse Jewish community in the greater Chico area, from birth to approximately five years old. The events planned just for this group are always informal, playful, and full of songs, hands-on activities, and exploration of the Jewish world.  If interested in attending future Menchkin events, please contact the CBI office.

Congregation Beth IsraelCongregation Beth Israel is an independent, egalitarian Jewish

community whose roots date back a century. The synagogue is

both nondenominational and unaffiliated. Our guiding principle is

K’lal Yisrael, the unity of the Jewish people. True to that spirit, CBI

embraces a diverse membership of Jews from all backgrounds as well

as interfaith couples and those exploring Judaism. We serve about

100 families in the greater Chico area with a wide range of programs for toddlers, tweens, teens, adults, and

seniors. Our Shul School is very strong, and our Sisterhood is very active. Services are generally held Friday

nights at 7:30pm and Saturday mornings at 10:00am.

We also hold services on all major Jewish holidays.

The ideal to which we strive is Mordecai Kaplan’s concept of the “synagogue center,” in which a congregation

serves both as a house of worship and as a community center. Rabbi Julie Hilton Danan provides the

inspirational leadership for our Jewish values: study, Torah; worship and practice, Avodah; social action, Tikkun

Olam; acts of kindness, Gemilut Hasadim; and connection with the Jewish People, Am Yisrael.
