Miss World OrganizationThe Miss World Organization owns and manages the an-

nual Miss World Finals, a competition that has grown into

one of the World’s biggest. Since its launch in 1951, the

Miss World Organization has raised more than £250 mil-

lion for children’s charities. Miss World is franchised in

more than 100 countries. Miss World Limited is a privately

held firm, and thus figures for its earnings, expenses and

charitable contributions are not publicly available.

Aside from raising millions of pounds for charities around

the globe under the banner of its ‘Beauty with a purpose’

program, Miss World is also credited with directly influ-

encing a dramatic increase in tourism in Sanya, China -

host of the Miss World finals from 2003-05.

The PageantIn the year preceding the global finals, each delegate

must win her national title or a specially designated Miss

World national preliminary. Miss World’s national prelimi-

naries are conducted by their license-holders, who hold

the franchise to use the ‘Miss World’ name in their coun-

try. The annual final is typically a month long event, with

several preliminary galas, dinners, balls and activities,

culminating in a globally telecast final show in which the

field is narrowed to between 15-20 delegates.

Awards•Venezuela has won the Miss Photogenic award four

times: (1984,1990,1995,1996)

• Four Miss World winners were awarded Miss Photogenic:

Astrid Carolina Herrera (Venezuela, 1984), Aishwarya Rai

(India, 1994), Jacqueline Aguilera (Venezuela, 1995) and

Diana Hayden (India, 1997).

Fast Track AwardsSince 2003 Miss World pageant also features Fast Track events

during the preliminary round. The winners of Fast Track events

are automatically qualified to enter the final round. Fast Track

events which have been used since 2003 are:

• Beach Beauty (2003-present)

• Miss Talent (2003-present)

• Miss Sports (2003-present)

• Beauty With A Purpose (2005-present)

• Top Model (2004, 2007-present)

• People’s Choice (2003)

• Personality (2003)

• Contestant’s Choice (2004)

• Two Miss World winners were awarded Miss World Beach

Beauty: Rosanna Davison (Ireland, 2003), Kaiane Aldorino (Gi-

braltar, 2009).

• Two titleholders have also won Miss World Top Model: Zhang

Zilin (China, 2007), Ksenia Sukhinova (Russia, 2008)

Winners• Kiki Håkansson of Sweden, Miss World 1951 reigned for the

longest period in Miss World history: 475 days (almost 16

months) from the time she was crowned on 29 July, 1951 in

London, UK.

• Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir of Iceland, Miss World 2005

reigned for the shortest period in Miss World history: for

just 294 days (less than 10 months) by the time she crowned

Taťána Kuchařová of the Czech Republic on 30 September ,

2006.

• There were three back-to-back victories in Miss World his-

tory:

• May Louise Flodin of Sweden, was crowned Miss World

1952 by Miss World 1951 Kicki Håkansson of Sweden.

• Lesley Langley of United Kingdom, was crowned Miss

World 1965 by Miss World 1964 Ann Sidney of United King-

dom. Priyanka Chopra of India, was crowned Miss World 2000

by Miss World 1999 Yukta Mookhey of India.

• The largest interval between a nation winning Miss World is

Peru; Madeline Hartog-Bel won the title in 1967 and, 37 years

later, María Julia Mantilla became the second recipient from

Peru.

• The shortest gap has been India (1997-1999).

• The first black African to win Miss World was Agbani Darego

of Nigeria, crowned in 2001 at Sun City, South Africa.

• The first Miss World of East Asian is Miss World 2007 Zhang

Zilin of China.

The Miss World pageant is the oldest

surviving major international beauty

pageant. It was created in the United

Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951. Since

his death in 2000, Morley’s wife, Julia

Morley, co-chairs the pageant.

Alongside its rival Miss Universe and

Miss Earth contests, this pageant is one

of the most publicized beauty contests

in the world.

The winner spends a year travelling to

represent the Miss World Organization

and its various causes. Traditionally,

Miss World lives in London during her

reign. The current Miss World is Kaiane

Aldorino of Gibraltar.

HistoryMiss World started as the Festival Bi-

kini Contest, in honour of the recently

introduced swim wear of the time, but

was called ‘ ‘Miss World’ by the media.

It was originally planned as a one-off

event. Upon learning about the up-

coming Miss Universe pageant, Morley

decided to make the pageant an an-

nual event.

Opposition to the wearing of bikinis led

to their replacement with more modest

swim wear after the first contest. In 1959,

the BBC started broadcasting the compe-

tition. The pageant’s popularity grew with

the advent of television.

In the 1980s, the pageant repositioned

itself with the slogan “Beauty with a pur-

pose”, with added tests of intelligence

and personality. However, the competi-

tion has been seen as old-fashioned and

rather politically incorrect in its native

Britain. It was during the ‘80s that the

company was owned by Transworld Com-

munications, albeit for a short time. De-

spite the global appeal, the show was not

broadcast on any major terrestrial British

TV network for several years, until Chan-

nel 5 aired it in 1998.

21st CenturyEric Morley died as the pageant entered

the new century. His wife, Julia, succeed-

ed as chairwoman of the Miss World Or-

ganization.

The century saw its first black African win-

ner, Agbani Darego, in 2001. As part of its

marketing strategy, Miss World came up

with a ‘You Decide’ television special

during that edition, featuring the del-

egates behind the scenes and on the

beach, and allowing viewers to either

phone in or vote online for their favor-

ites. It also sells its Talent, Beach Beauty

and Sports events as television specials

to broadcasters.

In 2002 the pageant was slated for

choosing Abuja, the capital city of Ni-

geria to host its final. This choice was

controversial, as a northern Nigerian

woman, Amina Lawal, was awaiting

death by stoning for adultery under Sh-

aria law there, but Miss World chose to

use the publicity surrounding its pres-

ence to bring greater global awareness

and action to Amina’s plight.

During the first decade of the new cen-

tury, Mexico has the best record for any

country: as of 2009 it has consecutive

placements from 2004-2009, two Top

Model winners (2004 and 2009), one

Beach Beauty winner (2008), two 1st

runner-ups (2005 and 2009), one 2nd

runner-up (2007), and three Conti-

nental Queens of Beauty (2005, 2007,

2009).

• In 1976, several countries went on a boycott, because

the pageant included both a Caucasian and African rep-

resentative for South Africa. In yet another shut-out for

the nation for its apartheid policy, South Africa com-

peted for the last time in 1977, before it was welcomed

back in 1991 as that policy disintegrated.

• The 1980 winner Gabriella Brum of Germany resigned

one day after winning, initially claiming her boyfriend

disapproved. A few days later it emerged that she had

been forced to resign after it was discovered that she

posed naked for a magazine.

• In 1996, wide-scale protests took place in Bangalore,

India over the hosting of the beauty contest. The swim-

suit shootings were moved to Seychelles, and heavy se-

curity was placed. Despite the chaos, the pageant’s live

telecast went on smoothly.

• Just days after her 1998 crowning, Israel’s Linor Abar-

gil revealed that she had been raped only two months

before the pageant. The man accused of raping her was

later convicted.

The Miss World pageant has been the target of

many controversies since its inception.

• In 1970, feminist protesters threw flour bombs

during the live event at London’s Royal Albert

Hall, momentarily scaring the host, Bob Hope.

• In 1973, Marjorie Wallace, the first American to

win the title was forced to relinquish the title 104

days into her reign. Pageant officials stated that

Ms. Wallace “had failed to fulfill the basic require-

ments of the job.” The responsibilities and duties

not the title were offered to the 1st runner-up

and was turned down by Evangeline Pascual of

the Philippines.

• The 1974 winner Helen Morgan representing

the United Kingdom was forced to resign four

days later after it was discovered she was a single

mother.

Donatella Versace the designer behind the sexy ‘ Versace ’

With her unfaltering style and business acumen, the ever-fabulous purveyor of glamour is the pow-erhouse behind maintaining the success of the Versace brand since taking over from her deceased brother Gianni. Assuming the reins of the Versace brand, the Italian fashion designer has stepped up from muse and critic to Chief Designer and ulti-mate trend setter in her own right

Born in the Italian town of Reggio di Calabria in 1955, the daughter of a businessman and a dress-maker to the aristocracy, Donatella was the young-est of four children.

She has two children, Allegra, born in 1986, to whom Gianni bequeathed the lion’s share of his multi-million dollar estate, and Daniel, three years his sister’s junior. The fashion house head is mar-ried to Paul Beck, a former model, although the two generally live separate lives.

Donatella brought a new sensibility to the house of Versace. These days, the label is more in tune with the modern career woman, as the former muse has taken her inspiration from the lives of friends such as Madonna, Trudie Styler, Naomi Campbell and Courtney Love. And, while the hemlines might not have dropped along with the price tags, col-lections display more variety while retaining her brother’s original ethos.

What you might not know about her

• Even her home is decorated in strong, Neo-classic prints that Versace is known for. • She is behind the Palazzo Versace in Australia (the first of seven planned worldwide), an upscale hotel that opened in late 2000 that bears the Versace design stamp. • The customer she designs for: Sexy, sleek, and not afraid to be the center of attention. • Notable quote: “My inspiration is still rock and roll, but now it’s lady rock and roll. The look is more refined, and more glamorous.” Donatella Versace to Reuters.

How you can get the look ?

• The Versace look is all about the body -- plunging necklines, slits, short skirts. You need to feel comfortable showing off your assets. • Baggy styles, androgyny, dull -- these are a few of the trends you’ll never find at Versace. • Choose strong, pure colors like white or black, for major impact, but don’t be afraid of color like bright blue for some added interest. • Don’t shy away from feminine florals, but make sure they are big, bold prints. • Dresses are a big part of the look -- choose a skirt length a few inches above the knee for newness. • Never pass up patent leathers, sheer fabrics, beads or sequins or glitter -- these are hallmark, “look-at-me” components!

Before you can really decide what flatters your figure, you’ll need an honest assessment of the flaws in your figure (too busty, big hips, etc.) and a realistic sense of what you hope to accomplish. I.e. look taller, dress sexier and appear younger.

The best way to get a sense of your overall shape is to stand in front of a full-length mirror and squint: this helps you see an outline of your body.

What do you see?A body that is narrower at the shoulders and fuller at the hips is usually called a pear shaped body or bottom-heavy.A body that is wider at the shoulders, and tapers down to narrower hips can either be top-heavy or athletic depending on how physically fit you are.

A body that is almost equally full at the shoulders and hips with a smaller waist is called an hourglass figure.

These are just plain generalizations, and body shapes and types come in a number of variations: long torso, short waisted, tall, petite, etc. you will need to know about every problem you may face on the road to look-ing better in your clothes.

Most of us assess our bodies only in terms of our weight (heavy, on-target or slim) and forget all of the beautiful variations that we can show off and conceal using fashion techniques. So take some time to really assess what your shape is all about.

Every woman has something about her body she’d like to hide, whether it’s heavy thighs, a heavy tummy or a large bottom. With just a few visual tricks, your problem areas will disappear and let your true beauty shine through!

39 September 2010

Body type Skirts Pants Tops Dresses

Bottom heavy

Nothing too tight. A-line skirts that hit around the knee area are ideal because they draw attention away from problem areas. Miniskirts are generally a bad idea because they accentuate heavy thighs.

Pant waists should fall somewhere below the natural waistline for a better fit. A straight or slightly boot cut leg is the most flattering. Avoid patterned or light-coloured pants. Skip fussy details like big cargo pockets or excessive zippers around the hip area. Shorts can be tricky, but for workouts and casual wear choose lightweight, loose-fitting shorts (no bike shorts). Slimming side stripes on shorts can give the illusion of sleekness.

Avoid overly baggy tight tops. Really loose tops will make you look large while the tight tops will make you look out of propor-tion to your hips. Look for fitted (not skin tight) T-shirts and but-ton-front tops. V-necks, turtlenecks and open collars all call attention to the face, which is always a good thing. Jackets and blazers should hit anywhere but the widest point of your hips. That could mean right below the waist to mid-thigh, depending on your height. Wear jackets and blazers open for the best vertical lines.

Look for dresses that nip in at the waist and slightly flare out over hips and thighs. You can pull off a full-skirted ball gown because it will hide heavy hips and thighs. Try sleeveless and strapless dresses to play up pretty shoulders and arms. An empire, or raised waist dress brings the eye up away from problem areas. Careful, though. This can sometimes be mistaken for a maternity look with fuller figures.

Top heavy Balance out a top-heavy figure with an A-line skirt that will give you the look of a waist and more of an hour-glass look. Avoid anything too tight like pencil skirts - because it will only accentuate top heaviness. Play up nice legs with shorter (an inch above the knee) skirts.

Choose flat-front, never pleated, pants that have a lower rise than the natural waist. Five-pocket jeans are your friend! Front pockets on jeans help disguise a tummy problem, while back pockets can help define a flatter rear common to top-heavy women. Avoid skin tight jeans.

Avoid too tight (plays up large breasts too much) and too baggy ( just makes you look heavier). Opt for fabrics that skim the body, preferably knits and woven stretchy fabric for a better fit. V-neck, boat-neck, turtle and mock necks and shirt collars are your most flattering necklines. Play up nice cleavage with a little peek and not a Dolly Parton-sized slice. Especially appealing: a pretty lace-trimmed camisole showing under a jacket or top. Avoid full sleeves or puffy sleeves.

One-piece dress-ing is tricky for you. Best bets: A sleeveless black sheath, a soft prin-cess seamed dress or a strapless dress with corseted top. Resist the urge to cover up head-to-toe: showing a little skin, whether it’s bare arms or shoulders, is much more flattering.

Body basics for every figure: Wear colours that look great on you. Not sure what those are? Grab a trusted friend and head to the mall. Hold up tons of colours next to your face and get feedback from your friend. Hues that compliment most complexions: pink, blue, white (you’ll just need to change the intensity of these colours to suit your colouring, i.e. hot pink for darker skins, carnation for fairer, ivory for olive tones, etc.)

Nobody looks good in high-waisted, pleated pants with narrow ankle openings, but manufacturers still turn these out in droves. Avoid them at all costs!

Don’t worry about being trendy when you look at what suits your figure: concentrate on what flatters, and add up-to-date shoes, handbags and accessories later.

Want that fitness magazine cover model look? That lean, defined, sexy look that sets you apart from ev-eryone else and turns heads? Ask any experienced gym trainer, and they will tell you that you won’t lose fat and build muscle by spending every waking hour in the gym. You’ll just burn out. Instead, you need to use your head and feed your body what it needs. All it takes is a little know-how…

Effective training is essential…The key to your training plan does not lie in hours of car-dio, but in a targeted weight training program with just a few sessions of intense cardio. One of the main benefits of training with weights is that it will help you lose fat without losing muscle. Your program should involve the use of relatively heavy weights that limits you to around 10-12 repetitions.

The routine is based on compound exercises that involve working several muscles at once, such as squats, dead lifts and bench presses. These exercises use more muscle mass and burn more calories and are more effective than most isolation exercises (more variations exist).

When you are on a diet, your ability to recover from a good workout is reduced. Too much exercise can also accelerate the loss of muscle and leave you feeling tired and drained. That’s why we recommend keeping each workout to one hour or less - 30 to 45 intense minutes are best.

You can also use supersets, which involve moving quickly from one exercise to another, with little or no rest be-tween. Rather that resting between sets, you perform an exercise for another muscle group. Studies show that this type of workout fires up your metabolism for almost two days. Your body will also burn more fat for fuel. As an example you might start with the bench press, and do 8-12 repetitions. Then you move straight to the barbell row and do another 8-12 repetitions. Rest for 60-120 sec-onds and then repeat until the required number of sets is complete. However, you won’t be using supersets on all exercises.

Cardio plays an important role in helping you lose fat, but don’t overdo it. Doing 30-45 minutes of intense cardio 2-3 times a week, combined with a good diet and proper weight training routine, is a better choice than doing endless hours of low-intensity cardio, which can lead to a loss of muscle as well as fat.

In the upcoming issues we will be exploring basic el-ements of workouts, providing you with simple ways to add more exercise to your daily routine, including a total-body quick fix. Till then live life to the fullest!

Useful tips for nail

# Rub a slice of lemon under the nails to make them look cleaner and whiter

# Use nail clippers for cutting nails to avoid splits

# Broad nails can look narrower, if you leave a very narrow strip on either side without polish

# Small and short nails can look longer if you ap-ply a light coloured nail polish

# If the nail polish chips, avoid peeling it off. This can remove the protective layer of the nail.

# For long nails, try applying white frosted nail polish on the underside of the nails.

# If you have brittle nails, include adequate pro-tein and calcium in your diet. Take skimmed milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, fish and sprouts. # For brittle nails, follow a ten-day program of taking gelatin. Dissolve one teaspoon of gelatin in boiling water. Cool the water and add it to fruit juice. Have it daily for ten days.

This has been a question that has been asked so many times and who better to pose this question to other than Vimuktthi Jayasundara !Starting off on a light note, we started off on a completely unrelated note: Why have you changed the spellings of your name? “Is this the first question?” he says answering our question with a question. “My sister and my mom are responsible for the change. It’s something to do with astrology. If I use it as often as I could things will apparently be better for me and since it’s really hard to change all the related documentation I changed my name on FB. That’s where my name is used most frequently, so it works… I guess,” he says.

Moving on to some real questions now: How would you introduce yourself to someone who has not heard of you? “I am a very ordinary person; I don’t like to talk too much about what I have achieved.I want my work to speak for itself. I believe in mod-esty.”

What’s the criteria you consider when selecting actors? “Firstly they have to fit the role. When the screenplay is done I try to identify it with someone and picture him or her in the situation. If not, it’s a challenge to find a 100% match to the role, but I try to get some-one closest to the match. There are certain times where the director will compromise a little bit”

Do you prefer beauty over talent? With a slight smile he thinks for a while “well, there are times that talent should take over. However, it depends on the role completely and it is impossible to say that my selection is based on on 90% talent and 10% beauty. Glamour is important, but so are many other things. Glamour is something our films lack and it’s important to strike a bal-ance. I believe that anyone can act and it’s the responsibility of the director to get the maximum out of the actor. To answer the question in short, if I get an actor who is very talented but does not look the part, then I would not cast him or her. It’s all about the image at the end of the day. After all, the film has to sell. ”

Do you think models can act? Yes. Like I said it’s the director’s responsibility to get them to act. When it comes to commercials you can find plenty of nice girls and boys who are interested and talented. But if you look to cast for a film it’s the opposite. It’s so hard to find good people. I don’t know why most people have a phobia when it comes to films; it actually should be the other way around.

Do you think it’s the right thing for a model to turn to acting? Why not? The fame, the money and the power, you mention it you have it here. In this country, we have a long way to go to be like Bollywood or Hollywood. Our standards however are quite good. So it’s the next best thing. But then why have we been unsuccessful in making models good actresses in comparison to India or any other country? “That’s where we go wrong. When India does not compare us to them or think of us as competition, we still compare and compete. Then when we fail to match their standards we complain about it. There is nothing wrong in aiming high. It’s very good. But if you don’t reach the aimed spot, be happy with what you achieved and try to do better next time, instead of whining and making excuses. We should also understand that Sri Lanka is still developing, not just the film industry but as a country as well.

According to you who is the most successful model turned actor? “Without any doubt it’s Aishwarya Rai. Look at what she has achieved today. She is a global icon”.

Does acting need any kind of training? Most certainly, like any other trade it’s important to know the know-hows of the industry. It’s easier to direct someone who knows something about acting. They will perform better and do justice to the role.

?CAN MODELS MAKE GOOD ACTORS?

69 September 2010

You have judged beauty contests - what was that experience like? It was a really hard job at first to understand the concept and to mark the girls. Most of my friends called me up and asked me what I was doing at a beauty pageant. They thought it was hilarious. But since it was advertising related I thought why not? It was fun. Before I was asked to judge it - I had only seen a winner or two and I did not think much of it. But now I know how much of hard work is put into it and the screen-ing process the girls go through.

What was the criteria you used to mark the girls? I was not prepared to give a higher mark to a pretty face. But then again that mattered a lot. I wanted to find a well balanced person; one with beauty and brains. All the judges had various opinions, so I got inspired by them but I made my own decisions at the end.

A model, an actress, a beauty queen, you have dealt with all three. Who do you think has the toughest job?I think an actress. I think a model has one character or a personality she depicts to society. An actress however can have several. In the modeling industry you see new faces everyday-but when it comes to acting - very rarely do you see a talented person entering the industry. I think models and beauty queens should become actresses because you cannot model or be a beauty queen for the rest of your life.

Do you have any advice for mod-els/ beauty queens who want to be actors? The main thing for me is maintaining quality standards. That’s the only way you can see any kind of progress in your career. Acting is not a career you should choose just because you have a lot of money. You have to have a lot of passion and this kind of career needs a lot of dedication.

Any good beauty routine is going to start with skin care to prepare your skin, keeping it healthy and clear. A skin care routine for healthy skin has 5 steps-cleanse, exfoliate, freshen, hydrate, and protect. Some cleansers on the market today sim-plify the process by offering a cleansing formula that cleanses, exfoliates, and protects. And don't forget the moisturizer! Even oily skin needs hy-dration, but with a light, oil-free formula that won't clog pores. These skin care steps, used morning and night, will leave your skin soft, with a healthy glow.

The fifth step in your skin care program is protec-tion-- a great foundation! Foundation is the No.1 product where quality matters, so invest in a good foundation. High quality foundation protects your pores from pollution, smoke, and dust, without clogging your pores, so it is an essential part of healthy day-time skin care. Cosmetically, founda-tion evens out skin tone for a clean, clear look. After applying the right foundation for your skin type, you'll want to "set" it with a light dusting of loose or pressed powder. As for the right shade for you, many Asian women have an olive skin tone, so using a foundation with an olive or yellow un-dertone is important. Never use foundations with pink undertones! And if you're between two col-ors, choose the lighter shade-- never go darker, as darker foundation will dull the look of your face.

M a k e u p ti psBy Michelle Vanlangengerg

To brighten your face, you'll want a cheek color that is natural and neutral-- perhaps a soft peachy-pink swept along the cheek bones and upon the apple

of your cheeks. Remember, the goal isn’t to shape your face by carving out cheek bones, but to brighten your facewith a beautiful color that com-plements your olive skin. Seek out colors that imi-tate your natural blush! Many Asian women have what are called “hooded” eyes- eye whose crease directly lines up with the lash line. Sometimes hooded eyes appear more closed or small than they truly are. To open up your eyes, you’ll want to highlight the entire eyelid, taking care not to over-highlight underneath your brow bone, which can make your eyes appear even smaller. You want to draw attention toward the eye, not away from it! After highlighting the eyelid with a not-too-light color, you’ll want to smooth a medium shade along the lash line and up just above the crease. With your eyes open, you should be able to see this color just above your lashes-it should be vis-ible! Use eyeliner that isn’t too heavy to accentu-ate the eyes, or use your medium shade of eye color to add a little drama. Finish with mascara that defines the lashes without adding weight or darkness to the eyes.

For lips, use neutral colors that complement your olive skin tone. Find a lip liner a bit darker than your lip color, and outline your lip line. If you have very thin lips, you may want to line just outside the line to create the illusion of fuller lips. If you have very full lips, you may want to line just in-side the line to minimize your lips. Finish with a bit of shine-a clear or complementary shade of lip gloss!

Don’t forget the details! Nicely shaped eye brows (not too thin, not too bushy) can really add sophistication to your look. Powder brow liner creates a soft and natural look. There you have it-your own customized, per-sonalized, gorgeous look to bring out the best of your Asian features!

Hats Off toSenaka De Silva BY : P . Prassanna

The leading fashion designer, choreographer, dancer and master artisan Senaka de Silva is a well known figure in the Sri Lankan show biz industry. If I say he’s a renowned fashion guru who produced top class models to the Sri Lankan catwalk most of our fashion industry icons would agree with me. He is well known for being in the Textile design profession for over 35 years in Sri Lanka, and has worked as a Consultant Designer to the Ministry of Textile Industry Development, the National Handicrafts Board of Sri Lanka, and the Sri Lanka Cooperative Tex-tile Union Limited. With his years of experience in the field, he has a clear picture of the local textiles and handicraft industry, and what needs to be done to take it forward.

Senaka how did your fashion career really kick off? When I was very small, as a child I showed much interest in art, jewelry, sculpture and textiles. When I was 14 I badly wanted to learn textile printing where I was inspired by Eana De Silva textiles. So, I went to Melbourne art class under Ms. Gora Abraham. I learnt batik designs at that young age while schooling. I discovered colors and excitement of designs at my class. From there I finished my school and went to art school for aesthetic studies at University of Kelaniya. I finished three years of learning and practicing paint-ing, drawing, sculpture, wood work, ceramic work etc. There I majored in ceramic design. Then simultane-ously I worked at Wipulatharmawardena for about six years. Over there I had the freedom of using my own designs, colors and everything I was inspired by, which eventually developed my textile skills. Then when I finished my studies I joined with Krishanthi Fernandopulley to start a small textile business. I named it “Fabric Craft”. Under that business we have formed a nice dress boutique in town named “Cress Boutique”. That’s how I entered the Sri Lankan fash-ion industry as a designer.

You started your career as a designer, and then what made you extend your areas of expertise into choreography side?Actually when Krishanthi Fernandopulley started do-ing the designs for our dress boutique, I had to use the textiles to turn them into real clothes. Then we had to showcase our collections using models and subse-quently models should be trained on how to present those designs. That led me to a totaly new career as a choreographer. The background knowledge and train-ing I had in classical ballet helped me to show models how to move, walk and pause on the ramp. Therefore, that was the beginning. Also, I had my own school of dance and modeling and I did a lot of Miss Sri Lanka pageants. Many beauty queens have been trained by me, which motivated me to start the contest called Model of the Year.

I organized and choreographed that contest for a good four to five years, which brought in prop-erly trained models into the Sri Lankan fashion industry.

Senaka, being a popular designer of Sri Lanka what were your inspirations for your remarkable designs?A most all of my shows are based on the theme Shades of Sri Lanka. My designs are inspired by Kandyan dancers, Ambalangoda mask danc-ers, tea pluckers of the hill country, the shades of jungle leaves and shades in general. I show-case our tradition and culture through these de-signs with appropriate music and using lovely models from our industry.

What do you most enjoy by designing clothes?I am really not a clothing seller and I don’t think of selling clothes to make money. So, I am not restricted to do my designs to please others. My clothes are more like an art and I have the freedom of using anything I want to design my clothes and continuously use creativity and in-novation in my designs. Therefore, that’s what I most enjoying in designing clothes.

What are the essential skills you think is needed for a designer?Well if you’re a fashion designer then surely, you should be able to cut and sew to construct your garment. If you fail in either, you cannot be considered a designer.

Why do you think your collections are unique?I make my own fabrics. I don’t buy materials from places to sew my clothes like others. I have the luxury of using my handmade textiles for the garments I construct.

Who is your favorite catwalk model?Shivani Vasagam and Pramila De Silva

If you get a chance to design clothes for one celebrity from any part of this world, who will you choose? Madonna. I think I will select her for her stage gimmicks.

137 September 2010 September 2010 138

What do you think is your major achieve-ment?In the early eighties, Sri Lanka hosted a confer-ence called “International conference of monu-ments and sights”, where the entire world’s top archeologists were invited to that conference. The cultural triangle of Sri Lanka gave me an oppor-tunity to do a show at that event. Therefore, I did a costume show called “Island Heritage” where I showed the cultural designs of Sri Lanka from Kuveni to the Kandyan period of designs. I had around 150 performers in my cast and the show was fabulous. I had a standing ovation from the audience of these archeologists. They said for the first time they understood our history after seeing my show. I consider that as the most remarkable achievement I had in my life.

We have quite a few famous designers in Sri Lanka. Who’s your favorite out of them? Michael Wijesuriya. For me he’s a fabulous designer who gets the perfect cut and fit of clothes. He’s exciting and continuously innovates his designs.

Well I think it’s Nushara Fernando and again Shivani Vasagam.

In your opinion, who do you think was the best Miss Sri Lanka ever?

You play a dual role as a designer and a choreographer, which is more challenging?I think choreographing. Designing clothes can never go wrong. If it goes wrong it can be cor-rected. But choreography is not like that because, you only plan the entire show from catwalk to music, lights to every single thing. If I take the responsibility of choreographing a show I should take the entire responsibility of the smooth run of the show. So, I think that’s more challenging and exciting than designing.

What are your future plans and dreams?Well my dream is to set up a craft village and in that I want to build a craft training centre to teach people to be craft entrepreneurs. I want to teach craftsmen to make things and to give the knowl-edge to weavers on the market needs-and tips on colour and design concepts which will help them to market their products abroad. I believe that will be able to make a living for themselves.

Finally, what are your word of wisdom for the young designers of Sri Lanka?Well, any new designer should be open for comments and suggestions. They have to look around the world and learn as much as possible. Basically they should be able to learn from any-one. Also, discovering something new and keep on innovating designs will make them survive in this industry.

If you get an offer to be the brand ambassador of any renowned brand of the world. Which brand would you choose?Roberto Cavalli, that’s my favorite.

If you get an opportunity to partner one Bol-lywood actor in the wide screen, who will you choose?Saif Ali Khan.

If you been given the authority to re-crown one of our former Miss. Sri Lanka’s who would that be?Rozanne Diasz

If you take our fashion industry there are pro-fessionally trained models and plenty of new comers entering the industry time to time. What’s the difference you see in these two categories?

The difference can be seen in every aspect of work. If you take anything relevant to fashion, it can be a photo shoot, a fashion show, or a TV commercial; the professionally trained models know the routine and process to follow unlike the newcomers. The beginners always needs in-structions from time to time and take such a long time to grasp things quickly. The problem here is that the newcomers thinks that they can get themselves trained after getting into the industry which, is wrong. The exact way is to get them trained under a professional first and then enter the fashion industry.

As a top model you have done fashion shows in both Sri Lanka and India. What are the dis-crepancies you see in both these industries?

Well the discrepancy is in every part of the things we both do. When it comes to Sri Lankan shows most of the time we do our own make up and take the necessary footwear and accessories which I consider unprofessional. But, when it comes to the shows in India every model is given a unique look starting from the attire to hair style, makeup, accessories and etc. Over there the ramp looks plain thus, it’s easy for the models to present the designs to the audience clearly.

Over here it’s not the same. The backdrops are filled with logos and the ramp is not plain. The main rea-son behind this is in Sri Lanka almost all the fashion shows are done to entertain people; more priority is given to the models rather than to the designs. But in India the fashion shows are mainly to showcase the designers’ collection so that the buyers can pur-chase decisions.

What’s your long term goal in this industry?

I want to start up a business in our industry itself. What I have noticed here is although we have many clothing shops people are afraid to visit these shops to experience the latest fashion trends because, they think it’s not affordable which is somewhat true. Only a limited amount of people get this shopping experi-ence. Therefore, I want to start up a clothing shop where, everyone can experience the latest fashion trends for an affordable price.

What’s your piece of advice for the young aspir-ing models who’s waiting to enter into the fash-ion industry?

The first thing is to get you trained under a profes-sional before entering the industry. Don’t think of entering the industry and then to get you trained, that never works. Furthermore, to respect the senior designers and models where, the new comers lack that. Also backstabbing is one of the major things in our industry. So, if they can work united with others without showing attitude they can do really well in the fashion industry.

September 2010 148

Hi Piumi, how did your modeling career really kick off?

From a young age, I had a liking towards fashion and modeling. Since I was schooling I never al-thought of getting into the industry. After school I applied for a contest called “Capri Queen” and I won that pageant. Then I went through a vigor-ous training programme under “Geraldeen Ban-daranayake” she coached me and I did many of her shows. Then in 2007 I took part in Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Universe and was placed second. That was the kickstarted it for me to step into what fashion industry as a professional model.

What makes you happy being in the fashion industry?

Well, when I see myself in any of the publica-tions and when I see my shows being telecast on TV I’m very happy. Also, I feel so relaxed when I do a fashion show or a photo shoot. Basically, I forget about all my personal things and I enjoy what I do.

What is the worst thing about being in the industry?

The way people see me is the worst part. There’s a general perception among people that models drink, smoke and go clubbing etc, which is not true. This general perception is not applicable to every individual in the industry. I feel very uncom-fortable when people think of me in that nature. This I consider the worst thing of being in the fashion industry.

What’s the difference you see when working with the mature designers and the new de-signers?

The mature designers know the process to follow when approaching a model for a show. But, the newcomers lack the professionalism in that way. When it comes to designs all of them have their unique, individual styles where, the new design-ers styles are more inspired or weighted towards international designs.

Who do you consider as the top model of our industry? When it comes to female models I think it’s Nadeeka Perera and Hemal Ranasinghe is the best amongst the male models.

The best cat walk model?Again it’s Nadeeka Perera

The best photogenic model in your opinionI have to give you the same answer. It’s Nadeeka Perera again.

After you get married, if your husband wants you to stop all what you are doing now, how would you react?Well,I have decided that after I get married I will surely stop modeling.

What would be your fairytale wedding?Oh my god, I love to have a fabulous beach wed-ding. But, not with beach clothes (she gives a big smile)

If you get a chance to model for one of the de-signers from any part of the world who would you select?Roberto Cavalli

If you have an option of dating a top model from our industry, who would that be?Well, I don’t think that I am interested in anyone (gives a big laugh)

Gamya Beauty andBrainsThe title of Miss Sri Lanka was the most prestigious honour that I’ve ever held. I was always determined to live up to what I be-lieve the title meant and defined. I believed that the title of Miss Sri Lanka is one of in-tegrity and competency, the titleholder has a duty to serve, a role to fulfil. The physical attributes to a Miss Sri Lanka are subjec-tive and limited in their value, but the depth and the substance knows no bounds.

The year I lived as a Miss Sri Lanka was ex-hilarating. It was meaningful in every sense of the word. I learned, I grew, I laughed and I cried, but through it all I gathered mo-mentum and strength I never knew existed within me. The Miss World experience was the defining moment of my life. I enjoyed every moment of it. We received the best of the best treatment, some of the most luxu-rious in recent years according to sources. Boy did we have a blast!

I made amazing friends, from every conti-nent, from every corner of the world. I can safely say I bonded with all the contestants. I made a conscious effort to spread the vir-tues of my island nation. The most excit-ing experience for me was dancing in front of millions of people while representing Sri Lanka. My most memorable moment of the contest was when the girls threw a surprise birthday party for me.

I achieved a number of things at Miss World. The biggest achievement was being chosen to perform a cultural dance at the finale of the pageant; only 6 countries received the honour of doing so. I also reached the final rounds for the categories of sports woman and beauty with a purpose. Sri Lanka was tipped to be in the semi finals and also a fa-vourite to win in all the online polls. I aimed to leave no stone unturned and to do my very best with the resources I had, and I did just that.

My biggest strength so far in this journey has been my mother. Without her selfless support and her belief in me, none of this would have happened. I also cannot begin to thank numerous friends, the many supporters from all walks of life who extended their support in various forms. I’m so grateful for each and every one of them.

I feel that my journey has just begun; I had a few goals when I started on this path. I believed in being a person who delivered on their word. I did not want to become distracted by all the glamour after winning the title. I have gone back to graduate in my MBA in my year of reign. I have done many charitable projects and I am happy that I had the opportunity to reach out. The most memorable moment outside of Miss World was my trip to Jaffna and my experience with the school children there who em-braced me so warmly and heartily. I wish to continue such community work as it has such a sense of fulfilment.

I’m looking forward to what the future has in store for me and I am also looking forward to being a guiding force for any future Miss Sri Lankas. It has been my honour to serve Sri Lanka and will continue to do so. 153 September 2010 September 2010 154

Each time I drive down Barnes place, one location tends to get my attention every single time. The many hoardings associated with this place make me read them over and over. SLIMMING TREATMENTS, WHITENING TREATMENTS, INSTANT FACE LIFTING, LASER TREATMENTS, ANTI AGING TREATMENTS… and the list goes on... wondering if it actually works, I made it a point to visit the place and experience it. Being a bit skeptical I entered the lavish institute not knowing what to expect but the moment I walked in I felt a sense of relaxation. The staff with smiling faces greed me and soon came the green tea. . Keen to know more about this Aesthetic Lounge I got into conversation with the man behind all this - Mr. Shyam Singh.

Firstly I asked him to give me a brief descrip-tion about the place. MOSH is an exclusive aesthetic lounge (skin care & body slimming clinic) that places empha-sis on offering a wide range of medically proven beauty treatments, weight management pro-grams and skin care products. At MOSH we are committed to providing treatments that utilize medical technologies to treat different imperfec-tions of the skin. If the client is seeking for a more relaxing and rejuvenating experience, our well trained and experienced staff can provide them with personalized spa treatments ranging from massages and body treatments in a peace-ful and elegant environment. At MOSH they also can get their skin analyzed by a professional consultant free-of-charge who will recommend the most suitable products and treatments. Our scientific approach and contributions has earned us the status of the country’s “most re-puted wellness brand” today and we aim to de-liver wellness for life.

Curious about all these treatments and prod-ucts he mentioned with so much of enthusi-asm I asked him to explain them to me.

SKIN WHITENINGA truly unique and effective skin whitening treat-ment using a range of exclusive Italian beauty products to reduce brown spots, age spots, hyper pigmentation, redness and uneven com-plexion. The active ingredients of these prod-ucts works in synergy to illuminate and unify your skin complexion while leaving it refreshed. We also combine other hi- tech devices to en-hance results and provide our client with fast and effective solutions.

PPX TREATMENT (LASER TREATMENT)Photo-pneumatic treatment, also known as PPx hair removal therapy is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Ad-ministration) approved therapy and is the very first painless treatment for permanent hair reduction, pig-mentation removal, spider veins treatment, acne treat-ment, brown spot removal, sun damaged skin healing and skin rejuvenation. It leaves no scars and does not require any kind of post-treatment. Unlike other laser treatment which is only for white and fair skinned people, PPx is suitable for all types of skins.

It works manually with the use of a medicated wide spectrum of broadband flashlights that are very pow-erful and suction therapy that expands pores. This expansion gives room for the light to travel to the re-quired areas to treat the problems. It’s a very short process as working on the whole of both legs would only take up to 20 minutes. Therefore hands and even face would definitely take much less time. Foreign clinics and most foreign doctors use the same PPx system since it is a lot more effective and powerful. It’s 5 times faster, 5 times safer, 5 times more effective than any other light based laser treat-ment.
