Dear friends,

St. Mary’s mission – to provide a superior educational experience for

girls that encourages and enables each student to achieve her individual

potential – is the starting point for every endeavor we undertake. It guides

each decision, purchase, and policy; it is our foundation, guiding principle,

and inspiration. We do not waver from it.

We saw that mission accomplished in myriad ways last year from

academic success and athletic prowess, to artistic expression and

community empowerment. We celebrated the countless victories and

triumphs together. Likewise, we challenged each other to work through

the inevitable difficulties and disappointments with kindness, respect, and civility.

Those who know St. Mary’s often say that the school “feels like family,” that it is like no other

community they know. We hear time and again that parents choose St. Mary’s because of an interaction or

acquaintance with a St. Mary’s student or alumna whose character defines her as a St. Mary’s girl. For me,

these stories are living examples of our mission at work in the world.

It is an honor to lead a school respected nationwide for its academic excellence and commitment to

the development of intellect and curiosity. I am equally grateful for the opportunity to lead a school that

values and fosters faith, respect, responsibility, and courage.

St. Mary’s thrived last year because you and 2,100 others invested in the mission, propelling the

Annual Fund beyond the $1 million mark for the third consecutive year. Your personal philanthropy

helped provide the resources that enabled us to nurture, teach, counsel, mentor, nurse, coach, protect,

direct, and encourage 817 girls and young women. I hope you enjoy the following stories of those who

believe in St. Mary’s and whose gifts bring it to life for every girl, every day.

Sincerely,

Albert L. Throckmorton

Head of School

Albert Throckmorton

ST. MARY’S COMMUNITY FUNDThe St. Mary’s Community Fund is a student-run organization founded in 1998 for the purpose of educating young women about the importance of philanthropy through hands-on fundraising, community service, and grant-making. Since 1998, the group has raised more than $430,000 and funded more than 40 local non-profit agencies that benefit Mid-South children.

Page 7: The mission of St. Mary’s Episcopal School Brown Bailey ’25 Fund for Financial Aid Established in 2000 by Hope Zanes Butterworth in memory ... Eric Sutcliffe Greenwood Scholarship

All three Waggoner sisters, Kathryn ’09, Susan ’11, and Elizabeth ’16,

were members of the St. Mary’s Community Fund (SMCF). Kathryn and Elizabeth led the way in grant making, while Susan was liaison to the Lower School. Although they led and worked in different ways, they agree that the SMCF changed their lives. Community service taught Kathryn to understand the challenges many Mid-South children face and that she had as much to learn from those she served as they did from her. Susan’s eyes opened to parts of her city that were broken, and she embraced the opportunity to make a difference. Elizabeth, who saw the SMCF through the lens of having two older sisters participate before her, learned that seeing problems in the community can be overwhelming, but she discovered that the inspiration she received from working alongside people who passionately serve others outweighed the challenges.

When asked if the SMCF experience plays a role in their adult lives or careers, they agree wholeheartedly. Kathryn, who graduated from Texas Christian University in 2013, shared, “SMCF helped me become a more confident leader, effective communicator, and passionate volunteer. Being involved in SMCF gave me opportunities to ask community leaders for donations and manage complex grant review processes — experiences to which few high school students have access.” Kathryn now works in the healthcare sector as a marketing specialist with

Medtronic. Susan, who graduated from Auburn University in 2015, agrees her involvement in the SMCF taught her valuable leadership and communication skills, while also showing her the importance of serving her community. Memphis is now her home, and she works at FedEx Freight as a communications specialist. She enjoys volunteering with the youth group at St. Louis Catholic Church. Elizabeth, a sophomore at Washington University, values the leadership, collaboration, and communication skills she developed in the SMCF. She said that, “Just in my first few months of college, I saw how my time spent on the SMCF afforded me the unusual opportunity to assume responsibilities that few high school students are offered.”

Each sister recalled the most important thing she learned from the SMCF. For Kathryn, who believes that everyone can and should be a philanthropist, it is the fact that there

are so many ways, big and small, to give back, and everyone has something to give. Susan’s take-away is the up-close view of the effect philanthropy and volunteering have on people. “Seeing the joy in the children’s eyes when we played with them or read to them is what inspired me to continue giving back.” Elizabeth learned the importance of each individual member’s efforts and contributions to the whole, and the importance of their collaboration in the process of reaching solutions to big problems. “More than anything,” she recalls, “the SMCF instilled in me a life-long passion for philanthropy in any capacity.”

Ginger Hicks Smith ’73 began her St. Mary’s journey in 1960, and that journey continued

through her graduation in 1973. “So many of my St. Mary’s memories revolve around time spent in the sanctuary of the Church of the Holy Communion — attending Chapel every day with a community of friends and faculty, looking up to the older girls as they made chapel announcements and graduated in their long white dresses, and then becoming one of those older girls. Being at St. Mary’s from Kindergarten through the twelfth grade and having faith intertwined into practically every aspect of that experience had a profound influence on my life.”

One especially meaningful St. Mary’s moment for Smith occurred on her graduation day when she gave the valedictory address and received the Gold Cross Award along with her close friend Ellen Clark Moore. “That remains one of the greatest surprises and highest honors of my life.”

An important lesson Smith learned at St. Mary’s was to approach hard work without intimidation. “So often we found ourselves facing a mountain of homework or confronting a challenging project. We just had to plunge in and deal with it. Unbeknownst to us at the time, we were learning about setting priorities, managing time and resources, and overseeing projects. The confidence I gained through that process has stood me in good stead in both professional and personal pursuits.”

Smith began giving back to St. Mary’s soon after she graduated and has not missed a year since. “My early gifts were not large.

You may think that a small gift will not make a difference, but a gift, whatever its size, combined with many others, does indeed make a difference. Investing in outstanding education for girls seems especially important at this point in the history of our country and the world. The need for strong, educated female leaders and influencers has never been greater.”

As the years passed, Smith increased her investment to St. Mary’s, but her decision to include the school in her estate plans was the ultimate testament of her devotion and loyalty to her alma mater. As a member of the Margaret R. Hyde Society, she helps secure the future of the school she loves.

After majoring in history at Emory University, Smith began working in the library there and earned a master’s degree in library and information science that helped launch her thirty-eight year career.

“Since my retirement, I have balanced volunteer work and personal pursuits, while also enjoying the opportunity to set more of my own priorities and be more in charge of my own schedule. I volunteer for my church, my sorority, Delta Delta Delta, and its foundation. Through that connection, I serve as a member of the board of directors for the North American Interfraternity Conference Foundation. I am also enjoying three favorite activities: reading, needlepointing, and spending time with family and friends.”

St. Mary’s is grateful beyond measure for Ginger Hicks Smith’s friendship, loyalty, and leadership.

Members of the Margaret R. Hyde Society demonstrate extraordinary devotion to St. Mary’s by securing a future gift to the school through their estate plans.

Margaret Ruffin “Teter” Hyde, for whom the Margaret R. Hyde society is named, dedicated herself to causes in which she believed, and St. Mary’s was one of them. A former Trustee of the school, Hyde led the way in a 1980s capital fundraising drive that enabled the construction of a new elementary building on the Moss Hall property, a building which school leaders at the time were honored to name The Margaret R. Hyde Activity Center. The school received its first sizable planned gift through Hyde’s estate following her death in 1995.

The following alumnae and friends of St. Mary’s have planned future gifts for the school through their bequests and other estate plans.

Please contact Kirk H. McClintock at 901-537-1423 or [email protected] to discuss how you can support St. Mary’s future as a member of the Margaret R. Hyde Society.

Anna Morten ’11 is a 15-year St. Mary’s lifer who hails from a long line of St. Mary’s women. Her

mother, Lisa Morrow Morten, graduated in 1976, her aunt Brooke Morrow in 1974, and her sister, Meredith, in 2007. Anna treasures her memories from St. Mary’s and credits the school with helping her develop into the person she is today, from her strong sense of ethics and morality, her desire to give back and serve her community, to her communication and writing skills. “I don’t think there is a single aspect of my life that wasn’t influenced by St. Mary’s in some way. The lessons I learned and the people I met there through my 15 years most definitely shaped who I am today.”

While a student, Anna was an active member of the St. Mary’s Community Fund, a student-run grant making, community service, and fundraising organization whose mission is to help children in the Mid-South. She refers to that experience as one of the most rewarding opportunities of many at St. Mary’s, and it led her to continue developing her philanthropic interests while at Wake Forest University, from which she graduated in 2015, and today as a young working adult.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve known it’s important to support organizations in which I believe. Growing up, I saw my parents, grandparents, and aunt give back to St. Mary’s, so its importance has always been clear to me. I now make philanthropic giving, primarily to St. Mary’s, Wake Forest, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a yearly habit.”

Anna began giving back to St. Mary’s immediately upon her graduation, and

encouraged her classmates to follow her lead as an Annual Fund Class Agent, a position she held more than once. “St. Mary’s was such a meaningful place for me throughout my 15 years there. I had no hesitation about donating because I wanted to ensure that other girls could have the same wonderful experience that I did. I give out of gratitude and in appreciation for the opportunities I had access to that might not have

been available at another school— opportunities that enabled me to discover my individual potential and experiences that opened my eyes to new things that are becoming lifelong habits and interests.”

Anna is a research manager in Atlanta where she works at a marketing research firm, a challenging and rewarding career in which she sees much opportunity and room for growth.

Lyle and Ted Davis place a high premium on education. Ted, who attended Germantown Academy in Philadelphia, is grateful to the donors who supported his school’s Annual Fund and endowment making it possible for him and his three siblings to attend the

school. “Germantown Academy instilled the skills that prepared me for college and graduate studies. I want to pay that forward at St. Mary’s.”

Ted, President and CEO of Active Implants, an entrepreneurial sports medicine company, describes himself as, “A biomedical engineer who thought he was going to medical school, got distracted and ended up in business school (Northwestern University).” He spent ten years in the life sciences venture capital field then transitioned into management at Wright Medical & MicroPort Orthopedics.

Lyle was born in Memphis and raised in Mississippi and Virginia, where she completed high school at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond. She is a graduate of Vanderbilt University (Ted’s alma mater, too), the University of Virginia where she received her M.Ed., and Northwestern University

where she earned her Ph.D. in Communication Disorders. She is the Director of Education at Bodine School.

The Davises, who moved to Memphis in 2004, immediately became active in the St. Mary’s community after enrolling their oldest daughter Mason in Pre-K; they also became regular Annual Fund donors. Ted, a volunteer solicitor, acknowledges that the Annual Fund is vital to the

school’s financial base, providing 6% of the annual budget. He wants more parents to know and understand that, “Only about 85% of the cost of each student’s education is covered by tuition — the Annual Fund makes up most of the difference.”

St. Mary’s is the right school for both Davis daughters, Mason, a sophomore, and Carrington, an 8th grader. “Our girls are very different, yet St. Mary’s meets each where she is and challenges them in different ways. Mason is a workhorse, while Carrington’s lighthearted nature sometimes masks her drive and ambition. Their teachers engender a passion for learning in each of them and inspire them to want to make our world a better place.” The Davises also have a son, Tucker, who attends PDS.

Although academics take precedence in the Davis household, athletics comes in a close second for this active couple who met on a mountain biking excursion. Both were avid lacrosse players growing up and played lacrosse and club soccer into adulthood. They love the outdoors and enjoy most sports, especially running, biking, snow skiing, golf, tennis, and paddle boarding. It is not surprising that one of their most memorable St. Mary’s moments involves sports. “Seeing Carrington assist Mason for the game winning goal against Hutchison’s Middle School lacrosse team two years ago was a highlight! Sharing that experience with them and their teammates was incredible.”

The words that best define St. Mary’s for them — enriching, inspiring, and fearless.

Mary and Paul Stumb, lifelong Nashvillians, became St. Mary’s grandparents

in 2010 when their granddaughters Leila ’17, Mary ’20, and Grace Jones ’23 enrolled in seventh grade, second, and Kindergarten. Susan Jones, the Stumb’s daughter, and her husband Will, had recently moved to Memphis. Their school selection did not surprise the Stumbs, as revered former St. Mary’s Head of School Nathaniel C. Hughes was a relative. It is fitting that the Stumbs are now members of the Nathaniel C. Hughes Society of donors who give between $1,000 and $4,000 annually.

The Joneses immediately became active participants in the St. Mary’s community. Susan substituted in the Lower School regularly and served on the Parents Association, becoming president in 2014-15, while Will joined the Board of Trustees in 2012.

The Stumbs, who both graduated from Vanderbilt University (and where Paul, a retired internist, received his M.D.), were delighted that their Memphis granddaughters landed in an excellent school that so quickly became home for their family. Mary and Paul made their inaugural gift to the Annual Fund in their first year as St. Mary’s grandparents, and they have repeated that practice each year since.

Mary, a former speech and hearing consultant, explained that giving regularly was an easy decision. “St Mary’s gives our girls a fine academic education, outstanding athletic opportunities, and helps instill in them a sense of honor, the desire to serve others, and the opportunity to know and respect girls of different faiths, backgrounds, and beliefs. It allows the girls to learn and grow through both failure and success, and each girl is encouraged to develop her own

interests, abilities, and talents.”Philanthropy is important to the

Stumbs, and they have passed that legacy to the next generations. “Our three children, their spouses, and our 15 grandchildren all contribute their dollars, time, and efforts to worthwhile projects. Education is certainly high on our own list of philanthropies, as is our church and other outreach ministries. We believe the greatest gifts we can give our children and grands are faith, caring, and education. We hope that our giving to St Mary’s encourages them to do the same both now and in the future. We are truly grateful for this special school, and our gifts come with much appreciation and gratitude.”

The Stumbs make their philanthropic gifts through an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) in order to take advantage of substantial tax benefits for which they are eligible under sec. 408(d)(8) of the federal tax code. That section permits qualifying charitable contributions made directly from an IRA to a charitable organization on or after the donor reaches 70 1/2 years of age to be excluded from gross income, creating a powerful incentive for charitable giving. Please check with your financial advisor or accountant to see if you, too, can benefit from giving as the Stumbs have, through an IRA.

In 1997, Dorothy and Herb Wells chose St. Mary’s for their daughter Alexis (and three years later, her sister Meredith), and in the twenty years since, they have been an integral part of the St. Mary’s community. They have been

Parent Association volunteers, Annual Fund grade captains, and Dorothy served as a Trustee from 2006 until 2013. Alexis and Meredith played sports at St. Mary’s, and Herb was frequently seen with his camera on the sidelines of soccer and basketball games, taking great shots of his girls and their teammates.

From the beginning, Dorothy and Herb believed St. Mary’s was the right choice for their daughters, but, as Dorothy says, “We never expected to be as invested in a school as we have been in St. Mary’s. The decision to support the school throughout these years has been an easy one. We’ve seen the mission of St. Mary’s lived out in the commitment of faculty and administration, and we’ve seen students thrive in an environment that supports their growth in body, mind and spirit — and helps them find their place in the world. Both Alexis and Meredith are St. Mary’s lifers who have gone on to realize their dreams in great colleges (and now in career and graduate school, for Alexis). We are tremendously grateful for the great foundation that St. Mary’s has given them both.”

St. Mary’s is grateful to the Wells family for their continued support, interest, and participation in the life of our community.

G lory be to God for dappled things begins the Jesuit priest and poet Gerard Manley Hopkins in his magnificent

poem “Pied Beauty.” Hopkins lauds the beauty in variety and praises God for the dappled diversity in the natural world – the fickle and the freckled, the swift and the slow – “dappled things” are vital to the artistry of creation and its workings. But more, the poet reminds his reader that each trade and job of man requires its specific “gear and tackle and trim,” and the vestments and accouterments of a profession contain great meaning, or should.

The Reverend Reynolds Smith Cheney II, Rector of the Church of the Holy Communion for twenty years, was a man who wore his vestments well – with amazing grace.

On July 10, 2017, Fr. Cheney died peacefully at his home. His career as an Episcopal priest began in Mississippi, in towns with names like Kosciusko and Vaiden and Okolona. My parents’ people come from around these same parts. I would like to think they might have met a youthful Fr. Cheney in their spiritual wanderings, and in his. Old primitive Baptists with little education meeting the young Episcopal priest with a great one – a conversation I would have liked to have heard, for all its differences. However it would have gone, I know it would have been clothed in knowledge, draped in love, and enveloped in kindness.

Reynolds Cheney wore his vestments well. Former Head of School Tom Southard

worked with Fr. Cheney for 13 years and remembers these years with enormous fondness and gratitude. Southard speaks of the church and school working in collaboration during both their tenures, moving through difficult matters – such things as shared space and different schedules and raising money – quite well and with mutual affection for the betterment of both institutions.

Southard and Cheney traveled through personal grief together in the loss of both of their wives, and the near loss of Southard’s daughter to a brain tumor. “In each case,” Southard says, “Reynolds and I weathered these tremendous challenges through our mutually

supportive, trusting, respectful, and time-tested relationship.” Southard goes on to say, “Personally, Reynolds enabled the greatest thirteen years of my professional life – none better.”

Reynolds Cheney wore his vestments well. The St. Mary’s community remembers Fr. Cheney in part

because of his Friday Chapel talks and his Black Friday Chapel addresses. Reynolds would walk up and down the aisle of the church in full robes every Friday, looking into the eyes of young Turkeys, telling his stories and funny anecdotes. Mary Lacy Bell ’88 remembers a story of the seniors in chapel the Friday after the annual Father-Daughter dance. The tradition is that seniors can

wear pajamas to school the day after the dance, so girls sat pj-clad in the pews while Senior-Dad-Father-Cheney walked the aisle vestment-clad to deliver his address. Until the end of his message, when he stood on the chancel and took off his robes and, to the delight of the senior class, was dressed proudly in his own set of flannel pajamas. One might wonder if his daughter – Ruth Cheney Patton ’87 – found this as hilarious as the rest of the Chapel did. Fr. Cheney loved St. Mary’s school well.

Reynolds Cheney was a jovial giant of a man who wore his vestments (and his pajamas) well.

Chaplain Katherine Bush ’93 grew up in the Chapel pews of St. Mary’s and in the church pews of Holy Communion. “Reynolds was a fixture in my family and my faith,” she says. He was there at the death of her grandmother and preacher to her and her soon-to-be husband on the morning of their wedding. “In many outside ways, we were as different as two could be,” Katherine says. “A young girl and an imposing middle-aged man, but when I came to him years later as an adult voicing an early and then uncertain call to ministry, he affirmed and encouraged and advised and, ultimately, welcomed me into that shared priesthood.”

Reynolds Cheney also taught people how to wear their vestments well.

In the funeral homily for Reynolds Cheney, Rector of the Church of the Holy Communion the Reverend Sandy Webb summarizes the life of Fr. Cheney far better than I can. Webb says, “Reynolds used to say that the Church should live at the ‘cutting middle’ – not out on the extremes where politicians live, but in the middle, where the people are. Yet, at the same time, he also knew when the Church needed to claim her prophetic voice: On civil rights, on the leadership of women, on the dignity of people with physical disabilities, Reynolds was unwilling to compromise. God’s feast will be set for all people, Isaiah says, not just a few.”

Reynolds was a churchman of the finest variety, says Webb, and there will not be another like him.

I have been told that Reynolds had a real gift for remembering everyone he ever met and calling them all by name. I imagine he’s enjoying this gift as he walks in his new garments on streets of purest gold. Glory be to God for dappled things, and glory be to God for the life of Reynolds Cheney.

He wore his vestments well.
