St. Andrew’s Adult Education Team is hosting a monthly series of Last Sunday of the Month Netflix Documentary Screenings at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of our new building at 140 Gathering Place Lane in Iowa City. Popcorn and beverages will be provided. (The descriptions below come from author and journalist Warren Cole Smith at http://bit.ly/2CXWK0r.)

February 25 “Detropia”: Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady brought us this 2012 dystopian tale of a hollowed-out Detroit. It won a bunch of awards, and it does a great job of illustrating the brokenness of Detroit at a moment in time, specifically the aftermath of the 2008-2009 financial crisis. What “Detropia” doesn’t show is how, even while the filmmakers were there, church leaders and social entrepreneurs were working to bring Detroit back. It is not fully back today, but what has happened in the five years since “Detropia” released is the “real” story of that city.

March 25: “13th”: Director Ava DuVernay, who is currently helming the upcoming “A Wrinkle in Time film,” first made waves with this startling documentary on the American prison systems. Known for her vocal approach on the subjects of race and equality, DuVernay comes at her viewers full-force, comparing modern incarceration to early slavery. Viewers are challenged to think critically on questions of truth and justice, while receiving an inside look at the legislation which governs American prisons. The film is not for the faint of heart, but is nonetheless a story which needs telling.

April 29: “Jesus Camp”: If you are a Christian, especially if you ever went to a church camp, you will find this documentary by turns deeply frustrating, deeply yet

vaguely familiar. The Jesus Camp of this documentary is not — repeat, not — representative of many of the great Christian camps out there, but neither is it unique. Christians should see this documentary, if for no other reason than to know what the ‘other side’ thinks of us.”

Pie for a Pint Every unit we donate at our blood drive can help save up to three lives. Each recipient of that blood donation has his or her own story. He or she could be an accident or trauma victim, cancer patient, a mother giving birth, a premature baby, a transplant recipient or surgical candidate. Our impact goes beyond that patient – it is multiplied by the impact it has on that person’s loved ones who are thankful for the unit we donated.

The DeGowin Blood Center could not meet patient needs and touch all of those lives if it were not for groups like ours.

Our upcoming blood drive collection goal on March 4 is 30 pints. Think about all of the lives we can touch by meeting our goal. A typical donation takes less than one hour. If you can’t give, you can still help by providing a pie!! Sign-up sheets for both donations

and pies are in the Atrium.

A new class will begin this Sunday, February 18 from 9:45-10:45 am on Christian Caregiving in Room 103. Over ten sessions we will cover five topics in two week sequences to increase understanding and build skills that will enable us to better understand how our faith helps us care for ourselves and others in a distinctively Christian way. This week’s session will focus on development of understanding about setting boundaries, assertiveness and trust building. Next week on February 25, we will work on practicing those skills. Ted Potter and Mary Beth Ross will facilitate using the book Christian Caregiving-a Way of Life by Dr. Kenneth Haughk. Books will be loaned to participants for the length of the course, which will run up until May 6. Signups and books are available on the Elliott table in the church office. If you are interested in attending or have any questions, please email or call Mary Beth Ross at 319/338.0082 or [email protected]
