MSG Election...

Take The Voting AdvantageMercyhurst; Student Government elections will be taking

place next Wednesday, March 30 and Thursday, March 31.For the first time in over four years the 1983-84 student

government officer core will be all new students holding each

office.Under this condition, it is critical that 'Hurst students are

aware of the candidates for office, as well as their platforms.Richard L anzillo, current president of MSG stated in an inter-view once that, 'There shouldn't be any problems in studentgovernment next year. In fact, at this point some new bloodmay be good." This statement is so true, as change is in-evitable. If students complain about the candidates for office, they can only blame themselves. Everyone had the freedom o fchoice to run in the election.

The five officer positions for the election are president, vicepresident, treasurer, secretary and Student Activities Com-mittee (SAC) chairperson. A total of 13 students are runningin the election next week. T he candidate's letters of intent ex-plaining their views and opinions are expressed in this week'sMERCIAD. , t r i£ i

The five students elected to office will represent the Mer-

cyhurst student body in many facets. Student government of-ficers and representatives in the past have made decisions con-cerning the yearly paid student activity fee, lengthening ofvisitation hours in dormitories, remodeling of the StudentUnion, to the decision of keeping the Mercyhurst Praeteritayearbook. The list of MSG responsibilities; decisions, andhard effort that has been put forth for Mercyhurst Collegeand the students is endless.

Voters and individuals should'be aware of the right tochoose and elect the candidates of your choice. The studentgovernment election "is not a popularity contest.-It is of ut-most importance to keep in mind leadership skills, motivationlevels, experience, talent and dedication when making officerselections.

An open forum and debate among candidates took placeon Wednesday, March 23 at 3:00 p.m. in 114 Zurn. Thisforum allowed Mercyhurst students, government represen-

tatives, faculty, and even administration if they wished, toask questions to the candidates who are seeking office. Theforum and debate allowed students to better understand thebeliefs, opinions and views of the contenders for office. Can-didates also gave campaign speeches on Wednesday, March23 and Thursday, March 24 at 5:00 p.m. in the cafeteria forthe benefit of students.

It is imperative that people vo te and select their candidatescarefully, for these officers who are elected will be makingdecisions that affect students and Mercyhurst College.

Recognize and take advantage of the voting opportunity.Make the decision as to the best officer core in MSG for1983*84 to work towards making improvements for you, thestudents at Mercyhurst C ollege. 1 ]

Late PaymentaSlap The Face J

Dear Editor, II'm not usually one to com-

plain, but what I experiencedwhile trying to pay my tuition billfor spring term was just not whatI expected.

First of all, I know that I'm notthe only one who feels like thisbecause I'm not the only personwho has been slapped with a $25late fee on payment of my springbill. It's ridiculous to get chargedfor giving money. When you handover $1,250 and then are informedthat you owe $25 more because

you're two days late with paymentseems as rude as a slap in the face.College is expensive enoughwithout these little fees.

Now let me explain, I unders-tand that a date has to be set forbills to be paid or they wouldnever get paid, but the businessoffice wouldn't even give anyonethe chance to explain.

I Some bills arrived laple's houses,: some stuchose to bring their chereturn for spring termtheless, the late chaenforced.

In my case, as many otion has been paid in fu

time for the last three ythe penalty received forjust didn't seem fair.

Tuition bills are a toject for everyone whether you're the onpayment or receiving ittry to be a little more cowe're all trying to work

The views expressed in all the* followingletters are the opinion of,the individualcandidates.

Bryan Doherty

To the Mercyhurst Community,My name is Bryan Doherty and

I am running for the office J ofMSG president.U am presently asophomore majoring in CriminalJustice and History. I ifeel that Iam qualified for the post on ofpresident due to mypast efforts instudent government as a represen-

tative. The most important ofthese being my Judicial I BoardProposal. I authored and lobbiedthrough student government thecreation of a student dominatedboard that would hear the appealsof alleged disciplinary violations. The most important feature ofthis board is providing fairness indiscipline proceedings through theidea of a "jury of one's peers."

Another^proposal that I spon-sored this year was the book lendproposal. I was jnot the firstrepresentative in student govern-ment to recognize the problem ofhigh book costs. However, Iwasone of the first to try $and dosomething about it. And, ifelected, I will try as many alter-nate solutions as possible to lowerthe Ibook cost burden for usstudents.

So much for the past and thepresent. During the 1983-84school year, student governmentwill be faced with some momen-tous issues that will affect th e col-lege as a whole. The most impor-tant of these, to the student, willbe the question of whether the col-lege will Iremain tri-semester orchange to t the two semestersystem. I believe that this issue istoo big for the student govern-ment to handle alone. After all, whatever student government

decides will be seen as the opinionof all the students. For this ques-tion I believe we should follow th eidea of direct representation. Stu-dent government should appoint acommittee that would expose thepros and the cons of both systemsand publish its findings for thestudents. Then, after the studentshad ̂ an opportunity to examinethe issue, student government

would!hold a .referendum wherestudents can choose the systemthey want. Finally,|based ion theoutcome of the referendum, I, aspresident, would strive to have thesystem chosen by the studentsadopted by the college, -t ?

Also, in the area of activities, Iintend to bring the first big namebandfto perform at the college. The choice of the band will bebased upon a student question-naire and the ability to draw theoutside community. Finally I feelthat an effective student govern-ment is essential to the whole Mer-cyhurst Community; If elected, Iwill try to make next year'sgovernment* the most effectiveever. it

Thank You.

Meet Jean Moniewski. I am asophomore, history-accountingmajor and running for MSGPresident. What I want for stu-dent government is two-fold. Iwant to establish solid departm entlinks between the departments, the representatives, and govern-

I want more students involvin Mercyhurst College. We arecollege, we should be an actipart of it. I want also to keep Mcyhurst known to the 'Ercommunity. >

David RobinsonTO the Mercyhurst Students,

My name is David Robinson, and 1 am requesting your supportin the upcoming MSG presidentialelection. I am sincere in my desireto commit myself to the faithfulexecution of this office, and Ibelieve that my record of activeinvolvement in the MercyhurstCommunity for the last two yearswell qualifies me for this position.

In the time I have been at Mer-

cyhurst I have been actively in-volved in many areas - studentgovernment, the Campus LifeComm., Campus Ministry, theFree Film Series, the Annual FoodI Drive, various clubs and organiza-tions, and many social activities. In all of these functions I havetried to play a constructive role inthe numerous organizational and

exceptional aspects.Specifically in my role

political science representative toMSG, I have served on theGovernment Relations Committeeand recently represented Mer-

cyhurst at the American StudentsAssociation Conference inWashington, D.C. At the conven-tion I began work to establishMercyhurst College as a leaderamong small private colleges. I in-tend to pursue this next year withthe goal of building a coalition ofarea colleges to fight against Con-gressional cuts in educational aid. |

In the Senate, I am currentlyStudent-at-Large on the CampusLife Committee. Since the com-mittee's scope extends over allareas of non-academic life, I haveestablished a broad understandingOf what needs to be done, andmore importantly, how to do it.At the same time I have at alltimes been primarily concernedwith student rights and inputregarding the decisions and ac-tions of the administration.

MSO is a very efficient and ac-tive organization. One need onlylook around to see the many cam-pus improvements initiated byMSG In recent years. Such d edica-tion and commitment on the partof the representatives and

the dorms and apartments, andthe lack of black educators). Asvice-president I would try to cor-rect these and other shortcomings.I am a trusting, hard-working per-son who gets things done. I feelthat by electing me as your vice-president, you will be putting aresponsible person in that office.Your vote will 'be greatly ap-preciated and not wasted.

Respectfully you rs,David Alexander.

campaign on. I, Brent Scarpo, dopromise to listen to problems andconcerns of all groups on campus.

What I'm saying is that I don'tcare if you're black, a footballplayer, a commuter or whatevertype of group you may belong to,for I will be concerned for all ofyou. jj ft >. S *1

As a junior, English/Com-minications major, I have seenMercyhurst College break up intomany groups which have helpedthe college both academically andsocially. j |

I'm concerned about the needsand wants of these groups, andwhether or not they are \ being

fu l f i l led.You ... the football player,

"Are you happy with what theschool provides you?" Howabout you ... Baldwin Hall girls,"Are you satisfied with the runn-ing of our college?"

If the answers to these ques-tions are no, then I strongly urgeyou as well as all other groups toelect myself, Brent Scarpo into theoffice of vice president. I

If you do so, I can assure youthat I will recognize, listen to, andhelp all groups at Mercyhurst inevery way that is and is not at mydisposal.

Thank you,Brent Scarpo.

If elected, I, Patrick Callahan, will share the stereotype that mostpeople have of what a secretarydoes. Taking notes, typingminutes and recording the roll atmeetings are all1" very importantduties in the job of beingsecretary. But, I believe they areonly a small part of what thesecretary should do.

If elected, I will do more thanthat. Planning new* activities forthe Mercyhurst Community, br-inging more of the students ideasinto government, are all only afew of the many things I believe Ican do as secretary.

I believe that there is no limit towhat a person can do, if the willand the desire are there. I sincere-ly mean it when I say that theMercyhurst Community cancount on me to give full effort inmy duties a s secretary.

I recognize that my full effortwill be needed in order to continue

Thank you for considering me,Patrick Callahan.

I'm Sue Bennett, a sophomorepsychology major, and I'm look-ing for a position in MSG - name-ly secretary. But, WHAT ARE

YOU LOOKING FOR? Are youlooking for someone organizedand hard-working? Are you look-ing for someone who is dedicatedto getting the job done as best aspossible? Are you looking for aperson with responsibility, leader-ship qualities, and a knack for

working with others, someowho is concerned and willing listen to the needs of the studebody? If not, don't vote for m

I feel that I embody thequalities and would like to hathe opportunity to utilize themb e t t e r i n g g o v e r n m e n t Mercyhurst. ;

I feel student involvement

very important. One way of gting greater involvement is to kthe students informed. Mastudents have no idea what MSG meeting is about, and thbecome; disinterested. In pticular, the commuters, who haone representative in governmeand the adult college studenwho have no representatishould be kept better informedfeel, as secretary, part of my jwould j be to keep all studeaware of the happenings withthe school.

Soccer Team PreparesFor Indoor Season

k £ By Corky Prem.jThe Mercy hurst Soccer Team ,

led by the coaching oflCeesSchmidt and Burley Grimes is ex-pected to begin their;- indoorseason at "the end of this month. They have entered into the Penn-Briar League and expect to play afull twenty game schedule.

Most of the team is*keepingbusy with winter workouts. All ofthe members work ou t at theGlen wood Y , but not as on e unit.

I talked with several of theplayers and most of them * thinkthat the general attitude of the

team is good. They all expect aterrific season in the fall and areanxiously awaiting the indoorseason.

I also had the chance to talk toone of the three seniors on theteam, Eddie Marsharka. He saidthat the previous season was atremendous success, and that the

indoor season will also go as well.He believes that the indoor train-ing will help some of the freshmenwith their basic controlling skills.

Marsharka, a native of Erie, says he plans to keep an eye on theprogress of the team and feels thatthere is a great potential for nextyear.

As far as recruiting goes, therehas been some rumor of a possibleforeign student or two playing forthe 'Hurst next year, but nothinghas been confirmed as yet. '*

Both coaches look forward witha positive attitude for the upcom-

ing season, and urge fans to comeout and root on the '83 indoorteam.
