Mary Jo Leddy, founder ofNe wCatholic Times and director ofRomero House in Toronto willgive the Mercyhurst OscarRomero Lecture titled, "A ManWho Meant What He Said."The Romero House is a placefor refugees, many of them fromEl Salvador.Oscar Romero, a bishop murdered at the altar in that war-torncountry, proclaimed theCatholicChurch as a church for the poorand was afierceadvocate for social justice.Leddy works to shatter the stereotypesof refugees, giving themfaces in her many talks throughout North America and in herregular columns for the TorontoStar. I iShe is the author of three books,Reweaving Religious Life, Sayto the Darkness We Beg to Differ and M emories ofWar, Promises of Peace. She was awarded

the 1983 Ida Nudel HumanRightsAward and several press awards, including best editorial, best newsstory and best theological reflection. In 1993, she was presentedwith theiOntario CitizenshipAward.*Social activism was a way oflife for her family. She tells astory of a newly-wed physicianand his wife, a registered nurse, who set out for Europe at theoutbreak o f World Warll "to makea contribution to the wareffort -to prevent the government ofHitler and Mussolini from destroying democracy for all time."She was their first-born.

Catholicism w as "part of the airwe breathed," Leddy wrote, andit was a Catholicism rooted insocial justice and community. As a student of philosophy, shewas obsessed with bringing thecontemplative life and the active

life together. She found a companion in that quest in writings byI Hanna Arendt, a German Jewishphilosopher and the subject ofLeddy's doctoral dissertation.Arendt blamed the success ofNazism onthe silence of the populace. In explainingArendt's position, Leddy wrote, "All theseChristians, good Christians, allthe academics, all the politicalpeople had abandoned the process of public life. .. S he arguedthat the whole obligation o f public life, and not just the obligationbut the feeling mat we are moatfolly human is achieved whenweare acting in public for the sake ofthe public good."In her own p ublic life, Leddyconsistently 1 tempers thoughtswith deeds, voic e with action. On Monday, the Mercyhurstcommunity will have the opportunity to hear that voice.

Got the P MJason UleryMerciad ColumnistTime for the latest inMerciadmusic rcviews, with a new flavor. I'm that kid in the corner,or, as Pm knownby my friends,Funky. This week's reviews:Mike Watt and Blues Explosion. First up we have MikeWattfonncrly of the Minute-men and FIREHOUSE, with his s olo effort Ball-Hog or Tugboat? It is a solo album in the broadest sense o f the word as he is joined bymany of today's hottest musicians. Among the more notables are:Mike D. and Adam Horowitz of the Beastie I Iys, Henry Rollins,Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth,

Evan Dando of the L emonhcads, Stephen Perkins of Pornofor hePyros, Frank Black, Flea, Chris and Curt Kirkwood of theMeatpuppets, and Dave Grohl,Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear, formerly of N irvana.Watt is known for his ability to diversify h is musical styles, andhe even makes vocalists Edward Vedder and Dave Pirner soundgood. He transcends todays' level of music going from bluesyselections such as aBig Train" and "Drove Up From Pedro" to there hardcore "Tuff Gnarl" and the Rollins-fronted "Sexual Mill-

    ;a

tary Dynamics" to the jazzy "E-Ticket Ride" along with the funk-drenched "Coincidence is. Either Hit or Miss," both!featuringmembers of the Beastie Boys. He also does an excellent cover ofGeorge Clinton's "Maggot Brain". Are you ready to go 17 roundswith Mike Watt? = U *Next is the Jon Spencer Blues Exp losion with their third album,Orange. Either no one has heard of this or everyone lacks the abilityto recognize good music I mean, how am I supposed to know?Maybe you sit around and listen to Rick Springfield all day.Anyway, this is a great album from New York's art-core sceneand Spencer does a great Elvis Presley impersonation. Bass wouldjust get in the way of this one. Vocalist and guitarist Spencer, a longwith guitarist Judah Baver and drunner Russell Smins combineblues (duh) with jazzy riffs, galaetic sound effects, and screechinghorns. A grea t underground album with tracks such as"Bellbottoms,""Sweat," "Blues X Man," "Full Grown," and "Flavor," featuringBeck.Everybody should go check these two albums out immediately,if not sooner. They both feature old punk rockers who have gone onto redefine our generation's mu sic. -

It's election time again at theHuist | | ^ A time to vote into office theperson you think is the mostpopular, not he person who necessarily will do the best job.Elections and promotions revolve around the well-knownsaying, "It's, wh o you know.**Th e Mercy hurst Student Government Executive Board electionsare no different

But this year, everything is not the same and will not follow theproverbial presidential path. ,.This year, two historic events win result after the ballots aretabulated.Jessica Cuffia will become the first wom an, in recent memory, tohead M SG. -WIt's about damn time.?The second record-setting event is that she will win by one of theschool's most lopsided margins. The reason is not due to the inadequacy of her opponent or that shehas the unanimous support of the student body; the fact is that sheis the epitome of her competition. Her challenger is none other than herself. That's right! With a student population just over 2,000, only Cuffia has chosento run for the dubious chair. |gtNot to say that sh e is not qualified; she is.She is the acting secretary. Is it that ttie students feel that the office is ow ned and controlledby the administration? This may be a misnomer, John Bruno did get the weight roomhours extended while he reigned as the MSG pres. The group, the MSG Executive Board, does not have their handstied, they have been very active around campus this year. You would think thatwith an increased involvement with campusaffairs, students would flock to succeed George Paydock as president *But Monday night, Cuffia was the only one to utter a campaignspeech concerning nomination for the position. It is a testament to apathy when one person runs for the MSG postStudents already avoid voting. If youknow that one name is going to be on the ballot, what is theincentive to cast a vote? She's going to win anyway. All Cuffia has to do is vote for herself and th e election is over.Do you think that if, for instance, the Academy Aw ards decidedthat Forrest Gump was the only movie up for best picture thatpeople would be poised on the edges of their seats to hear thewinner?Hell no . &Write in someone and make this year's election interesting. For Cuffia to be die single candidate is ludicrous. When she wins the bid to represent the college, here are somesuggestions to improve Ole' Mercyh urst

Her first act as MSG President should be to name a building afterherself.Live a little, Jessica. Why not dedicate something to yourself, everyone else does. The second andmoat important, "Weird UnderwearWednesday."(Underroo's are encouraged), i c Extra credit will be given to the student with the most exotic pairof skivvies. . ^^Jt, * >;" j |Thirdly, Twister should be a four-credit course. *\To make it more difficult, students will have to learn how to usethe spinner. v ' f * }And the last suggestion from thefilesof he Ryb Roast is to havefun. i . tr ] *& *t' ia crony and kow-tow tolhc demands of he bigwigs
