Dear Friends of the MAC,

Singing and dancing, movies and art, and music, music, music. This fall you can start to enjoy one of the most varied slates of events ever at the McConnell Art Center.

Singing? Opera Columbus will be presenting “Opera on the Edge,” and its abridged version of the timeless classic La Boheme, sung in English.

Dancing? Join us in November for the film Thinking on Their Feet: Women of the Tap Renaissance. The filmmakers sought out former vaudeville and MGM hoofers to create intimate portraits of the most influential living women tap dancers emerging from scenes in the studio, personal interviews and conversations. Jenai West, the director, will join us for an evening of chat and tap.

On View: The Faculty & Student Exhibition opens August 13th during the MAC Bash! You can meet our extraordinary art, music, film, photography and ceramics instructors. And you can enjoy their incredible works through October 9th. The work of Joe Anastasi will be on display from October 13 – December 31 in the Main Gallery, followed by Carol Hershey & the High Road Gallery, to kick off the New Year.

On Film: The MAC’s “Exhibition on Screen” Series will offer monthly films on the works of Goya, Beethoven, among others, and will take look at the variability of Renoir’s artistic reputation over the years. Speaking of taking a look, on October 14th you can watch Jimmy Stewart spy on his neighbors in one of Hitchcock’s top thrillers, Rear Window.

Music, Music, Music: Starting in November, Jazz at the MAC will kick off a series of Sunday performances featuring Aaron Scott. And once again the McConnell Arts Center Chamber Orchestra will have concerts throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing you around the MAC!

thinking on their feet: Women of the tap Renaissance A film by Jenai West

tuesday, november 29 at 7pmIn the 1970s and ‘80s, several women dedicated themselves to resurrecting and revolutionizing tap dance. Determined to keep tap dance alive, they sought out former vaudeville and MGM hoofers and convinced them to return to the stage, as well as developed new and innovative concert choreography. The film shows intimate portraits of the most influential living women tap dancers emerging from scenes in the studio, personal interviews and conversations, as well as rare footage of performances and choreography. Featuring Brenda Bufalino, Heather Cornell, Lynn Dally, Anita Feldman, Jane Goldberg, Sarah Petronio, and Linda Sohl-Ellison. Jenai Cutcher West is graduate of OSU, who also tap dances, writes about dance, teaches dance, and makes dance movies.

There will be structured sessions where students will have the opportunity to paint from life (direct observation). In these sessions we will work primarily from the still life and discuss such topics as developing a under-painting, mixing colors, formal issues (the use of art elements: line, value, color, shape and texture), and design principles (composition), and constructing images through blocks of colors via a direct approach to painting. For these sessions students have the choice of using oil or acrylic paints. Through lectures we will discuss the works of historical and contemporary painters in relation to this course, and students will receive feedback on their work through individual and group critiques. In addition to the structured sessions, students will be allowed and encouraged to work on their own paintings. For example, the student may work from photos, or perhaps they want to create an abstract painting. The instructor is prepared to discuss how the student can create a more visually engaging work through use of art elements and design principles.

henri Matisse Paper cut-outs Workshop (1 day)14 to adult | all skill levels Instructor: Patrick Durkinthursday, october 13: 6:30 –9:00pm oRthursday, December 15: 6:30 –9:00pm2014 was the year Matisse’s Cut-Outs captivated the art world. His exhibitions at The Tate Modern Museum in London and MOMA in NYC set an all time attendance record. Matisse’s contemporaries described his ultimate method as “the audacity of simplicity.” Although universally regarded as art’s greatest colorist, Matisse considered the Cut-Outs his life’s greatest achievement. This workshop will open with Durkin’s short documentary film, “Matisse’s Ultimate Method,” followed by detailed instructions on how to create your own paper cut-out masterpiece. Even if you think you have zero artistic ability, this workshop allows you to create a piece of art that will wow! Anyone, regardless of age or talent will walk away with a dynamic, colorful fine art original. This fun and inspiring workshop re-imagines his concept in an effort to bring the joys of creating to everyone. friends of the Mcconnell arts center (fRoMac) Join usAs members of FRoMAC, we provide important support to the MAC by volunteering for many events at the center. These range from ushering at concerts in the theater to hanging art work for exhibitions in the galleries to conducting tours for elementary school students. Whatever your talents or interests may be, we have a place that will fit you perfectly.

Another important part of our mission is to support local art education. We are very pleased that each year we are able to award an art scholarship to a talented graduating senior attending a high school in the Worthington Public School District.

In addition, we hold four general meetings each year. These fun and informative meetings include presentations by talented artists from many different fields, as well as opportunities to socialize and to meet new people.

FRoMAC is open to everyone wishing to support the MAC and local art education. The membership fee is $25.00 annually.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

gET INVOLVED @ THE MAC!

Volunteer spotlight: tam Dalrymple, front Desk face & Writer extraordinaire in her own words: The other day I was talking with a friend about my volunteering at the McConnell Arts Center.

“That’s cool,” she said. “That’s why I do it,” I replied. “So people will think I’m cool.”

Let’s face it, we volunteer for things because we get something out of it, even if it’s just that cool fuzzy volunteer feeling. At The McConnell Arts Center you can get the fuzzy feeling, discounts on classes, free admission to MAC events, and more.

When I am being very cool I’ll toss out a phrase like, “over at The MAC” or, “a class at The MAC.” This can prompt people to ask what “The MAC” is, which gives me an opportunity to enjoy another benefit of volunteering at the MAC: being in the know about so much of the arts scene in the Worthington area. What kinds of things are being planned for the Worthington Arts Festival this year? How about the Fourth of July? And like a good volunteer, I can point folks to The MAC Web site for the latest information.

You can get information on how to volunteer at the MAC right here. And stop by the front desk on Thursday afternoons. I will be there, being helpful. Oh, and cool.

Volunteer at the Mac!The MAC produces and hosts over 250+ events each year and we could not do it without the support from our volunteers. If you are interested in lending a hand during one of our many, varied, creative arts experiences, concerts, receptions and other special events, please contact Jenn Dalton, [email protected] to be added to our database. Every month volunteers receive an email with all upcoming opportunities. The perk of volunteering is attending said event for free. We hope you will take part and volunteer to bring art, music, film, dance, theater and more into your life and into our community!

The art of investing

Hamilton Capital

is a proud supporter

of The McConnell

Arts Center and

lots of local arts

organizations,

including BalletMet,

the Columbus

Symphony Orchestra,

Opera Columbus

and ProMusica.

Great art depends on two things: inspiration and expression. Anything can provide the inspiration. But the quality of the expression depends on the passion, skill, discipline and commitment of the artist.

At Hamilton Capital Management, we’re inspired by our clients and their dreams, and we apply our passion, skill, discipline and commitment to helping make those dreams come true with sound, dynamic, comprehensive investment strategies.

It’s not art, but it feels that way to us. And if it helps you achieve your dreams, it can feel that way to you, too.
