March 11, 2018 - Fourth Sunday of Lent Dear Parishioners,
I am pleased to share that Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap. has appointed Monsignor Thomas J. Dunleavy as Parochial Administrator, Pro Tem of Saint Joseph Parish. Monsignor Dunleavy will serve our faith community with the same pastoral and administrative responsibilities as that of a Pastor. Monsignor Dunleavy assumes this responsibility while continuing in his current assignment as a parish priest at Saints Simon and Jude Parish, West Chester where he will continue to reside. Msgr. Dunleavy has already begun his assignment here and has met with our parish staff, the priests and Sisters in the convent.
We are very pleased to welcome a son of Chester County to the parish! Msgr. Dunleavy was raised in West Chester, in Saint Agnes Parish where he attended elementary school, and he is a graduate of Bishop Shanahan High School when it was nearby Saint Agnes. Please be sure to welcome Msgr. Dunleavy as he is present in the school or church the days ahead.
Today we celebrate the fourth Sunday of Lent, which has for many centuries been called “Laetare Sunday.” Like the third Sunday of Advent ("Gaudete Sunday"), the fourth Sunday of Lent is a break in an otherwise penitential season.
The priest celebrant has the option to wear the liturgical color of Rose this day, as they may on Gaudete Sunday in Advent, and flowers may adorn the Altar. The use of rose vestments probably stems from an ancient Papal Tradition of blessing golden roses which would be sent to Catholic heads of state in Europe on the Fourth Sunday of Lent.
This day’s title originates from the opening antiphon or Introit of the Mass – “Rejoice, O Jerusalem…” There was a medieval tradition of visiting one’s “mother church” (the church where one was baptized) on this day. A family trip to see where mom, dad, or the children began their journey of faith could make for a fine Sunday afternoon outing.
May we rejoice that our Lenten Season is past its halfway point, and that we are quickly coming towards the annual commemoration of Holy Week.
Please see in our bulletin the details regarding our upcoming annual 40 Hours Devotions.
Know that your families will be in prayer as Msgr. Dunleavy, Fr. Donia and I celebrate the liturgies on our parish’s Feast Day, March 19. May God bless you all!

What a nice turnout we had for the Ecumenical Luncheon on February 21. Everyone who attended raved about the delicious lunch buffet thanks to the kindness of our parish Hospitality Committee members who made all the food and desserts that were provided. We would also like to thank Kathy Chapracki, Betty Cozzone, Rachael Doyle, Joan Garbers, Marie Hill, Chris, Caroline and Joe Kelly, Lisa Lannan, Michele Large and Susan Mandia who did everything that needed to be done to make this luncheon such a great success. Our heartfelt thanks goes to everyone who played a part in making this event so successful.
God Bless You, Karen & Pat

The Scrutinies Parishioners attending the 5 PM Mass on 3/10 and 9 AM Mass on 3/18 (the fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent) will share time with the RCIA group as they prepare to be welcomed into the Church.
The readings focus on the themes of baptism and repentance. The Gospel passages for these Sundays include the man born blind (John 9:1-41) and the raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45). These are the “scrutiny” Sundays. The scrutinies celebrate conversion and offer our Elect an opportunity for introspection along with time for prayer, reflection, repentance, and the exorcisms (a series of blessings conferred to strengthen them against the power of temptation, sin, and Satan; to lead them ever closer to Christ – the Way, the Truth, and the Life; and to deepen their decision and desire to love God above all else).
The Elect are asked to ponder the Word of God in their hearts, to know Christ who came to save the lost, to confess themselves to be sinners, to reject all that is displeasing to God, to ask the Holy Spirit to help them overcome their weaknesses, to learn how to please God, and to put their hope in Christ, finding peace and holiness in Him. The parish community is also asked at this time to seek continued conversion of heart so the weak may be strengthened, the broken restored, the lost found, and the found redeemed.
We are beginning a
Prayer Shawl Ministry Prayer shawl ministries began in 1998 by people who had both compassion for others and a love of knitting/crocheting. People gather and pray for shawl recipients as they begin making them. These intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl, and upon completion shawls are given to those undergoing medical procedures, those who need comfort after a loss, or those enduring times of stress. We would like to start such a ministry at St. Joseph parish. Please join us at one of two organizational meetings in the St. John Neumann Room in Church:
Monday, March 12 at 7 p.m.
Tuesday, March 13 after the 9 a.m. Mass
The final schedule will be determined by the organizational meetings. If you would like more info or are interested but cannot make either meeting, please contact Carol Grigson at 610-269-5413 or [email protected].

A Stewardship Prayer for March
Lord Jesus,
We journey with you this Lenten season, through prayer, fasting and almsgiving, ever closer to Jerusalem,
ever closer to your death on the cross.
We hear your words: “Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me,” but we are unsure of their meaning, or anxious
about their true intent.
Through the power of your Spirit, give us the strength to deny the “self” that keeps us from
being good stewards of those who need our love and compassion.
Give us a deeper awareness of the cross in our own lives so that we may embrace it and join our sufferings with yours and a world in need of your redemption.
And give us the confidence to follow you no matter the cost; knowing that if we die with you, we will also live with you and eternally rejoice in your resurrection.
We humbly ask this of you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.
