Joseph, An Earthly Father

Matthew 1:18• Now the birth of Jesus

Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Joseph Kept His Promise

• Mary was engaged to Joseph to show their love for each other.• Joseph never committed fornication.

Matthew 1:19• Then Joseph her husband,

being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

Joseph Believed in the Lord

• Joseph was taught about the Lord and trusted in Him and followed His law.• Joseph was thoughtful not willing to put Mary in public.

Matthew 1:20• But while he thought on these

things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

The Angel Met Joseph

• The angel instructed Joseph to take courage to take Mary as his wife.• The angel informed Joseph that Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 1:21• And she shall bring forth a

son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Joseph Listened Seriously

• Joseph was informed to name a son Jesus.• Joseph knew the meaning of Jesus – “for he shall save his people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:22• Now all this was done,

that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

Joseph Was Chosen to See the Fulfillment

• In Old Testament, Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled while Joseph was alive.

Matthew 1:23• Behold, a virgin shall be

with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Joseph Knew Isaiah 7:14

• A virgin will give birth to a son.• Emmanuel means God

with us.

Matthew 1:24• Then Joseph being raised

from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

Joseph Was a Man of Action

• Joseph acted immediately. Joseph obeyed God to take Mary as his wife.

Matthew 1:25• And knew her not till she

had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.

Joseph Obeyed God

• Joseph did not know Mary until after Jesus was born.• Joseph called Mary’s firstborn son Jesus.
