The Main Feature Season 40 - Issue 2 - Screening 26 September 2019 “White crow “ is a Russian expression for someone who doesn’t fit the norm; who stands out from the crowd. It is totally appropriate to describe the dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who throughout his life, including his private and personal life, confounded the expectations of the society around him. I volunteered to write these notes after seeing a screening of the Bolshoi Ballet’s production of the “Carmen Suite “ earlier this year. The ballet was originally choreographed as a showcase for the talents of an exceptional ballerina, but for me the excitement lay in the sheet physicality, the strength and the athleticism of the male dancers. This change in style is largely due to Nureyev. A fellow danseur at the Royal Ballet wrote “Until (Rudi) came along, all a man had to do to get into the Royal Ballet was, more or less, turn up and show willing. Nureyev completely changed the pace. He engaged with female dancers, manhandled them. It was exciting, virile.” But his story, told in this film, is about more than the history of dance, of course. It is about a complex and fascinating man, whose dramatic defection from the USSR in 1961, outwitting the KGB, grabbed the attention of the world, adding an element of the classic Cold War espionage novel to the mix.
