THE FOUR-WAY TEST Is it the TRUTH? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
THE OBJECT OF ROTARY The OBJECT of ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life. FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

We give thanks for this food prepared
by loving hands.
We give thanks for life, the freedom to enjoy it all,
and all other blessings.

strength to carry on and try to live as You would
have us. This we ask in the name of Christ, Our

Hello all and welcome to a new Rotary year!
Firstly, congratulations to IPP Bert for a job well done! Our club ended the year with
ten awards at the district handover ceremonies. We won Outstanding Club with Dis-
tinction, Outstanding President with Distinction, Presidential Citation with Distinc-
tion, the Rotary Club Central award, two awards for our work giving boats to the vic-
tims of typhoon Haiyan, and meritorious service awards for our members’ work in
RYLA, Boat for Lives, TRF, and RYLA Host. The club truly “Engaged Rotary,
Changed Lives.”The pages in this issue celebrate our fellowship and spirit as we
move to close a Rotary Year.
As we close the year, we open another one. You will note that the Magdalo’s front
page, back page, volume, and issue numbers have changed. Our committees are in
the process of being formed, and our grants are in the process of being finalized. Our
new facebook page is up (do a search on RC Mandaluyong on facebook) and http://
issuu.com/rcmandaluyong/docs/inductionprogram has a digital copy of our induction
program. We are beginning to update our website at www.rcmandaluyong.org, and
Sec. Edwin has written his first Secretary’s corner.
Today we have our Senior Assistant Governor and Assistant Governor in attendance
in preparation for our governor’s visit at 4 PM on July 11. Our club’s 52nd induction
ceremony immediately follows. Kudos goes to the hard work of the induction com-
mittee. It promises to be a good time to look back, and to look towards another year
of service and fellowship.
Together, let’struly “LIGHT UP ROTARY.”

GOOD IS THE ENEMY OF GREAT
This is the first line in Chapter 1 of Good to Great, Why Some Compa-
nies Make the Leap and Others Don’t, Jim Collin’s # 1 Bestseller.
Later on in the chapter, he says that good is the enemy of great is not
just a business problem. It is a human problem. Once we crack the code,
we should have something of value to any type of organization. Good
schools might become great schools, good churches might become great
churches, good companies might become great companies.
We can make the same analogy and say that by cracking the code, we
can make good rotary clubs into great rotary clubs. Why NOT?
I have only been with RCM since August 2013 but I see the strength of
our Club in its members. People with deep professional experience in
their own fields of expertise coming from different age brackets with a
common desire to make a difference.
One of the concepts we learned in Good to Great is Level 5 leaders,
“leaders who embody a paradoxical mix of personal humility and pro-
fessional will. They are ambitious, to be sure, but ambitious first and
foremost for the Company (organization), not themselves.

I had the honor of being inducted by one such leader. IPP Bert de
Luna was always modest and simple in his ways but I soon realized
he was driven and passionate about the Club and its members. I look
back at my first year as a Rotarian with fond memories because I was
able to play a palm tree in our DISCON Talent Presentation side-by-
side with IPP Bert. I also had the pleasure of bowling with him at one
of our socials. Apparently, we both play golf but have yet to hit the
greens together. I look forward to that, IPP Bert, now that you have
more time on your hands. I salute you IPP Bert for a job well done.
We are all excited for the revelry and pageantry of our Induction. The
Chairman of the Induction Committee, PP Herman promises a great
evening for one and all. Surely, there is more work to be done in or-
der to LIGHT UP ROTARY. We will surely be rolling up our sleeves
as a Club just as we have done so many times in the past. But on 11
July 2014, let us take a rest from our usual routine and celebrate an-
other milestone in our storied history. It will surely be a festive eve-
ning to usher in another year where our Club will surely reach new
heights with President Gion Fabella at the helm.

CAN’T HELP FALLING IN LOVE
Wise men say only fools rush in
But I can't help falling in love with you
Shall I stay
Would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you
For I can't help falling in love with you
