Hello all and welcome to our meeting. Our speaker today is Dr. Wendy Acevedo, PhD. She is the Dean of the JRU Nursing School at Jose Rizal University and will speak on the issues surrounding maternal and child-care in the Philippines. This is a result of more exciting news, which is that is Jose Rizal Uni-versity is now on board to become our partner in service. We signed a memorandum of agreement this week, and the University is planning a special Rotary Day to showcase the accomplishments of those students
who are participating in our previously sponsored Animation and Game Development degree and laboratory. We are also planning a speaker series, and they have agreed to assist us in our service mis-sions, as their corporate social responsibility goals fit quite nicely
with ours. Stay tuned for developments on this front, including a more formal signing ceremony when the JRU president returns. Speaking of service, PP Albert and Treas. John have been hard at work putting together the MPNAG culinary arts lab. At present, PP Albert is appealing for help in sourcing 6 gas cookers with electric ovens, a large refrigerator, and a gas cooker for teaching. Do let him or the secre-tariat know if you have any recommendations. We also held our first club assembly and it was a well-involved discussion. At the moment, our club dues will remain the same as they were last year, with the addition of a lighter structure for our members residing overseas. In this regard, you will be getting your statements of account soon, if not already. Lastly, the secretariat has been busy sorting out our accounts and preparing budgets. Sec. Edwin, Treas. John, and myself met to discuss club matters, and one result of this discussion is that you will begin to see a Treasurer’s corner in the Magdalo, and Sec. Edwin has agreed to begin assist-ing in the production. Thanks guys for your help! It hasn’t been all work however … I ran into PP Herman and PP Louie at the joint induction of our daughter clubs RC Mandaluyong North, Uptown, and West. It was great joining our fellow club members in fellowship, and seeing how “grown up” our daughter clubs have become. We do have a lot going on as we strive to “LIGHT UP ROTARY.” Do keep in step by checking our calendar at www.facebook.com/rcmandaluyong. Not a facebook member or just too long? Just use our shortened links: bit.ly/rcmanda --- for our facebook page bit.ly/rcmcalendar --- for our calendar bit.ly/rcmmag --- for the induction program, and soon, our Magdalo issues. Cheers!

HEROES
Hello Fellow Rotarians! We are on our eight regular meeting of our Club in RY 2014-2015 at EDSA Shangrila. To those who were away from the Club for a time now, a warm welcome back. We are glad to have you join us for today’s meeting here at our RC Manda-
luyong home despite the holiday yesterday. We celebrate National Heroes Day on Monday, the 25th of August and we commemorated the death of Sen. Benigno Aquino, Jr. yesterday. It made me think about heroes and their significance in
the modern age. According to Wikipedia, a hero (masculine) refers to characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self-sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greater good of all humanity.
In our own small way, as Rotarians, we are HEROES. In a world of hopelessness and despair due to complex problems and immense odds, we CHOOSE to bring hope through acts of service---our motto is simply: SERVICE ABOVE SELF. This is our way, the ROTARY WAY. This is a commitment and choice we made and we make each day. We choose to be that spark, the light in our community. Thus, it becomes easy to comprehend our call to action for RY 2014-2015: LIGHT UP RO-TARY.
CLUB REMINDERS We are scheduled to have a dinner meeting next Friday 29 August 2014 at 7 PM. We are open to suggestions, preferably a restaurant with a private room where we can meet and carry-on our Rotary agenda before the merriment begins. The Public Speaking Seminar is coming up next Saturday, 30 August 2014 from 1-5 PM at the Valle Verde Country Club. In case you need to brush up on your public speaking tech-niques, this might be a very good activity to attend. Don’t forget to check and LIKE our new Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/RCMandaluyong. You can keep track of the activities of RC Mandaluyong on the fan page.

HISTORY OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
The first four Rotarians (from left): Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul P. Harris, circa 1905-12. Paul P. Harris, an attorney, wanted to create a professional group with the same friendly spirit he felt in the small towns of his youth. On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting. They decided to call the new club “Rotary” after the practice of rotat-ing meeting locations.
Within five years clubs had formed across the country, from San Francisco to New
York.
In August 1910, Rotarians held their first convention in Chicago. The 16 clubs that
existed at that time united to form the National Association of Rotary Clubs.
In 1912, the name changed to International Association of Rotary Clubs to reflect the addition of clubs in other countries. The name Rotary International was adopted in 1922.
By July 1925, Rotary had grown to more than 2,000 clubs and an estimated
108,000 members on six continents.
Rotary’s reputation attracted presidents, prime ministers, and a host of other lumi-
naries to its ranks — among them author Thomas Mann, diplomat Carlos P. Rom-
ulo, and composer Jean Sibelius.
As Rotary grew, members pooled their resources and used their talents to serve their communities. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto: Service Above Self.
14
HISTORY OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
At the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, it was re-named The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary Inter-national.
GROWTH OF THE FOUNDATION
In 1929, the Foundation made its first gift of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into Easter Seals. When Rotary founder Paul Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring in to Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.
EVOLUTION OF FOUNDATION PROGRAMS 1947: The Foundation established its first program, Fellowships for Advance Study, later known as Ambassadorial Scholarships. 1965-66: Three programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants. 1978: Rotary introduced the Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants. The first 3-H Grant funded a project to immunize 6 million Philippine children against po-lio. 1985: The PolioPlus program was launched to eradicate polio worldwide. 1987-88: The first peace forums were held, leading to Rotary Peace Fellowships. 2013: New district, global, and packaged grants enable Rotarians around the world to respond to the world’s greatest needs. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, the Foundation has received contribu-tions totaling more than $1 billion.

TIE A YELLOW RIBBON
I'm comin' home, I've done my time
Now I've got to know what is and isn't mine
If you received my letter tellin' you I'd soon be free
Then you'll know just what to do if you still want me
If you still want me
CHORUS:
Tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree
It's been three long years
Do you still want me?
If I don't see a ribbon round the old oak tree
I'll stay on the bus
Forget about us
Put the blame on me
If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree
Bus driver, please look for me
'Cause I couldn't bear to see what I might see
I'm really still in prison, and my love she holds the key
A simple yellow ribbon's what I need to set me free
I wrote and told her this:
REPEAT CHORUS
Now the whole damn bus is cheering
And I can't believe I see
A hundred yellow ribbons 'round the old oak tree
I'm comin' home
