Editor’s letter

an you believe we are in autumn already? Children are going back to school, it won’t be long before pencils and uniforms make way for Halloween

costumes in supermarket aisles, and the nights will be closing in as the September Equinox takes place.

In this edition we look at the Chinese version of celebrating the end of summer and a successful harvest and the welcoming in of winter with the Chinese Moon Festival.

We take a look at Greek Gods, and what messages they have for us – learn how you can apply this logic to the men in your lives…

Have you ever had your palm read? Did you wonder how they could know things about your personality – well read on to pages 8&9 where we explore the inner-workings of palmistry!

Of course, we check in with two readers this month – Norma on page 6 and Mavis on page 7. Both of whom have long-standing gifts and like to bring encouraging and uplifting readings to those that enquire.

This month’s cover star features in a film, where the topic will resonate with many of us – feeling a bit stuck in a rut, feeling a bit invisible and yet not knowing quite how to change. In this case jigsaw puzzles were the key.

Lastly, we delve into loneliness – no longer just something that afflicts the old among us, and we see what astrology has in store for us in September.

The film PUZZLE is actually adapted from an Argentine film called ‘Rompecabezas’ the tile means puzzle in Spanish.

Agnes (played by our cover star Kelly Macdonald), has never ventured far from home or family, she was raised in a tight-nit immigrant community by her widowed father. Now in her early 40’s she finds herself somewhat adrift with a husband and children after focusing solely on their wants and needs.

As a birthday present Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle, and finds that she is very good at it, and it gives her a heady thrill that she has not experienced in a long time. This is the beginning of a quiet but dramatic transformation of her life.

Robert is a wealthy inventor, and somewhat of a recluse, and Agnes meets him as a ‘puzzle partner’, recognising her talent for puzzles, he recruits her for a world jigsaw tournament. This is something that Agnes wants to pursue, but it means stepping away from her domestic bubble to go after a new hobby. Not everyone in the family embraces the change so enthusiastically.

The time she spends with Robert is enlightening, the world of puzzling and his company allows her to understand herself better, to find her strengths and to set her on a new path. These personal insights bring her confidence and a level of assertiveness she didn’t have before. Which in turn lets her speak out at home and push against the defined boundaries and routines she has been saddled with.

But only Agnes can decide how she now wants to define herself within her family and just what she wants for herself moving forward!

To see the trailer: http://sonyclassics.com/puzzle/

“Life is random, but when you finish a puzzle you know

you’ve made all the right choices.”

Piecing together

the Puzzle

Peter Saraf, one of the producers, said “You think of jigsaw puzzling as something incredibly solitary and inward, something that pulls you into a smaller world, but in PUZZLE, this very solitary activity actually opens up the world for our heroine.”

As singular as Agnes is, her story speaks to something universal. Says Saraf, “I think that idea of following your heart, of following your passion, and allowing yourself to be happy is something that will resonate with people.”

The writers, producers and actors in the film have tried hard to not let the characters be cliché, it would have been easy to portray Agnes as a stereotypical housewife who was bored and lacking in interests, but what you actually see is a person that moves around the house and within her family unit as virtually unseen. But in fact, as the film develops you see she is so much more than the preordained organised life she has carved out for herself.

It would be so easy to dislike her husband, but the film-makers manage to present a man who loves his wife and even tries to change for her, but he still manages to not fully see her.

Kelly Macdonald has an enviable list of credits to her resume, that bridge television and films, and yet is still very unassuming in terms of Hollywood stardom. According to www.indiewire.com this film might just be the vehicle that sees her as a ‘true star’ – with a film that puts her firmly centre-stage.

In an interview with IndieWire, Kelly said about Puzzle: “I was very interested in Agnes and I wanted to have the chance to act her story out. The fact that she is – oh, you know, this is sort of trite to say – but she is a puzzle herself. She’s very run of the mill and ordinary, but everybody’s got something about them that they don’t always get to show people around them. She’s a very courageous woman.”

In a complete change of direction from Puzzle, the Scottish actress will next reprise the voiced part in Disney’s film ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’, where she acts as Princess Merida. According to the BBC, memes are already surfacing making fun of the film trailer and the indecipherable Scottish accent/slang.

The Film is released in UK cinemas on the 7th September 2018.

“Stunning. A near-perfect movie. Kelly Macdonald is remarkable, riveting even in her quietest moments. Irrfan Khan is incredibly subtle and deadpan.”Jordan Ruimy, THE PLAYLIST

I just wanted to leave feedback for the lovely Mavis. She is a fantastic reader, warm and friendly. All of her predictions always come to pass, even down to exact dates. For a fabulous, uplifting reading contact Mavis.Rhian, Walsall

The first step is to look at the shape of the hand. The hand has four shape classifications, that correlate to the four elements:

Air Hand: This shape is characterised by long fingers; the person craves excitement and looks for new things to do and explore – they are likely artistic.

Earth Hand: This hand is denoted by a square shaped palm and short fingers. These are down-to-earth folk, they have lots of energy and are both practical and reliable.

Fire Hand: The palm will be long in shape, but the fingers will be short. For this hand type it is all about living life to the fullest, they often have a lot of drive and are sporty.

Water Hand: Long slim fingers, accompany a long palm on this hand. These folks are usually quite ‘dreamy’ in personality, they are caring and sensitive people.

The second step is to look at the mounts (sometimes called fleshy pads), which sit at the base of each finger and on the palm. The size of the pad, really denotes how strong or weak we are in each area.

At the base of the palm (left to right)Mount of Luna: Imagination and IntuitionMount of Neptune: PerceptionMount of Venus: Health & Happiness

In the mid-section of the palm (left to right)Mars Negative: Honesty and Staying PowerPlain of Mars: Passion & EmotionsMars Positive: Energy levels

At the base of the fingers (left to right)Mount of Mercury: Intelligence & CommunicationMount of Apollo: Creative and Artistic abilitiesMount of Saturn: Sense of Responsibility & Common SenseMount of Jupiter: Ambition & Self-Worth

The third step is to look at the lines. There are five main lines that we assess on the palms, each of which tell us about character and the events in a life. The lines can even tell us what stage a person is at in terms of their career, love life, health and more…

There are certain marks on the lines, for example crosses or stars that point to events or turning points in a person’s life. These might denote a need to take extra care, or a break may demonstrate a complete stop of energy.

Hand Reading palms is likely to have started in the Far East as long as 4000 years ago, it is mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures and The Old Testament. It is thought hand reading,

also known as Palmistry and palm reading spread in popularity throughout Greece and the Roman Empire and has been practised in one form another ever since.

ReadingsThere is a difference between what your dominant and passive hand can tell you. Generally, your dominant hand (the one you write with), reveals the aspects of your personality and how others perceive you. It can also assess your talent, your health, your life in general and likely future successes you will have. Whereas your passive hand is much more about your potential, your imagination and your instincts. Here is a basic guide to Hand Reading:

8 | FREE SPIRIT FREE SPIRIT | 9

The Life Line: Despite the title, the life line does not actually determine how long a life will be, but is more about how you will live your life. A clear line likely means that you are bubbly and sociable with plenty of energy. A weak line means you lean towards being introverted and like your own company.

The Head Line: This line is all about your world view-point, are you a born worrier or do you have an easy-going demeanour? A weak line points to more of an emotional personality, and perhaps a tendency towards being indecisive, whereas a clear line would make you more logical and rational.

The Fate Line: Fame and fortune is the name of the game with this line. Which really means will life be harder for you, with you getting thrown around by life a bit, and learn from your mistakes (weak line), or will life come easier for you, with you being a born leader (strong line). Here there is a third scenario, with no fate line showing – which generally represents someone who doesn’t want any responsibilities in life!

The Heart Line: As you might expect this line deals with romance, relationships and feelings. The way the line curves might show you as an extrovert or introvert, whether you are emotionally sensitive or unable to express your feelings. Where the line ends tell how seriously you take emotions, your levels of loyalty, passion and common sense, and whether you will be jealous, demanding or emotionally immature. Even the position of the palm impacts this line to tell us if you are well-balanced, sociable, and able to demonstrate your feelings.

The Apollo Line: The Apollo line is one that might be present, but equally you may not have one. Those that are lucky enough to have this line likely have a sunny disposition and will be successful in life.

The fourth step is to assess the fingers and thumb. Even your fingers, finger tips and thumb contain information about who you are and where you are going. In general, pointed fingers suggest an artistic person with sensitive qualities, whereas square fingertips suggest a more logical and practical person.

Thumb: In regards to the thumb, what it tells us is all in relation to how close to the fingers it is. A thumb that is close to the fingers means a shy person. An open thumb (further from the fingers) belongs to someone who is more relaxed. If the thumb is roughly the same size as the little finger then this suggests a healthy ego. A long thumb would mean a take-charge sort of person who is skilled and organised. A short thumb indicates someone who is unmotivated and weak.

Index Finger: This finger is represented by Jupiter, and is suggestive of your leadership qualities. The length of the finger expands on this area – normal – can lead when needed, and has a well-balanced ego. Short – a shy person with not so much ability to take initiative. Long – maybe too much confidence and can be arrogant.

Middle Finger: The middle finger is associated with Saturn and signifies wisdom and responsibility. Normal – has a good sense of duty, short – struggles when making decisions, long – trustworthy but can take on too much.

Ring Finger: The ring finger is represented by Apollo and shows your creativity and emotional side. Normal – sociable, artistic and demonstrative. Short – lacks creativity and is closed off emotionally. Long – emotional, lets you know how they are feeling.

Little Finger: This finger is associated with Mercury and signifies communication skills and honesty. Normal – good communication abilities. Short – they can get easily tongue-tied. Long – they are gifted, public speaking or even writing is their thing.

This information just gives you the basics of palmistry to spark your interest, in future articles we can delve more in-depth, for

example covering the writers fork and the simian line (connected to the headline), as well as the minor lines and markings, such as the ring of Solomon, the bracelets of Neptune and more.

Do you know the

FREE SPIRIT | 11

Greek mythology is full of tales of desire, heart-ache, life and death, they ruled heaven and earth and passed down their inherent wisdom giving lessons in morals, regret, love and forgiveness.

Why not delve into the masculine Gods with us, and see if you can apply a little bit of their logic to the men in your lives?

Male Gods of Wisdom?

Zeus God of Conflict ResolutionThe overriding message from Zeus – is to know when to walk away. Sometimes the strongest thing to do in a conflict is to remove yourself from the situation, it is not a sign of weakness to choose this option. On occasion there is just nothing to be gained from fighting, and rising above such moments, will give you much more inner peace. Don’t be afraid to let a situation go, sometimes releasing your hold, will allow fate and destiny to step in, and the problem will resolve.

Hermes God of Reflections, Astrology, Astronomy, Roads, Travel, Language and WritingHermes message is about reflecting on yourself and in turn how your thoughts, feelings and actions are being projected on to others and the wider world. This is a very poignant God for todays living, in a world of social media it is easy to imagine that others are leading a better life than us. But don’t let a distorted view of the world colour your reality! As and when you recognise qualities in others, try to take time to appreciate those same qualities that you have within you. Look for the blessing in life and feel gratitude daily.

Hades God of the UndergroundBeing God of the Underground, does conjure up all sorts of worrying thoughts, and Hades was known for delivering foreboding news and the dark aspects of life. But his underlying message is one of metamorphism. It is very often hard in life to let go, whether someone has passed away, or a relationship needs to end, but trusting there is a reason behind things and going forward with grace will be its own reward in the end. When something comes to end, inevitably room for a new beginning opens up!

Eros Cupid! God of Emotional and Spiritual HealingAphrodite’s companion – Eros is usually depicted with a bow and arrow, and we think of him as being a little mischievous and not shy about match-making! But on the more serious side his message is one of needing to love yourself first. Our overall wellbeing, and ultimately higher spiritual awareness, comes only once we are at peace with ourselves.

Dionysus The God of Indulgence,

Wine and FertilityDionysus knew how to have a good

time, he liked nothing more than travelling the world, having fun and gifting wine as he went. Whilst this

sounds quite frivolous, it is an important message – that sometimes you need

to relax and have fun. Bottling up emotions whether they are stresses

about work, home life, money or more rarely ends well. Every now and again time out from the hum-drum of life and

an ability to share your worries, can give you the mental break that you

need to see things more clearly.

Apollo God of Arts and of ProphecyThe message from Apollo is to embrace your creativity. Apollo was what we would call an old head on young shoulders, he had a gift for foresight from a young age. He was the son of Zeus and Leto, and people travelled to the Oracle at Delphi from all over the world to hear his prophecies. One of his reasons for embracing creative expression was for ridding the soul of toxic thoughts and feelings from the past, allowing a new and brighter future to unfold.

Chinese Moon Festival

The Chinese Moon Festival also known as the Mooncake or Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional lunar harvest festival celebrated in both Chinese and Vietnamese cultures. The festival can trace its roots back some 3,000 years having been first described in Rites of Zhou a written collection of rituals of the Western Zhou Dynasty. The Moon Festival is as important in Chinese culture as Christmas is in the UK. This year the Festival will fall on Monday 24th September.

The Moon Festival like many harvest festivals is a celebration of the plentiful food that summer has produced and a welcoming of the winter. The festival is held on the 15th day of the eight month in the Chinese calendar which in the Gregorian calendar is September or early October, close to autumn equinox. The festival only became an official public holiday in China in 2006 when the Government of the People’s Republic of China listed it as ‘intangible cultural heritage’ however it has been a public holiday in Taiwan for some time.

The reason for also being called the Mooncake festival is that Mooncakes are traditionally eaten on this day. They are round or rectangular pasties around four inches wide and one to two inches thick traditionally filled with a thick red bean or lotus seed paste but they can also be filled with strawberry or any other flavour jam as an alternative. The tops of the cakes are often highly decorated with Chinese symbols and it is customary to give them as a present to family and friends. You may also see Chinese sky lanterns in the sky on the night of the Moon Festival as this is also part of the tradition.

Another tradition that has grown around the Chinese moon festival is to use the night for matchmaking, dances are held for young men and women to find partners. In some parts of China women will throw their handkerchiefs into the crowd and the man who catches it will have a chance of romance. Couples also use this night for spending romantic time together, if it is a clear night they will go for a walk under the full moon light and find somewhere quiet to sit and watch the stars while eating Mooncake.

People often mistake being alone for being lonely, but they are two very different things. Plenty of people that choose a single existence, or have it thrust upon them live full and meaningful lives with plenty of human interaction and connections, but conversely there are many people who are in relationships, surrounded by family and friends and still feel lonely.

Of course, each of us will have different ideas about what constitutes being lonely, but you might be shocked to discover just how many young people this is impacting, it is not all your stereotypical old person living alone at the end of the lives scenario.

So, why is it happening?

• One reason is people prioritise work, over relationships. Getting into work early, finishing late, commuting etc, is leaving people with smaller amounts of time to forge and maintain meaningful relationships, and folk have less energy to go out after work once home chores are complete.

• Social media has played a role, with many spending hours perusing friends accounts, as opposed to actually making real-life dates to meet up. • Many of us are now working from home, taking away a whole group of people that we might otherwise have interacted with on a day-to-day basis.

• In a lot of cases, going about our lives we are having ‘interactions’, conversations with partners, children, family and so on that involve, taking the dog to the vets, getting gym kit ready, making sure homework is done, what to have for tea tonight etc. But don’t actually contain in-depth conversations that are life-affirming, and really get to a person’s heart in terms of thoughts and feelings on what is going on in their lives.

How to get back the human touch:

Use social media the way it was intended, to enhance and strengthen your real-life relationships. Use it as a way to arrange physical meet-ups with people you actually know and want to spend time with. Then use the social aspects of it, to keep in touch in between seeing them, so that they know you are thinking of them and vice versa.

Organise your family life in a way that encourages interaction and conversation. That could be limiting screen-time. Having family evening meals around a table. Once a week having a board-game night. Encourage relaxing fun time, where everyone is present and focused on each other, you might be surprised by what conversation flows.

If a lack of friends, or no work colleagues is a problem, then try and find some like-minded people to do activities with that you enjoy. Try saying yes to more things, especially those that will bring you in to contact with others. Let the people you do know, that you are interested in meeting new friends, not necessarily romantic friends, but just people to share interests with. Considering a new hobby, sports or even volunteering are great ways to start.
