SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT Have you ever had a glimpse of God? Perhaps you perceived God’s presence in a quiet moment of prayer, a tender conversation with a loved one, or a difficult situation that was resolved unexpectedly. Peter, James, and John in today’s Gospel were given a glimpse of Christ’s glory on the mountain, as Jesus was transfigured before them. Abram put his faith in God and saw God’s power in a wondrous sign of covenant love. We have the promise of eternal life with God in heaven. This promise brings with it responsibility, as people who are called to live as Christ’s very own in the world. Lent is the perfect time to resolve to listen more attentively to the Lord and follow God’s ways, assured that in doing so, we put our faith in the one, true, and faithful God.

HAVE FAITH The story of the Transfiguration of Jesus in the Luke’s Gospel this week is similar to the ones in Matthew and Mark. One difference I noticed in Luke’s version is that Jesus does not tell the three disciples to keep it secret. It seems they decided on their own not to tell anyone. Maybe Luke knew that Jesus had asked them to keep quiet, but wanted to show that the disciples were not about to tell what they had seen and heard. Why not? One reason may be that the experience was so personal and overwhelming that they didn’t have the words to express it fully. All three Gospels mention white clothing and Matthew says that Jesus’ face shone like the sun (17:2). Perhaps they could not look at Jesus directly without hurting their eyes. It brings to mind the Old Testament idea that if you looked at the face of God, you would die. So the disciples may not have wanted to talk about what they could not understand. The other reason may be what they heard. While Matthew and Mark just say that Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah, Luke is more specific: They “spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem” (9:31). Jesus had just said that he would suffer, die, and be raised from the dead in Luke 9:22. It was bad enough that Jesus was telling them this. They probably hoped he was just telling them the worst that could happen, not what really would happen. So hearing it from Moses and Elijah as well as from Jesus was too much for them. This is where we come in. The apostles were afraid to face the coming passion and death of Jesus. I think we are like them in that we suffer more in anticipating what would hurt us than we do going through it. Our fears are often worse than the reality. That is where faith can help. In faith, we hear Jesus tell us not to fear, as he often told his disciples. We know that Jesus suffered on the cross, so he knows what suffering is. And faith tells us that he is with us even when the suffering is the result of our own sins. After all, he himself suffered because of our sins. So have faith!

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT 17 MARCH 2019

TAKE A STEP How do you listen to God? While it might seem as though it is impossible to hear God’s voice, the more we listen, the more attuned we become to hearing. We listen in prayer, in reading the Bible and hearing sacred scripture, in the homily, and in the prayers during Mass. We listen in the companionship of other faith-filled friends who share their hopes and dreams with us, and who help us discern what God may be calling us to do. Abram heard God’s voice and opened himself to the unknown. Peter, James, and John followed Jesus, even while still unsure about him or his mission. Each took steps toward faith, and in faith followed God’s way. Whether in times of certainty, when it seems God is everywhere we look, or in those periods when we yearn to know that God is with us, we are called to listen, to trust, and to take steps of faith, modeling our lives on the life and call of Jesus Christ.

OR A LEAP At times, the steps we take feel more like leaps of faith. While we might be called to “walk the walk” of faith in our daily lives, as the apostles and countless other disciples have throughout the ages, there are moments when we may need to step out into an unknown future, as did Abram before us. The glimpses of God’s presence and glory experienced by Abram and the disciples provided needed encouragement at pivotal moments, and especially when it seemed for a while that God was absent. The glimpses we perceive in those moments of closeness with God help us to remain on Christ’s path, especially when we are unsure of what to do next. With the psalmist, take a leap of faith and find hope in the Lord: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The Lord is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?” Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company

Seven Sorrows of Mary Anyone who has ever received news that brought with it a prediction of future turmoil and pain has been there with Mary when Simeon foretold the heartache she would have. Anyone who has ever made a decision to leave a situation that was harmful and destructive has been there with Mary when she fled into Egypt to save her son's life. Anyone who has ever searched with panic and dismay over the loss of a valued part of their life has been there with Mary when she hunted for her missing child. Anyone who has ever met suffering on a deeper level has been therewith Mary when she met her suffering son on his path to Calvary. Anyone who has ever held vigil at the bedside of a dying person has been there with Mary as she stood beneath the cross. Anyone who has ever embraced a part of their life that has died has been there with Mary when she received the dead body of her child in her arms. Anyone who has ever stood in a cemetery with tears clutching at their heart has been there with Mary when she watched her son being laid to rest in the tomb. As we walk with Mary in her sorrows, we discover that we are not alone in what is most difficult for us. In Mary, we have a mother, a sister, a mentor and a friend. Join us as we learn about and reflect on the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Our presentation will beheld on March 24th at 9:40am in St Ann's Church.

The Church encourages us to make confession a regular part of our spiritual life, especially during the holy season of Lent, as we reflect on our Baptism and repentance. Again this year, parishes are participating in a Lenten initiative called The Light is ON for You. Every Monday evening during the Lenten season, beginning on the first Monday of Lent, March 11th, and continuing through Monday of the last full week of Lent, April 8th, confessions will be heard in every parish so that Catholics can come to or return to this incredible source of God’s grace, mercy and healing.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT 17 MARCH 2019

ENCOUNTER LENT Join our faith community—and more than 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States—in a life-changing Lenten journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. During the 40 days of Lent, we will encounter the needs of the world.

LENTEN REMINDERS Lent is a time for sacrifice and for spiritual renewal as we reflect upon our Baptism and the call given to each of us to walk as disciples of the Lord. The following fast and abstinence regulations are observed: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are

days of fast and abstinence. Fridays during Lent are days of

abstinence. All Catholics who have reached their

14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and on all Fridays during Lent.

All Catholics over 18 years of age to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal and two smaller meals unless dispensed or excused.

We are provided with three personal challenges associated with our individual observance of Lent:

Almsgiving – generously giving to those in need

Fasting – practicing self-discipline and self-denial

Prayer – reading, hearing and reflecting on the Word of God

Lent is also a penitential season. It is a time to seek forgiveness, to look inward and to admit our shortcomings and failures. It is a time to regroup and to prepare. How can you spend your time during Lent?

By “giving up” things you hunger after, such as sweets or alcohol; or activities you desire, such as vacations, concerts or movies.

By “doing” things to help others, such as offering an extra donation to the poor or helping those in need by providing food or clothing.

By “adding” to our normal routine, such as going to daily Mass, praying the Stations of the Cross and going to Confession.

St. Ann’s Youth Group and Confirmation Class will present…

The Living Stations of the Cross APRIL 14TH AT 7:30PM IN ST. ANN’S CHURCH

ALL ARE INVITED TO ATTEND! The youth of St. Ann’s Parish present a powerful, prayerful and spiritual meditation on the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

This is a wonderful opportunity to join in this prayer of our Church for all family members while supporting the youth of our Parish, for their time and talent and bringing us closer to Jesus during this Lenten Season.

During Lent, the Mercy Chalice will be present in the Church. The Chalice is a symbol of the Sacrifice of the Mass which makes it possible for us to be present as Jesus’ Sacrifice at the Cross. You are invited to place in the Chalice written declarations of sacrifices you will make during

Lent. We also encourage you to put prayer requests into this symbol of God’s infinite love and mercy. As the smoke rising from the incense we burn represents our prayers rising up to God, on Holy Saturday we will burn the papers put into the Chalice representing how our prayers and sacrifices have risen to God.

Easter Flowers One of the traditions in our church is that we decorate the church with flowers for Easter in memory and in honor of the loved ones of our parish family. We invite all parishioners to share in the experience through a memorial or any other special intention, by using the Easter Flowers Envelopes included in your set. Please ensure that the envelopes have the names of your family members printed clearly and specify “living or deceased”. Please place your envelopes in the collection basket, the Poor Box or bring them to the Parish Office by April 14th to make sure the loved ones you are honoring are listed in the Bulletin. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

DEATH OF MSGR. PAUL KNAUER Reverend Monsignor passed away peacefully on March 8th, 2019. Father Paul was ordained on May 23, 1964 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, NJ. Father Paul retired in 2014. After his retirement he remained active in the Church saying Mass at churches as needed and speaking at churches in support of Catholic Relief Services. Father Knauer had a love of life, music, art, literature and a good joke. He ministered to his parishioners with compassion and was a religious anchor for his family. He will be sorely missed. A funeral mass was held on Thursday, March 14th, 2019 at St. Lawrence the Martyr Church.
