If everything goes as planned, there will be three professional sports leagues play-ing games as you read this article. We went months with-out anything and now Baseball, Bas-ketball and Hockey are all now happen-
ing. Granted there are no fans in the stands and no one knows how long they can go without COVID19 impacting the plans.
Unlike baseball that is having its teams travel to various cities, basketball and hockey are being played in “A Bubble”. That term is used to describe the confined environment in which the players, coaches and other team representatives live and play their games. The thought is that if you reduce the exposure to those outside the teams, there is less chance for the players and others of picking up the virus. I have even heard that if one leaves the bubble and comes back, he has to self quaran-tine for 14 days.
Used in the COVID19 context, “The Bubble” is a form of protection. In the past I have heard the term “Bubble” used in a different way. I have heard Christian preachers warn their congregations of staying in “the Chris-tian Bubble”. If all one does is attend church activities and associate with other Christians, how can one help spread the Good News? We are to be in the world and not of the world.
For example, if one belongs to a church bowling league, he or she might consider

leaving that league and join a house league. Being around non-Christians might increase the opportunities to do something we should-n’t, but it gives us an opportunity to reach out to others on behalf of Jesus Christ.
I know there is no one on a bowling league right now and being in “The Bubble” is a wise practice to stay safe. But when we move be-yond the pandemic, it might be helpful to see what kind of “Christian Bubble” we find our-selves in. Are there places and spaces where we are connecting to non-church people?

Summer with WSCS during COVID-19
With our church closed for many months because of COVID, WSCS communication has been relegated to email or phone calls. The first project was spearheaded by the wonderful bulletin board that Barbara Bartley installed entitled ‘Heroines of the Bible.” While few have actually seen the display, Barbara took a picture that was sent to the membership. (See picture below). All the members were invited to write about their favorite Biblical hero-ine. Some of the stories they shared were personal and heart-warming. These narratives were collected into one document and emailed or “snail-mailed” to all the members.
Our normal collection of health kits for World Medical Relief had to be put on hold because of COVID, and in its place WSCS members are encouraged to look through their accumulation of new, all-occasion and holiday cards (with envelopes). Cards that we had purchased (but not sent) and were no longer appropriate might be just the card a service person in Afghanistan, Syria or elsewhere would enjoy sending to a loved one back home. A box for these cards is located by the Hunger Barrel on the back staircase at the church. Or individuals may mail these cards to: Cards for our Troops, 3123 Riva Road – Unit #74, Riva, MD 21170. All members and friends of FCC are invited to join in this outreach project.
It is unclear what restrictions COVID will make when it is time for the normal WSCS meeting in September. We may not be able to safely meet at the church, but the WSCS membership will be involved in some project that will keep the group viable and engaged.
