Outsmart the Scammers

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. —Matthew 7:15

Come to the Chapel on Thursday, July 28, at 1:30 p.m. to hear Joe Can-narella from Edward Jones and Kathy Cormier from Cormier & Robb CPA’s speak.

Incidents of fraud are on the rise and scammers’ tactics are becoming more complex. This presentation will give you the informa-tion you need to “Outsmart the Scammers”. The pro-

gram will teach you how to spot certain red flags that may indicate a fraudulent

encounter, give you resources you can use in the event you are targeted, and steps you can take to protect yourself. Join us for this informative presentation.

Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc. (FTRI) provides free amplified phones for Florida Residents who are hearing impaired. If you have a specialized phone that is not working properly, you have ques-tions about your phone, or if you think this service would be helpful to you, please come to the Hobby Room on Tuesday, July 26, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon where a representative will distribute these special phones. Please sign up on the bulletin board if interested. To qualify for a phone you need to wear hearing aids or have a hearing impairment.

the first player whose hand consists entirely of a legal set or sets goes out or goes “Mah-jong” wins. In fact, the game

is effectively the same as the card game Rummy. For what always appears initially to be a very com-plicated game, Mahjong is remarkably simple when reduced to its basics and it is only the accompanying rituals and complex scoring that changes this. One of these rituals, the process of shuffling the tiles at the start of the game, is known as “the twittering of the sparrows”, presumably because of the accompanying noise. Since Mahjong means “the game of the spar-rows” or “sparrow tiles” in Chinese, it seems likely that this is the source of the game’s title. If interested, sign-up on the bulletin board by Sunday, July 31. There needs to be at least three people to play a game.

Midweek Movie

The Midweek Movie for Wednesday, July 27, is The Spirit of St. Louis with James Stew-art. On May 21, 1927, the world changed. “Lucky Lindy” landed outside Paris. The Spirit of St. Louis shows the struggles and success of Charles A. Lind-bergh, the pioneering flyboy, who, like test pilots and astronauts to follow later, had the “right stuff” of aviation heroism. Lindbergh fan James Stewart, him-self a pilot, sought the role and was initially turned down. This 1957 video is 2 hours and 15 minutes long and will be shown at 11:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel.

Book Review with Gene Copolla

Gene Copolla, Director of the Palm Harbor Library, will present a Book Review on Thursday, August 4, at 1:30 p.m. in the Village Room. He will review the books “H is for Hawk” by Helen Mac-Donald and “Condominium” by John B. MacDonald.

Welcome to Golden Sands, the dream condomin-ium built on a weak foundation and a thousand dirty secrets.

Here is a panoramic look at the shocking facts of life in a Sun Belt community—the real estate swin-dles and political payoffs, the maintenance charges that run up and the health benefits that run out... the crackups and marital breakdowns... the disaster that awaits those who play in the path of the hurricane...

Making Memories Matter

(Please see ‘Memory Matters’ on page 4)

Have you ever been in a rush and couldn’t re-call where you placed your keys? Have you ever run into an old friend and couldn’t remember their name? Some forgetfulness is completely normal but when these incidents begin to progress in severity or become so common they interfere with your daily life then action may need to be taken. Dementia is an umbrella term that describes several declines in memory loss, communication, and brain-related func-tions.

The most common form of dementia is Alzheim-er’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive form of dementia that is responsible for up to 80 per-cent of all diagnosed dementia cases and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Alzheim-er’s disease progresses through three different stages ranging from mild to severe. While Alzheimer’s disease does not have a specific cure, living a healthy lifestyle can prevent or offset the severity.

The questions below, released by the Alzheimer’s Association, can help you identify early signs of de-mentia. Have you noticed:

• Memory loss that disrupts your daily life?• Challenges in planning or solving problems?• Difficulty completing familiar

tasks at home, at work, or at leisure?

• Confusion with time or place?• Trouble understanding visual im-

ages and spatial relationships?• New problems with words in speaking or writing?• Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace

steps?• Withdrawal from work or social activities?

If you answered YES or SOMETIMES, you may need to speak with your physician to address your concerns. It’s typical to misplace items or forget the

date from time to time, but regular occurrences may indicate the need to consult your physician.

Some causes of Alzheimer’s disease cannot be reversed, such as genetics or age, but our brain and overall health is dependent on the nutritional choices we make and the activities we take part in, such as exercising and socializing.

Regardless of whether or not you have noticed a change, keeping your mind sharp through regular “exercise” is beneficial. Activities like crossword puzzles and brain games, socializing, and reading can promote strong connections in your brain. Regular physical activity addresses the mind-body connection and promotes overall health. So take charge today—MAKE YOUR MEMORIES MATTER!

Gently Read Newspapers WantedWe are looking for dona-

tions of current day newspapers to be donated each morning for use in the Care Centers. Enjoy your morning coffee and news-

paper and then share the knowledge and information that a daily newspaper brings by repurposing the newspaper to the Care Centers instead of recycling it in the Trash Room. Donations should be brought to the Administration Office by 11:00 a.m., however earlier drop offs are welcome. These newspapers will be shared with the Residents in all the Care Centers.

A Lane of Yellow

Led the EyeA lane of yellow led the eye, unto a purple wood;Whose soft inhabitants to be, surpasses solitude;

If bird the silence contradict, or flower presume to show.In that low summer of the West; impossible to know.
