MESSAGE FROM BRIAN CHRISTIAN – PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents I trust that you enjoyed the short half-term break and that your sons and daughters have returned refreshed and all set for the final lap of this academic year. For a number of students, of course, the next week or two will be particularly demanding as they continue to sit public examinations. So far, it seems, the majority feel that things are largely going to plan and that their hard work throughout their IGCSE and A Level courses is now paying off. At this stage, the best advice I can give is that they must maintain their focus and the intensity of their efforts; sitting examinations is a draining experience and those candidates who are able to keep going through to the end without flagging are the ones who will earn the results their abilities merit. Although it was a very relaxed and enjoyable evening, there were no signs of complacency or lack of focus being displayed by our Y13 A level students at their Leavers’ Dinner. This year group has always come across as a sensible, mutually supportive bunch and that was certainly the impression they all gave at a fittingly celebratory occasion at TAC on Wednesday. It was good to see many of their parents and other family members there to enjoy the event with them and I know how much their teachers appreciated one more opportunity to offer their best wishes. Whether they joined BST at the start of the A level course or way back in Nursery, I hope that the Class of 2016 will always look back on their time here with genuine affection and that they will continue to keep in touch. They will be much missed. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to be able to accompany some of our Y10 students as they attended a very high-powered symposium on Women’s Leadership in the DIET building. The event was jointly hosted by Showa University and the University of Harvard, and the speakers included a number of high profile Japanese politicians, senior academics and figures from the world of business. The central theme of the symposium was the overcoming of the obstacles that discourage or prevent women from taking on senior roles in Japan, and I know that our students were thoroughly engaged in the detailed arguments presented to us. Opportunities like these are so important if we are to educate young people to play a part in shaping the future of society, and I feel sure that those who came along yesterday will have been inspired to feel that they can make a real difference if they choose to do so. Speaking of inspiration, especially given that we have a very busy weekend of Futsal coming up, I am sure that many of our young sportsmen and women will have been given a boost by the opportunity to get so close to the Barclays Premier League trophy at Showa yesterday. Along with the ATP trophy, this magnificent piece of silverware – accompanied by Keith and Nigel, two extremely helpful and knowledgeable security guards – stayed on campus long enough for hundreds of excited students to have their photograph taken with it. My sincere thanks to BST parent Mr Ryan Bacher for making this possible – a good omen for the tournaments on Saturday and Sunday, I hope. Finally, I look forward to seeing many of you at the PTA End of Year reception at Legatos this evening – do come along to what is always an enjoyable occasion if you can. Tickets are available on the door. Enjoy your weekend! Brian Christian

SECONDARY NEWS

Dear Students and Parents, I hope you all had a wonderful half term break. This week, although shorter, has been typically busy. Year 13s had their Leavers’ Dinner on Wednesday and it was another reminder about what a lovely group of young people they are; we wish them the very best as they embark on their A Level Examinations over the next couple of weeks. On Thursday, school was a hive of excitement as we hosted the Premier League (football) and ATP (tennis) Barclays trophies. There was an opportunity to get a photo with these priceless trophies and Barclays kindly provided some lovely gifts and mementoes. I’m not sure who was most excited during the day - the staff or the students! Year 7s went on an Art trip to the National Art Centre to view the Issey Miyake Exhibition on Wednesday. Miyake is a fashion designer who makes clothing with unique and new materials. Over the years, he has endlessly kept creating clothing that are so inventive, so subtle and considered! The highlight of this special exhibition was the demonstration of the 'pleats' machine. Students had the opportunity to observe a pleated garment being made in 30 minutes, an insight into how his signature pieces are created. During the visit, students completed several sketches of their favourite pieces paying careful attention to the material, texture and the form of each garment. Some students combined design ideas to come up with their own Miyake inspired dresses. An inspirational morning for our Year 7 students and worth a visit if anyone hasn't been yet!

Year 8s have been on a Japanese trip today seeing how rice is planted in Kawagana Prefecture. It was a muddy but fulfilling trip and they enjoyed glorious weather. There are some lovely images on our Secondary Twitter page where you can see them hard at work! Good luck to all of our Futsal players this weekend who have their annual tournament here on the Showa Campus - do come down and show your support. I hope you all have a lovely weekend which starts off tonight at the PTA end of term party. Brian Platts Head of Secondary https://twitter.com/bst_secondary

PRIMARY NEWS

Dear Parents I hope you enjoyed the mini half term break. Unfortunately it is now time to share the news of Primary staff leaving BST at the end of term.

Clare Simmons joined BST in 2011 and over the past five years has taught in both Year 1 and Year 4. Clare's boundless energy and humour will be greatly missed and I know the children and families who have enjoyed Clare's deep commitment to her classes will want to join me in wishing her well with her move, which is indeed a very exciting and intrepid move! Clare and her husband will be fulfilling a long held dream to undertake a long distance drive by returning to the UK from Japan by car! It will take them at least a year - with a few scenic detours on route,

and we wish them a safe and inspiring trip. If you would like to follow their journey you can do so through their website (http://www.fromewardbound.com/) which already outlines some of their preparation on this side of the world.

Holly White joined our team four years ago and has been both a Class Teacher and Year Leader in the Nursery. Holly's endless patience and incredible attention to detail for every single child in her care has ensured our youngest learners have enjoyed an excellent start to their education. I am sure you will want to join me in wishing Holly all the best as she enjoys some quality time with her husband and young son as they move back to the UK. Georgette Nummelin joined the music team two years ago to teach music across both Primary and Secondary year groups. Her determination to find and inspire every child's interest in music has been great to see and I know the children have enjoyed the creative, lively and sometimes very loud music lessons! We wish George all the very best as she moves back to the UK and makes decisions on her next steps.

Although Shivon Veal only joined the Music team in January 2016, her vocal and choral skills have had a great impact on our choirs and indeed her own singing voice has been tunefully ringing out of the music rooms! I know the children have enjoyed their music lessons with Shivon and we wish her all the very best with her move to a new music teacher position in Kuala Lumpur.

PRIMARY NEWS CON’TD

Many of you will already know that our Reception Giraffe teacher Sam Sato is expecting a baby in the Autumn. Sam will be leaving us temporarily, taking maternity leave and will be returning to BST next year. I am sure you will want to join me in extending congratulations to Sam and her husband and wishing them luck for the first few months! We will of course have more time later this term to say our farewells but I want to say a huge thank you and wish Clare, Holly, George and Shivon all the very best - please keep in

touch! And good luck to Sam too!

With George and Shivon leaving we have a new Music Teacher joining the team in August - Amanda Cowen. Amanda is joining us from an international school in Bangkok and we look forward to welcoming her to Tokyo and BST.

On a completely different note, yesterday some of our avid football and tennis fans at Showa had an opportunity to see, and have photographs with, the Barclays Premier League and Barclays ATP Trophies. I know many of the staff enjoyed the opportunity as much as the children and I would like to thank Barclays for thinking of the school and offering us such a unique experience. Finally a little reminder, please could those of you with children at Showa remind them that BST students can only use the convenience store directly outside the campus when accompanied by a parent/adult. That shop has unfortunately in the past experienced some shoplifting by BST students and so students are, understandably no longer able to shop there unaccompanied. I hope to see many of you at the PTA End of Term Drinks tonight at Legatos. Have a lovely weekend. Kirsten O’Connor https://twitter.com/OConnor_BST
