Part-time Circulation Assistant

WMU-Cooley Law School Library – Grand Rapids Campus

Under the supervision of the Head of Public Services, the part-time Circulation

Assistant is responsible for assisting Library patrons at the Circulation Desk;

shelving books; assisting with supervising and training student workers in

Circulation procedures and Collection Maintenance; assisting with opening or

closing the Library; conducting searches for missing materials; scheduling

group study room reservations; and loose leaf filing. Performs other duties as

assigned. Hours will vary according to the needs of the Library, and will

involve evening and weekend hours.

Required: Some college course work. Strong customer service orientation.

Excellent attention to detail. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Hours – 10-25 hours per week; weekdays/evenings/weekends depending on

scheduling needs.

Salary – $8.15/hr.

Telecommunications Update:

o Contracts are signed.

Added 13 new libraries on this contract.

o Contracts cover:

AT&T – Physical network – Migrating from OPT-E-MAN to ASE

(AT&T Switched Ethernet)

Merit – Internet

Comcast – Fiber for Milford and Highland, which are outside AT&T’s

territory

o Next step: Site assessment visits with TLN and AT&T field engineer in

February and March.

Some libraries are getting new routers

o New contract starts July 1 with actual switch over occurring in July and

August.

o Angie – It had been put on hold because TLN was going to bid on these

services. But she’ll ask her staff to test as Comprise does have a version 10

available.

o Comprise now has a cloud-based system available too.

o 32 libraries are currently using SAM.

1.3 Announcements & Upcoming Events (Library News)

Farmington is launching Hoopla today. Libraries can place per user limits.

Northville upgraded their printers to be able to handle printing off tax forms for

patrons.

My Reading Log is implementing a Responsive Web Design to make it more

mobile-friendly.

Cisco “Lunch and Learn” events – Security Update – 2/18/2015

Windows Life Cycle:

o Be aware of impending end of support for Windows operating systems.

o Salem-South Lyon is 100% Windows 8.1 on staff and public computers.

They force to desktop but youth computers have touch screens.

Farmington did a “Tech Take Aparts” program for teens which including taking

apart various parts of a computer including keyboard and mouse and printer.

2. Discussion Topics

2.1 Basic/Advanced Competencies

Angie asked if it could be streamlined for directors? It was agreed that a summary

version may be useful.

Michael Shereda said that they use them with staff.

Denise Stefanik said that White Lake uses them as part of staff evaluation.

Can we summarize based for job postings, etc.?

It was suggested that the Advanced Competencies be more summarized. The

current version is probably too lengthy.

A sub-committee was drafted to revise the format of the Basic Competencies.

Members include Sarah, Michael and Denise.

2.2 Possible Future Discussion Topics

The Board of Trustees of the Buchanan (MI) District Library is inviting applications for the position of Director. Buchanan is located in southwest Lower Michigan, where the city proudly proclaims “Life is Better Here”. Located close to the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan, within easy driving distance of Chicago and its big city amenities, just 20 minutes north of the Notre Dame campus in South Bend (IN), Buchanan has all the charms of small town life in a perfect location! The Library serves a population of nearly 11,000, with a budget of $431,000. The 11- member library staff takes pride in providing excellent customer service in a busy and friendly environment. The Library enjoys strong community support and is in the midst of a renovation and fundraising project. JOB SUMMARY: The Head of Public Services has responsibility for supervising and training the Public Services staff, including Youth Services and coordinates the publicity and programming functions of the Branch District Library. The Head of Public Services also acts as a branch manager for the Coldwater Main Branch. This is a full-time, salaried position scheduled for 40 hours per week. The work schedule may include some nights and weekends.

REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree from an ALA accredited college or university in Library and Information Science or equivalent. Experience working in a library setting. Experience managing and supervising staff. Commitment to customer service excellence. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Expertise with computer technology and an understanding of its potentialin providing high quality library services. Ability to organize multiple assignments and work independently. Demonstrated initiative and creative approach to attaining departmental goals. Knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of library service for patrons of all ages.

Additionally, to perform the essential functions of the position, an individual may be required to maintain a physical condition necessary for sitting, walking, and/or standing for long periods of time; lifting or carrying light to moderately heavy objects; operating assigned equipment, including computers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Experience managing and supervising staff in a library setting. Minimum of 5 years library experience.
