About the LASHUP 18
Happy New Year to all!
I’m hoping we have a great 2016 and are able to keep improving and expanding
the Detachment. It takes all of us to have a successful Detachment and I hope I
can count on each and every one of you.
Unfortunately, the Color/Honor Guard will be suspended for a short time until
we can get more members to participate. This is something that I don’t like to do, but it is too stressful to try to find participants for events and I don’t want to
tell someone that our Color Guard will be there when we cannot. We will con-
tinue to have Fallen Marine presentations and I encourage all members to partici-
pate in those. It is the least we can do for a fellow Marine to send him/her off to
meet the Supreme Commandant. In the meantime, we will take any suggestions
on how we can improve participation in the Color/Honor guard so we can get it
going again.
I would also like to see recruitment increase in 2016. I know there are a lot of
members that arm themselves with business cards and applications so they are
prepared in the event they meet a fellow Marine. Keep persistent and if you
have someone that is interested be sure to check in with them and encourage them to come to a meeting. Remember that National is having a contest for
recruitment. At the National Convention in Oklahoma, all the names of new
members recruited in the past year and their sponsors are going to be put into a
hat and the winners will receive a cash prize.
Let’s hope that the worst of the snow if over for the season and I look forward
to seeing you at meetings and events.
Semper Fi,
Evelyn Remines

Greetings Marines,
I'm writing this just before the historic blizzard starts. I hope everyone
is prepared as best they can as befitting a marine. Keep you and your
families safe. I hope to see you soon at our meetings.
See you on Jan. 26th at 1900 hrs

Happy New Year Marines! Thanks to all the members who supported our local Toys For Tots
program here in Harford County. From the feedback I received, it appears the program had another successful
year under the leadership of Local Area Coordinator Gene Wlock.
We had a great 2015. A lot was accomplished as we continued our mission. The future in 2016 looks bright.
We will continue to get out in the community and spread the word about our Marine Corps League. Our
membership continues to hover right under the 100 member mark. This is the year we get (and stay) over the
100 member mark. I challenge every member to redouble their efforts to locate a new member. Remember we
do more than just have one meeting a month. Our programs need volunteer support. That next great
volunteer is just one question away… “Hey Marine, have you heard of the Marine Corps League.” Don’t forget
to keep some of our recruiting business cards handy to pass out. Invite them to a meeting or event as your guest.
It will soon be time to nominate Officers for the 2016-2017 Year. Our current Junior Vice Commandant is not
seeking re-election. This is a great opportunity for a member to step forward and become part of our
Detachment Leadership Team. If you are wary of stepping into a leadership role, there is plenty of training and
mentoring available. The National Professional Development Program can be viewed online or
downloaded to your personal computing device. The Dept of Maryland Leadership College is scheduled for 7
May 2016. For more info on each of these programs visit the Dept website at http://deptofmdmcl.org/ProfDev/
default.htm
We have mentioned this at previous meetings, but ALL of our Members and Associates are welcome to attend
any MCL meeting. The Department of Maryland holds three Meetings a year (plus a Convention). There is a
National Convention each August which rotates around the country each year. There is also the National
Mid-Winter Conference in Falls Church, Virginia coming up 3-5 March 2016. We are geographically close to Falls
Church so it’s a great opportunity to hear from the MCL Leadership, various National Committees and numerous
USMC Leaders. If you want to attend Mid-Winter you must register yourself. See the Semper Fi Magazine for a
Pre-Registration Form. Friday & Saturday are the MCL Meeting’s and they are open to all members/associates.
Ask me, Don Benson or Commandant Evie Remines for more info.
Member input is very important to us. Do you have an idea or program you think the Detachment should get
involved with? Let us know!
Looking forward highly motivating 2016! Yut, Yut!
Semper Fi.

This is my first report as Detachment Chaplain. On January 7th we conducted a service for an unclaimed veteran, Russell Geter. He had no family and lived at Perry Point Medical Center for twelve years. Our detachment lost a member; George Runyon passed away on January 6th. We did his service on January 13th. Several of our members did the casket duty and only two attended the funeral and burial services. We really could use more members to help with these services. Also, I am compiling a list of member’s birthdays; please send me your birth day and month. May God keep all of you in good health.

I have sad duty to report that one of our own has reported to the
Supreme Commandant, George Runyon.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with all the Fallen Marines And their Families, especially those we have recognized since estab-lishing our Fallen Marine Program and all the Marines of the past who have reported to the Supreme Commandant; Rest in Peace Mighty Warriors. We are looking for a Chairman to perform these duties. Donald Benson

We have good participation in the Eagle Scout Good citizenship
Award program. We have 18 detachments in the Department
and of those, 8 are regular participants in the program, including
Harford County, we have attended two this month.
It is a very enjoyable program for receiving notoriety for the
Detachment and Community.

We have supported our deployed troops by collecting 81 phones in the
past month. To date that is over 2361 cell phones. These phones are
sent to a collection point and exchanged for telephone calling cards
which are sent to troops overseas. This enables them to call family and
friends at no cost to them.
If you have collected any phone donations, please be sure to bring them
to the next business meeting.
