JUMP IN WITH BOTH FEET! With school started in August, we are moving rapidly

into the deep waters of Fall schedules! You may have

dipped your toe into school activities in August, but

as parents, grandparents and other family helpers, we

know that in September, all activities resume, and we

must jump in with both feet, to all the wonderful ways

we can live and learn together.

At church, our adult choirs started the end of August,

and children/youth choirs begin in September. Our

Thank God it’s Wednesday suppers begin September

5, but our Wednesday Small Groups won’t begin til

October. Our Adult Sunday School classes start - the

Advocate Mizpah class (Spet. 9 - rm 208) and the new

book study “7” with Hattie & Peggy (Sept. 16 - rm

207). Our administrative and program committees

resume regular meetings, and our youth, UM Women

and UM Men meetings resume as well.

WHY do we do all these things? Well, its both Bibli-

our neighbors! We refuel in small groups, studying

and caring for one another in order to strengthen our

spirits, so we can go out and serve others in the

world! We meet to plan how to grow, use and deploy

our resources best, so we can then send teams out to

be easily depleted if all we did was go out and serve.

And our spirits would rot, if all we did was stay in and

study.

Its about balancing both the right foot of study, and

the left foot of service. We need both feet to jump in,

so we grow balanced, healthy lives, both spiritually

and in service. Our First UMC mission, we say, is to

both explore our faith, and extend Christ’s reach!

We invite you to join some small group this fall,

whether it be one of our choirs (vocal or handbell),

one of our Sunday School classes, one of our ministry

teams, where you will meet regularly with others to

pray, study, sing, or plan ministry; and then, join a minis-

try team to go out and serve and share the Gospel or

other resources! Our UM Women, and UM Men have

both study groups and service opportunities; our youth

groups do as well (including First Fridays and Club 34);

times go out to perform. Our ministry teams both edu-

cate and serve our congregation and the wider commu-

nity, around Reconciling, Health, Environmental Justice

and Special Needs concerns.

Our Wednesday small groups begin in October, and we

have this month of September to enjoy each other with

conversation and games around our TGiW tables. Get

to know your neighbors around the table! Bring your

friends and neighbors to join in this great mid-week fel-

lowship with us! Throughout the fall, we’ll be welcom-

ing our preschool families in for supper with us—

where we care for their children several days each week.

MISSION THANK YOU’S

JULY/AUGUST MONTHLY MISSION PROJECT Thank you to all who dropped off school supply donations. We are grateful to be able to respond to a need in our

community by helping provide students with the supplies needed to kick off their fall schooling. We sent school

supplies to LeaderShop, ChildServ and ELIM.

ASP THANKS! A HUGE thank you to our entire church family for making it possible for our team to head to Leslie County, KY in

July. Our eight-day journey was full of sweat, laughter, tears and hard work… but mostly relationship-building and

SO MUCH love. We are grateful to be a part of a church family that celebrates this awesome service opportunity

with us.

UPCOMING MISSION OPPORTUNITIES

OCTOBER MONTHLY MISSION PROJECT— CROP WALK Save the date for this year’s CROP Walk - Oct. 14, 2018. Our church annually raises a huge percentage of our area

CROP walk’s total funds, but we typically have far fewer walkers (that means we have a few awesome fundraisers!!)

Let’s make this the year that we set records in number of walkers and funds raised from our church! Head to the

website—

www.crophungerwalk.org/lagrange/ to sign up online and/or support someone walking.

ONGOING MISSION PROJECT—ST. BARBARA’S FOOD PANTRY &

END 68 HOURS OF HUNGER FOOD COLLECTION Throughout the year we encourage you to bring non-expired canned goods or boxed items to the church to be

placed in the shopping cart in the church office or by the library. These food staples are offered in the event that

someone comes into the church office in need of food, and/or collected to be taken over to St. Barbara’s food

pantry or up to our End 68 Hours of Hunger pantry on a semi-regular basis.

End 68 Hours of Hunger is program offering a backpack of food to children in two of our area schools who are

identified by their school as “at risk” for not having enough food over the weekend.

MARCH 2019 SPRING BREAK TRIP TO:

HENDERSON SETTLEMENT! We are planning to return to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, KY

next March (24-28, 2019). All ages are welcome on this trip,

although under 17 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Stay tuned for more details, or ask Peggy ([email protected])

or Hattie ([email protected]) questions!

powerfully through all of God’s children, to all in need!

There will be a light lunch following the service in our Fellowship Hall. Rev. Havard and some of

the Inclusive Collective students will share with us then, more about this great campus ministry

and their outreach to the community. Contact Katie Slivovsky, chair, for more information. Rev. Havard

CHURCH NEWS CONTINUED E-GIVING—TRY IT THIS FALL!

We encourage you to try out e-giving with the church to give electronically through your bank or credit card on

scheduled dates that work for you in amounts that you choose. Giving regularly this way helps our church continue

to meet our bills throughout the year. You can find our e-giving icon on our web page, www.fumclg.org Many

earn travel points and other bonuses through using their credit card! You may contact our financial secretary, Sue

Simek, with any questions you have about this by calling our church office at 708.352.1250, ext 235.

IT’S TIME FOR KETCHUP — CATCH UP! As we roll into September, our church finances have got us through the summer, but only by drawing down some

of our prepaid pledges earlier than we would like. We budget our prepaid gifts out into monthly payments, to

help us meet our monthly bills. However, this summer our giving and expenses moved into a shortfall that we had

to meet by using some of our prepaid gifts early.

If you have fallen behind in offering your gifts to God’s work in our church, now would be a great time for catch

up! We have many more programs going on in the fall, and we rely on your giving to meet staff payroll, building

utilities, and the resources for Sunday School, youth group, choir, worship etc. YOUR GIFTS make our ministry

happen—or not. Please do catch up, and help us meet our fall operating budget expenses.

THIS IS IT! THIS FALL WE COMPLETE PAYMENT ON OUR ORGAN RENOVATION! We want to thank again all who have pledged and given, and continue to give to our organ renovation. What a

wonderful year we have had, hearing the beautiful sounds of our “renewed” sanctuary organ! Naomi Rowley, and

now Kevin Wong, are treating us to wonderful music that takes us closer to the heart of God.

We plan to finish payment on the renovation this fall, and ask that you please make your last contributions in the

next month or two, if possible. We have been able to minimize interest payments because many have paid early.

However, we are counting on the rest of us to make our final payments now.

Thank you! thank you! Thank God for you all, and the music that allows our hearts to take wing to God’s heart!

Our future generations will be blessed by your wonderful gift.

COMING SOON! COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR ALZHEIMERS Our Health and Wellness Team has scheduled a congregation “Lunch and Learn,” for Sunday, October 14 after

worship. We will have a speaker from the Alzheimer’s Association to help us learn “Effective Communication

Strategies” for family, friends and caregivers of those living with Alzheimer's. This program should help us learn

new ways to connect and communicate when words are lost. The program is free, but donations will be received

“7” SMALL GROUP

Do you feel trapped in the machine of excess? Are you finding that more isn’t always better? Join Hattie & Peggy

for a 9-week small group study following Jen Hatmaker’s “7: Experimental Mutiny Against Excess.” We’ll gather on

Sunday mornings from 9-10 am, Sept. 16 through Nov. 11, working together to untangle the clutter in our life, fo-

cusing on these seven areas – food, clothes, possessions, media, waste, spending and stress. And, perhaps we’ll

discover how temporarily disengaging from excess can give space for God’s voice to break through. Childcare will

be provided. Please sign-up in advance so we can get you the book (which costs $20) – we’ll talk about the Intro

on Sept. 16! Contact Hattie ([email protected]) or Peggy ([email protected]) for more info.

NEW THIS OCTOBER SUNDAY EVENING WORSHIP!

Are you looking to connect with God through worship but having a hard time making it to our building on Sunday

mornings? We get it, life happens! Join us at 5:30 pm, starting Oct. 7, for a “relaxed traditional” worship experience.

Come as you are (in your jeans or pjs), open to sitting in a circle with folks of all ages. We’ll sing some songs (many

times just accompanied by Hattie on guitar), share joys & concerns, read Scripture and explore the story of a

different person from the Bible each week.
