ASHRAE History of a La Crosse Area Chapter The La Crosse Area Chapter of ASHRAE is celebrating its 44th anniversary in 2015. Since the Chapter was chartered on August 22, 1971, the chapter has been able to accomplish positive changes beneficial to both the Society and local community. Through the years, the La Crosse Area Chapter has played an important role in developing new energy efficient HVAC&R designs and implementing these strategies across all building sectors. The La Crosse Area Chapter of ASHRAE has been greatly involved in the development and application of numerous systems and equipment that utilize energy in the most economical and environmentally acceptable ways. Since the beginning, the La Crosse Area Chapter has achieved many honors and awards. The chapter has had a number of distinguished members. Neil R. Patterson, P.E., was named a “Fellow of the Society” in 1984. He was active in ASHRAE on the national level and was President of ASHRAE in 1993-94. Lee Burgett was installed as the President of the society from 2005-06. We lost Lee Burgett towards the end of 2014. Lee was a great leader who loved the ASHRAE family. We are grateful for his time and profound dedication to the Chapter. Other members named to the rank of Fellow and the year they attained it: Clarence L. Ringquist (1975), Neil Patterson (1994), William J. Landman, P.E. (1988), Floyd C. Hayes (1992), Stephen Trelease (1992), Richard (R.O.) Hunton (1993), Carl Speich (1993), Lee Burgett (1999), Art Hallstrom (2000), and Dennis Stanke (2007). The La Crosse Area Chapter lost one of its first and most dedicated members in 2013. James Ritter served as the Chapter’s 3rd president from 1973-74. In 1983, James Ritter was elected ASHRAE Chapter Historian and would go on to serve in this position for 30 years. He also served as Region VI Historian from 1989-92. Most notably, during his time as the La Crosse Chapter Historian, he earned numerous Gold Ribbons. The Lou Flagg Historical Gold Ribbon Award was approved by the ASHRAE Board of Directors in June 2002 “to recognize a Chapter Gold Ribbon Award winner for compiling information on outstanding historical projects or persons related to HVAC&R.” Since 2010, the chapter and its members have received the following awards listed in the table below. These awards are a reflection of all the hard work and dedication coming from the Chapter’s leaders.

Additionally, in 2013, the chapter hosted the ASHRAE Region VI CRC. Participants from five states made the trip to La Crosse where they enjoyed expert speakers and great company. Susanna Hanson, chair of the event, and a long list of volunteers from the chapter, planned for over a year and worked diligently during the conference to provide a positive experience for the regional members. Recognition of Past Presidents The La Crosse Area ASHRAE Chapter continues to be a viable organization with outstanding interest and participation. This success would not have happened were it not for the dedication of outstanding leaders who contributed their time and effort to make this chapter a model for the rest of the Society.

History of a Company Schneider Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc.

A Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning business was started by Leo Schneider in 1937 at 413 South Third St. in La Crosse, WI. After 61 years in business, a third generation of the family has taken over the helm at Schneider Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. at 413 South Third St. in La Crosse, WI. Former company president Mark Schneider began working for his father – founder Leo Schneider – when he was 15, during summer vacations and holidays. “Now I’m basically a sounding board for them,” Schneider said of his sons, Mark Jr. and Rick. “In the next few years, I’ll be completely out of business.” Today Mark Jr. has been work at the business since he graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1990. Rick graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN in 1991, then worked for Norwest Financial in the Twin Cities before managing Juicy Lucy’s Restaurant for his father and two partners for three years. He has worked at the Heating and Air Conditioning Business since that time. “They both started in the field doing the dirtiest jobs,” the senior Schneider said. “That the way I started – the crawl jobs to get to the old coal and wood furnaces that had to be torn out.” The family’s business may have a new home in the next few years. Early in 1988 Schneider bought Breidel’s Heating and Air Conditioning at N3227 HWY 16 in La Crosse, WI. This offers an opportunity to expand different kinds of markets. In July 1998 the La Crosse company was named runner-up in a nationwide contest for residential heating and Air Conditioning system design for a new home in Onalaska, WI. It won the award in the category of new homes exceeding 6,000 square feet in the contest conducted by the trade magazine contracting business. Schneider said the company has received several other awards through the years, including Distinguished Dealer Award in 1995. The award based on technical and customer service criteria, was presented to 10 of more than 8,000 system dealers nationwide. Schneider has seen a lot of change in his nearly 40 years in the business. In a 1954 Tribune Interview his father Leo quoted a national association as estimating one in five homes would have air conditioning within seven years. “Now probably 99 out of 100 new homes have central air,” said Schneider. “They really started becoming popular in the ‘60s; it started in the ‘50s.” Before that he said “there wasn’t much air conditioning just fans.” There was only one employee when Leo Schneider started the business in 1937. Twenty five years ago there were about 11 employees. Now, there are about 42 employees. Business has been an annual increase. The main reason is our whole outlook on customer satisfaction. We go the extra mile to ensure it.

Rick says, “I enjoy dealing with the people. Trying to come up with solutions to problems people have.” Mark Jr. said, “He enjoys working with builder and contractors to design comfort systems.” The business designs, installs, and services systems for residential and commercial customers. Other services include radon mitigation, carbon monoxide testing, air quality diagnostics and installation of in-floor radiant heating, water heaters and gas fireplaces.

History of a Person James M. Ritter, P.E.

The La Crosse Chapter of ASHRAE lost one of its first and most dedicated members on February 16, 2013. James Michael Ritter was born on January 21, 1931 to Joseph and Thecla (Besl) Ritter. He attended Aquinas High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin and graduated in 1949. In 1951, Ritter was inducted into the U.S. Army Signal Corps and attended basic training at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Upon completion of basic training, he was assigned to radio repair school at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Following radio repair school, Ritter was assigned to a special counter-mortar radar set and sent to Korea in February 1953. Ritter returned to the United States in September 1953 and was honorably discharged shortly thereafter. In 1954, Ritter enrolled in the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse’s pre-engineering course and later transferred to the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1955. In 1958, he graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Ritter started his career as a junior distribution engineer with Northern States Power Company in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In January 1964, he was promoted to the position of sales engineer and transferred to La Crosse, Wisconsin. As a sales engineer, he was involved in the design, installation, and study of energy applications for customers throughout the La Crosse Division. During this time, he became a registered professional engineer (May 1961). In 1988, Ritter retired from Northern States Power Company after 30 years of service. He continued to remain active in engineering societies and clubs until his passing. Ritter’s involvement in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) began in the early 1970’s when he was an instrumental member of the group who planned and organized the La Crosse Chapter of ASHRAE. As part of that planning, a list of proposed members was established – his name was right at the top. On May 31, 1971, Ritter became an official member of the La Crosse Area ASHRAE Chapter. He was elected the La Crosse Chapter’s President-elect for 1972-73, and subsequently President for 1973-74. In 2000, Ritter was made a Life Member of ASHRAE. Ritter continued his involvement in the chapter following his Presidency. He was elected ASHRAE Chapter Historian for 1983-84, and would go on to serve in this position for 30 years. He also served as Region VI Historian for 1989-90, 1990-91, and 1991-92. During his time as the La Crosse Chapter Historian, he earned numerous Gold Ribbons. Ritter was also was awarded the Lou Flagg Historical Gold Ribbon Award in 2003 and 2005 for outstanding historical articles entitled “Reuben N. Trane, History of a Person” and the “History of the Trane Company” respectively. The Lou Flagg Historical Gold Ribbon Award was approved by the ASHRAE Board of Directors in June 2002 “to recognize a Chapter Gold Ribbon Award winner for compiling information on outstanding historical projects or persons related to HVAC&R.” In addition to being active with ASHRAE, Ritter was a member of many other organizations: National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers (WSPE), Tri-State Energy Committee, Northern States Power Engineers-Minneapolis, Past President of Eau Claire Technical Society, Board of Directors for WSPE (three times), Past President of Western Chapter of WSPE, Board of Governors for ASHRAE (two times), Past President of La Crosse Area Chapter of ASHRAE, Member of IES, Secretary of the Board of Gas Examiners, Great Lakes Power Association, Former member of IEEE, and member of the Northern States Power Engineers Association. In 1981, Ritter was awarded the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers – Professional Engineer in Industry award.

On a personal note, Ritter’s son, Kyle Ritter, said his father was a practical person who was always conscious of energy waste. As children, when they would leave the lights on, their father would tell them, “it’s a waste of energy and you can never get it back.” Ritter also employed a unique filing system to store documents and records that the children were not allowed to view. Upon his passing, the children discovered a folder in section “A” that contained numerous awards and accolades which Ritter had received throughout his professional career. This is a testament to a man who wrote of others’ achievements – but kept his own quiet.

History of a Company HSR Associates, Inc. The story of HSR Associates, Inc. starts with a partnership between two architects named Bob Hackner and Harry Schroeder. In the early 1950’s, Hackner left the architectural firm Schubert & Associates to form his own company. He began searching for another architect to join him in this new endeavor. Harry Schroeder, an architect working in the Madison/Milwaukee area, joined Hackner and in 1953, they opened Hackner, Schroeder and Associates in the Rivoli Building in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin. Because the Hackner family was involved in wood crafting used for interior finishes in churches, the majority of the firm’s initial work was in churches. During the 1950s and 1960s, the firm expanded to education, healthcare and municipal work. In the late 1960s, Hackner and Schroeder recruited Roger Roslansky to join the firm. With the firm’s growing success, Roslansky wanted a greater role in the business than Hackner and Schroeder were willing to give up, so Roslansky left shortly thereafter. Recognizing the value of Roslansky, Hackner and Schroeder convinced Roslansky to come back and they put his name on the door. In 1968, Roger Roslansky joined the firm as a partner and the firm’s name changed to Hackner Schroder Roslansky (HSR) Associates, Inc. From the very beginning, HSR Associates, Inc. offered mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) as well as HVAC design and engineering services. In fact, according to Kurt Schroeder, son of Harry Schroeder and current director/chief operating officer at HSR, the company has always been the only firm in the La Crosse area that offers both architectural and engineering services. Today, HSR Associates, Inc. provides its MEP services for a variety of projects, including education, medical, and government jobs. HSR’s more notable projects in recent years have been the expansion of the La Crosse Center, the Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus, and the Black River Memorial Hospital. Another project, the new Gundersen Health System Behavioral Health building in La Crosse, WI (a 52,000 square foot, two-story building), is a good example of HSR’s innovative approach to design and efficiency. Completed in 2013, the project’s goal was to design a hospital that consumed an industry-leading 85 kBtu per square foot per year. HSR’s director of engineering, Jim Tempke, said the new building is consuming only around 60 kBtu per square foot per year, which is half of the national hospital energy consumption benchmark. In addition to energy efficiency, the design of the hospital also takes an advanced approach to staff efficiency by minimizing the distance between frequently used spaces within the building. Throughout the years, HSR Associates, Inc. has prided itself in serving repeat clients. Schroeder said, “There are a number of clients that will say they’ll find someone else to work with, only to come back to HSR after realizing the value HSR provides to its clients.” In addition to retaining clients, HSR also takes great pride in retaining its talented employees. Many HSR employees have been with the firm at least 15 years and many are stockholders and owners of the firm. Interestingly enough, over the last 60 years, HSR has only had 2 people leading the HVAC engineering front— Hugh Boschert and Jim Tempke. Boschert helped establish the La Crosse Area Chapter of ASHRAE in the 1970’s as a member of the initial steering committee. He then continued his service as the first chapter president (1971-72). Boschert retired from HSR as vice president and director of engineering with 36 years of experience in 1990. Jim Tempke, current director of engineering, has been with HSR since 1971. Jim joined ASHRAE while in college at UW-Madison and has been part of the La Crosse Area ASHRAE Chapter Program Committee for over 10 years. The next in line of graduate mechanical engineers at HSR is Jake Beran. Jake graduated from La Crosse

Central High School and UW-Stout before joining HSR in 2008. Jake is currently serving on the La Crosse Area ASHRAE Chapter Board of Governors. Over the last 60 years, HSR services have impacted many clients throughout the region, their employees, and their families. Current president and chief executive officer at HSR, Brad Simonson, said, “HSR recognizes the fact that the true essence of the firm revolves around the success of these families and feels strongly that if HSR can enhance and ensure the success of these families, [we] will be very successful as a firm.” This has been the mission of HSR and has proven to be the cornerstone of the firm. Looking forward, Simonson believes that this vision will carry HSR far into future.
