When I was a child, I remember my family abstaining from eating meat each Friday (not just during Lent). Then, there was a time when the US Catholic Bishops no longer required Catholics to abstain from meat on Fridays. However, it was never the intention that the faithful should ban the practice to abstain from eating meat each Friday. Rather, that each person should freely abstain each Friday as a sign of self-denial, sacrifice, and penance. It is meant as an offering on our part to imitate Christ for his dying as a sacrifice for our sins.

Likewise, Friday should be a day of preparation for Sunday, the day of resurrection. For that reason, Sunday is not counted in the 40 days during season of Lent. Think of those Sundays as mini Easters.!

We are now in the season of Lent and Pope Francis reminds us in his early Lenten message that He (Christ) became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich (2 Cor 8:9). Now, it is our turn to imitate Christ during this season of Lent. It is a call to self-sacrifice, contemplation and reflection. As good Catholics we should remember that Lent is a time of preparation. We can help to prepare by observing the three traditions of Lent by offering prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.!

Remember to fast on Ash Wednesday and abstain from eating meat at least on Fridays as a sign of self-sacrifice. It should also be a remembrance that there are those who are less fortunate than ourselves and go hungry each and every day. As you make that sacrifice, offer your prayers and alms for those who are destitute materially, morally, and spiritually.!

Finally, I want to take this opportunity to thank each of my brother Knights, their families, friends, and parishioners for helping to make our annual Crab Feed (hosted on February 15th) a huge success.!

I especially want to recognize and thank the new chairman, Angelo Mendoza who stepped up and did a splendid job. I wish to thank Chef Richard Curatolo and his kitchen crew; DGK Dylan Pletcher and his crew for decorating and preparing the hall; Frank Zawalick, Vince Neuburger, Dale Yamamoto, and Mike Vasquez for their help with the raffle and prizes. Last but not least, my thanks go to Ron Eck, David Santos, Vern Rosevear, and Jerry Fong for their help cleaning up and tearing down after the event. There are many others who contributed their time, talent and treasure for this event … my most sincere thanks! Without the help of each and every person, we could not have had such a successful dinner. A great time was had by all.!

May all my brother Knights, your families, and your friends have a thoughtful and prayerful journey of Lent. May the almighty God bless you and keep you always close to his heart.!

Sincerely in Christ,!Phil DeLeon!Grand Knight – Mother Seton Council 6922!

Matthew 26:26-30 The Lord's Supper

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the king-dom of my Father.” Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

This meal and the death of Jesus on the cross show us why Jesus came into the world. He so completely identifi ed himself with the Passover--God’s coming into history to free his people--that he became the new Passover, the new Paschal Lamb redeeming the sins of the world. “He took bread ... and the cup fi lled with wine” and changed them into his own Body and Blood. He asked his followers to do what he had done, in remembrance of him. At the Last Supper Christ gives his followers two clear command-ments”--“Love one another as I have love you” and “Do this in remembrance of me.” The Eucharist is Christ’s life-giving and loving presence with his Church, until the end of time. http://www.catholic.net

Let us pray: O loving and kind God, have mercy. Have pity upon me and pardon my sins. Create in me a new, clean heart, O God, fi lled with clean thoughts and right de-sires. I love you Lord above all things, and I long for you in my soul. Amen.
