Volume 2 END OF SUMMER EDITION 2009 Issue 1 Welcome BACK!! The summer vacation is over and our cadets have returned to campus. In early August we welcomed back those cadets invited to Leadership Develop- ment School. On August 24th, 38 new cadets ar- rived and began the traditional new cadet training. The “old” cadets rejoined the Corps on August 30th and everyone started classes on August 31st. The Dean of Academics continues to raise the academic bar with the implemention of a Trimester academic program for this academic year. This change af- fords the opportunity for lengthened class periods where the focus is on depth of learning rather than breadth. Additionally, it enables the various depar- tments the opportunity to offer more electives than were available in he past. To learn more about the benets of the Trimester Program, please visit: www.trimesters.org. Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders Today. NYMA congratulates Ex-Metlife Chairman Robert Benmosche ‘62, on being tapped to oversee the troubled A.I.G. — once the world’s largest insurer. AIG has suffered a groundswell of losses, the ight of customers and employees, and now must make good on the re- payment of a government rescue package that swelled to $182 bil- lion worth of loans through gov- ernment bailout money. On top of this, this NYMA alum must reverse a trend of $100 billion worth of losses stretching back to 2008. Mr. Benmosche is embark- ing upon a task that has burned out four predecessors since trou- ble began to rock this once vener- able institution back in 2005. Mr. Benmosche served as MetLife’s chairman and CEO for eight years and is credited with changing the culture at Metlife over the course of his tenure. He changed the focus to a return on investment rather than largesse, by overseeing the company’s pub- lic offerings and orchestrating an expansion outside North Ameri- ca. Industry insiders and experts alike agree that Mr. Benmosche has the capability and drive to turn A.I.G. around. Mr. Benmosche attended New York Military Academy from 1959 until he graduated in 1962. In 2003, he was designated an Alumnus of Distinction, the Acad- emy’s highest honor given to an alumnus. Congrat- ulations and best wishes from the NYMA family! With support from the Parent’s Auxiliary Sports Booster Club, alumni and friends, NYMA is renovat-ing the Team Lockers in the Alumni Gym. The pur-pose of this effort is to pro-vide our sports teams with locker room that would en-hance their the competitive nature and benefi t both ad-missions and retention. As with any team, equipment and safety is a top priority. With the new lock-er room project, Coach McMillen will be better able to tend to injuries and give our teams a moral boost with a top tier locker room and taping room. This project has been broken into three phases. • Phase one: a new training / taping room

(Completed). (Images right)• Phase two: Renovation of the lockers. Lock-

ers are sold as a set of three or individually. (Lockers will be named with your sponsor-ship.) (Images right)Act now to order your locker by contact-ing the Parents Auxiliary representative, Domingo Ojeda, at [email protected] or Wil-liam Sneath at 845-534-3710 ext 4215, [email protected]. Because of your support NYMA will be able to set the standard and you will inspire a young athlete for life.

• Phase Three: renovation of lockers for coaches and offi cials and administrative spaces, will be undertaken upon completion of phase two.

NYMA Day at the RacesAugust 22, 2209 – New York Military Academy partnered with the New York Racing Association for the Academy’s Day at the Races. This year’s race marked the fi rst in what will be-come an NYMA summer tradition, just as the Saratoga Race Track is a summer destination for millions of Americans. The NYMA Race (pictured right) was the 6th race of the day featuring a $55,000 purse. Guests of the Academy were treat-ed to a V.I.P. section of the Paddock Tent, full access to the Club House, box seats, and were invited to have their picture taken in the Winner’s Circle with the winning jockey. NYMA would like to take this opportunity to thank N.Y.R.A. for their hospitality and we look forward to next summer. Please keep an eye out for updates as the racing season be-gins.

Florida Alumni GatheringJuly 18, 2009 – Alumni from the East Coast of Florida gathered for an elegant evening dinner at the prestigious Private Phillips Point Club by the Breakers in West Palm Beach. The evening was en-joyed by Alumni from the early 40’s to as recent as 2001. The Alumni Offi ce is committed to

building a strong social network for Alumni and their families. We are also looking for your sug-gestions on what type of social events you would like to enjoy. Some suggestions to date are a Football Game, Deep Sea Fishing Trip, and a round of golf at one of Donald Trump’s elite cours-es. Please forward any thoughts to Chris Harley ’84, Director of Alumni Affairs (Charley@NYMA.

org). A special thank you to Peter Ticktin ’64 for mak-ing this Florida event possible. Comments from some of the attend-ees sum up the event:• Jack Serafi n ’66 - “As some of you may have heard, and I hope you did, there was an impromptu

alumni dinner held at a very nice restaurant in West Palm Beach on July 18th. For such an event, on short notice, in West Palm Beach on a Saturday night in the middle of the summer; I thought the turnout was good. What was not present in numbers, was for sure evident in the quality of the attendees (I was there, with beau-tiful ladies on each arm: Helen Castellano on one, and my lovely

wife on the other.) It was a pretty impressive gathering of the usual suspects meaning supporters of our school who are always there and have shown a strong, long term involvement and commit-ment to the academy.”• Donald Grossman MD ’61- “I was very pleased to attend the NYMA dinner. I look forward to supporting NYMA. I have spent many years in the education environment, from high school through residency, and my years at NYMA are the most memora-ble. My wife is new to the NYMA family and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.• Mrs. Helen Castellano- “ I had such a wonderful time I couldn’t stop talking about the event to all of my friends. It was such a spe-cial night to see my little cadets all grown up.”
