This December, thanks to the gift drive organized by Sister Dennis, 450 gifts were donated. Most of these gifts went to Catholic Social Services and to For the Love of Children (FLOC) where impoverished parents could shop for their own children. In addition, 270 hams and canned goods were delivered to the same pantries as a result of the November collection.

alter UPDATE

From the Principal/CEOLourdes Lambert

Dear Families:

I hope this edition of the Knight Times finds you enjoying the season of Advent, and preparing your hearts and homes for the birth of our Savior.

As you receive this, we have finished our exams and completed the first

semester of the 2018-2019 school year. I hope that your child’s semester has been a successful one, and that your family can rest and enjoy one another over the Christmas break.

As you recharge over the holidays, please take time to reflect with your child. The break in semester is a great time to take a deep breath and take stock of where your child is and how we can help him or her be even more successful during the second half of the year. Here are some questions to help guide your conversation:

• What went really well during the first semester?

• If you could change one thing that happened first semester, what would it be?

• Was there something that disappointed you during the first semester? What was it?

• Are your grades reflective of the effort you put into your studies?

• Were you organized enough or do you need help to achieve better organization?

• Do you think you managed your time well? Why or why not?

• How can I help you better manage your time?

• Do you think you would benefit from meeting with your teachers before or after school for extra help?

• Have you taken advantage of our National Honors Society tutors? Should you?

• Are you being sufficiently challenged in your courses?

• What are you looking forward to in the second semester?

• If you had to set one goal for yourself to achieve before the end of the school year, what would it be?

After you have this conversation, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if I can help you or your child improve their experience at our school. It is my honor to help students when they need it.

Please note that the first semester grades will be released on Friday, January 11th. I will notify you when those report cards are emailed to you.

May you enjoy your Christmas break surrounded by those you love and cherish, and may our God continue to bestow His many blessings upon us all in 2019.

Much love and many prayers.Lourdes LambertPrincipal

alter UPDATE First, please accept my apology for missing last month’s update. Between Thanksgiving and the football team’s deep drive into the playoffs, I lost track of deadlines. Here is a quick update on a variety of topics: Alter’s Next Strategic Plan: We have vetted out potential consultants to help build Alter’s next strategic plan and have another set of interviews scheduled with the finalists. Our plan is to have a signed contract in place and work started by the end of January. If all goes according to schedule, the strategic plan launch date will coincide with the beginning of the 2019-20 school year. Next month, I hope to have a timeline and overview of the project to share with the entire Alter Community. Arts Wing Overload: The Alter Community is certainly getting a great return on investment with the Christine Connor / Fred J. Miller Conservatory of the Arts. In the past month, we have attracted a large group of 8th graders and potential Alter transfers who have indicated a strong desire to attend Alter because of the new facility and strength of the entire Arts program. Additionally, the new facility has hosted a musical production by Castle Players, an acoustically perfect performance by both the Marching Knights / Wind Ensemble, speech classes, dance recitals and an amazing art show. It’s amazing when a dream becomes reality! Don’t Assume: “Before you assume, learn. Before you judge, understand. Before you hurt, feel. Before you say, think.” I love this quote because of its strong resonation in my own life. For those that know me, you hear me frequently using this quote with my children, co-workers, parents of the players I have coached, and fellow Trustees. The reason that I bring this up is because not a day goes by that I don’t speak with someone from the Alter community about an “assumption” floating around the “Alter-sphere.” Topics range from teachers, facilities, athletics, internal controls, academics, administration, AlterFest, building a stadium, playing time, etc. I actually don’t mind fielding these questions because it provides an opportunity to clarify, correct – and in rare situations, confirm the assumptions. Whenever possible, I encourage them to speak directly with the person involved in the issue directly and ask questions – don’t just assume. Nothing positive ever comes from assumptions. Sometimes, I hear “it doesn’t do any good because I emailed or called, and nothing happened.” I typically ask three follow-up questions when I get this response: was the purpose of your communication/conversation to just vent or was there a specific request or ask? Second, was the request a realistic one? And third, do you know for a fact that nothing changed or is in the process of being changed? We live in a world where we demand immediate feedback and results. Often, change doesn’t occur overnight because there are processes that need to be modified, steps that need to occur or compliance with Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Decisions are not made in a vacuum, and I can confidently report that every concern from a student, parent or vested stakeholder in Alter is carefully listened to, vetted and considered by our Principal / Head of School, Lourdes Lambert. Have a safe and wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year as we look forward to an amazing 2019. David Homan | Alter Board of Trustees Chairman

From the Guidance OfficeShannon Brown, Kati Fulk, and Teresa Rupper

Happy Advent, Merry Christmas, and a Blessed New Year from all of us in Guidance! With exams behind us and college applications completed for many of you, we hope this coming break will be filled with joyous and relaxing times surrounded by family and friends.

In the midst of celebrating, if you have some down time, Christmas break can provide a wonderful opportunity to begin the college scholarship search. Scholarships, both merit scholarships offered through the school and outside scholarship opportunities, can play a big role in making the best financial decisions regarding college cost. After Christmas break and into the New Year, more scholarships become available. All college scholarships, of which we are aware, are listed on Naviance under the Scholarship tab. Seniors received an email in October with directions on how to access that list. Additionally, there are several scholarships for graduating seniors listed on the Alter website under Academics. https://alterhs.org/academics/scholarships/ Please also note that a particular college’s website may have specific financial aid/scholarship/grant information on their Financial Aid pages.

An integral part of college financing is the completion and filing of the Federal Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA). Please be aware that filing the FAFSA is free and you should never pay a fee to apply. Going to www.fafsa.gov will enable you to complete and submit the FAFSA online. Colleges have various deadlines for submission, so be aware of those dates pertaining to your student’s school(s). If you are having difficulty in completing a part of the FAFSA or have any questions, your student’s potential college is the best resource as they are experts in financial aid.

University Club met in December to discuss career exploration and attendees took a career interest inven-tory. Stay tuned to the daily announcements for more information about upcoming 2019 meeting dates and topics.

UPCOMING TEST DATES:

• Early action appli-cation decisions should be arriving soon. Admission options at this point are to be accepted, de-nied, or deferred to the regular admission pool. A deferral means

that the college is taking a “wait and see” approach to your student’s application. While often meeting the school’s minimum requirements, the student’s appli-cation did not warrant an immediate acceptance. The application will be reviewed again with the regular decision applicants. If your child is in this situation and has new information now to send to the college such as an improved ACT or SAT score or improved semester grades, do so. Providing improved scores or grades may help in the final review of the application.

• It’s scholarship time! Encourage your senior to stop in to the Taylor Center periodically for more informa-tion as new scholarships come available throughout the winter and spring. Currently, there are 9 active scholarships listed under Scholarship Match in your student’s Naviance account. This list contains direct links to the applications, and it is important to note that some applications require letters of recommen-dation and/or a GPA verification from a counselor.

• Additionally, the Dayton Foundation’s Scholarship Connect is an online application website with access to numerous Miami Valley area scholarships. This site opens December 14 and all applications are due March 8, 2019. Please see https://daytonfoundation.org/scholars.html for more details.

• Also, https://www.unigo.com/ , https://www.cappex.com/ and https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/ are na-tional scholarship search engines your son or daugh-ter may wish to explore.

• Finally, check with your employers or any civic/pro-fessional organizations of which you are a member; these groups may offer scholarships for their families.

• Remind your students that I am available to edit scholarship essays

KAIROS 100

Twenty-five years ago, under the leadership of then Campus Minister, Stan Troha, Alter students participated in the school’s first Kairos retreat. Since then, Kairos has gone on to become an essential part of student life at Alter. The senior retreat that allows students to experience faith lived in community has been a formational experience for thousands of Alter

students. The upcoming Kairos Retreat, scheduled for January 29 – February 1 will be Alter’s 100th Kairos. To celebrate, we are inviting all past Kairos leaders to join us for part of the retreat. If you or someone you know was a Kairos leader in the past and would like to participate, please contact me at [email protected].

SAN DAMIANO SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations to Seniors Mark Edsall, Haley Lamb, and Madison Rooney. They are each recipients of the San Damiano Scholarship from Marian University. This prestigious scholarship program allows students from all majors and career paths to connect their faith with their chosen field. The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to their faith throughout high school and a desire to be bring their commitment to live as disciples to their future careers. Several Alter students have won this award over the past years. Mark, Halley and Madison are continuing this great tradition.

ADVENT GIVING

As we continue to prepare for Christmas, our students have truly embraced the season of giving. Over the past several weeks students have brought in gifts for local families as part of the Giving Tree project, collected pajamas for children and families in need, and contributed to the turkey drive to provide meals for many in our community at Christmas. In addition, many teams and clubs have been supporting local charities and some have adopted families for Christmas. The generosity of our students and families has been remarkable again this year.

A LOOK AHEAD TO JANUARY

Our next All-school Mass will be on Wednesday, January 9th at 10:10 at St. Charles. We will be celebrating the Christmas Season. All are welcome to join us. We have a junior retreat coming up in January as well. More information about this will be sent to the participants and their parents right after the new year. Plans are also underway to celebrate Catholic Schools Week the last week of January.

Merry Christmas!

May the coming of our Savior be a source of peace and mercy for us all this Christmas. Many blessings to all our families for a prosperous new year.

UPPER ROOMThis past Wednesday, Alumni John Ruff came to witness his Catholic faith to about 30 students at Upper Room. His topic was, “Choosing Healthy Relationships” and he talked about his own journey of discovering how relationships nurture our faith. Upper Room is a group of students who meet every Wednesday morning at 7:30 am to share and discuss their faith. Miley Azbil starts the morning off with Christian music, followed by a student witness and ending with a group discussion over the witness. Thanks to the leadership of David Switala, Derek Willits, Anna Sciaretti and Miley Azbil, Upper Room continues to grow and thrive. A big thanks to Carleen Suttman, who comes to Alter on Wednesday mornings to provide adult leadership as well. Upper Room is just another example of how our young people are seeking to grow in their faith here at Alter.

pajama dayIt was a day full of pajama giving for our col-lection last week for Catholic Social Services. Just think how many kids will be cozy this Christmas in their new pajamas! Thank you!

LANCERETTESThe Lancies will perform their fabulous Christmas show at the UD basketball game on Dec 22 at 2:00 during half time.

Hockey NewsDespite losing to a very strong St. Xavier team, your Knights had a great weekend of hockey, beating Mason Friday night, and Centerville Saturday.  SR Luke Dinkins scored Alter’s lone goal in Sunday’s loss to St. Xavier.  In the 9-1 win over Mason, FR Spencer Morgan had 3 of Alter’s goals.  The Augustine brothers each had 2 goals, with JR Alt Capt Jack, also having 3 assists, and FR Will having 1assist.  SR Capt Luke Dinkins and SO Tuf Ferguson each had a goal and an assist, and SR Alt Capt Grant Grunder, and FR Preston O’Brien, both contributed an assist.  FR goalie Robert Peterson saved 11/12 SOG, just missing a shut out.

Saturday, the Knights had a very satisfying 6-5 win over a very aggressive Centerville team in overtime.  Luke Dinkins let the Knights with a hat trick and an assist.  Jack Augustine picked up 2 goals, with the 2nd one being the game winner, plus had an assist.  Spencer Morgan added 1G/ 1A, FR Dylan Hayes 2A, and Tuf Ferguson and Will Augustine each had 1A.  Robert Peterson saved  23/28 SOG.  A special thanks to the Hockey Pep Band for playing, SO Annabelle Wildermuth for singing the National Anthem, and to all the students that came out to cheer on the team.  Your spirit helped bring home that win.

School may be going on break, but the hockey team will be busy as ever.  The Knights will be playing in the Mayors Cup Tournament,  December 21st, 22nd, and 23rd.  Friday night we take on Centerville, again, at 7pm, Saturday it’s Troy at 5pm, and Sunday it’s Beavercreek at 11am.  All games are at South Metro.  Centerville will be out for revenge, and Beavercreek always has a strong student showing, so come out and support your Knights and help tip the tide in our favor.

Also on the agenda over break is the Alumni game on the 29th at 630pm at KRC, a January 4th game at South Metro, and Saturday, the 5th, we host Elder at KRC at 430pm.  The team greatly appreciates the student support, so come out to cheer them on.

Happy Holidays, and as always…Go Knights!
