What Secret Purple Wisdom

I have a wonderful bed of ferns on the

north side of my home. One day there will

be a green curl breaking through the soil;

the next day there will be a grand and

elegant frond doing a stately dance in

the breeze. What is it that impels such life,

such growth? The genetic structure, the

soil, the sun, the shade, the warmth, the

light, all these… and yet the life itself:

where does it come from? From where

comes the gurgle of a baby’s first laugh,

the catching of our breath in awe at the

sight of the Milky Way, a puppy’s wild

frolic? Where does all this life, this energy

come from?

It comes from the unseen pulse of the

universe, the life of the world, which is of

course, God. In Acts 17:28, Paul writes, “In

God we live and move and have our

being.” There is no part of us that is

separate from God, no part of ourselves

that is not animated by the very presence

of God. “Bidden or unbidden,” Carl Jung

wrote, “God is with us.” And all we are

called to do is to open our eyes and see.

I thought Luci Shaw’s words might help

our eyes open. The poem is called “What

Secret Purple Wisdom.”

Summer Blessings,

Pastor Hawkins

And moves the worm along in his blind

tunnel?

What secret purple wisdom tells the iris

edges

To unfold in frills? What juiced and

emerald thrill

Urges the sap until the bud resolves

Its tight riddle? What irresistible

command

Unfurls this cloud above this greening

hill

Or one more wave- its spreading foam

and foil-

Across the flats of sand? What minor

thrust

Of energy issues up from humus in a

froth

Of ferns? Delicate as a laser, it filigrees

The snow, the stars. Listen close- What

silver sound

Thaws winter into spring? Speaks

clamor into singing?

Gives love for loneliness? It must be this

Un-terrestrial pulse, deeper than space,

that holds you

In its deep embrace, resounds in your

echo hearts.

-Luci Shaw

HUNGER KNOWS NO SEASON... Sharon Perez, who faithfully takes our

food pantry donations in each month

is reporting that the donation

receptacle has been very light in

recent months. Emmanuel designates

the first Sunday of each month as

Food Pantry Sunday. Please remember to bring some

non-perishable food items and place them in the

receptacle located in the foyer. Our donations go to the

Kettle Moraine Food Pantry which is located just south of

Wales. Thank you.

August Fun!

THE BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS, AUG. 16 It’s our annual outdoor pet blessing! Please bring your fish, your

birds, your hamsters, your rabbits, your dogs and your stuffed

animals to church: the more the merrier! Kris Davidson is bringing

her pony Litla for the kids to ride after worship (thank-you, Kris!!),

and a grand time will be had by all!

AUG. 20, 5:30-8:00PM… EMMANUEL SUMMER FUN NIGHT! Games! Potluck! Good times for all ages! We’re even going to

put the volleyball net up to see who’s middle name should be

Spike... Other outdoor games will also be set up. In addition, for

those adults who aren’t into that type of fun, Dick Hawkins will be

teaching a 45 minute class on New Testament scriptures that

aren’t in our Bible (the Non-Canonical scriptures.) See below for

a description…

THE NON-CANONICAL SCRIPTURES…

These are ancient texts used by the early church that aren’t

found in our Bibles. The earliest years of Christianity were filled

with roiling creativity and passion. Many people wrote versions of

the life of Christ (gospels), texts trying to understand what Christ’s

life, death and resurrection meant (theology), and

encouragement to other believers. These texts were used during

worship services throughout the Christian world. But in the church

controversies of the first through fourth centuries, there had to be

winners and losers as to who was included in the final canon (the

27 books that made it into the New Testament). Over the

centuries, the other non-canonical works fell out of use, and then

were forgotten entirely… until recent archaeological digs.

Needless to say, the theological world was excited when they

discovered this whole new treasure of writings!

Aug. 20 from 7-7:45pm, Dick Hawkins will be giving an

introductory study on these scriptures not found in the Bible.

Come and jump into this whole new world that has been

discovered!

Church School and Adult Bible Study are on summer

hiatus, returning...

Bible Study: September 8th

Church School: September 13th

Adult Fellowship News....

Regular monthly meetings will resume in fellowship hall on

September 8 at 1:00 PM.

AUGUST 11 – ANNUAL PICNIC!! Potluck picnic, 12:00 noon in fellowship hall. Bring a dish to share

and a white elephant prize for bingo. We’ll also be making plans

for the August 29th rummage sale food counter.

Order SCRIP August 2nd Place your orders with Laurie Buckett- they will be

delivered to you the following Sunday. SCRIP cards are available

for purchases of gas, groceries, big-box stores and most anything

you can imagine. You pay face value for the cards and

Emmanuel retains a percentage of each purchase. It’s an easy

way to give the church a financial helping hand!

Pastor Nansi uses gift cards to help out those in need with gas

and groceries ($20 increments), so if you can spare a few more

dollars, don’t forget her Care Fund Ministry...our supply is

diminished.

The Emmanuel UCC Rummage AND

Bake Sale is Coming on

Saturday, August 29th!

The time is drawing close! This is our BIGGEST fundraiser of the

year, so please help in whatever way you are able to. Watch for

a sign-up sheet to be posted soon!

Donate!

Prior to Sunday, August 9th: Place your items in the garage. If

you have items that are delicate or fabric, please place

them under the rectangular tables against the wall on the

Parking lot side in Fellowship Hall for Kristen to deal with.

On or After Sunday, August 9th: Smaller items can be brought

to the last two rooms on the left hand side in the Sunday

School wing. Larger items can be put in the garage.

Baked goods or other homemade items can be delivered

starting Sunday, August 23rd up through the day of the sale.

Use your best judgment on how long they can sit. Please, no

items that need refrigeration and pre-package all items in a

sellable wrapping or container.

We can only accept flat-screened monitors or televisions for

donation. This is because Goodwill and other agencies

have stopped accepting tube style screens and TV’s.

Please no adult clothing other than coats, shoes, purses or

hats.

Sort!

This can be done by anyone at anytime. Just go to the

Sunday School rooms anytime after August 9th and place

any unsorted items by the sign for their categories. If a

category for the item has not been created yet, grab a

piece of paper for a sign and start one.

Price and Display!

Starting on Sunday, August 23rd through Friday, August 28th

masses of wonderful things will need to be brought from the

donation rooms and garage to fellowship hall. They will then

be organized, displayed, and priced for sale.

Sell, sell, sell!

On Saturday the 29th we will need some early risers to come

at 6am and set up.

Shifts beginning at 8am until 4pm will need to be staffed to

sell the items.

Clean-up!

On Monday, August 31st any items remaining after our

blowout “name your price” free-for-all on Sunday the 30th

after church, will need to be packed up for the Charity

truck.

If you have any questions, please contact the sale organizer

Kristen Voskuil at 608-698-0377 or [email protected]. Also

if you have particularly valuable or precious items that you

would want a reserve price to be met before selling or that need

special care, contact Kristen to make arrangements.

Thank you all so much! Kristen

Finding Joy Through Generosity

How does one cultivate a generous

heart? We are not born with generosity.

Think of your youth. In our earliest days

we were quite demanding, needing

much and taking what was given. As we

grew older we learned to share, but, at

times, reluctantly. We gave to get

approval. We shared our possessions so as to join a group. We

donated our money to feel less guilty. We shared our time

because it was expected.

One needs to look at giving, not as an obligation but as an

opportunity. To do this we must first look at the blessings that

God has given us. We aren’t born seeing God’s blessings. It’s

easy to look past all that the Lord gives us and focus on the

negative. Taking inventory of the blessings in our lives sometimes

needs practice. Illnesses, financial hardships, discord and

disappointments crowd our minds and make it difficult to focus

on God’s goodness. Through prayer, God will help us open our

eyes and see the blessings He has bestowed upon us. The

blessing might not be as tangible as money, a nice house or

good health. It could be the ability to keep a house clean or

being good at the work that you do.

Once you realize the many blessings that God has bestowed

upon you, you then can cultivate an attitude of gratitude and

find opportunities to give as a response to God’s love. With

giving, a bonus will follow – you will find yourself more joyful in

your life. Look for chances to share your time, talents or gifts and

gain a generous and joyous heart.

Singing Bowl Here's a way you can say "Thank you for

your service!" Loose change (or maybe a

check) will be collected in the Singing Bowl

for military veterans who use the services of Dry Hootch.

Here are just a few of the many programs offered by Dry

Hootch which is located on busy Brady St in Milwaukee.

-a coffee shop for gathering

-employment workshops

-counseling for PTSD

-music, art , and writing classes

-and volunteer lawyers to help with legal

problems

August is the last month we will be sponsoring Dry Hootch.

Book Collection for Prader-Willi Folks Please check your bookshelves and maybe frequent

some rummage sales for pre-school through high school

books. Social Concerns is collecting them in the big green

tub near the kiosk. The children of the Prader-Willi Homes

of Oconnomowoc will be the recipients. Some of our

congregants work at the homes and will tell you

the children who have this brain-based disorder just love

to read. A mission moment about this syndrome will be

scheduled soon.

Thank you for being such a generous, open-minded,

progressive people!

What We Heard, Saw and Learned At The

53rd Wisconsin UCC Conference:

We thank Marian Speerless and Stephen Turley for representing

Emmanuel at the WI Conference Annual Meeting in Green Lake.

The conference was held at the Green Lake Conference Center,

June 12- 14th. We arrived at noon and attended the Key Note

Speaker address that afternoon by Eric Elnes, Ph.D. Dr. Elnes is an

author, minister, and Internet television host. He said that he

hasn’t been this excited about being a member of the United

Church of Christ in over thirty years. He is excited because he

feels because of our struggles that we are now in the best

position to enter a “wide and wondrous clearing in the heart of

life’s Dark Woods, that some are calling The Great

Convergence”.

We attended the worship and installation of Franz Rigert, our

new Conference Minister.

We learned about CHHSM (Council for Health and Human

Services Ministries). It consists of 73 corporate members and

operates in 363 communities in the United States. CHHSM

provides help to children, youth, families and seniors with

disabilities and mental illness. CHHSM advances healing and

services through the ministries of Jesus Christ.

We attended two workshops. One by Dr.John Whitcomb in private

practice of Functional and Anti-Aging Medicine in Brookfield, WI.

“How We Got Fat (AKA, How to Get Unfat). Very exciting and new

information. (Lots of info. we can share)

“New Wine, New Wineskins: A Turnaround Story” with Pastor Kerri

Parker, McFarland UCC.. With a worship team this church went

from “comfortable internal, to uncomfortable external”. From

“we’ve always done it this way to a messy church”. Furniture for

special needs members, rocking chairs, and recliners. Children

help Pastor Kerri serve communion, they abandoned Sunday

School and they are just now after three years, reinstating

confirmation.

They advocate a “messy church” rather than a perfect one.

Their attendance has improved a great deal. For more info.

[email protected] or Pastor Kerri Parker 608-838-9322

We learned more about UCC’s Outdoor Ministry Camps at Moon

Beach, St. Germain and Pilgrim Center at Ripon. Sometimes

people in need of the ministries of Jesus Christ can be reached

more easily here. There is a program CampAwesome for families

impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorders that operates year

round. Their mantra is Outdoor Ministry Matters. They currently

have a CAMPital Campaign to raise money to IMPROVE, BUILD

AND GROW.

Sunday we voted on the budget of $2,153,327, which passed. It

is only about $1,000 more than last year. Next year UCC’s focus

will be on Social Justice.

Before we left, Stephen and I attended a short Healing Service

by Pastor Franz Rigert, We were anointed with oil, prayed over

and we all sang Amazing Grace. It was very lovely, inspirational

and we did feel physically and mentally – healed!

Thank you for letting us attend this conference. We both felt

very blessed that we belong to United Church of Christ.

Keeping in touch…
