Tough competition, community spirit, a great cause and good fun were all part of the 37th Annual Kalamazoo Klassic, pre-sented in partnership by MRC Industries, Inc. and Kalamazoo Area Runners (KAR). The 2015 Kalamazoo Klassic and Kids’ Klassic were held June 19th and 20th and attracted 1559 regis-tered participants in the combined events. This reflected an increase of nearly 10% over the 2014 participation numbers of 1418. The Kids’ Klassic on Friday evening attracted 431 chil-dren, and Saturday’s 5k and 10k events attracted 1128 partici-pants. Accompanying the 2015 Kalamazoo Klassic were several signifi-cant changes. First, we introduced the new Team Challenge, presented by Rose Street Advisors. Nineteen teams of 3 – 5 run-ners competed in corporate and open divisions in the 5k and 10k run. We also had to make the difficult decision to discontinue the Pump n’ Run. While the event added a unique element to the Kalamazoo Klassic, participation consistently declined over the last few years, with only 32 participating in the 2014 Pump n’ Run. This declining trend, along with logistical challenges in offering the event, factored into the final decision.

Also new for 2015, the 37th Annual Kalamazoo Klassic was en-

dorsed by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health

and Sports and the Michigan Fitness Foundation as a quality

physical activity event through the Pure Michigan FITness Series

endorsement program.

The Pure Michigan FITness Series program endorses local, re-

gional and statewide events that are consistent with the Gover-

nor’s Council and the Michigan Fitness Foundation mission to

promote healthy choices while offering a physical activity event

that is open to all participants, regardless of skill level or age.

The Kalamazoo Klassic leads by example in providing a safe,

healthy physical activity event for Michigan residents.

The 10k also served as the 2015 Road Runners Club of America

(RRCA) Regional Championship Race.

In a very close 10k men’s competition, Brendon Molony won

overall male with a time of 33:12, edging out second place Jor-

dan Benning (33:19) and third place Kyle Mena (33:25). Lauren

MacVicar won overall female with a time of 39:04. Ed Kenny

won 10k Male Masters in 38:47 and Michelle Acton won Female

Masters in 42:27. Doug Gucich won Male Grand Masters

(40:51) and Kathy Griffin won Female Grand Masters (46:59),

and Tom Harbaugh won Male Senior Grand Masters (44:24)

and Shelly Fink won Female Senior Grand Masters (55:11). All

Open, Masters, Grand Masters and Senior Grand Masters win-

ners were RRCA Regional 10k Champions in their respective

divisions.

Executive Director Report—Featured Vol-

unteers—Going the Extra Mile By Joy Mills In the world of the Kalamazoo Area Runners, I have always felt that our volunteer Group Run Directors are the unsung heroes of our organization. When someone agrees to take on that role they are committing to being at the scheduled group run week after week, arranging a course and possibly hydration, commu-nicating with all interested runners, ensuring safety, answering questions about training or providing referrals, and in general promoting a spirit of fun and making sure everyone has fun and feels connected. It can be a fun and demanding position but also very rewarding. Our Battle Creek group runs have welcomed a couple of new Group Run Directors in the past couple of months, including Eric Campbell. In addition to coaching Battle Creek Fast Track, Eric has taken over the Sunday morning run in Battle Creek., and is our Featured Volunteer for the month of June. Please join me in thanking Eric and all of KAR’s Group Run Directors for their commitment and service to our organization year round.

Eric Campbell—KAR in BC Fast Track Coach and Sunday Morning Group Run Director

Eric Campbell is a Civil Engineer Technician for The City of Bat-tle Creek. He oversees the road resurfacing projects and side-walk projects. If its pot holes, its not Eric! That’s a different de-partment!

Eric states that “I was always been athletic growing up and was involved in lots of sports, but was never a runner. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 16. I found it very difficult to manage my blood sugar and participate competitively in sports, so as I got older I started to gain weight. I got a wake up call one day in 2007 at the doctor when we were going over my labs. He told me they weren’t good and I needed to make a change in my life style. I started on the insulin pump and began going back to the gym. I started to lose weight and feel better. I hit a plateau on 2012 at about 220lbs. I started at 273. I decided to sign up for a 5k, not really having any idea what a 5k was. The race was The Jingle Bell run in Portage, and it was in November. I had a few months to train and set a goal to finish under 30 minutes. I was so nervous at the start of the race that I went out way to fast, as a lot of runners do! I settled in after the first mile and was pretty consistent until the end. I finished at 23:46, and was second in my age group. I was hooked from then on. I have gone on to do several 5k/10ks, a handful of half marathons, 2 full marathons, and 2 ultra mara-thon, and have lost 100lbs. I am a part of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation running team, so I raise money along with running marathons.”

This year Eric plans to run at least 3 more marathons and raise money that will go to help find a cure for diabetes. His short term goal in running is to try to Boston Qualify in Chicago this October. His long term goals are to run marathons in all 50 states, and to run the Great Wall Marathon.

Eric is married to Ashley and has an 11 year old son, Brendan, and a 2 year old son Conner. They are very supportive and come to as many races as possible and are always the first ones at the finish line to congratulate him. When asked why she volunteers for KAR, Eric says “Volunteering for KAR is very rewarding. My favorite part is getting to watch runners progress and reach their goals.” Eric describes his role on with Battle Creek Fast Track as fol-lows: “My primary duties so far have been a speed work coach for Fast Track in BC, and Sunday run leader. The fast track volunteering is great as many runners have benefited from it and set PR's this June. It has also helped me become a faster and more

aware runner.” When asked what advice he would give to others interested in volunteering for KAR, Eric says “I would recommend vol-unteering for KAR to anyone! It is a great experience and the running community is a growing family here in BC.”

Another Runner’s Perspective—A Com-munity Celebration "Everyone is a star and deserves the right to twinkle" --- Marilyn Monroe Volunteers and representatives from local businesses and or-ganizations work like a small army of ants erecting tables and hanging up banners around the outer edge of the track and foot-ball field on the campus of Harper Creek High School. A silent buzz hovers over the stadium with an occasional blast erupting from the surrounding speakers as workers test the audio for the upcoming festivities. Rays of sun peek through the clouds and humidity saturates the atmosphere. Dark skies gravitate from the south and an occasional gust of wind reminds all of us that Mother Nature officially has the final say as to whether or not this 5K run will go as scheduled, be delayed or canceled alto-gether. With each signal from the skies there is no doubt a col-lective prayer for the predicted thunderstorms to hold off for another four hours. Although the volunteers on sight represent a scene of activity, a quiet presence remains. This lull will change in the next hour or so as coaches and girls from Calhoun County's Girls on the Run (GOTR) chapter along with relatives, friends and community members will gather to culminate an-other season of GOTR with a 5K celebration. In years past I have served as a buddy runner for GOTR partici-pants from Wattles Park Elementary School. This year however

I signed on to volunteer at the Kalamazoo Area Runner's booth. We are supplied with hundreds of laminated stars that will serve as reminders of the confidence that these young ladies have gained and the citizenship skills cultivated through the GOTR curriculum. Each girl is encouraged to write on her star the ways in which she shines as an individual. The stars are then pinned to their shirts as they proceed on to other pre-race activi-ties before making their way to the football field as their 5K jour-ney draws closer and closer. Business begins slow at our booth but gradually picks up as bus loads full of GOTR participants from throughout Calhoun County invade the football stadium . The party appears to be underway. As these young girls continue to filter through the gate the en-ergy level multiplies. Music amplifies from the PA system, laughter fills the air and smiles decorate the faces of more than 600 third through eighth grade girls. Serving as MC, Harper Creek School's maintenance supervisor, Jim Robinson holds a microphone, wandering around the football field interviewing girls as they speak of their goals, thank their coaches and share their stories with pride seeping from their voices. Some dance and perform cartwheels in the staging area with no concerns of burning off too much energy before the run officially begins. The emotions that these girls are conveying run the gamut. Some are nervous, many excited while others find it difficult to contain the restless energy rooted deep inside of their body and soul. Activity at the KAR table outside of the Southwest corner of the track ceases as winds begin to gust and light showers join the party. With thirty minutes remaining until the first wave of runners circle the track and head out onto the high school cam-pus the drops of rain don't seem to dampen the spirits of those going through pre-race warm ups on the turf. The excitement created by each girl personalizing their yellow shining star be-gins to fade as I anticipate the main course of this GOTR gala, the 5K run. Twenty minutes later the playing of the national an-them commences and Mother Nature provides us with a gift as the clouds part and the sun joins the jubilee. Temperatures rise and humidity levels make things a bit uncomfortable for a run, but the sunshine just a few minutes before the run begins, pro-vides the perfect backdrop. I take my place beside the fence along the final turn on the track two tenths of a mile into the run. Runners are sent out in five different waves. For athletes at such a tender and inexperienced age, pacing for a run of this distance can be a difficult concept to understand. From my vantage point, less than a quarter of a mile into this 3.1 mile run, I am able to witness a variety of paces. There are those plodding along at a conservative jog. Others are already walking either conserving their energy or having spent it too early with a hundred meter sprint. Many are alternating between short sprints and slow walking intervals to slow their breathing. Shouts of encouragement can be heard from around the track as runners feed off the energy of the

spectators while also returning the favor right back to the spec-tators. Fifteen minutes later the final wave of runners has made the final turn of the track, as they run through the gate onto the campus where the race truly begins. I decide to join the crowd of spectators lining the gated off tun-nel where runners will soon return to the track for the final sprint. The focus of this run centers on the almost 700 GOTR members but is open to anyone in the community. The first run-ner appears and others follow in the next fifteen minutes indi-vidually and in small groups. Finally the waves of runners begin to flow through the gate and the emotions that illustrate the im-pact of GOTR are displayed on center stage. Shouts of encour-agement, smiles, looks of exhaustion, faces painted with deter-mination and bodies dripping with sweat tell the story of the past four months of training and learning culminating in this moment. The focus of GOTR has always been and will always be about preparing pre-adolescence girls for the world that lies ahead of them in their teenage years on through adulthood. Lessons cen-ter around being confident in one's abilities and making deci-sions that will have a positive impact in the life of each girl in route to becoming a productive member of our society. These young ladies will be our future moms, doctors, lawyers, teachers, police officers and firefighters. Perhaps GOTR will provide the first female President of the USA. Running is not the focus of GOTR but hopefully what these girls gain from training for and completing a 5K run will reinforce lessons of goal setting, stick-ing to a plan, being patient and not giving up when things get difficult. Although the focus is and always will be about impacting young girls in a positive way, anyone who was present at the Calhoun County GOTR 2015 edition witnessed one of the bi-products of GOTR. The culminating 5K run each season has turned into a community party of sorts. Parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers and other community members where there to embrace this event as runners, volunteers or spectators. It always has been and continues to be a true community wide party as we celebrate together what the girls have learned, what they have accomplished and how they have grown. As I walked through the football field that night searching for team Wattles Park the signs of the greatness of this event were surrounding me. Stories of excitement and pride could be heard over the PA system as event MC, Jim Robinson provided the perfect commentary to go along with each story. Smiles, hugs and high fives were being dished out from side line to side line as runners refueled with water, cookies, bananas and Gatorade. Perhaps the picture that bests illustrates what GOTR is about could have been snapped as I walked out of the stadium and into the parking lot. A young lady and her mom shared a hug with

Life in the Fast Lane

"Life is a positive-sum game. Everyone from the gold medalist to the last finisher can rejoice in a personal victory." - George Sheehan

For many of us who are a part of the running revolution, the

sport has blessed us with experiences and opportunities that

would have been unknown to us if it were not for running. Life-

long friendships are begin and are molded on training routes,

tracks and race courses. Landmarks and cities are visited via

destination races. Trophies, medals, hardware and race bibs are

earned with each telling a chapter in our personal running jour-

neys. Perhaps more importantly than any of these blessings be-

stowed upon us from running is the pride created as we each

raise our physical and mental ceiling. Running can change our

lives in profound ways topping our priority list. For this month's

featured runner, Ken Brooks, running has offered some of the

same basic opportunities and experiences that are common to

the masses of the running community but for Ken it goes beyond

this. Ken has become one of the fastest runners in our area over

the last decade. His performances on race courses in this time

frame have raised the bar for him. Ken is a member of the pro-

fessional athlete community, with part of his income being gen-

erated as a runner. Running has not made Ken a millionaire but

it remains part of his day to day job. Ken's start to running was

not all glory however. Few would have predicted his current

status as a runner.

Like many in our sport, Ken ran in high school, went on hiatus and returned later on in life. " I ran high school cross country for a few years, and ran my first mara-thon in 2002., but I didn’t really get into distance run-ning until 2006 because I wanted to lose weight. At one point I weighed over 250lbs. I lost roughly 100lbs running and racing. I’ve been running year round ever since. " When you look at Ken's accomplishments in running it is difficult to comprehend that less than a decade ago he topped the scales at 250 pounds. Ken's resume is impressive, including several Roadrunners of America championships.

In 2008 he placed 5th overall at the 5K distance in the state of

Michigan and was the Michigan Regional 10K Runner-Up. Two

years later he took his talents to Tennessee claiming title of

champion in the half marathon. Four years after finishing 5th at

the 5K distance in Michigan he raised his stock coming in 3rd

place at the 3.1 mile distance in his home state in 2012. A year

later he placed 4th in the Michigan Regional 10K distance. Last

year he claimed the 7th fastest time in Michigan at the 5K dis-

tance and was the 10K runner up. Ken's PRs for these distances

include 15:56 for the 5K and 33:30 for the 10K.

Although Ken has fared well at the shorter distances it seems that he has found his niche at the marathon distance. His best marathon is 2:38:48 with a goal of going under 2:37 this fall. To date Ken has run 63 marathons and would like to hit the 100 marathon mark in the near future. Long term he wants to hit the 250 marathon plateau. Ken is a member of Marathonpac-

ing.com, a professional national marathon pacing group, provid-

ing him with money for travel, gear, food , lodging, entry fees, as

well as other amenities that races might provide. Ken has paced

over forty half marathons, 25ks and marathons.

Although Ken's income as a runner is supplemented through

Marathonpacing.com this is not his only source of running re-

lated income. "I am a distance running coach through a

small privately owned business, Brooks-The Training

Edge." With a last name of Brooks, Ken must have been des-

tined to be a professional runner.

Although Ken draws a paycheck from running this is not enough

to pay all of the bills " I also work at Tempo Vino Winery

as an assistant vintner and Lowe’s as a sales special-

ist. I am a professional pacer through marathonpac-

ing.com. I’m a nurse by trade but will be going back to

school shortly to pursue a mechanical engineering de-

gree."

I have only touched on a few of the accomplishments and accolades from Ken's running resume but

this list could go on . Having a runner of Ken's ability as a member of our local running club and

running community is a blessing and benefit for us all. The awareness and notoriety that Ken

brings to the Kalamazoo area is just another feather in the cap for the Kalamazoo Area Runners,

Michigan's largest running club. Don't let Ken's accomplishments and prestige intimidate you and

fool you however. Deep down he is just like any of us possessing a humble attitude while at the

same time embracing running and the community of runners surrounding him.

Ken's speed as a runner is an integral chapter in his running story but in my eyes what defines him is a runner is his attention to run amongst all of us and give back to the running community. Hav-ing paced more than forty races, Ken has created a lasting impact for many of his peers. Running competitively has placed Ken on a pedestal of sorts, landing him a spot on the running map. He enjoys this aspect of running but finds running as a pacer the be even more rewarding. ”Running competitively is much more demanding and I am way more focused on my training. There is nothing like having everything come together and getting a new PR or win-ning a race especially after you've made so many sacrifices along the way. Although I enjoy training and pushing myself competitively, I find more reward as a pacer. Pacing marathons also happens to help with my training at times as it becomes a glorified long run with all the amenities. I have paced anywhere from 2:58-3:25 over the years. It's extremely rewarding in that you are helping people literally achieve their dreams. I've had runners tell me that I've changed their lives because they qualified for Boston while running with me. To have such a significant impact on people over a 3 hour journey is mind boggling. Runners are so thankful and they show their gratitude by giving you their feedback in high-fives, hugs, and tears. I've even received e-mails and Facebook messages, even friend requests, from runners following their positive race experience." Although I have not paced nearly as many races as Ken I have paced a few. I echo his sentiments in the rewards that come with pacing. If you are an experienced runner, I encourage you to give pacing a try.

Helping others achieve their goals is just one of the things that Ken enjoys about running. "I like traveling to new cities and getting the opportunity to see new places. I like the feel-ing of accomplishment every time I finish as well as helping others achieve their goals. I like the continual challenge of running and the ability to set goals to work towards".

Running is not all glory however. " I dislike being cold at the start of a race, feeling sore all of the time, and chaffing. Running requires a lot of sacrifices but in the end it’s totally worth it."

Childhood memories of his father running are at the root of Ken's running story. "One of my ear-liest memories was of my dad who ran the New York City Marathon in 1986. As a kid I thought it was so cool that my dad traveled to one of the biggest cities in the world to run a monster of a distance. I knew it was in my blood after that point to be able to run marathons."

Ken offers advice to his peers that involves a mixture of reflection, thinking and taking what run-

ning gives you. "Find what speaks to you as a runner. Training can become monotonous so take

what you can and encompass what you love about running because it is different for everyone.

Take time to reflect on yourself, your training, and your personal accomplishments even if you

don’t have hardware (ie., finisher’s medal, trophy, plaque, etc.) to show for it. Take away

something new from your training every day. I tell many runners that running can be a process of learning to make something that is uncomfortable, comfortable. One of my favorite pacing mantras is “Don’t think, just run.” Ken's ability to compete and run at such a high level while avoiding major injury is something that we can all learn from. " I have learned enough about my body from all of my training to know when I need to back off and when to push myself. I do get the occasional ache and pain and the rare in-jury but that is just a normal part of training. Learning from injuries and how to come back stronger and smarter is a big part of running. "

Ken has been blessed with what the pinnacle of running has to offer but it seems he has enjoyed the more common experiences and opportunities as much as if not more than these elite experiences. Beginning anew as a runner after plummeting to 250 pounds seems to me to be at the heart of his running story. Running helped him to shed 100 pounds, benefitting him more than any 5K cham-pionship or marathon victory. His willingness to balance his elite status while also being a part of the every day runner illustrates the nature of the running community. After all we are all runners regardless of our pace.

Everyone has a story. Stay tuned next month for another runner’s story.
