From the President
Overcoming Adversity: When Things Go Wrong on the
Run
Completing a marathon, or truly a race of any distance, is a
rewarding and exhilarating experience. The feeling of joy and
accomplishment as you cross the finish line, whether the first or
hundredth race, is something to be savored and embraced. It is a
time of celebration and achievement. This is the experience
everyone envisions as they toe the starting line, but what happens
when things go wrong, sometimes even tragically wrong.
The last time I ran the Chicago Marathon was in 2006. It was a
cold, damp, windy day, with temperatures hovering around 39

degrees. As we waited in the starting corrals, many of us were
appropriately decked out in trash bags to ward off the light mist
falling that morning. Throwaway shirts kept us warm underneath
(which I ended up tossing at about 11 miles) A little under 3
hours and 18 minutes after the start, I crossed the finish line, and
navigated through the crowds seeking out the warmth of the team
tent. The last 3 miles of the marathon were straight into a strong
headwind, and I found myself shivering almost immediately upon
stopping. Once in the heated tent I changed into several layers of
warm dry clothes, drank a hot beverage, yet was still unable to stop
shaking. I had signed up for a post marathon massage earlier,
and as I climbed on the table, the therapists knew immediately
something was wrong and called for assistance. I had become
hypothermic. Several people gathered around and started working
to warm my core. They then moved me to an ambulance, wrapped
in warm blankets, where I stayed until the shivering had ceased.
Last, I was transported to a warming tent and then finally released
to return to the Congress Hotel, a short walk across the street. I
wasn’t the only hypothermic finisher that morning; I shared the
ambulance and warming tent with several others who experienced
the same. The conditions; the low temperatures, dampness, and
wind, especially at the tail end of the marathon when fatigue sets
in, combined to form the perfect cocktail for hypothermia.
Despite its less than ideal conditions, the 2006 Chicago Marathon
was nothing in comparison to the events that transpired the
following year. October 8, 2007 was a day that went down in
Chicago Marathon history for its extreme heat index. With
temperatures at 88 degrees and high humidity, officials decided to
close the course 3 ½ hours into the marathon. Aid stations ran
out of hydration (a phenomenon that organizers have since
remedied for future years), Forty-nine runners (including one of
our KAR members) were transported to the hospital. Thirty-five
year old Chad Schieber from Midland Michigan collapsed while
running on the South Side and was pronounced dead at the
hospital. Many of our members remember the day and it was
evident how impacted they were as they shared their accounts with
us from that fateful day in Chicago. Here are a few of them:
Many of you have called or e-mailed; wondering how I
managed through the heat and humidity in Chicago on
Sunday… …...so I just wanted to let all of you know that
although it was the hardest marathon to date for me……I did
finish safe and sound before they officially closed the course. I
started the race realistically knowing I wouldn’t even be close
to my usually times; so I thought I would take it easy and just

have a “fun race”; I set my sites on just finishing with out:
#1)cramping, #2) puking, and #3) passing out
I’m happy to report my MISSION was ACCOMPLISHED
(well…not the fun part…). I adjusted to the heat and humidity
the best I could, listened to my body, slowed my pace , made
sure I hydrated and kept my body as cool as I possibly could…
but the humidity is no friend of mine even when I’m at rest so it
had already taken its toll on me by mile 4. My pace seemed to
slow more and more as I passed each mile marker.……As I was
running (well shuffling towards the end…) I obviously had
more “thinking” time than I usually do; I tried to push out the
negative thoughts and replaced them with positive thoughts of
all of my friends and family (all of you)…. which REALLY
helped me preserver and make it to that finish line!!!! Although
I went through a sea of emotions during the marathon;
including coming to a definite decision that this was absolutely
going to be my very last marathon; by 2:30 in the afternoon I
was already talking to my family about coming back and
running Chicago 2008. (Good thing I’m indecisive!!!!) I know
some of you who don’t run think I’m CRAZY INSANE (which I
am ….) but at the same time, you understand and know that
running is just a part of who I am. I really appreciate that! As
for my fellow marathoners who were pounding the same
sweltering pavement as I was on Sunday…..no matter what
that clock read in Grant Park……you should be very proud!!!
WE will forever share this special bond and you all have my
utmost respect and admiration (plus I felt your pain!) NO
matter what…all of you are special to me and I wanted to
thank you for your ongoing encouragement and support!!
Know that I’m feeling great, recovering fast and already
gearing up for Boston 2008 (40-50 degree weather without a
Nor’easter storm or a heat wave would be very nice!!)
I'm sure you have heard or read much of the news that came
out of the 2007 Chicago Marathon experience. From the "photo
finish" - 1/20 of a second between the first and second place
finisher as well as the formidable heat. Thought you might like
another story to add to your collection. The first half went very
well. The heat really caught up with by mile 18. The last 8
miles were more of a death march than a run. I probably
walked at least 4 miles of last 7 miles. At mile 22 (and four
hours into the marathon) race, the police started shouting out
that the marathon has been cancelled and will be considered as
a fun run; oh boy! Have you ever participated in a Marathon
"Fun Run"? Finished in just under five hours at 4:50. Couldn't
wait to get to the finish line. The race director did the right

thing by "cancelling" the race. During the run, I saw several
runners receiving medical attention. Thought the medical
teams were very responsive, and as I later learned, were very
overwhelmed. Sirens were the norm. That afternoon/evening
at the post-party the race director explained the decision. The
crowd applauded his decision. We understood his
responsibility.
I was one of the UNFORTUNATE ones who DID finish. As I
crossed the line I had the medics catch me because I do NOT
remember the last 2 miles of the race. I stayed in the medic tent
for @4 hours and then they shipped me off to the hospital for
another 4-5 hours because my blood work came back where all
my levels (electrolytes, hemoglobin, potassium, sugar). So, 4 IV
bags, 3 bottles of gatorade and lots of water later, I am at
work! We got home at midnight! Why am I here working? I'm
feeling better a little, but could use rest!
The fate of the 2009 Detroit Marathon two years later couldn’t have
been more unprecedented and unexpected. While Chicago 2007
produced dangerous heat conditions, running conditions race
morning in Detroit were ideal, yet before 9:30am, 3 runners had
collapsed and died within a little over 15 minutes. Thirty-six year
old Daniel Langdon collapsed between the 11 and 12 mile markers,
sixty-five year old Rick Brown 15 minutes later in the same general
vicinity, and twenty-six year-old Jon Fenlon collapsed a minute
later after crossing the finish line of the half marathon, all
apparently of cardiac arrest.
In August of this year, forty-six year-old Mark Wezca of New York
sadly lost his life due to cardiac arrest during the swim leg of
Ironman Louisville.
With the unprecedented growth in endurance events, particularly
the marathon, the odds are that things will occasionally go wrong.
Tragedy can happen anywhere, at any time, and the marathon and
other running races are no exception. According to Men’s Health,
one study indicated that closing roads for marathons actually
prevents more deaths due to traffic accidents, than caused by the
runners participating in them. According to
www.marathonguide.com, approximately 503,000 marathon finish
times were recorded in the United States in 2010. This was nearly
37,000 more finishers than 2009. In 2010, there were an
estimated 483 marathons, 22% more than the 397 from the prior
year.
KAR Members were present at all the endurance events referenced
earlier, but tragedy never struck closer than home or impacted

more of us, than on Saturday, September 17. We all know the odds
are things will sometimes happen at big city marathons fielding
thousands of runners, but no one would have anticipated anything
so tragic happening here, in a local community event in Portage,
Michigan.
The Peacock Strut, a fundraising event for the Portage Community
Center, was celebrating its 27th anniversary, and race morning was
coming together perfectly. Weather conditions were cool and dry,
ideal for running. Participation was up with nearly 200
participants toeing the starting line of the 10k and more than 400
the 5k, scheduled an hour and fifteen minutes later. The chief
concern of organizers, as they made their pre-race announcements,
was the abundance of deer grazing along the Bicentennial Trail.
The 10k had gone off without a hitch, and at 9:15, runners were
lining up, waiting for the start of the 5k. The atmosphere was full of
anticipation and the usual prerace chatter. Like many of the
participants, I had finished the 10k, and was doubling up and
running the 5k. The race started, and a little over 400 runners
made their way down the course which covered sections of Garden,
Lover’s and Romence before spilling onto Bicentennial Trail.
After crossing the 5k finish line at Celery Flats, I stayed in the
vicinity to cheer on the KAR members still coming through. For
what seemed to be a few moments, I had turned away to talk with
several other finishers. KAR member Nikki Gates crossed the
timing mats, grabbed me indicating a man needed help. From that
point on, runners, spectators, and volunteers all seemed to
converge into a scene that was surreal. I ran over and a gentleman
had been pulled to the side of the path, approximately 15 yards from
the finish line. They had just finished checking his breathing and
pulse. He was lifted slightly, placed in a position to begin CPR, and
I saw his face. He didn’t appear to be conscious. It was a moment I
will never forget. A volunteer had already called 911 and was on
the phone giving information. A gentleman, (I don’t know if he
was a spectator, volunteer or runner) began chest compressions,
and race officials began paging medical professionals. Several of
us; runners, volunteers, and spectators started directing runners
quickly through the finish line in an attempt to avoid the scene.
The EMT’s came shortly thereafter, followed by the county medical
officials and the ambulance.
When the EMT’s arrived, we redirected finishers out to Garden
Lane as they crossed the mats, forming a barrier. As the rescue
team worked valiantly in an attempt to save the life of 42 – year-old
Shawn Brown just a few yards behind us, runners were finishing in
front of us, unaware of what was transpiring just a few steps away.
I kept telling myself this can’t really be happening. I wondered if

the man had a family and if they were there. All emotions were
converging. Runners; men, women and children, were celebrating
their individual special moments of accomplishment, many of them
finishing a first 5k or setting a PR, faces glowing as they crossed the
mats. We tried to celebrate their successes with them, high fiving
the children and insulating them from the tragedy occurring behind
us.
The team worked on Shawn Brown, performing CPR for nearly 20
minutes before transporting him to the hospital in the ambulance.
At that point, we knew the probable outcome, yet acceptance of it
was almost unthinkable. We later learned he had a family; a wife
and two young daughters. The Peacock Strut 5k was his first race,
and he had trained during the summer months to prepare for it.
Shawn Brown crossed the finish line, celebrating his special
moment of achievement (one report said he high fived a friend after
crossing), then collapsed. It is a day that will remain on the hearts
and minds of many of us. For those who wish to support the
family, donations may be made in Shawn Brown’s memory to the
Brown Children's Education Fund care of any branch of Fifth
Third Bank.

Featured Member – Randy Middaugh
By Randy Middaugh with introduction by Christen McCool
Randy Middaugh is an inspiration to many of us. His enthusiasm and love of the sport is contagious.
Here is his story:
I was born and raised in Vicksburg and now live in Schoolcraft. I am married to Karen Shearer
Middaugh, and we have four kids, 3 girls and one boy. I am a licensed contractor and self-employed.
I am into classic vehicles and own a 1966 Ford Fairlane. I also am into drag racing as a spectator
now. Maybe someday I will finish my 1964 drag car. I also enjoy cooking for the family.
I was a fast food junky for 20+ years and clogged 5 arteries. After having a quadruple bypass and 3
stents on May 4th of 2004, I decided to become healthy. This led me to take up running starting in
November of 2004. My first 5k race was 1 year and 10 days after my emergency open heart surgery.
Since that time I have run fifty-nine 5k races, two 10ks, one trail half marathon (North Country Trail
Run in Manistee) , and 1 road half marathon (Capital City River Run).
I was a runner in middle school as well as in 9th and 10th grade. In high school I was a quarter miler,
but then I gave up running for a few years. I started running again at age 23, but then life got in the
way. My motivation now is my health, family, and my running family. Between KAR and Epic Crew I
-

have a lot of new family members. My best running memory to date would be the North Country
Trail Run with all the Epic Crew members that were there for my first half marathon. The support
they gave me both in training and during the race was awesome. I look forward to running it again
next year.
I enjoy playing music while running, whether it’s a race or just a training run. You can tell when Ozzy
or Kid Rock comes on because everything gets tuned out and I take off---to a faster pace. While I was
training for my half marathons I was running around 40 miles per week. I will most likely try to stay
at that through the winter in preparation to do the Borgess Full Marathon next year. I set goals and
pick them off one at a time. This year I have reached a few goals, such as my first 10k and 5k race in
the same day (Kalamazoo Klassic). I ran the 5k with my wife as it was her first 5k race. I also ran my
first 22 minute 5k this year as well as my first trail and road half marathons. After that I will set my
sights on the full after saying I would never run a full marathon! However, I would have to say 5k
races are the most fun distance for me as I like to use them for a speed workout.
If I was to give any advice for running I would say start out slow, get hooked up with a running
group, and enjoy what God has put in front of you. Running for me is by far the best stress reliever I
have found. So to finish off this Bio I will say, keep the rubber side down and hit them goals. Happy
running everyone.
Who will be our next KAR Star?
