Turning the calendar to a new year often motivates people to make new resolutions or commitments to different aspects of their lives. Some people make a commitment to better physical health. Others commit to better financial positioning. People take on certain disciplines they believe will enrich their lives in some capacity. These resolutions can prove to be a challenge. I would like to encourage you this New Year to take on the discipline of being a student of Jesus. (This is what it means to be a disciple and follower). More than just being a believer, I challenge you to step-up your “spiritual game” and take on the yoke of the greatest rabbi/teacher the world has ever known. Jesus’ life and ministry on earth was marked by the people who lived under his teaching and lived life alongside of him. These people were his disciples. While plenty of people believed in Jesus, fewer followed him. It was His followers who ultimately changed the world. It has been His followers who have changed the world throughout history. An ALPHA Story By Dana Kloo My favorite part of Alpha is knowing that some people are meeting Jesus for the first time, others are growing in their relationship with him, many are beginning to discuss what they believe and think about why they believe it, and all are connecting with other people in the process. I always look forward to reading the post-Alpha Questionnaires to see what kind of experiences our guests have had on the course. They are inspirational to me. Here are some that I have permission to share. I hope they inspire you to invite some friends to our next Alpha. It’s one of the easiest ways there is to witness to your friends and family. “I attended Alpha to explore the true meaning of Christianity. Before I started the course, my personal faith could be described as dubious, somewhat agnostic, but I really wanted to believe. Attending Alpha has given me hope that God is real.” —Susan

“I had heard that Alpha was a good experience and I was hungry for more knowledge. Before Alpha, I was immature with a desire for more—but slightly in stasis. Alpha helped me recommit to using my gift of intercession. I read Crazy Love at the same time and I think the combination of the two really made me take a hard look at the time I spend with God and recommit.” —Kim

“Before Alpha, I classified myself as a Christian and believe that Jesus came and died for my sins. I did have questions and was interested in learning. Alpha helped me realize that we’re all in the same boat. Even strong Christians have questions and there are no definitive answers to a lot of them.” —Karla

“Before I attended Alpha, I had been attending Community Bible Study for years, but not this year. I feel that my person-al faith was stalled. I had been feeling adrift and disconnected from God and His church community. Alpha reignited my desire to get back into His word seriously and be connected in study with other believers.” —Anonymous

“Before Alpha, my personal faith was growing. I was looking for guidance. I still have questions, but have faith in my Savior, Jesus Christ. Alpha helped me through sharing with our small group and gaining additional perspective on how the Lord is working in all of us. My confidence and spiritual belief system has been strengthened.” —Karl

“Alpha has helped me gain insight into what others think about the Christian life.” —Julie

Alpha is coming! Who will you invite?

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...” — Matthew 28:19 (NIV)

PLC Caring Ministries by Pastor Greg In my articles over the last six months I have written about Stephen Ministry, a one-on-one confidential caregiving ministry (we now have 19 trained Stephen Ministers ready to provide care for people going through challenging life circumstances in which they need extra support). I have also written about GriefShare, a support group for those who find themselves living through the journey of grief because of the loss of a loved one. Both of these ministries will continue on. If you would like to have the support of a Stephen Minister please contact either Jennifer McCardell([email protected]) or myself ([email protected]). GriefShare, a 13-week grief support group, is open to anyone going through the grieving process. Whether you have lost a loved one recently or in the past there are grief issues that arise at various times in our life. The next GriefShare begins on Tuesday, January 13 at 6:30 .

A New Ministry Begins On Wednesday, January 14, a new ministry, GRACE GROUPS, will begin at PLC. Grace Groups are not another small group or Bible study. They have a much different focus. A Grace Group is a small group, and, although not a Bible study, it is a Christian group. There are many of our families, both at PLC and in our surrounding communities, who have a family member who struggles with mental illness. In most cases they struggle in silence. What are we to do when a family member is battling depression? How do we respond when a brother, sister, son, daughter or spouse lives with bipolar disorder? Family Grace Groups offer a safe place of support for family members to come and receive Christian support as they walk the journey of living with mental illness in the family. If you have a family member with mental illness you know this is a long, exhausting road. There is a place for you to receive support. All are welcome to attend. We will meet as a part of PLC’s Life Connections. The evening begins with dinner at 6:00 on Wednesday, January 14 and our meeting will begin at 6:30 and conclude by 8:00. We have these three care ministries: Stephen Ministry – ongoing, one-on-one confidential GriefShare- grief support group, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 13 @ 6:30 pm Grace Group - mental illness support group – begins Wednesday, January 14 @ 6:00. If you know of anyone (PLC member or not) who could benefit from any of these ministries, please pass the word on. If you or someone you know has questions, let’s talk.

Adult Spiritual Formation Out of the Grey Box... by Jane Josephs It’s a new year, and I’m not much into making resolutions, you know? But I do like to think about how I might grow in my knowledge and understanding of the Lord as the new year rolls in!! Did you take your “Spiritual Health Assessment” yet? If not, you can find it in the December 2014 LIGHT or at the Discipleship Kiosk. And, if you did, what’s your plan for growing closer to Jesus this year??? I ‘ve been gathering some new reading material to help me, and am eagerly looking forward to getting started!! So in case you’re interested, here’s what I’ll be reading. Is anyone willing to join me? You’re welcome to stop by the Discipleship Kiosk in the Fellowship Hall to see these books. And you know me, I’d love to chat!!!

Dear friends,

Most of you know that Steve and I are blessed to have a lovely daughter named Laura (Irion). But you might not know that Laura is a featured writer on a web site for parents:

www.entrustedministries.com

She recently shared her testimony, and I thought you might like to read it, too, especially if you have a child who has yet to find his way to Jesus. So, here’s the link—

And don’t forget: Family Series #3 on January 24 at 5:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall

Council News The monthly financials for PLC have returned at the bottom of this page. Going forward, I will be sure to include these summary figures every month. I asked that they not be included in my December article as that coincided with the new Quarterly Treasurers Report. After discussion at the council meeting and hearing feedback from the congregation, we will go back to including the year to date figures at the bottom of my message. The Quarterly Treasurer’s Report will include information at a more detailed level. Thank you for your interest and your comments! PLC is currently working off of a balanced budget that was approved by the congregation at the Annual Meeting in August. While you might assume that monthly giving varies depending upon the number of Sundays in a month and the seasonal and holiday impact, you might not be aware that our expenses also vary throughout the year. The first half of the year tends to be heavier in expenses due to some “big-ticket” programs; this is known by the council and staff and is planned for. We also know that expenses tend to run lighter for the second half of the fiscal year. With this in mind, we actually approach the first half of the year with a projected deficit and make up for it in the second half. Take a look at the last row on the chart below and you will see that our Proposed Margin year-to-date (deficit) is around $51,000. When you look at our Actual Margin year-to-date (deficit), you will see that we are just over $23,000. That is good! With giving on the rise and the commitment from the members of PLC for 2015, we are tracking well. Also of note is the fiscal care that is being taken on the expense side, thank you staff! Another good sign is that we are almost $61,000 ahead in year to date giving compared to last year and $40,000 under spending compare to last year at this same point in time. Thank you all for your commitment to PLC, the growth of this community, the expansion of His kingdom, and most of all, to our Lord and Savior. Blessed to serve, Brent Smith Council President

Thank you to everyone who returned their 2015 Commitment Cards. Your support of PLC through your time, talents, and treasures is greatly appreciated and helps drive our mission and purpose forward as a congregation. If your family has not participated in making your commitment for 2015, please contact the front office for more information. New Year, New Liturgical Setting for 11am Worship The 11am Sunday Morning service continues to be our liturgical worship that connects to the historical church and our Lutheran heritage as a congregation. Many of you enjoy worshiping at this service on a regular basis. Several of you worship from time to time to get your liturgical “fix.” Beginning in January, we will be introducing Setting #1 from our green hymnal, “Lutheran Book of Worship” (Found on page 56 in the front of the hymnal). Traditionally, PLC has utilized Setting #2. By introducing this liturgical setting, it gives us the opportunity to switch settings each year and provides variety and freshness to liturgical worship. Many will recognize this setting, while others will not. Our church musicians and pastors will help worshippers become familiar with this setting and we believe you will enjoy this change once you become familiar with it.

Let’s Pray! A Stepping Stones Workshop for First Graders

January 24 | 7:00-9:00 pm Parents only—childcare is available by reservation) January 25 | 1:00-2:30 p.m.

(1st & 2nd graders & their parents working together)

Register by January 18 by emailing Roseanna at [email protected]. Our prayer life is so important to our relationship with God and the earlier we engage our children in an active prayer life, the more they will rely on their Heavenly Father and come to Him in times of joy, thanksgiving, sorrow, and need! Praying for our children is an important part of our responsibility as parents, too. Yet, we are often so busy meeting the physical needs of our family that we neglect to be aware of God’s presence in the details of living, and we miss out on the benefits of sharing our life with Him. If you are a parent of a first or second grade student, come and spend some time with other parents, learning more about prayer from Pastor Greg. You’ll spend a “fun Saturday night out,” get a terrific dessert, and a great new book to add to your library at home. Then, spend a fun-filled family afternoon together, and take a fresh look at prayer that will last a lifetime.

Performing Arts ...to the 2014 PLC Christmas Chorus and Kingdom Kids Choir for

their beautiful and meaningful music before and during the Christmas season!

...to the Brass Ensemble for adding such flair and joy to Christmas Eve!

...to our Worship and Advent ensembles for their tireless efforts to provide music for all of the Sunday, midweek and special services in December!

...to the special music singers and instrumentalists who shared their talents with so many!

Pip’s Place Every January we transform our Fellowship Hall into a lovely restaurant that we call Pip’s Place. Parent volunteers become waitresses and waiters, hostesses and cashiers. The children get to choose from a special menu which foods they would like to be served. Foods include a sandwich, hot dog, chips, vegetables, fruit, milk, lemonade, and a cookie. They can choose all or just some of the foods listed on their menu. When they are finished, they are presented a bill which is paid to the cashier with a special pretend dollar. They then receive a penny change! It’s loads of fun and the children are learning manners too!

PCP would also like to extend a great big thank you for all your support through donations and prayer for our fundraisers and Community giving programs so far this year: Mixed Bags Fundraiser Restaurant Fundraisers Scrip Gift Cards Thanksgiving Food Drive

Toys for Children Scholastic Books See’s Candy Fundraiser Women’s Dessert Fellowship Raffle

Thank you, thank you! Thank you to the many hostesses and servers that helped make the Women’s Dessert Fellowship a night to remember. Thank you to the Preschool Board, Staff and the Women’s Ministry at PLC for all the help and support in planning this event. Thank you to Jana Alayra for her inspirational message.

PJ Story Day Our 4/5s will be treated to a special story in the midst of special surroundings– all while in their pajamas on January 14th!!

What a blessing it is to partner with PLC! The staff at PCP would like to sincerely thank the members of the congregation for their generous free will offering given at the Thanksgiving service. With that donation we are able to purchase many items that will help our teachers in the classroom including a new CD player, new listening stories, and lots of paint! Thank you for your support!

Honduras Blanket Making January 17, February 21, March 7 | 9 am Thank you to everyone for their flannel and cash donations towards our blankets for the children in the hospital in Honduras. We have sent over 2500 blankets and will continue to cover these little ones with our prayers, love, and warmth. We have used all of our flannel and encourage you to consider a donation. If you wish to purchase fabric, please do not purchase fabric with cats in the pattern as this is a cultural taboo. If you can’t shop but would like to donate, you can indicate a portion of your offering for "Flannel for Honduras." For more info, please email Mary Kay Knock at [email protected].

Beyond Our Walls Are you familiar with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship? InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA, is an evangelical and interdenominational campus ministry and is active on more than 600 college and university campuses nationwide. PLC supports Jerome Mammen, who has served as the area director since 2012, specifically with Bruin Christian Fellowship at UCLA. IVBCF is a multi-ethnic community of students who are seeking to know the full life that Jesus offers. They offer small group communities throughout the dorms and apartments where they study the life of Jesus, the purposes of God, and challenge one another to put their faith into action. To learn more about InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, please visit www.intervarsity.org.

Beyond Our Borders It was over eight years ago that Shawn Plowman made her first missionary trip to Honduras. That was a life changing event that eventually led her to resign from her job of 14 years in order to devote more time to the Honduran ministry. It is amazing where the Holy Spirit will lead you if you follow! For all these years Shawn's ministry has been operating under the umbrella of Medical Support International, which takes a 3% administrative fee out of all monies donated. In March of this year Shawn applied for 501(c)(3) status for Coffee 4 Kids Honduras Inc. After months of waiting, she received notice in November from the the IRS in that Coffee 4 Kids had in fact been granted 501(c)(3) status. It is amazing what God will do when you choose to follow! Congratulations Shawn this monumental achievement and thank you God for your pouring out your blessings to overflowing.

Workers in the Vineyard

Men’s Breakfast Saturday, January 10th 7:30am Conflict is something we all face in relationships. Whether it's in a dating relationship, in our family, work or marriage, the real issue is how we face it. This month at the Men’s Breakfast we'll look at how to deal with conflict in a more healthy way to get the most out of our relationships. Join us as we dig into God's Word to see how He demonstrates to us how to face the conflicts that are going to happen.

Have you been considering going on a mission trip? Hopefully 2015 will be the year you decide to go. Whatever your skill set is, we can use your help. You don’t need to speak Spanish; translators are provided. The more people who come, the more work we can get done, and the more medicines and medical supplies we can bring down. We can spread The Word and save lives. Please pray about joining us on our mission on any of the following dates in 2015: March 6-15, July 3-12, and September 18-27. This is what a sample week typically includes: We arrive on a Friday. Saturday we have a medical brigade in a cardboard village called Rio Blanco. We provide medical care to the children of the village. We also wash the feet of the kids and the seniors of the village. We entertain the kids and pray for each family. Dr. Juan Sorto feels that every medical brigade in Rio Blanco saves the lives of at least five kids. Sunday we go to church at the Ministerio Renuevo, Pastor Jose’s church. Sometimes we go to another church in the evening with Pastor Joel. They are very different church services, but the Holy Spirit is felt very strongly in both. We also get organized for the week on Sunday afternoon. Monday through Friday we work in the hospital. In a normal day we teach VBS in the morning to the kids and in the afternoon we teach VBS to the parents. At the end of the week families get their Bibles. We also hand out beanies, blankets and snacks from the coffee project. We pray for each family and provide as much support as possible. Also, with the monetary donations we receive we buy medicines and other urgent needs; we try to save as many children’s lives as possible. Saturday we do something fun. Lately I have been taking groups to the Caribbean for a swim in the morning and to a rain forest and a waterfall in the afternoon. You can swim by the waterfall and jump from rocks into a pristine river pool. Sunday, we come home bringing a part of Honduras with us, inspired to keep these kids in our hearts. If you read the above information and feel like you have other talents, we can certainly put them to use . Musicians can sing or play instruments to the children in the hospital.

If you like doing drama, you can perform skits for both the adult and children’s VBS. If you are handy, you can help do repairs at the hospital. If you enjoy giving massages, this is a huge blessing to the kids. If you are an artist, come and do art with the kids and parents. If you are a health care professional, let’s set up education for the staff and the parents. If you feel like you have no applicable skills and nothing to offer, you are my favorite missionary! Come and sit by the bed of a sick child, pray with them, hug them and their parents, give them medi-cine when needed, or whatever else is needed to help and comfort that child and their parents. You can even read your favorite Bible verse that has helped you get through a difficult time. Some people have concerns about safety on a mission trip to Honduras. I would like to dispel a few myths. I have been to Honduras 26 times and I have never been in danger. We are very safe. Pastor Jose always has people from his church with us and we only go to safe places. The hospital has either security guards or soldiers providing protection. I have never felt that they were needed, but their presence is definitely felt. We work in the city of San Pedro Sula, the second biggest city in Honduras. Like all big cities, there are sections that you don’t want to visit, so we don’t go to those sections. Every time we have gone to San Pedro Sula, it has been peaceful. It is a city like most cities in the US, where people work and go to school. The distinction is that Honduras is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Because of the poverty in San Pedro Sula, our work is vital to the survival of many kids. I would love to have you as a member of our mission team. As you are making your New Year’s Resolutions, consider coming on a short-term mission to Honduras. It will be a life-changing experience. If you are interested or have additional questions, please contact Shawn Plowman at [email protected]. *Note: You can see pictures from our past two missions on our Facebook page, Coffee 4 Kids Honduras. You can also get more info on our website: www.coffee4kidshonduras.com “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” — Isaiah 6:8

For everything a season

Wanting his sons to learn not to judge too quickly, a man sent each, in turn, on a quest to look at a pear tree far away and report what he saw. The first son went in winter, the second in spring, the third in summer and the fourth in fall. Finally, the father gathered the young men together. “What did you see?” he asked. The first son reported seeing an ugly tree, bent and lifeless. The second disagreed, saying it was budding with fresh new life. The third son reported finding a tree laden with sweet-smelling, beautiful blossoms, while the fourth insisted it drooped with ripe fruit. The father said his sons were all correct, for they’d seen the same tree, though at different seasons of its life. “Don’t judge a tree — or a person — based on just one season of life,” he counseled his children. “Who they are can only be known at the end, when all life’s seasons have been lived. “Furthermore,” he added, “don’t give up on your own life if you experience a hard season, such as winter, or you’ll miss
