Suggested Elements of Worship for Children (Entering Second through Seventh Grades)

Scripture: Each day the unit Bible verse for the week will be read. It is important for children to understand the Scripture and learn how to apply the Bible truths to their everyday life. The unit Bible verse will be reviewed and learned each day in the classroom. Music for Journey Into Worship (worship for children): Music is a powerful medium to use with children. The free, downloadable PowerPoint presentations contain the theme for each day, the unit Bible verse, pledges, mission stories and lyrics to the songs for each day. Music is a powerful medium to use with children. Downloadable music and lyrics videos for all the songs in Journey with Jesus: Following in His Footsteps (2016) are available through God’s Kids Worship. Click on the download's tab, then choose All Songs, then click on each song suggested for worship (see list below). Each song suggested for Journey Into Worship may be inserted in the PowerPoint® presentation by creating a slide that contains the video file. Each downloadable music and lyrics video bundle includes a stereo video, a split-track video, and lyrics PDF file of each song. Additionally, each song is available as a free, full-length rehearsal video, playable on any internet-connected device, with no login or registration required. Select either Windows Media or QuickTime files for the songs to match your playback system. Files are suitable for use in all major presentation software programs. Free compatibility files are available on every page. Check file compatibility before you buy if you are unsure about your system’s requirements. There are no refunds for software downloads. God’s Kids Worship can’t provide follow-up support without being at your location to assess your hardware and software, so no follow-up tech support is offered. You should check your system and perhaps consult with church media people if you are unclear about how to use computer media files. Also available are separate audio file downloads from Amazon or iTunes. Search for God's Kids Worship/digital music then choose each song below to purchase an audio download. The lyrics for each song are included on the PowerPoint® Presentation. Consider using a children's praise team to lead each day. The children would learn the songs prior to VBS by using the free streaming rehearsal video links from God's Kids Worship for each song. Each day, they would stand at the front with the children's minister, minister of music, or other leader to lead in worship. Sign language for key words or appropriate movement could be added to help the children remember the words to the songs.

The suggested songs are: I'll Follow You (Theme Song) A Brand New Me It All Comes Down to Love Let's Get Started There is Someone Without You, Jesus Mission Stories: Missions should be an important part of VBS. A mission story is provided for each session. The mission stories highlight BOUNCE: Student Disaster Recovery. Each day the children will hear stories about students who served on a mission team around the state of Texas to assist people in disaster recovery. The mission story may be told as a part of the corporate worship experience each day and/or as a part of the daily mission activity. Pictures are included on the PowerPoint. Offering: Another element of worship is bringing an offering. Children and parents need to understand that VBS is free and these offerings are not payment for them to attend. The offering may be used for a local mission project, or it may be sent to your state convention office to be used in other mission efforts. Older children can take the offering during the worship time or stand by the exit doors with containers. As the children are dismissed by grade level, they could place their offerings in the container. Create a diagram for each class, showing them which door to use for an exit. This will speed up the exit each day. Pledges: The pledges to the American Flag, Christian Flag, and the Bible are also important elements of VBS worship. Allow children in each grade to hold the flags and the Bible. Prepare a schedule prior to VBS indicating which departments will be responsible for leading the pledges for each day. The children chosen from those departments will meet with the director of VBS early each day to go over instructions about the pledges. Presenting the Plan of Salvation: On Day four, the plan of salvation may be presented to the children. See other suggestions in the worship material for Day 4.

Students travel around Texas to help with disaster recovery. Show the pictures on the PowerPoint while telling the story.

The Story of BOUNCE

Natural disasters are a common occurrence in the United States. Every year communities find themselves dealing with the effects of tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, wildfires, storms, and earthquakes. Disasters are painful, traumatic experiences for local residents. It’s in these times Texas Disaster Recovery volunteers spring into action to assist with recovery efforts. These times also present a significant ministry opportunity for teenagers. That’s right—teenagers! Teens can make powerful ministry contributions through BOUNCE Student Disaster Recovery. They become Christ's hands and feet as they minister to those impacted by disasters. Students have a desire to "make a difference" in the world. In addition to helping with recovery efforts, they also share the Good News of Jesus Christ. 3 "There is Someone," by Martha Bolton & Bob Singleton. © 2009 Agnes Day Music, BMI/Sky Taylor Music, ASCAP. Chris Liebrum, former Director of Texas Baptists Disaster Recovery, had the idea to create BOUNCE. "Since 1990, I had dreamed of providing a way to involve junior high, high school and college students in disaster recovery. Their passion, energy, and strength were a perfect match for the needs you find in a disaster area. In the fall of 2013, God provided a way for Texas Baptist to launch BOUNCE." David Scott, Director of BOUNCE, says the purpose of BOUNCE is three-fold: we want to restore hope, rebuild communities, and reflect Christ. People who have experienced disasters or who have issues with the condition of their homes can often feel hopeless. When we mobilize students to assist them in rebuilding and repairing their homes, it gives them hope. Ultimately we want them to know there is hope in Christ, and we want BOUNCERS to be a reflection of Christ by the way they serve. Since 2014, BOUNCE participants, or BOUNCERS, have done much to help communities "BOUNCE back" after a disaster. In 2015, community rehabilitation projects were added to the schedule. BOUNCERS have done debris removal and cleanup projects, replaced damaged roofs, re-built fences, painted homes, and much more. While completing many projects, BOUNCERS have also most importantly reflected Christ in the communities where they have served. For more information on BOUNCE and to view BOUNCE video, check out www.texasbaptists.org/bounce.

Unexpected Ministry Opportunity When Team Green Volley headed to Miss Lula's home, they thought they were going to minister to her by giving her home a much needed fresh paint job. But, when they arrived at her home, they found another opportunity to minister. Only a few short months before Team Green Volley arrived in Waco, Ms. Robinson's young grandson, Rylan, lost his father after an extended illness. When the team began work early on a Tuesday morning, they met a seven year-old boy still dealing with the sadness of losing his dad. Davis, an 8th grader from Kingwood's First Baptist Church was looking forward to having fun scraping and painting a house during his second year of BOUNCE, but he hadn’t counted on the special connection he would make with Rylan. "We shared some Bible stories with him, and I think we really helped in his recovery." Katy, an 8th Grader from Christoval Baptist Church, was on her first mission trip. She admits she wasn’t too sure if she would like the construction aspect of BOUNCE. However, seeing the faces 7 "Without You, Jesus," words by Martha Bolton, music by Bob Singleton. © 2009 Agnes Day Music, BMI/Sky Taylor Music, ASCAP. CCLI # 5536375

of Miss Lula and Rylan changed her mind. In addition to the hard work the team did on the home, Katy said they were able to give Rylan a Bible and share Bible stories with him. "He really liked the story of David and Goliath." Kay also mentioned she loved her experience and would serve again. Ashlyn, a 9th grader from Woodridge Baptist Church in Kingwood, Texas was excited to help a family improve their home through the ministry of BOUNCE. She helped replace rotten wood on the home, but the opportunity to encourage Rylan was most significant. "In the mornings, he would be looking out the window waiting for us to arrive. His face would light up, and he would come out and hug everyone. It was great being able to give him love and attention." Although the work that Team Volley did on the home was very important, perhaps the most important ministry was spending time with a little boy who needed new friends to encourage him. They came to Waco to paint, but God gave Team Green Volley an opportunity to do much more. Slides 68 - 109: Worship Song "It All Comes Down to Love"11 Slides 110 - 111: Mission Story and Picture Today our mission story is about a hearing-impaired family. When floodwaters came to the San Marcos/Wimberley area, a mother and her son could not hear knocks on their door. Listen how Amy helped. Show the picture of Ms. Adams and her son, Craig as you tell the story.

Use Your Gifts and Abilities Amy served on BOUNCE Collegiate Staff as a Mission Administrative Specialist for two years. Much of her worked was limited to important administrative tasks around the BOUNCE office until her final mission of 2015. It was during the San Marcos/Wimberley Disaster Response mission that Amy was able to use some special abilities to minister to flood victim, Joyce Adams and her son, Craig, both of whom are deaf. On Memorial Day weekend of 2015, heavy rains led to extreme flooding in the San Marcos-Wimberley area. On the night of the flood, when management of their trailer park community knocked on their door to tell them to evacuate, Mrs. Adams and Craig could not hear the knocks at their door. The management assumed they had already evacuated. As the water level rose, the trailer home began to float. At that point Craig awoke and warned his mother. Eventually they were rescued when they signaled to a neighbor on a roof by using a flashlight. 11 "It All Comes Down to Love," by Bob Singleton & Martha Bolton © 2009 Agnes Day Music, BMI/Sky Taylor Music, ASCAP. When BOUNCE arrived in San Marcos to assist home-owners in recovery efforts, Cowboy Fellowship Church of Pleasanton, TX drew the assignment of helping Mrs. Adams and Craig. The students from Cowboy Fellowship were able to insulate the underside of the Adams’ trailer and install new skirting around the trailer. The work was challenging and so was communication with Mrs. Adams. That’s where Amy stepped in with an assist. Amy had two years of sign language training at University of Mary-Hardin Baylor to fulfill her foreign language requirement. With this training, Amy was able to help the team from Cowboy Fellowship communicate with Mrs. Adams. Reflecting on her time with Mrs. Adams, Amy said, "I talked to her a lot. She told me all about her life. Just to be able to sit and use the gifts that God had given me to minister to her, brought so much joy to my heart." Amy’s experience in San Marcos reminds us the gifts, talents, and abilities God gives and develops in us can be used to minister to others. That was the case with Amy. Be prepared to use what God has given you to help others and bring glory to God. Be a Blessing Richard, a resident of the Dove Springs area of south Austin, Texas, had just returned home from a stay in the hospital in October 2013. It was Halloween night, which is usually a fun time for visits from children and candy distribution. However, this particular October 31 would be truly a night of horror for the residents of Dove Springs as Onion Creek left its banks and sent five and one half feet of water into hundreds of home in the community. At approximately 4:00am, Richard woke to the sound of clanging. He swung his feet off of his bed to find his bedroom flooded with two feet of water. He began to try to open exterior doors to escape the rising waters, but the pressure created by the waters was too strong. The water began rushing in at a greater rate. Fortunately for Robert, fire and rescue workers rescued him. Over the next months, Richard would need a great deal of help with his home. But, he received little help, which resulted in a feeling of hopelessness. It was at that point, BOUNCE Student

Disaster Recovery participants, aka. BOUNCERS, in partnership with Austin Meals on Wheels and Rebuilding Together were able to step in to assist. In July of 2014, BOUNCERS were able to give him help with yard cleanup, a new fence, siding, and paint for his home. Richard said what the students did was "amazing." "My pain from the last six months is turning into joy." He continues, "You guys showing up was a major blessing." What a great reminder of what happens when we faithfully serve God. We get to be a blessing to someone else. *Option: At this time, you may decide to share the plan of salvation with the children. Decide which children should remain in the worship center. You may decide that sending children entering second and third grades back to their classes may be best for your situation. A minister or director of that department could share with those children in their classroom. As the younger children leave, lead the other children in singing "I'll Follow You"16. They will give their offerings as they leave. Please refer to Talking to Children about Salvation (pages 17-19 or on the VBS website) for guidance in sharing the plan of salvation with children. After sharing the plan of salvation with the children, ask the children who would like to know more about becoming a Christian to come to the front. It’s better not to offer an invitation because some children will walk down because their friends are coming. Dismiss the classes as you have done each day. The children taking the offering should be at the door. Communicate with the teachers that someone will bring the children who have made decisions back to their room. Make sure to have enough adults to talk to the children at this time and record the decisions so a follow-up visit can take place. Today, as you leave, there will be children at the door with baskets for your offerings. This week the money that you bring each day will be given to _______________. (Explain the ministry to the children so they will understand what their money will help to buy) Prayer Time: Thank you, God, for VBS. Thank you, God, for all the children who came today. Thank you for giving us never-ending life. Help us to know you better. We love you. Amen. Talking to Children about Salvation

Written by: Dr. Tommy Sanders, Vice President for Academic and Graduate Programs at East Texas Baptist University

Marshall, Texas Guiding children to take those first steps toward faith can be the most rewarding opportunity of life for both parents and teachers. The journey toward faith is filled with teachable moments. Influential adults and peers can answer questions, teach biblical truths, model Christian values, and share personal testimonies that further the child’s understanding. The following information will prepare teachers for opportunities to talk with children about salvation. Ask Follow-Up Questions When a child asks a question, often the child does not know exactly what to ask. Get clarification before deciding how to answer the question. For example, you might say, Tell me more about what you are thinking. You may ask questions such as, What made you ask that question? Where did you hear about this? Many times the question a child asks may not be the actual question for which the child needs an answer. Avoid asking questions that can be answered with yes or no. Avoid Giving More Information Than Needed Adults are often tempted to tell all they know on a subject. When a child asks a question, answer only what the child is asking. Listen carefully to the child. If the child asks for more information, be more specific with your answers. Don’t Jump to Conclusions A child may ask, Why did Andy get baptized? This question may be only a request for information, not a request for the gospel presentation. Speak in Clear and Simple Terms Avoid symbolic analogies and “church language” that may distract from discussion and understanding. Common “church language” includes words and phrases children hear only at church, such as “come forward,” “saved,” “everlasting life,” “baptism,” “prayer,” “Holy Spirit,” and “have Jesus come into your heart.” Rather than using the phrase “accepting Jesus into your heart,” say the words “becoming a Christian.” Baptism Baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is a picture of what Jesus did to save us—death, burial, and resurrection. Always make a distinction between baptism and becoming a Christian. Point out that becoming a Christian comes first. Someone is baptized as an outward sign that he or she has already asked Jesus to come into his or her life as Savior and Lord. The person is already a Christian.

What a Child Needs to Know About Salvation

1. God loves you and has a great plan for your life. (Psalm 139:13-16) Talk about these truths: God made the world; God made people; God made you; God wants to have a relationship with you. Say, Tell me one way you know God loves you. 2. We have all sinned. (Romans 3:23) Everyone must understand that he or she is separated from God because of his or her sin. Sin is best understood as choosing to do things our way instead of God’s way. (Give examples of sin, such as disobedience, ungratefulness, and lying.) Ask the child, Have you ever sinned? What does God think about sin? Point out that everyone has sinned. 3. Even though we choose to sin, God still loves us and offers to forgive us. (Romans 5:8) Ask, How do you think it makes God feel when you sin? Focus on the fact that God loves us even when we sin. Say, God promised that a Savior would come who would die for all people. Do you know who that Savior is? Did you know that he died for you? 4. Jesus died for us. (John 3:16) Talk about John 3:16. Explain that because sin separates people from God, everyone needs a Savior. Ask, Do you know why Jesus died? Say, Jesus loves you so much. He willingly died for you so you could be with God forever. If the child is old enough to understand the resurrection, say, Jesus rose from the dead so we can have eternal life. 5. You can become a Christian by confessing you are a sinner and Jesus is your Savior and Lord. (Romans 10:9) Ask, Would you like to be a Christian? Explain that the word “confess” means you must say that you are a sinner and Jesus is your Savior. To become a Christian, you must do these three things: admit you have sinned; believe that Jesus is God’s Son; confess that Jesus is your Savior and Lord. Review and Follow Up Encourage a child to tell you in his or her own words what he or she understands and believes. Either ask the child to repeat a prayer after you or help the child know what to say in his or her own prayer. After the prayer, read Romans 10:13 and remind the child that this verse is a promise. Jesus will be our Savior forever.

The ABCs of Becoming a Christian

A—Admit to God you are a sinner. When you choose to do things your way instead of God’s way, it is sin. Sin separates you from God. All people need to admit to God they have sinned and ask for God’s forgiveness. (1 John 1:9) B—Believe that Jesus is God’s Son and accept God's gift of forgiveness. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin. God loves you so much that God sent his only Son to die for the world and for you. (John 3:16) C—Confess Jesus as your Savior and Lord. When you become a Christian, you are saying that you want God to forgive you and that you want Jesus to be your boss. (Romans 10:9-10) Prayer Say, If you want to talk to God about accepting Jesus as your Savior, no words are better than your own words. If you need a little help, you can pray like this:

God, I know that you love me and have a great plan for my life. I admit I have sinned and chosen to do things my way instead of your way. I believe that Jesus is your Son and that Jesus died for me. Please forgive me of my sin. As of today, Jesus is my Lord and Savior. Amen

Encourage the child to tell his or her parents and Sunday School teacher about asking Jesus to come into his or her life.

Helping West "BOUNCE" Back The city of West, Texas is located approximately 70 miles south of Dallas. It is known for its Czech heritage and delicious Czech cuisine such as kolaches, klobasnek, and strudels. However, on April 17, 2013 it became known for a horrific tragedy – an explosion of the local fertilizer plant that resulted in the loss of 15 lives and approximately one fourth of the homes in the community. Many members of the community immediately began to work together to rebuild homes and lives. By the summer of 2014, the rubble had been cleaned up, and real progress had been made, however, many of the most needy families had not been able to rebuild or repair their homes. Volunteers were needed to help those families. Enter 400 BOUNCERS to assist in recovery efforts. Over a two-week period in June 2014, BOUNCE participants from 16 churches made their way to West to serve together. Youth Minister Matthew Broyles saw value in this kingdom approach to ministry. "We realized we could do more together than we could do apart." BOUNCERS rose

early each morning to roof and paint homes, repair fences, and even frame and dry in a new home. The building projects also led to an opportunity for BOUNCERS to reflect Christ in the community. Gena Hargrove, a student from First Baptist Church Spearman, Texas said, "It’s great to be able to spread the Word of Jesus to people who were driving by and were curious seeing young people building this house." John Crowder, Pastor of West’s First Baptist Church, said, "Our community was thrilled to have them, and the people in West are still talking about the work the BOUNCE kids did while they were here. This is a great group of people who do a great job of serving the Lord by serving people in need." Through their efforts in West, BOUNCERS were able to play a part in helping West BOUNCE back from the tragic events of April 17 by being the hands and feet of Christ in a community in need.
