October 2018 A Jaguar Clubs of North America Affiliate
The Vanderbilt Museum was proud to host the
45th annual Jaguar Drivers Club of Long Island
Invitational Concours d’Elegance on Sunday,
September 16, 2018. The Vanderbilt Museum
consists of numerous beautifully landscaped
acres and provides an unmatched setting for
the display of vintage and modern automobiles
overlooking Northport Harbor and the Long
Island Sound.
The 43-acre waterfront Vanderbilt museum
complex counts among its extensive collections
(which total more than 30,000 objects) the
mansion, curator’s cottage, a seaplane hangar
and boathouse, antique household furnishings,
rare decorative and fine art, the archives and
photographic record of Vanderbilt’s
circumnavigations of the globe, and published
books of his travels.
Vanderbilt realized the potential for his
sprawling estate to become a museum “for the
use, education and enjoyment of the general
public.” He established a trust fund to finance
the operation of the museum and deeded it to
Suffolk County, New York, upon his death in
1944. The county opened the museum to the
public in 1950.
This year’s proceeds from fundraising at the
event went to the local charity Little Shelter.
One of Long Island's oldest no-kill shelters, is
dedicated to saving all companion animals
whose lives are in jeopardy. Through rescue
from kill facilities, rehabilitation of sick and un-
socialized pets, and a 100% spay/neuter
program, Little Shelter hopes to end pet
overpopulation and place all dogs and cats in
loving homes. Little Shelter is also a part of the
Mayor's Alliance for NYC Animals.

Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center is a non-profit, no-kill
animal shelter nestled on six wooded acres in Huntington, Long Island.
Included on the grounds is Sheltervale Pet Cemetery, which has been the
final resting place for companion animals for more than 89 years. All Little
Shelter pets receive the highest quality medical care and are spayed /neutered
before adoption. Every potential adopter is interviewed and thoroughly
screened to ensure the best quality homes.
The picturesque grounds of the Vanderbilt Estate were soon covered with
over 100 vintage Jaguars and many other British marques which included
several international vehicles. The prominence in this year’s show was to put
additional emphasis on British cars and the invitational designation was to
include certain International and special automobiles. Mike Carroll, Concours
Chairman, had the daunting task of organizing the layout the grounds prior to
the show in order to maximize and better utilize the hilly terrain of the
estate.
The Jaguar Concours d’Elegance were divided into 3 classes, Championship,
Driven, and Special Division which were judged under Jaguar Clubs of North
America (JCNA) Concours rules. There were also several not judged entries
that were “Display Only”, but they were still eligible for the Peoples’ Choice
award. Originality and authenticity is crucial for Jaguar owners that are competing for National awards in Championship and
Driven and are meticulously maintained.
Concours Sanitaire Division was primarily open to British and selected
International vehicles of all years, makes, and models. These vehicles were
judged solely on appearance, cleanliness and general condition in four areas,
engine bay (under bonnet), trunk (boot), interior, and exterior. Originality is
not judged and entrants were grouped in classes based on model year. The
awards were presented to first three places in each class plus special awards
going to Best MG, Best in Show for Sanitaire and Jaguar Concours d’Elegance
as well as Judges Choice.
Returning to the event was a Youth Judging Program sponsored by Hagerty
Insurance. Introduced as their official youth service in 2007, the Youth
Judging Program is hosted at more than 100 classic car and boat events
throughout the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Designed primarily for youth ages
8 to 14, the Youth Judging Program brings the world of classics
to a kid friendly level. The Young Judges are guided through
the show field as a group to pre-selected show cars and
interact with owners, allowing the judges to learn details,
history and fun facts about each. A simplified score card that
highlights five basic categories and is rated on a scale of 1-to-5
is used. For more information or to request a Youth Judging
kit for your show, contact [email protected] or 231-
922-8841.
For our Concours, Hagerty enlisted volunteers from the local
Boy Scouts and additional young judges for the program.
Volunteers were given a hat, lanyard, and a T-shirt to officiate
them as being in the program. Several vehicles were chosen to
be screened by the Youths and were given separate awards
from Hagerty. This was a fun addition, not only for the
children, but for the vehicle owners whose cars they judged.

Support/Youth-Programs.

The top attraction for this year’s show was a XK 120 owned by Clark Gable. Clark Gable was certainly no wallflower, but as
evident from his other famous cars, he had restrained and sophisticated tastes when it came to motoring. Because of this, he didn’t
go crazy with the XK120, instead relying on George Barris to subtly refine the shape of the already gorgeous standard XK120.
Starting with a stock 1952 Open Two Seat model on steel wheels with rear wheel spats, Barris began at the front end by shaving
the trim from the headlights, as well as smoothing the front fenders by shaving off the turn signal plinths. The wing mirrors were
removed and holes filled, while the body sides are essentially left alone to highlight the beautiful original shape. Around the back,
the boot lid is shaved, save for the handle, and the license plate relocated down low. A removable hard top was built to appear like
a Carson Top, which features a full headlining and a leather trimmed parcel shelf that complements the red upholstery. To finish it
off, a pair of subtle Barris Custom Cars badges were affixed to the cowl below the windscreen posts. The overall effect is quite
understated, highlighting the beauty of the basic XK120 form quite brilliantly.
Upon its discovery in 2010, this very important Jaguar XK120
was sent to marque expert Jim Kakuska of JK Restorations in
Oswego, Illinois where it received a stunning restoration to
concours standards. It presents today in beautiful condition,
with the lovely paint color reminiscent of Jaguar’s own
Opalescent Sand. The body and paint are finished to
concours-quality levels, the panel fit is outstanding and the
long, sweeping body sides are exceptionally straight. The car
retains the original steel wheels and wheel spats which,
combined with the subtle Barris touches just make this
XK120 look impossibly sleek and beautiful. Chrome plating
on the delicate bumpers, windscreen frame, wheels and
minor fittings is all of show-quality. This car is a numbers-
matching example with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust
Certificate as well as a certificate of authenticity from Barris
Kustoms to confirm its incredible pedigree.
This very special and truly unique Jaguar XK120 benefits not
only from a fascinating history, but also from a truly world-
class restoration by respected marque experts, and is certain
to qualify for virtually prestigious concours or road event
worldwide. We were fortunate that Joe Limongelli, the
current owner, was gracious enough to bring it to our show.
Throughout the day Joe Limongelli (from the Velocity
Channel show “Ford GT: An American Icon” series and also
the “Legends of Design” series) was the Master of
Ceremonies and had owners drive up to the central grounds
in order to showcase their vehicles. Joe’s presentations of
select cars and their owners included detailed history and
comparisons of the different years such as the evolution of
Jaguar’s sport car E-Type to the XJS, XK8 up to this year’s
newest Jaguar models provided by Huntington Jaguar.

The day turned out to be sunny and warm without the threat of
inclement weather. By noontime, the grounds were full of spectators admiring all the beautiful cars on the picturesque grounds of
the Vanderbilt Estate. It was another successful show for the Jaguar Club and the Vanderbilt Museum. We thank everyone for
coming and for everyone who helped put on another great show!

Our hobby, and business for some of us, has changed quite a
lot since I started seriously collecting, and writing, over 30
years ago. For awhile, in the 1990s there was a publication for
collectors of automobilia, but since its demise long ago, there
has been absolutely nothing for all of us …..until now. I am
truly excited about this new publication, and I am delighted to
be a part of it.

The Hispano Suiza Stork is one of the most well-known mascots in the automotive world. Designed by Frederick Bazin to
honor France’s renowned WWI flying ace George Guynemere. Hispano was involved in wartime aviation engineering, and the
company adopted The Stork as being representative of France’s aerial successes.
This example was photographed on one of the beautiful Hispano-Suiza cars within the Mullin Automotive Museum’s famed
collection in Oxnard, CA.

Calling All Cars! Our 26th annual Road Rally is scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2018. We hope you’ll join us as we once again celebrate Bridgehampton’s racing heritage. Cars built in 1969 and earlier are eligible and newer vintages will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
This year’s Rally will include four other components: a judged show, a parade, a historic trivia quest, and a special timed component. The Rally Route will be approximately 60 miles and will include four stops to collect poker cards and stops for historic trivia sites. The route should take about three hours to complete. 1969 and newer cars will begin leaving the Corwith grounds at noon, with the older vintages following at 12:30pm.
The Judged Show: In the morning, judges will evaluate each registered rally car. Prizes will be awarded in the afternoon, after the Rally.
The Parade: At 11 am rallyists will be led around the 1949-1953 four-mile race loop and then return to the Corwith House grounds to line up for the start of the Rally.
The Historic Trivia Quest: The Rally Route will once again include stops at historic sites, most of which will require the driver and/or navigator to get out and explore the property in order to find the answer to a trivia question. As one of last year’s participants put it, “The trivia stops got us to go places that we had never been to before, which we enjoyed.”
The Time Component: This year there will also be a prize for the car that returns to the Museum closest to the official projected Rally time, as pre-determined by the Rally Committee. Teams must obey all traffic regulations while making allowances for lunch, “pit stops,” poker stops, and trivia stops.
Refreshments will be served after the Rally while all results are being tallied, followed by an awards ceremony.
The Rally entry fee is $125 and the Tour entry fee is $100. The Rally & Tour will occur rain or shine.
To enjoy the Rally we suggest you make sure your car is in good running order, dress for the weather, and bring along a cell phone. Rally participants must submit copies of their driver’s license, car registration and insurance certificate, as well as a release signed by the driver on behalf of the driver and all passengers.
Coffees, bagels and pastries will be available during morning registration, as well as tote bags with the Rally Route, lunch for Rally drivers & navigators, and other surprise paraphernalia.
Please contact the Bridgehampton Museum at 631-537-1088, or [email protected] with additional questions or to inquire about the eligibility of a Post 1969 vehicle. Gates Open To Rally Autos 9 am Gates Open to the Public 10am

British cars in watercolor: An artist's gallery opens on the Web
FEBRUARY 16, 2016
ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA - If you like British cars, and insist on good art, watercolor artist George Ellis has lots of fine art prints to choose from. Whether your interest is in MGs, Jaguars, Austin-Healeys, or other British cars, Mr. Ellis offers a growing list of prints featuring the classics.
Mr. Ellis is not new to painting cars; he's been painting for 15 years. What's new is that he is now offering Open Edition and Limited Edition prints of his work at his Web site, www.GeorgeEllis.com. The prints are produced to the highest standards.
At the George Ellis Gallery online, visitors are greeted by a light green SS-100 Jaguar in a beach scene. Clicking the first of the links at the left of the screen, one reads "About the Art," which offers a brief synopsis of the artist, the art, the prints, and how to order prints through the site.
The prints come in a variety of sizes: most are 11x14 inches, some are larger (up to 16x20 inches), and some are available as 5x7 inch prints. They're produced with archival inks on watercolor-type paper to hold their true colors well over time. It's expensive to make prints this way, but fine art is meant to last indefinitely.
Mr. Ellis's art looks attractive on the walls of any home, garage, shop, office, and of course "mancaves." Limited Edition prints in particular represent an investment in art that can be expected to gain in value over the years.
To visit the George Ellis Gallery online, go to www.GeorgeEllis.com. The site accepts major credit cards and PayPal, and it offers "old school" customers the low-tech option of printing out a paper order form. If you have questions or would like to leave a comment, use the Contact form in the links list. The Gallery also accepts commissions; e-mail inquiries to [email protected] or call the Gallery at 631-757-3722 during business hours for details.
