Connecting the Gable Family

Alice Gable Kalush

August 2014

Last Updated: 7/6/2017

The families of my parents Ruth Musser Kraiss and Charles Marvin Gable visited each other multiple times

during their childhood even though my mother lived in Mountville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and my

dad lived in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, a distance of 350 miles. They suspected that the two families were

related to each other but weren’t sure how. My mother’s great grandmother Elizabeth Gable Klugh had died a

decade before my parents were born in 1918 and had lived in Mountville with my mother’s grandmother

Barbara Klugh Musser Shindle and her second husband Michael G. Shindle.

The Gable and Kraiss families circa 1925 at Kraiss home in Mountville Back Row: Charles Dudley Gable, John Gable, Sarah Campbell Gable (wife of John)

Barbara Klugh Musser Shindle, Mabel Musser Kraiss, Hazel Gable, Florence Shindle Fisher

Ruth Kraiss, Charles Marvin Gable, Barbara Kraiss

My parents were married on November 22, 1950 and were married for over 50 years. Below is their wedding

invitation hand decorated by my mother.

Between 1975 and 1995 my mother did extensive research on the Gable and Klugh families and was able to

trace her branch of the family back to Jacob Gable and Elizabeth Hambright using family records and Trinity

Lutheran Church, Lancaster, PA sources. She also traced the Klugh family back to Carl Klugh and his son

Gottfried Klugh who was in the Lancaster County Militia during the revolutionary war.

On my Dad’s side of the family using Gable family records and the Koppes book she was able to trace by Dad’s

family back to Benjamin Gable and Anna Koppes. She also found the Medina County Cemeteries book which

included Benjamin Gable and his second wife’s Margaret Overholt Nash Gable’s graves. Located in the same

area is the grave of Polly Gable, designated as Benjamin’s unmarried sister.

She wrote extensive letters, researched census records and church records and contacted every suspected

relative she could find. She collected an impressive amount of data about both sides of the family.

Revolutionary War Gables

There is a story about Gable brothers coming from Germany to fight in the Revolutionary war. My sister

Martha Gable included this story in her 1970s paper 'The Gable Family in America' in which she interviewed

our father's mother Hazel Gable. I found two 1947 letters from Hazel Gable to my mother (Ruth Kraiss) about

meeting a John Gable near the cemetery where Benjamin Gable's wife Anna Koppes Gable was buried in

Wayne County, Ohio. This man was apparently the source of the story on the next page which I explain in the

footnote below.1

Mary Gable Rohrer (husband Glen Lester Rohrer), daughter of Benjamin Gable's grandson Uriah Gable and

Zulemma Anderson, also mentions a couple of times in 1970s letters "I remember him (her father) telling (us)

his ancestors were Hessian soldiers hired by the British for a nickel a day to fight in the Revolutionary war."

However, Uriah Gable was on one of the 1947 trips with the Gables.

Douglas W. Baldwin says that his grandfather Richard S. Gable (1915-2012) also often told the Hessian soldier

story. Richard is a descendant of William Gable and Catherine Klugh and lived in Harrisburg, PA. 1-John Gable b. Between 1761 and 1765, Lancaster County, PA, d. After 1840,

1The first cemetery visited was Maple Hill Mennonite Cemetery where Benjamin Gable and Margaret Overholt Nash Gable are

buried.

The second cemetery is Eight Square Cemetery, grandmother was Anna Koppes Gable. 'Charlie' was Hazel Gable's husband.

According to the 1940 Census there was a John I. Gable b. 24 Aug 1883 d. 7 Jul 1972 with wife Elmira Martin (1881-1961) who lived

in Chester Township. Some census research showed he was the son of Henry Peter Gable b. 8 Jan 1859, PA, d. 9 Dec 1923, Chester

Twp, Wayne Co., OH, bur. Eight Square Cemetery, Wayne Co., OH and Catherine Imhoff (1852-1929). Henry Peter was the son of

Solomon Gable b. Jan 1825, Pennsylvania and Rebecca. Solomon was the son of John Gable and Mary Lutz according to Solomon's

death certificate. My mother's community was Mountville, PA. Clarence Gable, a Mountville relative, was the grandson of William

Gable and Catherine Klugh. William was the brother of Elizabeth Gable Klugh, my mother's great grandmother.

In Biographical Annals of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, J. H. Beers, 1904, on page 187 there's an entry about the Gable family. It

turns out Gable ancestor John Gable was talking about was John Gable (b. February 11, 1756, near Zeifenbeck, Principality of

Waldeck, m. 23 Aug 1729 to Elizabeth Marzall, d. 1804) and his son John Gable (b.8 Nov 1795, m. December 1, 1795 to Anna Maria

Lutz). John Gable Sr. and family moved to Warwick Township, Lancaster County. They are both listed there in the 1820 census and

later years. John Jr.'s sons Solomon Augustus born January 30, 1825 and William Henry, born August 31, 1836 were the brothers

named in the story to my grandmother.

My ancestors John and Elizabeth Gable were living in Manheim Township in 1820. So they can't be the same couple.

An Aunt?

This was a followup to the letter about the Revolutionary War Gables discussed in the previous section.

Benjamin's son John called my great-grandmother Eliza Gable 'aunt'. They were probably actually first

cousins, but I can see why he called her aunt because she was old enough to be his aunt.

Excerpt from July 9, 1947 Letter from Hazel Gable to Mabel Musser Kraiss, Ruth Kraiss' mother:

"As I wrote to Ruth, we have been having a lot of fun looking up our ancestors, or rather your ancestors. I told

you about finding a family of Gables down in Wayne County, and a week ago we drove down again, stopping

for Ury Gable and his wife on the way down. It has been so long since we have seen Ury that we hardly knew

each other. I think they enjoyed the trip very much. We couldn't trace the relationship with this John Gable,

but since we had been down there, he had traced our relationship with a Mrs. Imhoff, who had been Cora

Brenneman, a sister of Ida Brenneman. This Ida Brenneman was a missionary in Africa, I think and I think

your mother knew her, and maybe you remember her, too. They are second cousins of Charlie's, their

grandfathers were brothers. Ury says he remembers his father speaking of your grandmother as Aunt

Eliza. An uncle of this John Gable down in Wayne county says he knew Mr. Shindle, did business with him.

We'll have to get together and go into it further."

Chapter One: The Family of John and Elizabeth Gable

Based on further research I have concluded the following (more details later in this document about why I

believe this). My mother is descended from Jacob Gable (Pennsylvania branch) and my father is descended

from Benjamin Gable (Ohio branch). It is my belief that both Jacob and Benjamin as well as the other siblings

listed below were all children of John and Elizabeth Gable who originally lived in Manheim Township,

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and moved in about 1830 to Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio. There

are documents connecting the Ohio branch of the family (John and Elizabeth, Benjamin, Polly, Catherine and

Henry) with each other though no actual relationship is mentioned in an official document. The relationship of

Jacob Gable and his descendants to the Ohio branch of the family is based over 100 years (1830 to 1950) of

letters and visits between the two branches of the Gable family as well as a belief that they are related.

John (Johan) Gebel/Gabel/Gable Sr b. 1761-1770 and his wife Elizabeth b. 1761-1770 had

___ children. They originally lived in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, PA and before 1831 moved to

Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio. Jacob remained in Pennsylvania and all of the other children moved

to Ohio about 1830.

Possible marriage record: According to records from First Reformed Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, PA, John

Gebel and Elizabeth Benz of Manheim were married on April 30, 1792 by Rev. J. C. Albert Helffenstein. 2

They had the following children:

1-John Gable b. Between 1761 and 1765, Lancaster County, PA, d. After 1840, last known Milton Township, Wayne County, OH +Elizabeth b. 1761-1770, PA, d. Between 1840 and 1850, last known Milton Township, Wayne County, OH

I’d like to thank Jean Sears (descendant of Henry Gable), who first brought John Gable Sr. to my attention and

had the deeds for John Gable’s property purchases in Milton Township, OH and provided a significant amount

of the other information in this document about John, Benjamin and Henry as well as Gables in general. I’d

also like to thank Lowell Weller (descendant of Catherine Gable), who asked to see those deeds and provided

information about Christian and Catherine Gable Browand. I found Christian Browand as a witness on John

Gable’s first property purchase in Ohio. This helped me believe that the John Gable in Pennsylvania in 1800,

1810, 1820 was the same person as the John Gable in Ohio in 1831, 1840.

John and Elizabeth Gable Census

John and Elizabeth Gable (Gebel) lived in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1800, 1810

and 1820 (according to the census) and in Milton Township, Wayne County in 1831, 1834 and 1838 according

to deeds and in 1840 according to the census.

Birth Dates: John/Elizabeth 1760-1769, Jacob 1793, Polly 1797, Catherine 1800, Benjamin 1806, Henry 1812.

It’s fairly certain all of the children were born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. The only birth location

information for John and Elizabeth is the 1880 Census of their sons Benjamin and Henry which agree that their

parents were both born in Pennsylvania. The other children were already dead in 1880.

1800 Census Manheim Township, Lancaster County, PA. This census shows John Gebel, George

Hambrecht (father of John’s son Jacob’s future wife Elizabeth) and Jacob Broband (father of John’s daughter

Catherine’s future husband Christian Browand) living very close together.

John Gable Ohio Property Transactions

1831, 1834 John Gable bought land in Milton Township, Wayne County Ohio from Thomas Ward and John

McDonald, respectively. The price paid was $600. The deed was witnessed by Christian Browand, husband

of Catherine Gable.3

1838 John Gable and his wife Elizabeth sold the same land to Benjamin and Henry Gable (separate parcels).

Both of these deeds were signed by “Johann Gabel”. This is also the source of John’s wife name because she

is named in the text as his wife. Benjamin and Henry each paid John Gable $300 exactly equaling the original

price paid in 1831. No mention of a relationship between John, Benjamin and Henry in these documents.

John Gable Ohio Tax Records4

I found nothing in 1830.

In 1831 John Gable is listed in Milton twp. with 2 horses. No land tax is listed.

In 1832, there is a listing in Milton twp. for John Gabil or Gabril, with 2 horses & 2 cattle. No land tax.

In 1833 in Milton twp., John Gable is taxed for a sawmill in range 12, township 18, section 3, SE. No land

acreage given. A John Gabriel is also taxed for 2 horses & 2 cattle.

In 1834 in Milton twp., John Gable is taxed for land in range 12, twp. 18, sec. 3, pt. W pt SW, 80 acres. And for

one sawmill. In the chattel section, John Gable has 2 horses & 2 cattle.

In 1835 in Milton twp., John Gable is listed in range 12, twp. 18, sec. 3, W pt SW with 98 acres.

1836, 1837 & 1838 -- identical to 1835 listing

John Gebel Sr, Manheim Township and John Gable, Milton Township Same Person

It is reasonable to assume that the John Gebel in Manheim Township in 1800 and 1820 is the same person as

the John Gable in Milton Township in 1831 and 1840. Jacob Broband (Catherine Gable’s husband Christian’s

father) appears four lines above John Gebel in 1800 Manheim Township census. George Hambrecht (Jacob

Gable’s wife Elizabeth’s father) appears ten lines above John Gebel in the 1800 census. The ages of the John

Gable children in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census in Manheim Township match the families of John Gable and

Jacob Gable. Christian Browand was a witness to John’s 1831 land purchase in Milton Township. John sold

property in Milton Township to Benjamin and Henry in 1838. John, Benjamin and Henry appear on

consecutive lines in 1840 Milton Township census.

4 From Jean Sears, Microfilmed Tax Records for Wayne Co, OH. Some earlier years were available, but nothing after 1838.

Sometimes there are two tax lists for a township, one for land & one for chattel (horses & cattle). The chattel list was not always

present.

Polly Gable wasn’t found in any Census.

John Gable's Marriage and Wife's Surname

According to records from First Reformed Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, PA, John Gebel and Elizabeth Benz of

Manheim were married on April 30, 1792 by Rev. J. C. Albert Helffenstein. This is 10 months before Jacob Gable was

born on Jan 28, 1793.5

Wilhelm and Barbara (Weller) Gebel - Possible Parents of John Gable

(Last investigated 6/29/2017)

I searched the available records for Lancaster county couples with a son John that was born in the period

corresponding to my best guess for his birth date. As discussed below, it was not easy to estimate when he was

born based on census records so I could confirm it was the same John Gable in Manheim Township at the time

of his birth that lived in Manheim Township as an adult starting his family and moved in his later years to Ohio.

I came to the conclusion that my ancestor John Gable is Johannes Gebel, the son of Wilhelm and Barbara

Gebel. Wilhelm and Barbara Weller Gebel lived in Manheim Township from 1770 until 1810. Their son

Johannes/Johann/John Gebel, who I believe is John Gable, was born in 1774. Wilhelm's will states that his son

John is living in Manheim Township in 1810 (there's a John Geble in the 1810 census which was taken in

August after Wilhelm's death in May.) In the 1800 census there was a John Gebel and a Wilhelm Gebel and

based on the tallies, mostly John was living with his children and Wilhelm was living with his younger children.

Wilhelm Gebel is listed in Manheim Township Tax Exoneration or Septential Census records in 1773, 1779,

1783, 1785, 1793 and 1800. In the later ones John and some of his brothers also appear. All of the Gebel first

names that appear in these records appear to be known members of Wilhelm's family.

The only information from later in his life that we have about John Gable's birth date is from the 1800 - 1840

Federal Census. A death record or a grave have not been found. There is a birth record for Johann Gebel at

Trinity Lutheran Church6 giving his birth date as Nov. 20, 1774 with his parents listed as Wilhelm and Barbara.

My assumption is that in one or more of the federal census his age was tallied in the wrong column or I have

identified the wrong John Gable in that census. There were two census records in 1930. The places for the

census records were consistent with what we knew about John's location from other sources.

John Weller, Ancestor of Barbara Weller

In the Weller Notebook7, it discusses the ancestors of Wilhelm Gebel's wife Barbara Weller.

"Two brothers , John Henry Weller in Rapho Twp, Lancaster Co., PA and Joseph Henry Weller in Hempfield Twp. just east of Rapho Twp. Joseph’s son was John Ludwig/Lewis Weller. He married Anna Barbara Krowberger (many different spellings). Now here is the entry for their daughter Anna Barbara Weller. (All their four daughters were Anna’s.) ” Anna Barbara Weller b. October 26, 1753 in Hempfield Township , Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. 30 acres listed on tax list for the year 1785 thru 1788 and died single in 1828.”

Here is the entry for Barbara Weller daughter of Joseph Henry Weller: ” Barbara Weller b. circa 1750, married William Cable(Gable/Kable) February 15, 1770, Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.”

In 2013 a 1769 Land Deed for Albertina Weller8,

Provenace:

John Penn (1729–1795), Colonial Governor of Pennsylvania, was born in London, a grandson of William Penn, founder of the colony.

He was the last proprietary official of the colony, and was under the domination of the Penn family in his two administrations, 1763–

1771 as Lt. Governor and 1773–1776 as Governor. During that time Pennsylvania was torn by a bitter struggle between those who

favored proprietary government and those who sought to end it. Penn lost power when the proprietary government was displaced in

1776, during the American Revolution. He yielded to the course of events, however, and remained in Philadelphia until his death.

John and Albertina Weller of Rapho Township, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, survey made for John in 1766. On 7 Oct 1769 to

Albertine Weller in trust on a warrant to accept dated 20 Apr 1768. She appears to have paid tax on this land in 1779 and Mathias

Kissler (Kesler) appears to have paid tax on this land in 1782. John Weller died between 4 Nov 1766 and 19 May 1767. Albertina died

after 3 Jun 1781.

There is a Weller family tree on FamilySearch which shows Weller ancestors going back to the 1500s.9

In Lancaster City around the time that John Gable would have been born (1760-1769), Wilhelm (1728-1785)

and Eva Elizabeth Gebel (Goebel)(Göbel) (-1801) lived in Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County, PA. Among

their children was Johann Jacob Göbel (born Feb 11, 1764). This couple is listed several times on this set of

papers and their last name varies (Gebel, Goebel, Gable). It also says that Eva Elisabetha is a Lutheran like

the rest of the Klugh clan that the Gable clan married into. Found burial record for Johann Jacob Göbel

(Jacob Gebel) that says he was buried in Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery, Lancaster, PA on June 18, 1802

according to church records which says he was 38 yrs, 4 months and 6 days which exactly matches the birth

date for Johann Jacob Göbel.

John Gable and Elizabeth Marzall

I was able to rule out John Gable (b. 11 Feb 1756 m. 23 Aug 1789 d. 1852) and Elizabeth Marzall because they

never lived in either Manheim Township or Hempfield Township10

and this John and John Jr. were listed in the

1820 Census in Warwick Township at the same time that our John and John Jr were listed in Manheim

Township.

Biographical Annals of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, J. H. Beers, 1904, on page 187. John Gable lived first in Heidelberg

township, Lebanon county and moved to Lancaster County in 1788, got married in 1789, set up household in Mt. Joy in 1790, where

he moved to Sporting Hill in Rapho Township and in 1803 to Warwick township. To John Gable and wife were born four children, as

follows: Maria, born August 17. 1790, married Rev. H. Scriba, a Lutheran minister at Manheim. Pa.; John (3), born November 8,

1795; Christian, born April 28, 1803; and Catherine, born December 13, 1804. Their son John Gable Jr married Mary Lutz in 1818.

To John Gable (3) and his wife were born seven children as follows: Jonathan Monroe, born January 4, 1820; Mary Caroline, born

Census information

1790 Census for Lancaster county, PA lists Jacob Gable in Lancaster borough and John Gable in Mt. Joy. Research by

John Gable’s descendants indicate that he moved to Warwick township in 1803 and lived there until he died in 1852.

John Gable’s wife was named Elizabeth Marzell.

1800 Census for Lancaster county, PA still lists Jacob Gable in Lancaster borough and lists John Gable in Manheim

township (see above).

1820 Census for Lancaster county, PA lists John Sr. and John Jr. in Warwick (probably the 1790 John and his son). John

Jr.’s wife was named Anna Maria Lutz (daughter of John). There are some Lutz’s in Manor Township that married into

the Klugh clan but I couldn’t match them. Also listed is a John Gable in Earl township (free white males: 1 16-25, 1 26-

45, free white females 1 <10, 1 16-25, 1 26-45.

There is also a John Sr and John Jr. in Manheim township (see previous notes).

1830 Census for Lancaster county, PA lists John Gable in Earl township. Ages look consistent with the

1820 John in Earl township (free white males: 1 20-29, 1 50-59, free white females: 1 15-19, 1 30-39.

Chapter Two: The Family of Jacob Gebel and Elizabeth Hambrecht

Elizabeth Hambrecht (Hambright) was born to Georg Hambrecht (1749-1826) and his wife Anna Maria

(Schindel) (1755-1828) on June 17, 1793 and christened on December 22, 1793 according to the following

record from Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, MI. Family records list her death as February 17, 1852. The

Hambrecht family lived in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, PA. Georg Hambrecht’s headstone is now

located at the Landis Valley Farm Museum in Lancaster, PA.

Elizabeth Hambrecht Birth Ledger Page 11

Jacob Gabel Headstone12

Georg Freidrich Schindel’s will confirms that his daughter Anna Maria Schindel was married to George

Hambright:

“… It is further my bequest that my property shall be equally divided among my children who are George

Schindel, and my daughter Anna Maria married to George Hambright, … ”

Trinity Lutheran Church was not able to find a birth record for Jacob Gable/Gebel. Mabel Musser Kraiss

(Elizabeth Gable Klugh’s granddaughter) believed that he was born January 28, 1793 and died January 16,

1872. Based on the 1850 and 1870 census, it’s more likely he was born in 1794. The 1850 census lists him

and his wife Elizabeth as 56 on 9/9/1850. The 1870 census shows him living in the household of daughter

Elizabeth Gable Klugh and lists him as 76 on 7/27/1870.

Jacob and Elizabeth’s children

Jacob and Elisabeth had at least four children: William, Elizabeth, Jacob and Henry. Birth records exist for all four

children which list their parents as Jacob Gable and his wife Elizabeth (a daughter of Geo. Hambright).

William was born on Oct 20, 1817 in Manheim Township and died on Sep 4, 1851 in Mountville, Lancaster County, PA.

He married Catherine Klugh, daughter of Jacob Klugh (1788-1864) and Maria Peters (1788-aft 1860) on Dec 13, 1840 in

West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, PA as documented in the following family record. Catherine was born

Elizabeth Gable Klugh obituaries: Slightly different version: Columbia News, Columbia, Pennsylvania, June 8, 1908: Mrs. Elizabeth Klugh, widow of Charles Klugh, died yesterday morning at 2:30 o'clock at the home of her son-in-law, M.G. Schindle, at Mountville, from acute indigestion and infirmities due to old age, she being in her eighty-seventh year. Mrs. Klugh retired on Saturday evening in her usual health, about 2 o'clock yesterday morning she summoned her daughter and expired shortly afterwards. Deceased was the daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Gable. She was born in Manheim Township, north of Petersburg.

For a number of years she resided east of Mountville. Her husband died forty-six yars ago and she had resided with her daughter for the past thirty years. Deceased was a member of the Mountville Reformed Church, the following children survive: Jacob H. Klugh of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Mary Musser, of Mountville; Mrs Barbara Shindle. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home of her daughter in Mountville. Interment will be in the Mountville Cemetery.

Her father, Jacob Gabbel did live near John and

Emanuel Minich in East Hempfield Township in the

1850 census. According to the 1864 D. S. Bare &

Bridgens Atlas of Lancaster County, the Minich families lived northwest of Petersburg (currently called East Petersburg).

I assume this means that Elizabeth was born in Manheim Township. We know she lived in East Hempfield township

by 1825 because her siblings Jacob and Henry were born there (see their birth frakturs below).

37

William K. Gable (son of Jacob Gable's son, Henry Gable and Mary Klugh) is described below. WILLIAM K. GABLE.

18 For twenty-four years Mr. Gable has been in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company,

having risen from the position of brakeman to the more responsible post of engineer. In the discharge of these duties he has exhibited the keen intelligence, quick perception and rugged honesty which have characterized him through life. He was born in the township of West Hempfield, Dec. 15, 1852. His father, whose Christian name is Henry, was born in 1827. He is by trade a blacksmith, but ceased active toil many years ago, and is passing life's evening in well earned repose. The name of Mr. Gable's mother before marriage was Marl Cluke (assume this is Mary Klugh). She was born in 1831, and passed away Oct. 4, 1891. Both she and her husband were earnest members of the Reformed Church. They came to Columbia to reside in 1877, and were the parents of four children : William K., Harry H., Anna and Martin. Harry H. is a Pennsylvania Company's flagman and lives in Reading. Anna is the wife of John Kleinfelter, of Cumberland county. Martin is also a railroad man, his home being in Reading. William K. Gable remained at home until he had passed his thirteenth year, when, a mere boy in point of age, yet full of pluck and grit, he found his way to Chicago, 111. For a year he attended school there, and for three years worked in a box factory. In 1870 he returned to Lancaster county, finding employment as an apprentice in a blacksmith shop in Mountville, where he remained for three months. From Mountville, he went to Lancaster, where he passed six months. The next eighteen months he spent in Mt. Joy. Having learned the trade he readily found employment in Harrisburg as a journeyman during the three and a half years following. He subsequently found work at his trade at Pittsburg and at other points, but his natural impulse was toward the exciting, perilous (and sometimes underpaid) life of a railroad man. His yearning was gratified in 1876, when he entered the Pennsylvania Company's service as a brakeman. Six months later he was made a fireman ; and after riding in the cab for five years and eleven months in that capacity, he was promoted to the position of engineer. He is a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and in politics is a Republican. Both himself and family attend the Lutheran Church. He married, June 18, 1878, Sally E. Jeffers, who was born at Lancaster, April 3, 1857. Her father, John, was a Union soldier, who sacrificed an arm in his country's service. He died in 1864, in his forty-first year. Mrs. Gable's mother's name before marriage was Catherine Lingars. Mrs. Jeffers survived her husband for five years, and died in 1869, aged forty-two years. Mrs. Gable was their only child. Her mother, however, married again, her second husband being Benjamin Roodman. The issue of the second marriage was one daughter, Anna, who married William Noxtoof, of Lancaster. Twelve children have been born to the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Gable: Albert, Harry, Florence, William, Mattie and Stella (twins), John, Irene, Greda, Edna and Alex (twins), and Howard. Five survive and live at home with their parents: Albert, Harry, Florence, Stella and Howard. John Peters Gable (son of Jacob Gable's son William Gable and Catherine Klugh) John P. Gable would start a saddle shop at 33 East Main Street in 1880, partnering with Henry S. Immel in his tobacco warehouse business in 1904.

Why John Gebel/Gable Jr and Jacob Gable Are Same Person

I'm thinking that John Gable Jr. is actually my mother's ancestor Jacob Gable. The 1820 census for John

Gable Jr, includes consistent ages for Jacob, Elizabeth and William. The 1830 census for Jacob Gebel includes

Jacob, Elizabeth, William, Elizabeth, Jacob and Henry. Jacob’s wife Elizabeth’s father lived near the John

Gable family in Manheim Township when Jacob and Elizabeth were children. Jacob and Elizabeth were

living in Manheim Township in 1817 according to a birth document for their son William Gable which was

probably made around 1845 after the birth of William's first two children. 20

By 1822 when my ancestor

Elizabeth Gable was born, they had either moved to "Lancaster Parish" as it states on the certificate or what I

have is a christening fraktur not a birth fraktur and it's saying where she was baptized. Elizabeth’s obituary

says she was born in “Manheim township”. By 1825, their family was in East Hempfield Township as it says

on their sons Jacob and Henry's birth frakturs. This disagrees with the 1830 census in showing the family in

Manheim Township.

In both the Hambright and Klugh families from Lancaster County in the late 1700s I have papers showing

boys listed as Johann middle last and others referring to the same person as middle last. This could account for

the name change between John and Jacob.

Hambrecht, died shortly after arriving in America. His oldest son Johann Adam reared his younger siblings.

The Hambright family came from Neunstetten, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. Johann Adam Hambrecht

lived in Manheim Township and was a farmer and soldier. He rendered material aid by purchasing supplies

and enlisting soldiers in Lancaster County. His younger brother Colonel Frederick Hambright was famous for

the battle of Kings Mountain in NC during the Revolutionary War.

Son Johann Georg Hambright was a Lieutenant in Captain Martin Weybright's Company in the Lancaster

County Militia during the Revolutionary War and was a farmer in Manheim Township. Children: George,

Benjamin Gable died on Aug 9, 1895 and was buried in Maple Hill Mennonite Cemetery, near Wadsworth,

Ohio. Cemetery records list his birth place as Lancaster County, PA and his age at death as 88 years, 9 months

and 14 days which makes his birth date about October 26, 1806. Benjamin’s death certificate lists his

birthplace as Lancaster, PA, lists his age as 88 years and does not give a birth date. It lists his last known

residence as Guilford Township, Medina County, OH.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, PA was unable to find birth records for Benjamin.

Also in the cemetery records is that Benjamin had an unmarried sister named Polly (some other sources call her

Mary), who died on Oct. 2, 1874 at age 77 which places her birth date circa 1797.

Benjamin Gable and Anna Koppes were married on May 29, 1838 in Medina County, Ohio and had six

children: Eliza, Jacob, John, Henry, Samuel and David. This same information about their children can also be

found in the Koppes book. Anna was the mother of all of Benjamin’s children.

Benjamin Gable / Anna Koppes Marriage Record

After Anna died, Benjamin married Margaret Overholt Nash (1811-1891) (daughter of Abraham Overholt

(1784-1859) and Hannah Shutt (1792-1873) on Feb 10, 1867. Margaret was previously married to Henry

Wismer Nash (1783-1861). Henry Nash was the father of all of Margaret’s children.

Benjamin Gable Property History

1838 John Gable and his wife Elizabeth sold the same land to Benjamin and Henry Gable (separate parcels).

Both of these deeds were signed by “Johann Gabel”. This is also the source of John’s wife name because she

is named in the text as his wife. Benjamin and Henry each paid John Gable $300 exactly equaling the original

price paid in 1831. No mention of a relationship between John, Benjamin and Henry in these documents.

1840 Census shows John Gable, Benjamin and Henry Gable listed in consecutive lines in Milton Township.

1850, 1860 Census shows Benjamin and Anna Gable living in New Pittsburgh, Chester Township, Wayne

County, Ohio. Henry Gable is still living in Milton Township in 1850. By 1860 Henry Gable has also moved

to New Pittsburgh.

April 17, 1866 Deed - Benjamin Gable of Wayne County, OH bought the farm near River Styx, in Guilford

Township, Medina County, Ohio from David and Magdelena Kreider of Medina County, Ohio for $10,900.

This includes the adjoining land in Wadsworth Township. The southwest corner of this property adjoined the

property of Jacob Coppes (probably Anna Koppes Gable’s brother).

1870, 1880 Census show Benjamin and Margaret Gable living in Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio.

By 1870 Henry Gable has bought land in Wadsworth Township, Medina County, Ohio which is just across the

township line near Benjamin Gable’s property and is also listed there in 1880.

June 4, 1886 – Benjamin and Margaret Gable of Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio sold the same farm

to Benjamin’s son John Gable (living in the same place) for $10,840. It indicates that the portion of the

property adjoining the former Koppes farm is now owned by Joseph Beck.

1895 – Benjamin dies.

John Gable Family Letter Collection

One of the relatives Mama contacted was George Gable, a descendant of John Gable (Benjamin Gable’s son)

and Sarah Campbell. George had a collection of letters saved by John Gable between family members near

River Styx in Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio and Mountville and Millersville, PA. The letters were

written between 1860 and 1895 between various descendants of what I now suspect were four siblings (Jacob,

Polly, Benjamin and Henry). Catherine and her husband weren’t mentioned in the letters. The letters discuss

various trips and visits back and forth between Ohio and Pennsylvania. They also discuss Uncle Henry and

Aunt Poll. In the Charles Dudley Gable family photo album I found a picture of John Gable visiting with the

Mountville relatives in Mountville taken about 1925 which includes both of my parents (see page 1 of this

document).

Here are some of the family members that participated in the letter writing campaign:

1) Jacob Gable’s Descendants:

Barbara Klugh Musser Shindle (Jacob’s granddaughter, my mother’s grandmother)

Michael G. Shindle (Barbara’s husband)

Mary Catherine Klugh Musser (a daughter of William Gable and Catherine Klugh)

2) Polly Gable (Benjamin’s sister) – mentioned only

3) Benjamin Gable’s Descendants:

John Gable (Benjamin’s son)

David Gable (John’s brother, my dad’s grandfather)

Elizabeth Gable (John’s sister)

Sarah Campbell Gable (John’s wife)

Mary

Gable

(John’s daughter)

4) Henry Gable’s Descendants (Benjamin’s brother):

Elizabeth Gable Shaum (Henry’s daughter)

Joseph Shaum (Elizabeth’s husband)

My mother wasn’t able to determine what the common ancestor of Jacob Gable in Pennsylvania and

Benjamin/Polly/Henry Gable in Ohio was and had very minimal information about Henry Gable’s branch of the

family.

About the Koppes Family

Anna Koppes was the daughter of Jacob Koppes (1775-1848) and Barbara Rieser (-1822) according to the

Koppes book22

.

The earliest history of our family that carries with it anything like

defmiteness is an account of the removal of a grandfather

Koppes, whose Christian name I am unable to find, from

Carolina to Northampton County, Pennsylvania. There he

married the widow of one Michael Kulp. She had had several

children by her first marriage, one of whom, Barbary, married

Jacob Geisinger, removed with him to Michigan, where they

reared a large family: after her husband's death she returned to

Ohio and lived to be one hundred years old. Her granddaughter it

was married Abram R. Koppes in the year So we see the Koppes-

Kulp-Geisinger alliances are not altogether recent affairs, but are

-on the other hand-as old as our knowledge of the family. This

Koppes-Kulp marriage in Northampton County, Pennsylvania,

about the year 1770, resulted in a family of at least five children:

2 Jacob Koppes, born June 16, 1775.

2 Nancy Koppes.

2 Catherine Koppes.

2 Elizabeth Koppes.

2 Samuel Koppes, b, May 9, 1786.

Jacob Koppes and his brother Samuel removed from

Pennsylvania to Ohio in the early years of 1800. They came with

families by the slow and tedious means of travel of those pioneer

days, heavy lumbering wagons through woodland trail, or more

often through trackless forest. Jacob took up his abode upon what

was afterward known as the Joseph Beck farm, situated in the

rich River Styx valley in Guilford Township, Medina County, 0.,

and Samuel made his first Ohio home on what was afterward

known as the William Miller farm, located only about a mile

from the Beck farm, and in the same township. The part of this

farm where the buildings stood remained in the Koppes family

for many years. This farm now belongs to the family of the late

Noah N. Yoder, who bought it of the John O. Koppes estate about

thirty years ago. Now we shall trace the lineage of the above

named families in order, or as nearly so as we can, giving little

more than the mere line of descent, though we should enjoy, and could, with profit, fill a large volume with an account of various members who have filled important places in their time

and generation.

Jacob Koppes (2) had two wives. To the first, Barbara Rieser, he was married Nov. 27, 1798. She died Sept. 9, 1822, The second was Anna Swartz,

whom he married Nov. 9, 1823. Jacob Koppes died Jan. 12, 1848, and his widow, Anna, died Oct. 9, 1864, aged 73 years, 7 months and 20 days.

The family of Jacob Koppes and first wife consisted of the following children :

3 Mary Koppes (Berkey), b. Jan. 18, 1800;

3 David Koppes, b. Jan. 22, 1802.

3 Abram R. Koppes, b. Jan. 18, 1804; d. Oct. 15, 1875.

3 Jacob Koppes, born Jan. 18, 1806.

3 Anna Koppes (Benjamin Gable), b. Oct. 6, 1808.

3 Susan Koppes (Tintsman), b. 1811.

3 Katherine Koppes (Buzzard), b. Sept. 4, 1813.

3 Sarah Koppes (Wolf), b. Sept. 5, 1815.

The children of the second family were:

3 Isaac Koppes, b. Mar. 19, 1825: d. same day.

3 John S. Koppes, b. Mar. 30, 1826.

3 Elizabeth Koppes, b. Jan. 25, 1827; d. Nov. 18, 1835.

3 Rebecca Koppes (Stover), b. Nov. 28, 1829.

3 Esther Koppes (Fretz), b. Dee. 1, 1832.

Chapter Four: Other Children of John and Elizabeth Gable

Catherine Gable and Christian Browand

I’m assuming Catherine Gable was a daughter of John Gable. She was born in

Manheim Township, Lancaster County, PA on Aug 4, 1800. She married

Christian Browand in 1820 in Manheim Township. Christian Browand is the son

of Jacob Browand (Prowont, Broband, Provant, etc) and Anna Myers. Jacob

Browand appears four lines above John Gebel in the 1800 Census in Manheim

Township and George Hambright/Hambrecht (father of Jacob Gable’s wife

Elizabeth Hambright) was a few lines above Jacob. This makes them neighbors.

Christian and Catherine moved to Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio about 1827. In 1831 Christian was a

witness on the deed where John Gable (Catherine’s father) bought property in Milton Township from Thomas

Ward. In 1836 they moved again to Perry township, Putnam Co., OH. In 1848 he purchased 160 acres from

James Rogers where he had been living since 1836. He may have purchased the land earlier but the deed may

not have been recorded until 1848. They were among the pioneers of Putnam Co. Christian established the

German Baptist Brethren Church in Putnam Co., OH and served as minister of the church. Christian died 2 Sep

1866 of typhoid fever. Catherine died on her 75th birthday, 4 Aug 1875. Both are buried in Sigler Cemetery,

53

Putnam Co, OH. Christian spelled his name Browant but when his tombstone was replaced with a new one his

name was changed to Prowant, a spelling that all his children used.

About The Rickert Family

66

The Rickert family25

is of German origin, and the descendants of the progenitor in America have lived here through five generations. Daniel Rickert, the first of the name born in America, opened his eyes to the light of day on the old home farm in Hilltown township, which has since been in possession of his descendants. He always car- ried on agricultural pursuits and to that occupation reared his sons. He married Barbara Rosenberger, and they became the parents of six children : Henry, John, Abraham, Catharine, Magdaline and Isaac. Isaac Rickert, whose birth occurred at the ancestral home in Hilltown township, likewise devoted his attention to the till- ing of the soil throughout his business career. He married Catharine Ruth, a daughter of Henry Ruth, who was likewise a native son of Hilltown township. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Rickert were the parents of nine children, namely : David, who married Livy Funk; Abraham, who married Mary Ann Fretz, a daughter of Abram Fretz ; Daniel, who married Lucy Hunter; Annie, the wife of Enos Loux ; Isaac, who was a Mennonite preacher and married Salome Gross ; Henry R. ; Barbara, the wife of Aaron Moyer; and two children who died in infancy. After the death of Isaac Rickert, the father of these children, the mother married Abraham Rickert, a brother of her first husband, and they had two chil- dren : Catharine, who became the wife of William Moyer ; and Maggie, who was the second wife of William Moyer. December 15, 1900 Herald of Truth, Vol. XXXVII, No. 24, page 381, 382 RICHERT. - At River Styx, Ohio, on November 22, 1900, Abraham Richert. He leaves a wife, nine out of ten children, eighteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral and burial at the Lower Mennonite church of which he was long a member. Services by Isaac Good and Jacob Newcomer. She was married Sept. 19, 1847, to Abraham Rickert, whom she survived nearly three and one-half years. She was the mother of five sons and five daughters; all but one son are living. Two years after their marriage they emigrated to near River Styx, Medina Co., Ohio, where they resided until the time of their deaths. On Easter day the relatives and friends assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to our dear mother and friend. The funeral sermon was preached by Bish. Isaac Good from Psa. 35:13,14, assisted by Pre. E. Coppes. For years she has been a faithful member of the Mennonite church and her influence as an active worker and affectionate mother will long be remembered by the family and friends. Birth: Dec. 2, 1798 Death: Nov. 5, 1886 (wife of Isaac R. Rickert Sr.) RICKERT.- On the 5th of November, at the home of her son-in-law, Aaron Meyer, in Plumstead, Bucks Co., Pa., of palsy, widow Catharine Rickert, mother of Preacher Isaac Rickert, aged 87 years, 11 months and 3 days. The body was taken to her former residence with her son-in-law William Meyer, in Hilltown, where the funeral service was held. Thou, mother dear, hast gone to rest, To be with Jesus and the blest; There to await our coming feet, To walk with us the golden street. S. G.
