The Iroquois being sedentary used long houses for shelters. These shelters were very big and could inhabit an entire family.

Since the Iroquois stayed on the same land and never had to move, they would build settlements or villages for their population.

Compared to the Iroquois, Algonquin

were nomadic. So, they had to have

smaller temporary houses that were easy to carry and

resettle. These houses were named

tepee or wigwam.

Continuously moving, this tribe had to rebuild their non-permanent settlements from places to places. They did not have

villages like the Iroquois.

This picture represents the monarchy being the hierarchy system in the Iroquoian society.

This image means that the Algonquin tribes were lead by

men, in other words patriarchy.

This map with Iroquoian territories shows exactly how they didn’t occupy much territory since they were all sedentary.

Saint-Lawrence Lowlands

This image of Canada represents the territory the Algonquin traveled. Being nomadic, they must follow the animals all the time if they want to survive. They cover a much larger territory, known as the Canadian shield.

The Iroquois, being sedentary could grow their food with agriculture but could also hunt some small animals around their settlements.

Because they weren’t always on the move, their technological skills could develop better.

On their side, the Algonquin had to travel all the time from places to places using canoes or walking. to search for foods.

Because of that their technology wasn’t as advanced, and they always had to carry their stuff in bags, canoes or their hands.

This nomadic tribe would only hunt, whatever animals they’d find, and

would never use agriculture.

Their religion was animism, they would believe in animal gods.

Their beliefs were past on from a generations to another with oral story of their spirituality.

They would often represent their beliefs using different types of art whether from painting or sculpting their spirituality.

Sometimes, to celebrate gods, the First Nations would have big rituals where they would dance, sing, make music, wear special clothing, jewellery and make-up. All of this was part of their religion.
