The Limits of Technology“We live in a deranged age, more deranged than usual, because in spite of great scientific and technologicaladvances, man has not the faintest idea of who he is or what he is doing.”- Walker Percy

I was recently due for a cell phone upgrade so I decided to make the trip to Best Buy inRiverhead to look at the latest offerings from Samsung. Since I was a great lover of the Note 2phone, it was an easy decision to make; I would get the Galaxy Note 5. And what a wonder this device is. Sleek and long with a stunning screen driving an amazing16MP camera, my new note is the one device I will always want to take with me. It is my booklibrary, my magazine rack, my music library, my map, my bird field guide, my sketch pad, my sky-watching skymap, my camera, my personal recording device, my calendar, my guitar tuner and many, many other things, all in arazor-thin package. Yes, I am a lover of all things technical and I am so happy to witness that with each newiteration. The phones and tablets and laptops only get better. The average person carries more computing power andtechnology in their pocket than that which took men to the moon and we take it for granted. The future is intechnology; OUR future is in technology. Unfortunately, there is a chink in the armor and the great Catholic novelist Walker Percy is prophetic in pointing itout. While my map app might be able to tell me where I am going literally, the one thing my cell phone cannot do forme is tell me who I am. While I am no Luddite, I can recognize a limitation when I see it - technology can only takeus so far. There may come a day when technology is immediately at our fingertips, doing anything and everythingthat we need but technology will never be able to answer this most significant question. It cannot do this because thisis the job of the one who designs and not the thing designed. Psalms 33:13-15 says, "The LORD looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men; From His dwelling place Helooks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, He who fashions the hearts of them all, He who understands all theirworks." In our technological age, it is critical that we not fall into the habit of thinking that we have all the answers. Now, perhaps more than ever, we must look to heaven to understand who we are and look to find ways to help otherscome to this place as well. It is a not really a question of whether faith is relevant but rather how the relevancy ofChristianity can be lived and taught to a world that is so very hungry and ready to hear it. Our mistaken tendencytoday is to believe that faith cannot compete with technology when the reality is that it is technology that has thelimits. And those limits will not be addressed with the next iteration of the Galaxy Note. Pat Hanly

Children’s Church Update

We tried, on Sunday mornings in September with an activity sheet, based on the Scripture of theday. Children work on it during worship and seem to enjoy it. So we will try it again in October. You will find two sheets on the table under the glass window in the Narthex (entry foyer ofchurch). There is a basket for the completed sheets, and a deacon will offer a candy or toy prize

after the service to each child who completes the activity. Please let me know if you have other activity ideas. Ifanyone is interested in overseeing Children’s Church, which normally meets during the second service, please letCaren or Danielle Durkin know of your interest. Keep on “puzzling” for Jesus, Caren :}

First Sunday in November Is Shoe Box Day! Have you decided what age group you'd like to buy for? Have you selected boy or girl, orperhaps one of each? Some folks like to shop for their shoebox(es) all at one time. Others, shop alittle at a time. Whichever way you prefer, just think of the name of Jesus being included in thatbox(es) as it is opened by your recipient(s). There have been stories of whole families and evencommunities learning about the Salvation story, especially following the 12 week discipleshipprogram . The Missions Team

We Need Your Help!

Meals for Members: Angela Brauer continues to be the co-ordinator for this important ministry. We arelooking to update our list of those who are willing to make a meal for a church member when they are in need(after surgery, illness, etc.). Please contact me at: [email protected], or leave a note in my box, if you arewilling to make a meal. I know from personal experience, what a blessing it is to receive meals. Thanks for beinga blessing. Caren

Pew Pads: Ya’ know those pesky red pads that go across the aisle every Sunday?? They are really a vital linkfor us to be able to reach out to those visiting our church. When the pad is passed to you, it would be oftremendous help if you would not only write your name, but also minimally your phone number and/or emailaddress. This way, if there is a visitor who gets the pew pad, he or she is more likely to follow your example andinclude their information as well. When you don’t completely fill out the pew pad, usually newcomers don’teither. Thanks so very much for your attention to this seemingly small, but vital detail. It really does make adifference. Caren

Newsletter: We need some new volunteers to help out a few times a year to collate the newsletter. It will takeabout a hour to an hour and half on the last Thursday morning of the month. The folders always have a good timeand would welcome some new folks! Call the office if you can help. (298-4145)

Thrift Shop: They desperately need help for the fall and winter to keep this ministry open and running.Volunteer for a morning a week, or day a month. Every little bit helps!Thrift shop Phone Number: 298-2990 (Thursdays and Fridays 10-4 & Saturdays 10 -1)

Christmas Families: Christmas is around the corner. Start thinking about shopping for a local family whosechildren won’t have Christmas without help. Call Jeanne Berliner (886-1716) to adopt a family, a child or give tothe program.

Thrift Shop

I can't believe how quickly fall has arrived after the slow start of summer! My cat, whodoesn't sleep with me all summer, snuggled in last night because of the dip in thetemperature. In the Thrift Shop we are ready for the change in seasons. After our ½ pricesale and dollar sale all of our clothing racks have been cleared. Our new clothing is now ondisplay. We are only accepting fall and winter clothing now. Please hold your summer andspring clothing until next year. We really appreciate it because of our lack of storage space. In looking over our new inventory we are in need of: jeans, shoes, and pocketbooks. Weare also low on fiction books. So please bring in all of the beach books you have read overthe summer. All of our Halloween costumes and accessories are out. Costumes are only $3.00 and accessories $1.00. Coatswill be out by the beginning of October. We also have an assortment of wigs for sale. They are not always ondisplay, so just ask one of the volunteers and they will show them to you. A special thank you to Kathy Geiger, who volunteered in the shop in the spring. We wish her well in her newposition in Loaves and Fishes. We also welcome Barbara Karda, who has begun volunteering on FridayMornings. We are still in need of people for Saturday morning. With this onset of cooler weather, our snow birdswill be departing soon and leave more openings for us to fill. If you are looking for a way to help in furtheringour church missions, look no further than our Thrift Shop. Help is really needed! This month we were able to raise$2,075 for our church missions. Please keep our volunteers in your prayers. Some of them are struggling with severe illnesses and treatments. Hope to see all of you down in the shop. Come and browse, you might find something you didn't even knowyou were looking for!Leslie Tuthill

Meaning

It’s a wonderful experience to receive an invitation sent by someone dear to us to be part of something special.Maybe the invitation is to a meal, wedding, performance or a special project in which our friend is involved. Theinvitation is gladly received because we know the person. It shows they care. Besides, the event itself might justbe fun and meaningful.

As fall has now arrived, we can look back over the first two thirds of this year and celebrate the fun and meaningwe’ve all experienced through the life and witness of our church during 2015. We who call MPC home know howspecial this ministry is. It is such a wonder that God has invited us to be part of it all!

People frequently comment on the home they’ve found in our fellowship, the wide variety of music we hear inworship and special events, the care and love shown to one another informally and through Stephen’s Ministry, the children’s ministry in all its age groups and forms, the classes and home groups for adults ofall ages and the teaching in sermons, e-blasts and newsletters.

Of equal impact is all that we do for people in our community and around the world. Each of usis part of these expressions of the love of God wherever we go with whomever we meet. We getto be the presence of Jesus every moment. We also get to share God’s love through taking mealsto families in need, housing the homeless, and investing in mission in so many parts of the world. From down thestreet to Haiti, Spain and India we get to be the hands and voices and feet of Jesus.

Page 9: The Invitation - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/mattituckpresbyterianchurch/documents/Th… · Invitation Who: Any MPC women who like to teach When: Saturday mornings 9-10:30

It’s because of God’s invitation to life in Christ that we are part of this ministry. It’s because of God’s invitationwe get to live into greater joy and deeper meaning every day. There was no greater example of this than the 300thAnniversary Celebration Weekend in June. What a glorious time we had as we recounted blessings past, presentand future.

This whole ministry works because of God’s love at work in each one of us. The Stewardship and GenerosityTeam thank you for the part you have played to create a deeply meaningful life in and through MPC so far thisyear. Later this Fall, you will get an invitation to affirm you are ready to do your part in 2016. We invite you tostart thinking now about the fresh ways you might help as this current year moves to a close and the coming yearbegins. All the ministries of MPC flourish because of you as more and more people are drawn to the love of Godthrough us. Thank you for all you do!Patrick Smith

Tour of MPC Continued

This is a continuation of the 300th Anniversary tour set up by Celie and Henry Lutz. Last month we started in thesanctuary and this month we will complete this area of MPC. Look forward to moving onto the Parlor in November.

Welcome to Mattituck Presbyterian Church self-guided tour: Communion is one of the two Sacraments in the Presbyterian church; the other is the Sacrament of Baptism, which is why the marble baptismal font is prominently placed to the left as you face the chancel. Carved with thesymbol I-H-S (Greek letters for Jesus) - the font is round signifying the circle of eternal salvation. The waters areblessed during the act of baptism and not saved. The baptismal font is visible to all members of the congregationwho are expected to share in the spiritual guidance and nurturing of the one being baptized. Music - played and sung - has always been important in worship and this church has been known for theexcellency of its music. On the left you will see the organ console. On the right are the organ pipes with thechambers behind them. The first pipe organ was installed in the early1890's and eventually replaced in 1928 with aPilcher organ. In 1962, this organ was provided with new pipes and stops as well as a rebuilt console including anewly installed electronic action. In 1991 a new organ was built by Cassavante and dedicated in 1992. The organpipes were refinished by Harvey Bagshaw of Starlite Auto Body. The choir is seated on the left of the pulpit facing the organ console. The area to the right is regularly used by theworship team and special guest instrumentalists. The Cross is an important symbol of our Christian faith and there many around the room if you know where tolook for them. The most striking is the beautiful gold Cross hanging at the front and center of the Sanctuary aboveeverything else. The letters I-H-S are prominent in the center surrounded by the eternal circle. On the Communion

Page 11: The Invitation - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/mattituckpresbyterianchurch/documents/Th… · Invitation Who: Any MPC women who like to teach When: Saturday mornings 9-10:30

table you might see a large wooden Celtic cross with matching candle holders on either side. These were carved, along with the two flower stands, by Sergie Bochan in his North Fork Cabinet Shop. Mr. Bochan had come toMattituck with his family from Hungary in 1951. The members of this church cared for them and helped thembecome U.S. citizens. These items were his thank you gift to God. In the middle of the cross piece of theCommunion table is a carved Maltese cross - it has four equal arms. There are carved crosses on the pulpit chairs -some are budded four arm crosses. The large Bible, another memorial gift, is placed in the center of the Communion table to remind us of thecentrality of God's Word in everything. Other symbolic furnishings include candles - signifying Jesus as the light ofthe world; vases for flowers reminding us of nature and creation. Behind the pulpit area are the American flag andthe flag of Haiti, symbolic with our partnership with Christians in that country.
