The PYP and Inquiry Some of you may ask; Why include attitudes as an essential element of the PYP? While recognizing the importance of knowledge, concepts and skills, these alone do not make an internationally minded person. It is vital that there is also focus on the development of personal attitudes towards people, towards the environment and towards learning, attitudes that contribute to the well-being of the individual and of the group. By deciding that attitudes need to be an essential element of the programme, the PYP is making a commitment to a values-laden curriculum. What attitudes does the PYP suggest that schools should encourage? In PYP schools, students should demonstrate: Appreciation: Appreciating the wonder and beauty of the world and its people. Commitment: Being committed to their own learning, persevering and showing self- discipline and responsibility. Confidence: Feeling confident in their ability as learners, having the courage to take risks, applying what they have learned and making appropriate decisions and choices. Cooperation: Cooperating, collaborating, and leading or following as the situation demands. Creativity: Being creative and imaginative in their thinking and in their approach to problems and dilemmas. Curiosity: Being curious about the nature of learning, about the world, its people and cultures. Empathy: Imagining themselves in another’s situation in order to understand his or her reasoning and emotions, so as to be open- minded and reflective about the perspectives of others. Enthusiasm: Enjoying learning and willingly putting effort into the process. Independence: Thinking and acting independently, making their own judgments based on reasoned argument, and being able to defend their judgments. The purpose of the modelling is not to encourage students to mimic but to provide support to help students reflect on and develop their own set of values. The teacher should look for authentic demonstrations of these attitudes in the daily lives of the students in order to raise an awareness of, and build an appreciation for them. The attitudes should not be part of a hidden curriculum but should be part of the language of the PYP classroom, explicitly part of classroom discussions, and reflected in teachers’ records. We hope by continuing to focus on these attitudes their impact will deeply affect the learning environment and the personal interactions that occur within it.

In PYP schools, students should demonstrate:

Integrity: Being honest and demonstrating a considered sense of fairness.

Respect: Respecting themselves, others and the world around them.

Tolerance: Being sensitive about differences and diversity in the world and being responsive to the needs of others.

As the attributes of the IB learner profile are relevant to both students and adults in a PYP school, so too are the PYP attitudes. They need to be interpreted and modelled for students. The purpose of the modelling is not to encourage students to mimic but to provide support to help students reflect on and develop their own set of values. Idul Adha This coming week we have a holiday. In the spirit of sharing a bit about our English language this is in fact a true holiday and not a vacation. A holiday was originally a holy day. a consecrated day, religious anniversary or Sabbath," from halig "holy" (see holy) + dæg "day" Over time the pronunciation and spelling has changed slightly. This is a good example what happens in English although usually the spelling of a word is very stable. In this case the original spelling really should remain holyday as English compound words do do allow changes to the bases. If you are curious about the history of words you might be interested to investigate the connection between vacuum cleaners and vacations and let me know what you find. So next Thursday is a holiday for Idul Adha and Friday is a vacation for students. Idul Adha is an Islamic festival where traditionally the meat from a sacrificed animal is divided into three parts. The family retains one third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbours; and the remaining third is given to the poor and needy. The story of Abraham’s sacrifice is of course a key story in not only the Quran but in the Christian Old Testament and the Jewish Talmud.

Parent/Student /Teacher Conferences In the last week of school 5-7 October we would like to invite parents and students to meet with teachers to get an update on how your child is progressing so far this year. For ELC classes, conferences are between parents and teachers only; Reception to Grade 1 student attendance is optional. For Grade 2 and up we expect students to be involved in the meetings. The conferences are an opportunity to provide feedback to you on your child’s strengths, the areas they need to improve and to set specific goals for the rest of the semester. It is expected that all parents book a time to meet with your teacher. You can do this by ringing our office and Ibu Melanie will arrange a time that suits; particularly if you have more than one child at school. Please note that on Wednesday, October 7 up until 6:30, all teachers will be available to meet with parents who are unable to come during the day.

JASIS Heads Meeting This Friday, the Heads of school from the JASIS (Java Association of Small International Schools) will be meeting in Jakarta at NIS. This is a very active group who help support our schools in running a variety of social and sporting activities.
