"Children of today are the leaders of tomorrow

and education is a very important weapon to prepare children for their future roles as leaders of the community." This is a quote by Nelson Mandela which holds true to the youth growing up in the Anniston Housing Authority’s Commu-nities. ‘Teamwork Makes the Dream Work’, was the 2019 theme on May 17, 2019, when the Annis-ton Housing Authority’s staff, residents and friends had the opportunity to celebrate some of the most precious accomplishments in the eyes of todays’ youth. The youth’s accomplishments included: Perfect Attendance, A and B Honor Roll, All A Honor Roll and the 2019 High School Graduates. Anthony Thomas, a former resident of Glen Ad-die Homes, was the guest speaker. He told the youth that one of the ways to become success-ful is to set small goals and accomplish them. Mr. Thomas is a realtor and resides in Atlanta, GA with his family.

“Building Stronger and Healthy Families” was the theme for the Anniston Fatherhood Initiative first Fathers, Children, Families and Friends Banquet held on Friday, June 14, 2019 at the Anniston City Meeting Center. The event included fathers and families coming together for food, music, fel-lowship and to hear a dynamic fathers message from Pastor Anthony Cook. Pastor Cook challenged fathers and men to get actively involved in their children’s life, and in the community. Mr. Steven Folks was awarded the AFI Leadership Award. Mr. Antwon Fegans and Mr. Delos Miller were awarded the Fatherhood Awards for their dedication and commitment to their chil-dren and other children in this community.

Connect, Create, Contribute

The Anniston Housing Authority (AHA)Residents had music in their ears, dancing in their feet and love in their hearts when they connected with music from the 70’s in their celebration of Older American Month.

May 15, 2019, AHA celebrated Older Amer-ican Month with residents and guests 55 years and older. Contributions from Ala-bama Cooperative Extension System and the Agency on Aging created opportunities for individuals to receive information and learn about available resources in the com-munity.

The 2019 theme for Older American Month was “Connect, Create, and Contribute.” This theme encourages older adults and their communities to:

Connect with friends, family and ser-vices that support participation

Create by engaging in activities that pro-mote learning, health, and personal en-richment

Contribute time, talent, and life experi-ence to benefit others

According to the Administration for Com-munity Living, communities that encourage the contributions of older adults are strong-er. Older adults play a key role in the vitali-ty of the neighborhoods where they live and in networking with others.

Everyone benefits when everyone can par-ticipate. In 2019, remember to encourage everyone to Connect, Create and Contribute for stronger communities.

My name is Teresa Bur-nett. I am running for the Assistant Resident Leader of Glen Addie Homes. I am a forty-two years old and a resident of Glen Addie Homes. I have 4 kids and 2 grandkids. I have served on the resi-

dent council for several years. I am currently a member of the Voices of the People Community Group. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering and making an impact in my community.

My name is Tonya Glover and I am run-ning for Resi-dent Leader for Glen Ad-die Homes. I take pride in

my home and I

would like to

encourage my neighbors to do the same. I would like

to see more of the residents get involved in the free

training workshops that The Anniston Housing Au-

thority offers. I plan to get out in the neighborhood

and meet my neighbors and find out what it is that

could help make their lives here in Glenn Addie

more comfortable. If elected I will work with as

many people that I can in order for this to be accom-

AHA FAMILY SELF-SUFFICIENCY PROGRAM

The Anniston Housing Authority’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program is: A five (5) year voluntary program for residents

that are unemployed or underemployed. Allows you to save money in an escrow ac-

count managed by Anniston Housing Authority once you become employed and start paying rent.

The intention of this program is for participants to work with their case manager and set goals to help them become self-sufficient whereas you will not have to depend on governmental assis-tant.

The money in the escrow account draws interest and is yours in five years upon completing your program goals and being twelve months free of TANF payments.

Anniston Housing Authority’s Executive Council

Members of the Anniston Housing Authority’s Executive Council attended the 3rd Annual Resident Council Empowerment Confer-ence in Birmingham, AL July 11-12, 2019. The theme was “Uniting to Conqueror”. The two all-day event’s agenda included education of the Resident Council’s roles and responsibilities, inspiring a shared vi-sion and empowering Resident Councils with the resources and support to aid in leading their communities. Attending the conference was: Kenneth Winsley, Sr., Yolanda Roberts, Robin Tucker, Khadija Kelly, LaWanda Pressley and Corliss Goodson. The residents took a tour to one of Birmingham Housing Author-ity’s developments that is being demolished and built in phases. They also attended the ‘Mardi Gras’ Banquet Friday evening.
