Principal’s Message

Welcome to the end of week four, Term Three. The last four weeks have been filled with great

learning opportunities for all students. As a result of our last P&C meeting discussions, our school

captains Ned and Mach will be responsible for the ‘student voice’ section of our newsletter. This is an

opportunity for students at our school to share their opinions and thoughts on different subject

matters. It is also an opportunity for those in our community to have the chance to learn more about

individual students in our school. This week is the first week that students have been able to publish

their student voice, please enjoy.

We have also received in the last fortnight, our Robotics Gear. Students in both classes will engage in

Robotics as a part of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Digital

Technologies curriculum. 3-6 students have been tasked with building these robots, so that all

students in our school can begin programming and completing robotic challenges. I have also built a

robotics challenge table, which all students will be able to use as a part of this learning.

Next week students will be participating in NAIDOC Day celebrations. This morning will involve

students participating in dance, sport, art, story-telling and artefact discovery sessions. I am very

thankful for Aunty Chris and Vicki Paton for their expertise and assistance in making this morning

happen. It will be a great learning opportunity for all students involved. Unfortunately, parents will

not be able to attend due to COVID-19 restrictions. This Term, we also have several events coming up

including, Athletics Carnivals, Under 8s Day, Gala Days and Rewards Days. We look forward to a great

Term of experiences, teaching and learning at our school.

COVID-19 Information

Currently the advice for the Queensland Department of Education is that schools are to continue as

normal for the foreseeable future. Some key advice states:

Schools are safe.

All staff and students who exhibit any symptoms of illness will be sent home immediately.

Adults in schools are still implementing social distancing procedures.

Hygiene is of the highest priority i.e. regular hand sanitising and washing.

As of today (6/8/2020) there are 0 new cases in Queensland.

Border closures will occur from Saturday to limit the spread.

Therefore, as schools are safe and still open, it is expected that students will attend if not ill and/or not directed to self-isolate by health authorities or health professionals. Learning at home materials will not be provided to families who have chosen to self-isolate. If this is the case, the learning at home website is still up and students can access learning there. https://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/learning-at-home

Attendance

If your child is away or unwell for any reason, it is the parent’s responsibility to inform the school each day via phone

call. The school number is 46 950 172. It is understood that we are currently in the middle of flu season. As stated

above, if your child is unwell, keep them home. If they are well please send them to school. Each day’s learning builds

on the day before. It is critical that students attend school as much as possible.

Please send your students to school each day. Please see the information below regarding school attendance. We have

noticed that student attendance rates have been lower on Fridays, so far this Term. Please always send your child to

school if you have the opportunity. Please have a read of the attendance information below.

Why is regular attendance at school important? Regular school attendance will mean that your child gets a better chance at life. Your child will achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day:

they learn better

they make friends

they are happier they have a brighter future Why must I send my child to school? Under Queensland law, you must make sure your child of school age is enrolled and attends school all day, every school day unless they have a reasonable excuse. Illness, doing work experience, competing in a school sporting event or going on a school excursion are reasonable excuses for being absent from school. Principals decide if the excuse given for your child’s absence is reasonable. Avoid keeping your child away from school for:

Birthdays, shopping, visiting family and friends, if they sleep in, looking after other children, minor check-ups or care such as haircuts.

Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays. Again, a reminder certainly in this time, to please keep your child at home only if they are unwell. Our current attendance for 2020 is at 90.2 % (Please see left). Please ensure that your child is at school. Our current attendance for this Term is at 88.7%. (Please see right) (Down from 98% last fortnight)

School Mobile Phone

Please be aware that communication from parents to the school is to be completed by email or the school phone

number (46 950 172).

Please avoid contacting the school via the mobile phone. It is used primarily to communicate information to parents

and the school community and is not to be used for parents to contact the school. It WILL NOT be answered by a staff

member. If you want to contact the school for any reason, please call on the landline or send an email (if not urgent).

The only time where it may be used for two-way communication, is when the school is on an excursion.

Curriculum

P-2

Hi parents and caregivers,

It is crazy how quickly the weeks go by considering we are nearly at the end of week four already!

We have had a ‘jam packed’ few weeks of learning. The students have been continuing with their poetry unit and

learning about, repetition, alliteration and many other text and language features. The students have enjoyed looking at

many of their favourite Nursery Rhymes and Kenn Nesbitt poems.

Throughout Maths the Preps are moving forward in their number unit and have begun looking at the names of numbers

and being able to read and write them. They have enjoyed using ‘hands on’ and matching resources as they learn these

names. The Year 1s and 2s have been learning about number lines, grouping, and arrays in addition and been using

different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. They have also been working on developing their

understanding of fractions.

This week the students have dived into their daily story writing. This has been an enjoyable addition to our daily

learning routine as they enjoy using their creativity in writing and sharing their stories with their classmates.

With the illness travelling around at the moment, I hope for speedy recoveries for all students. I look forward to seeing

everyone’s healthy and smiling faces again.

Kind regards,

Amanda

3-6.

In the last fortnight, students have been continuing to look at Poetry. Within this unit, they will be looking at many

different kinds of poetry including song lyrics, free verse and rhyming poems. In the last fortnight, students have looked

at many language features, such as onomatopoeia, spoonerisms, puns, noun groups, similes, metaphors, idioms and

neologisms. Students have been using these and other poetic features to analyse poetry. Some of the Poems students

have analysed have included, The Man from Ironbark, The Bush Christening (AB Patterson), Granny and the Snake and

My Country by Dorothea McKellar.

In Mathematics, students have been working on their fractions and decimals unit. They are able to identify fractions

(equal parts of a whole) and apply their learning to practical and visual situations. Students have also learned about

fractions as a part of a whole, equivalent, mixed and improper fractions. They are also adding and subtracting (with the

same and different denominators) fractions and are working on problem solving using fractions. In the next fortnight

students will be looking at the relationships between fractions and decimals.

In Technology, students have prepared and have started the process of building their robots. We look forward to getting

these built.

Library Renovations

Over the school holidays our library received a much needed renovation and ‘face lift’. We now have colourful new

shelving and cabinetry as well as a proper librarian’s desk for Mrs Grant to use. The P&C also made a kind and generous

donation towards this project. Thank you to Mrs Willams and her wonderful band of volunteers. I would also like to

thank Mrs Grant, Mrs Casbolt and Mrs Kowitz for their tireless efforts in setting up our new library. It looks fantastic!

Please feel free to come in and have a look for yourself.

Borrowing for students has now opened for this Term. If your child would like to borrow a book, they will need to bring

their library bag to school.

2020 Focus

In 2020, Leyburn State School’s focus for school improvement, is Reading. This focus was formed through the

analysis of 2019 school data and identifying areas where students require improvement. All staff members have

and will be working hard to improve this area of our school over the coming year. With the assistance from the

region, we have adjusted some of our school-wide practices, to better suit individual reading needs.

We are looking forward to seeing continued growth of our students in these areas throughout 2020.

Athletics Carnival

This Term, Leyburn State School will host our regular inter-house athletics carnival on the 19th of August. All

other carnivals have been cancelled including Central and Southern Downs, Darling Downs, State and National

titles. At this stage the only carnival that will go ahead will be the Gala and ball games day hosted at Allora.

Parents however, will not be able to attend this day due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Book Club

As Leyburn State School will no longer accept money, we ask that parents and carers sign up to the ‘Scholastic

LOOP’ to order and pay. The information on how to sign up is on the student order form, if you need any

further assistance, please call Natasha at the office on 46950172.
