Begins when:
•Power driven machinery (in factories) replaced work done in homes
Life Dramatically Changes• Before:• People lived the
same as their parents
• Farming• Died at young
age• Rural areas
• After:• People can
move up in society
• Factories• Live longer• cities
After the Industrial Rev:
•People become less self-sufficient
Farming improved with:
–Crop rotation
–Breeding
–New tools
Agricultural Rev. greatly influenced the Industrial Revolution b/c
•-People were making more “$” so they had more “$” to invest…–People invested to businesses
•“The Workshop of the World”
GB takes the lead in this rev b/c
–They have:•A large labor supply (lots of people)•Capital ( $ to invest)•Natural resources
•Indust. Rev begins w/ the factory system!
•Factory system – a method of production where machines & workers work together under the control of managers.
Efficiency is the key word – •Each person has an
individual task –
•No longer does one person actually complete a project
•More can be produced quicker!

Partnership – bus. w/ 2 or more entrepreneurs

•economy at its lowest point
Unemployment – The Great Depression
No MONEY – The Great Depression!!!
Social changes due to the Industrial Rev.
-People no longer self- sufficient
–New opportunities to move up the “social ladder”
–Larger middle class
Working class affected the most by this rev!
•Worked long hours- 12- 14 hours a day, 7 days a week,
•Very unsafe conditions
•Disease was high
•No child labor laws
Factories became known as:
•Sweatshops
•Slums
Women’s lives changed the most b/c they went to work!
•They left the home •Their lives were no longer centered on the farms
Life was not easy!•Fly lived together with other
people who worked in the factories
•Their lives were “owned” by the mill owner.
•He owned the factory, their homes & the local stores

Problems:•no indoor plumbing--diseases spread--introduced chlorination
•horse manure on streets, open sewers, no system of trash removal
•Lots of pickpockets & thieves & con-men--crime-ridden areas controlled by gangs of youth --police depts too small
To make work conditions better:
•Labor Unions were est.
Labor Unions--Associations that formed to increase wages & better working conditions
–To get what they want they can•Strike•Picket•Boycott
They use collective bargaining to get what
they want
Work together for the same goal
