BACKGROUND
On Indigenous People’s Day 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the former U.S Embassy in Ottawa would be re-purposed as a space for Indigenous Peoples. The Indigenous Peoples Space will encompass the 100 Wellington Street building, 119 Sparks Street (currently a CIBC bank), and a future infill to connect the two existing buildings. This site is on the traditional, unceded territories of the Algonquin Nation.
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN), in collaboration with Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Métis National Council, has partnered with our team to develop a model that will inspire the long-term vision for the Indigenous Peoples Space. The future building will effectively represent First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation peoples’ cultures and histories in such a way that Indigenous governments, institutions and organizations can conduct Nation to Nation business and further our selfdetermination. We welcome you to join us by sharing your thoughts and ideas for building the future.
OUR VISION
As Indigenous architects, we recognize the potential narrative of this historic site, and its challenges. This is a vision of Indigenous values, honouring our Elders and the Algonquin Peoples. We design by listening and working collaboratively toward an expression that celebrates Indigenous presence. This is our first priority.
INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION
CONTEXTE

Our team has Métis, Anishinaabe, Plains Cree, and Inuit representatives, with voices from youths to Elders. Our team is deliberately diverse and carefully structured for a collaborative design process. The process is just as important as the final project; this is how we build a rich understanding of place, embody Indigenous heritage, and welcome visitors from the local community and abroad.

DESIGN DRIVERS
Nation to Nation AxisThe Algonquin Gathering Circle is directly opposite Parliament. The Sacred Fire on axis with the Centennial Flame honours the nation-to-nation connection between Indigenous peoples and Canada.
The LandOur Elders teach that we are close to Mother Earth. An Indigenous garden and celebration space invites visitors into a sacred space of year-round programmed activity.
Wigwam Inner Structure + East EntryThe Birchbark | Wiigiwaas panels of pre-contact Algonquin architecture inspire transparent glass panels to lightly envelope the Beaux-Arts facade of 100 Wellington Street, a European typology on unceded Algonquin land. The east entry honours a sunrise of new beginnings.
Wigwam Outer StructureAs in the Algonquin wiigiwaam’s bentwood supports, a second layer holds the glass shingles against the inner structure and provides insulation for the heritage building.
Honouring the GiftIt is an honour to be gifted a blanket. In marriage ceremonies, this gesture represents the uniting of two unique individuals. We wrap the existing building together with outdoor space, connecting our visitors in an embrace.
The RegaliaWe honour this gift by wrapping it in a regalia of decorations reminiscent perhaps of snowshoes, feathers, jingles, drying frames, gems. Each piece is designed by an Indigenous community so that our diverse peoples are all present. It changes over the years, resilient, beautiful, old gifts returned, new gifts applied, a unified but diversely inflected voice.
Diverse VoicesRepresenting Inuit, Métis Nation, and more than 636 First Nations, we feel at home and welcomed here, a place that resonates with many voices.
