Advantages
▪ Higher impact of publications + Increased number of publications
▪ Encourages greater creativity
▪ Less work: done well, collaboration means less work for everyone without compromising on results
▪ Greater debate and positive criticism!
▪ Brings more experience to bear: the distributed intelligence of a group increases chances of solving problems more efficiently.
▪ Efficient learning: Seeing how a team of experts solves a problem is the best learning that there is.
▪ Wider array of techniques: a collaboration across labs, departments or institutions widens the number of techniques used
▪ Deeper research: in a collaboration you are forced to do more than clip the top of trees with your research.
▪ Funding: Getting funding in Europe and the US it is typically much easier in the context of a collaboration
▪ Impressing investors and funding agencies
▪ Better and more concrete networks built through collaborations
▪ Knowledge of what others are doing
▪ Less risk: there are many more degrees of freedom than with a single lab following a single line of research.
▪ Agility: more likely to exploit an unexpected finding in the setting of a collaboration.
▪ Early adopters: collaboration partners are probably your early adopters for your novel approach, new technology, or new hypothesis.

...and disadvantages
▪ Collaborations can be tricky when there are disagreements between researchers, on the experiments or the results obtained.
▪ Authorship in collaborations is often a sore point. Researchers don’t want to give up the scientific credit in research articles, as thatis integral to their scientific career and their future research funding.
▪ Sometimes collaborations can take much longer than anticipated.
▪ Security can be an issue when collaborating with certain countries, in particular fields of research.
▪ Finding the right collaborators can be difficult, especially in field where publication have large numbers of authors.
