PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dress Like a Farmer Day What a fabulous response from our whole school community ! There were many donations well above the suggested gold coin donation, it’s really nice to know that we really care about our outback neighbours. Of course, all the proceeds from the Sausage Sizzle went to the drought relief funds as well, so thank you very much to our wonderful P&C team. How good were the costumes? I was blown away by the thought and time parents and students put into their costumes.

It was great to see our office ladies dress up as the Country Women’s Association (their lamingtons were really nice too), young Maddy from 1K, and Heba, whose father helped her with her tractor costume (amazing!!) and to top it off Bailey and Corina dressed as ‘mini me’s, looking like we have been on a farm for our whole lives. Outstanding work from everyone! The important thing is, that as a school community, we raised around $3500 to contribute to Drought Relief and help our outback neighbours in their time of need. Lidcombe PS Community has yet again blown me away with your outstanding level of generosity – thank you all so much!

Closing the main school gate

If you are visiting the school during school hours and coming through the main school gate, please make sure the gate is closed behind you when you enter and when you leave to avoid a quick and easy exit for some of our younger students. We have a student in our school who is a flight risk, so this issue is very important !!! Also, we are keeping the pool gate near the Uniform Shop closed as well – please ensure when you walk through it, you close it behind you !

Community Celebration Day You are cordially invited to our annual Community Celebration Day on Wednesday 26 September 2018 in week 10 of this term. This year’s theme is “It’s a wonderful world”. We look forward to seeing many parents at what is one of our most exciting days of the year. Our fantastic committee, led by Mrs. Pisano, Mrs. Tokyurek and Mrs. Wehbe, are planning a great extravaganza for your viewing pleasure and for those who can’t make it on the day, we are having the event professionally filmed and we will produce a DVD as a result, that will be sold for a nominal price. Thank you in advance to our wonderful P and C team who give so much time and effort to make this day so successful. Sausage sizzle and container notes went home this week.

Our Spectacular This exciting event takes place at the Opera House on Monday 10 September. Parents of students taking part should have received a note advising you of your success in purchasing tickets for this event. As a school community, we have booked buses for parents and students travelling to and from the event. Please return the dinner/bus note to the office as soon as possible.

Stage 3 Camp vs High School Orientation Something has just been noticed and that is that the Stage 3 camp has been organised for Monday 3, Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 December – this directly clashes with the High School Orientation Day on Tuesday 4 December. We are very sorry about this, but so many high schools now have orientation days other than this one slated, no matter which dates we have chosen for our camp, we were bound to clash with something. We had 140 places available for camp but with 210 students in Stage 3, some will be able to choose between the camp or high school orientation. All placed for camp have now been filled but we are still putting names on a waiting list.

High absences – Term 3 It was noticed by myself and a lot of teachers, that there were a lot of students away on the last day of term 2, and now, several families taking holidays in the middle of Term 3. Fair enough if your child was sick on the last day or there is someone fatally ill overseas to take the trip, but did you know, that because it was the last day of term was followed by holidays, parents need to produce a medical certificate for that absence ?? Or, did you know that if you are overseas for more than 50 days, I can terminate your enrolment at the school! If your child wasn’t sick, please don’t make this type of thing a habit, or even letting your children have a day off on their birthday – every day at school is important and every day something new is learnt – don’t deny your child these opportunities. The picture below explains the detrimental effect of not sending your child to school regularly. Make a positive decision for your child’s future and send them to school every day.

Many parents of late, have been applying for Exemption from Absence. This means that if you have a very, very, very good reason for going overseas, I can approve the leave so the absences do not count against your child. Most of the time, the reason you provide isn’t good enough (according to the Department of Education) and I cannot approve the exemption. This doesn’t mean you can’t go – parents make that decision – all it means is that the absences accrued by your trip will be marked as unreasonable excuse for being away from school (A) and the absences will count. Lately, parents have been applying for big blocks of leave – most between 30 and 40 days, one or two have been for over 50 days. For your knowledge, an absence from school for over 50 days means that your child will be de-registered at the school. That is a Department of Education rule that we must follow.

When you come back from your trip, sure, you can re-enrol your child, however, if you live outside the school’s drawing area, you will have to apply as an “Out of Area Student”, and with numbers increasing rapidly, the answer could very well be no. Please think very carefully as to why your child is missing school and if you are taking a trip overseas, how long your child will be absent from school and how much learning they will missing. We strongly recommend against taking long trips.

Multicultural Public Speaking – Regional Finals Congratulations to young Nazanin Jamshidi, who was representing our school and district at the Regional Multicultural Public Speaking finals last week. This would obviously be a very tough competition as all the competitors placed either first or second in their district competition – of course, Nazanin won our district competition. Last week though, Nazanin was apparently very cool, calm and collected whilst delivering her speech and amongst this great company, still managed a third placing for the competition. Unfortunately, only the top two progress to the State final, but it is an amazing feat nonetheless. Well done Nazanin!

Lachlan Macquarie G&T Math competition On Thursday 23 August, twenty Stage 3 students from our Maths Olympiad group competed in the Lachlan Macquarie Gifted and Talented Maths Competition. Competition was fierce, with nine teams

competing at our local event at Chullora Public School. Only one team could progress to the next round, which will be at Bonnyrigg Public School (date still to be announced). Well done to Elizabeth Win, Samet Dilsizoglu, Jessica Lin and Alexander Chan, who will represent Lidcombe at the finals!

Enrol now for Kindergarten 2018 Does your preschool child turn 5 years of age before 31 July 2019 ? Have you enrolled your child at Lidcombe Public School for next year ? Now is the time to fill in your application. Please call into the office for an enrolment form as soon as convenient or arrange for one to be sent home with an older brother or sister.

Our 2018 Kindergarten Transition program has changed dramatically and this will be the fourth year of its implementation. We will begin with Kindergarten Orientation Night (Thursday 27 September 2018, starting at 6.00pm in Larcombe Hall), then we will start our transition days in Term 4, running from 9.00am to 11.00am in the mornings on the following days:-

Thursday 18 October 2018

Thursday 25 October 2018

There will be a number of great activities for your child and you as their parent that will not only strengthen your bond, but also familiarise and build confidence in your child about their classrooms, teachers and other students.

If you have already completed an Application for Enrolment form for your Kindergarten child you will automatically receive further details about these

sessions as they become available. If you would like to read some general information about enrolling in a NSW public school please refer to the Department of Education and Training website link:- www.schools.nsw.edu.au/media/downloads/gotoschool/enrolment/detsef.pdf

Kindergarten students will start school on Tuesday 5 February 2019. Of course, parents and Kindergarten students will be called in before that for their Best Start Interview – times to be announced.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge The Challenge includes a range of initiatives with one common purpose - to have more students, more active, more of the time! The Premier's Sporting Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Sport plays an important role in developing regular physical activity, provides positive health outcomes and is a fun and healthy way to connect with your local community. We invite students to take up the Challenge - and take the path to a healthier life. Students can strive for the Bronze Award (210 minutes a week or 30 minutes a day), Silver Award (315 minutes a week or 45 minutes a day), Gold Award (420 minutes a week or 60 minutes a day) and Diamond Award (560 minutes a week or 80 minutes a day). Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 only have to colour in a picture to register that they had been physically active for the day. For our school, we will start to collect how many minutes we have been active for (inside and outside of school) in Week 6 of this term. We hope to replicate the success of last year by attaining a DIAMOND AWARD again. Even the staff will be participating in the staff challenge – we will let you know the details of our end of year event very soon! (More details later). Get out there boys and girls and get active! This is the last week !!!

Great work ! Lucas in 2L was at it again last week. On top of designing and making his own robot in his writing session, this time he designed and made a lego bird with a swivelling head – this time though he had a little help from his mate Yusuf in 2L. Again, what a wonderful process of hard work, determination and creativity Lucas (and Yusuf) – well done !!

Also, I was blown away by Jason and Aris from S3T who made this wonderful crane type machine, to pick up objects and transport them to a different location. Whilst they had a design to work off, they faced challenges but not having all of the right equipment but problem solved to use substitutes to get the task done. Great perseverance boys, well done !

Also, last week, Ana and Vilimaina from S3T showed me their creation using a music tool called ‘Makey Makey’. By attaching electrodes to the pieces of fruit, using the Makey Makey program on the laptop and ensuring a small

electrical current goes through their body, they were able to make a piano tune by pressing on the fruit. Absolutely amazing and great to see two girls, once so shy, now coming out of their shell! Well done girls!

Just after Ana and Vilimaina came down from S3T, more girls from S3T came down! It must have been S3T week!!! Ceylin, Zara and Souad showed their unique take on their history lesson on World War 2, by using an Ozobot to navigate through the countries to state what they had learnt about each country’s involvement in WW2. It was absolutely fascinating! Well done girls! Certainly, engagement in activities has never been higher!

Watch out for our Coders ! We are sending two groups of Stage 3 students to camps where coding and design thinking will be the major skills required. The teams had to be made up of Stage 3 students, with two from year 5 and two from year 6. Also, the team had to be made up of two girls and two boys. The Scratch Code team will participate in an event at Oatley PS on Wednesday 29 August (Miss An will go with them) and the EV3 coding group will participate in their event at Berala PS (Mrs Pant will go with them). Congratulations to the following students for representing our school in this unique opportunity – we know you will do well !

Scratch Coders EV3 Coders Spencer Soejanto Ashley Clavecillas Keith Miller Issey Lee Zara Zanic Atticus Riya Kumar Elizabeth Win

Congratulations ! Congratulations to Taeyang Yong of S2W, who a couple of weekend’s ago, participated in the National Tae Kwon Do championships. In the 10 years division for technique and routine, Taeyang’s team finished first – wow ! Individually, Taeyang also picked up a silver medal for his performance. What an amazing effort !

Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. Over the last couple of weeks we added 1 new person to our list: Recipient for: Week 5: Ethan You (S3B) and Saranya Amalasthan (Term2) We will have our Platinum Party Morning Tea soon. Well done students!

New Buildings – recent developments A Contractor has been appointed for the redevelopment of Lidcombe Public School, with Hutchinson Builders to commence site preparation works. As you have all seen, a security fence has gone up and site sheds have been installed. I implore everyone to keep well away from the area to keep out of harm’s way. Very soon, site ground improvements will begin. The Development Application was approved by Cumberland Council on 16th April 2018. We are continuing to work with the Project Reference Group to complete detailed design, ensuring the best design solution for the permanent home bases, administration building and library. The project team will be hosting talks with the students and staff early next term to brief them on the works and the importance of construction safety. A school information booth will be scheduled to allow parents to be updated on the project and its construction once term 3 commences. The project team will continue to provide ongoing consultation and engagement with you about the redevelopment including through Department of Education’s website for the redevelopment, please visit : https://www.schoolinfrastructure.nsw.gov.au/projects/l/lidcombe-public-school.html. If you have any project enquiries you may send them to [email protected].

Newsletter All newsletters are emailed to our families each fortnight. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage.

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Under the Companion Animals Act

1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

or otherwise controlled).

SCHOOL TIMES

Students MUST NOT arrive at school before 8:30 am and must leave promptly at 3:00 pm Parents are reminded that school supervision exists between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm. A Before and After School Care facility is provided on the school site for parents needing child minding. Contact 9749 2817 after school hours for further details.

Leaving students unsupervised on school grounds has legal implications for both the school and parents.

Access to the school is only possible via the pedestrian gate near the sandpit (Mills Street) during school hours. All visitors must report to the school office. Unauthorised persons on school premises are considered to be trespassing and will be reported to the police.

SMOKING IS PROHIBITED ON SCHOOL PREMISES

RESOURCE GROUP – TUESDAY 4 SEPTEMBER 9.15am

With Kindy Transition coming up in a few weeks, we have a number of resources that we need to get ready to hand out to parents for these sessions. We would love it if we could find some mums who are free on a Tuesday morning from 9am-11am (roughly) to come and help us work on these resources. It’s mainly cutting and laminating so nice and easy, there’s just a lot of it. It’s a good chance to sit and have a cup of coffee and a chat with friends. We do it in Lidbury Hall so toddlers are welcome.

If you are available please see Julie – day and time can be flexible if needed.

We are always able to use donations of long life milk – we go through 6-8ltrs every week, bread – 8-10 loaves each week, vanilla yoghurt – 3 ltrs a week and tinned spaghetti – 8 tins a session.
